The most reliable way to make earbuds comfortable and secure is to treat each ear as a separate fit, start with the tips supplied by the manufacturer, and adjust size and angle in small steps. Begin with the recommended medium tips when the instructions specify them, insert the left and right earbuds in their marked ears, and gently twist or rotate them until they sit securely. If one ear feels different, use a different tip size on that side when the model allows it. A fit or seal test can confirm the result on supported models, but no test or tip size works universally.
Comfort and retention are related but not identical. A tip that seals well can improve bass, loudness and noise blocking, while excessive pressure can make an earbud painful. The goal is a stable seal without forcing the earbud deeply into the ear. The process below helps you identify whether the problem is tip size, placement, earbud design or an incompatible accessory.
What a good earbud fit feels and sounds like
A properly fitted earbud should remain in place during ordinary head movement without you constantly pushing it back in. It should feel supported rather than wedged. You should not need to force it deeper to hear bass or block background sound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA seal also affects audio. JBL’s In-Ear Fit & Comfort Guide explains that a poor seal can make sound seem thin, reduce bass and loudness, and allow more unwanted sound through. Those symptoms do not prove that the tip size is wrong—the earbud may simply be sitting at the wrong angle—but they are useful clues when combined with how the ear feels.

Fit is personal and can differ between your left and right ears. Apple and soundcore both document using different tip sizes for each ear on supported products. There is no universal “small,” “medium” or “large” standard across manufacturers, so compare sizes only within the set supplied for your exact model.
Fit earbuds in a controlled sequence
Make changes one at a time. Testing both ears simultaneously can hide the fact that one side needs a different size or angle.
- Check the markings. Match the earbud marked L with your left ear and R with your right ear. The acoustic opening and stabilizing features are shaped for that side. Apple’s ear-tip instructions and soundcore’s Liberty Buds 2 guidance both begin with correct left/right placement.
- Inspect the supplied parts. Identify every included tip size and any wing, hook or stability band. Make sure a silicone tip is fully seated on the nozzle and is not folded over. Do not mix a replacement part from another model unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility.
- Start with the manufacturer’s recommended size. Apple recommends starting with medium tips for supported AirPods Pro models. Hold the earbud by its body, place the tip at the ear-canal opening and insert gently; do not push until it hurts.
- Adjust the angle or rotation. Many in-ear designs seal only when the body is rotated slightly. JBL advises trying other sizes and rotating the tip to find a seal. Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) wearing guide also uses a placement and adjustment sequence specific to that model.
- Test each ear separately. Speak, walk and turn your head with one earbud fitted, then repeat on the other side. If one side feels loose while the other feels pressurized, do not compromise both ears with the same size. Use mixed sizes when the model’s instructions permit it.
- Run the available fit check. Use the manufacturer’s app or device test if your model provides one. A test is a confirmation tool, not a replacement for comfort: a passing seal that causes pain is not a usable fit.
- Try the next supplied size before buying accessories. Change only one variable—tip size, then angle, then any stabilizer—so you can tell which change solved the problem.
Choose the right tip size for each ear
Tip-size labels are relative to the manufacturer’s set. The physical opening of your ear canal can also change slightly with jaw movement, so test while speaking and walking rather than judging the fit while sitting still.

When a tip may be too large
For the supported Bose earbuds covered in its guidance, pressure, soreness or a “squished” feeling can indicate a tip that is too large. Try the next smaller supplied tip and refit the earbud at the recommended angle. Treat this as a model-specific cue, not a rule that applies to every earbud.

