To find free EV charging near you, start with a map that has a free-price filter, then verify the specific station’s connector, price, access rules, hours, and live status before you drive. In the United States and North America, PlugShare and ChargePoint offer useful map filters; a charging network’s own locator can confirm details for its sites. Elsewhere, use a charging map with coverage and filters for your region.
1. Filter a broad charging map for free locations
A broad map is a practical first step when you do not know which network serves an area. PlugShare’s support guide describes finding free locations under the map’s Amenities filters. The guide is dated May 10, 2022, so check the current app or website interface if the labels have changed. PlugShare’s support guide also recommends adding your vehicle so the map can filter for plugs that work with it. If an expected station disappears, revisit the filters: a connector or vehicle setting may be hiding it.
PlugShare is a map, not a navigation platform. Its support guide says it can hand directions off to Google Maps or Waze. Verify the route and destination in the navigation app before setting off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Use ChargePoint’s Free filter and inspect station details
ChargePoint’s Driver App guidance, updated June 30, 2026, lists Free among its quick filters. It also documents filters for Available, Fast, My EV, and Open Now. Use the filters to narrow the map, then open a station’s detail page rather than treating the map pin as a guarantee.

- Flex Level 1 EV Charger - The EVDANCE Level 1 electric car charger is compatible with J1772 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles (North American Standard). *Tesla requires a SAE J1772 adapter.
- Convenient to Use - This charger has both NEMA 6-20 plug for 16A 240V charging (3.68kW, 10-12 mi/h) and a NEMA 6-20 to 5-15 plug adapter for 12A 120V charging (1.44kW, 2-5 mi/h). The included bag makes it easier to carry on the go. It also has a 25ft cable length, you can use it flexibly from anywhere in the garage or driveway.
- Check Your Outlet Type -This charger works with standard 120V NEMA 5-15/5-20 outlets (2-5 mph charging speed) and 240V NEMA 6-20 outlets (10-12 mph) . It's not compatible with NEMA 6-15/10-30/14-30/14-50/6-50 outlets – you'll need a NEMA 14-50/14-30/10-30/6-50 to 6-20 adapter (sold separately) to connect.

For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
- Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.
ChargePoint says station pages show connector type, port status, pricing, owner, hours, parking, and accessibility. Those details help answer separate questions: whether the connector fits your vehicle, whether a port is currently available, and whether you can use the site during your visit. ChargePoint’s driver guidance covers the app’s station-finding features.
3. Check the charging network’s own locator or app
Once a map identifies a promising site, check the operator’s locator or app for network-specific details. Electrify America’s locator lets you search by location and filter by connector; its app describes real-time availability and connector types. This is particularly useful when you want to confirm that a listed station belongs to the network you expect and review its current site information. Electrify America’s station locator provides its location search.

Operator locators are not a substitute for a broad map: they focus on that operator’s sites. Coverage varies by region, so the most useful combination is often a broad map to discover a location and the operator’s own tool to confirm details.
4. Verify the individual port before routing there
A map’s “free” label is a lead, not a promise. Pricing can change, and a free offer may have access conditions. A site may also be closed, restricted, or occupied when you arrive. Before driving, open the individual station listing and check:

- Price: Confirm the current price for the port or charging session. Electrify America says DC fast-charging prices vary by location and directs drivers to the app or charger screen for real-time pricing.
- Connector: Match the connector shown for the station to your vehicle’s charging inlet and any applicable vehicle compatibility information. A free port that cannot charge your vehicle is not useful.
- Status: Check whether the port is available now, not just whether the location appears on the map.
- Access and hours: Look for parking restrictions, site hours, and other access rules that could prevent you from charging.
ChargePoint station pages provide status and pricing; Electrify America points users to its app or the charger screen for real-time pricing. If the app listing and the charger display disagree, treat the on-site price and conditions as the ones to verify before starting a session.
Why a free map result may not be the right charger
Public charging locations are not interchangeable. A location may offer a different connector, charging speed, access arrangement, or network than the one you need. In the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center and National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Q1 2024 Station Locator dataset, Tesla Superchargers accounted for 60.4% of public DC fast ports; Electrify America accounted for 10.0%, EVgo 7.7%, and ChargePoint 7.2%. These are historical shares of that dataset’s DC fast ports, not current 2026 market shares or a breakdown of free chargers. The figures illustrate why a map pin alone does not tell you what kind of charging is available. The AFDC/NREL report provides the dataset context.

Choose tools based on what you need to confirm
| Tool | Useful for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Broad map such as PlugShare | Finding locations and filtering for free charging; vehicle-based plug filtering; handing directions to a navigation app | Current interface, station listing, connector, access, price, and status |
| ChargePoint app | Free and availability filters, vehicle-related filtering, and station details such as connector, price, hours, and parking | That the specific port suits your vehicle and remains available at the listed price |
| Operator locator or app | Confirming connector options and network-specific site information | That the location belongs to the operator, plus current price, availability, hours, and access |
These locator tools are U.S. and North America oriented in the sources cited here. Outside those areas, use a map with local coverage and comparable price, connector, and availability filters; do not assume a U.S.-focused app will show every nearby station.