When a tip may be too small
Looseness, loss of the seal when you turn your head, or an earbud that falls out can indicate that the tip is too small on the Bose models described above. A larger supplied tip may fill the opening more securely. If the larger tip creates pressure, the earbud’s shape or retention design may be the limiting factor rather than the tip size.
When the two ears need different sizes
Use the smallest comfortable tip that seals each ear. Apple and soundcore explicitly allow different sizes on the left and right for supported products. Record the combination that works—for example, medium left and small right—so you can replace tips consistently after cleaning.
Use fit and seal tests when your model supports them
Fit tests are model- and software-specific. They are not a universal standard, and the names and requirements can change with product generations.
Apple AirPods Pro
Apple documents the Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) in its support instructions. The same page describes an Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 with the required software. Follow the on-screen path for your exact generation; do not assume that a test available on one generation appears on another. The test can identify a poor acoustic seal, but you should still remove or resize a tip if it feels painful.

soundcore models
soundcore provides fit-test instructions for supported products, including its Liberty Buds 2 guidance. The available test and app steps depend on the product, so select the exact model in the manufacturer’s support material before relying on the result. A test is useful for checking seal consistency, not for proving that the earbud will stay secure during every activity.
Models without a test
If your earbuds have no fit test, use practical checks: play familiar music at a low level, compare bass and vocal clarity between sizes, speak and chew briefly, and walk or turn your head. Stop if you feel pain or pressure. These checks cannot measure a seal as precisely as a supported manufacturer test, but they can reveal obvious movement or leakage.
Understand retention designs before changing earbuds
Tip size is only one part of retention. Compare the physical design when you are choosing a new model or deciding whether an accessory could help.

| Plain in-ear silicone tip | Creates friction and an acoustic seal at the ear opening. | Included size range, nozzle shape and the manufacturer’s insertion angle. | Apple and JBL document size and placement adjustments; neither establishes a universally best tip. |
| Ear wing or fin | Rests in the outer-ear fold to resist rotation and movement. | Whether the earbud includes the correct wing size and whether replacement wings fit that exact model. | Bose and soundcore describe stability parts on particular models; compatibility is model-specific. |
| Ear hook | Loops around the outer ear and carries some of the earbud’s weight. | Hook shape, glasses or mask interference, and left/right orientation. | The supplied material does not establish a universal comfort or security advantage. |
| Stability band | Adds an outer-ear contact point around a compatible earbud body. | Exact model, band orientation and whether the band changes charging-case fit. | Bose’s support page notes that a different stability band may be needed for each ear on supported earbuds. |
Some listeners prefer the unobtrusive feel of a plain tip; others need an ear wing, hook or band for movement. Treat those as design choices, not upgrades that will fit every ear. A stabilizer that is too large can create pressure even when the silicone tip is correct.

Fix the most common fit problems
“My earbuds keep falling out”
- Refit the correct left or right earbud and rotate it according to the product instructions.
- Try the next larger supplied tip in the affected ear, then walk and turn your head to check retention.
- Check that the tip is fully attached and not slick with oil or moisture; clean and dry the parts according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.
- If the fit is still loose, see whether your model accepts an ear wing, hook or stability band. Confirm the exact model before ordering a replacement.
An Avantree support article uses the phrase “earbuds keep falling out” and discusses different tip sizes and an Earfin for its own Aura Loop model. That accessory example is product-specific and should not be treated as evidence that the Earfin fits other earbuds.
One ear hurts or feels blocked
- Remove the earbud and try the next smaller supplied tip on that side.
- Reinsert at a shallower angle and let the tip seal without forcing it inward.
- Try a different stabilizing part if the pressure comes from the outer ear rather than the canal.
- Stop using the earbud if pain persists. The manufacturer guidance cited here explains fit, not medical treatment or a universal safe insertion depth.
The sound is thin or bass is missing
- Check that the tip is attached evenly and has not folded.
- Try a larger tip or a different supplied size if the seal is clearly leaking.
- Rotate the earbud gently until the opening points along the ear canal as described by the model’s instructions.
- Run the model’s fit or seal test if available. A poor seal can reduce bass, perceived loudness and outside-noise blocking, as JBL explains.
The earbud feels secure but still shifts during exercise
Movement can exceed what a plain tip is designed to resist. Try the model’s supplied wing, hook or stability band, if any, and follow its orientation instructions. soundcore’s Sport X20 wearing guide illustrates why retention parts must be fitted in the model’s specified position. If your earbuds have no compatible stabilizer, a different earbud design may be a more reliable solution than stacking third-party parts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buy replacement tips or stabilizers without creating a new fit problem
Use the supplied tips first. If they are lost, worn or insufficient, search for a replacement using the exact earbud model and attachment style—for example, replacement silicone ear tips for earbuds assorted sizes. Treat that phrase as a category search, not a guarantee of universal compatibility.
Before ordering, verify:
- the earbud model and generation, including any regional naming difference;
- the nozzle diameter and attachment method, such as a snap-on collar or a model-specific locking mount;
- that the replacement tip does not cover microphones, vents or charging contacts;
- that the assembled earbud still fits in its charging case; and
- the return policy, because a tip can look identical while sealing differently.
Do not buy an ear wing, ear hook or stability band solely because it fits the accessory listing. Bose’s support material includes the warning that you may need a different eartip or stability band for each ear on supported QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen). That is a useful reminder to match the part to the ear as well as to the earbud.

Clean and handle earbuds so the fit stays consistent
Oil, sweat and earwax can make silicone slippery and can obstruct the acoustic opening. Remove the tip as the manufacturer directs, clean the tip and earbud surfaces with the approved method, and let them dry before reassembly. Never push debris into the nozzle or use a sharp object against the mesh. A tip that has stretched, torn or no longer sits evenly should be replaced with a compatible part.
Check the fit after long storage, after changing tip brands and after installing a wing or band. A component that is not seated completely can change both the seal and the way the earbud rests in the outer ear.
Compare earbuds by fit features, not just by tip labels
When comfort and security are the deciding factors, compare the features that affect fit directly:
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Retention design | Is it a plain tip, or does it include wings, hooks or stability bands? | Outer-ear support can reduce rotation when a plain seal is not enough, but it adds contact points that may create pressure. |
| Included tip range | How many sizes are supplied, and are replacement sizes sold for the exact model? | More supplied choices make it easier to test each ear without immediately buying accessories. |
| Fit-test availability | Does the manufacturer document a fit or seal test for this model and its required software? | A supported test can identify an acoustic leak, but it does not replace a comfort check. |
| Replacement compatibility | Can you identify the nozzle and stabilizer attachment, and will the assembled earbud fit the case? | Third-party parts are not automatically interchangeable. |
The supplied manufacturer material documents these features for particular products; it does not establish a single best earbud shape, tip size or retention system for everyone. If possible, choose a retailer with a clear return policy and test the fit on both ears before committing to long listening sessions.
A simple decision path
- Loose in one or both ears: try the next supplied size and correct the rotation.
- Pressure or soreness: try the next smaller size and reduce insertion depth; if discomfort remains, stop.
- Good comfort but weak bass: reseat the tip, rotate the earbud and check the seal.
- Good seal but movement during activity: use a compatible wing, hook or stability band, or choose a model designed with one.
- Different results between ears: use different sizes or stabilizers where the manufacturer permits it.
- No improvement after every supplied option: the earbud’s shape may not suit your ears; changing to a different retention design is more sensible than forcing an unsafe fit.
Safety boundaries
Earbuds should sit securely without painful pressure. Do not force them deep into the ear, continue wearing them through pain, or assume that a perfect app score makes an uncomfortable fit safe. The manufacturer guidance used here provides practical wearing instructions, not medical advice or a universal fit standard. For persistent pain, discharge, hearing changes or a suspected ear injury, stop using the earbuds and seek appropriate medical care.
For ordinary comfort problems, the winning combination is usually specific rather than universal: the correct left/right earbud, a suitable tip size for each ear, the model’s recommended angle, and—only when needed—a compatible retention accessory.
