If you want a PC game you can keep playing without a launcher or account check, buy from a store that supplies DRM-free files and a standalone offline installer. GOG is the broadest option covered here: its policy requires games to run offline without the Galaxy client, and Galaxy is optional for single-player offline play. itch.io is another useful source, especially for indie games, but each creator controls the files and can remove a project. Download your installers promptly, test them offline, and keep at least two local copies.
“Keep forever” means retaining a usable copy of the software and its offline features. It does not preserve multiplayer servers, cloud saves, live events, account services, or compatibility with every future operating system.
What DRM-free actually means
Digital rights management (DRM) is a technical control that can require activation, periodic authentication, a specific launcher, or another copy-protection check before software runs. A DRM-free game is delivered without those technical restrictions. You receive files that can be installed and launched directly, subject to the game’s own operating-system and hardware requirements.
DRM-free is not the same as “every feature works offline.” A game may contain a fully offline story mode and still depend on external services for matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud saves, achievements, user-generated content, cosmetics, timed events, or account-bound purchases. Those services can disappear even when your local installer remains usable.

Before purchasing, separate the features you are buying into two groups:
- Local features: the executable, game data, campaign, maps, and saves stored on your computer.
- Network features: authentication, servers, matchmaking, cloud synchronization, live content, community downloads, and online economies.
Your archive can preserve the first group. It cannot recreate a provider’s servers or guarantee that a future operating system will run an old build.
Which stores are the best starting points?
| Store | DRM policy | How you receive the game | Launcher and offline play | Control over continued availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | DRM-free is mandatory for games listed on the service. | Standalone offline installers are provided, alongside an optional Galaxy client. | GOG developer documentation requires games to be playable offline without Galaxy. Single-player offline mode should work without Galaxy, another game client, or an internet connection. | GOG’s 17 March 2022 commitment says purchased and downloaded games cannot be taken from you or altered against your will. |
| itch.io | itch.io says it makes no DRM modifications to creator uploads. | Users download files exactly as the creator uploaded them. | No platform-wide launcher is needed for the downloaded files; each title’s own requirements still apply. | Creators can remove their content at any time, so availability through your account is not a substitute for a local archive. |
These policies describe the store delivery model, not every individual game’s design. Read the product page for each title, especially when a listing advertises online multiplayer, a seasonal event, user-made content, or an account-based progression system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy GOG is the strongest broad option
GOG describes itself as a digital distribution platform with a curated selection of games and an optional gaming client. Its defining distinction for preservation is that DRM-free delivery is a requirement rather than an occasional feature.
Offline and launcher requirements
GOG’s developer documentation states that all games on the service have to be playable offline and without the Galaxy client. It also says DRM-free is mandatory and that single-player aspects should function without GOG Galaxy, another game client, or an internet connection. That gives you a clear purchasing test: a title may offer optional online extras, but its advertised single-player component must not require the client or an online check.

GOG’s preservation commitment
In a 17 March 2022 DRM-free commitment, GOG listed three promises: the single-player mode has to be accessible offline; games you bought and downloaded can never be taken from you or altered against your will; and the Galaxy client will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.
The same statement explains why local copies matter: GOG says making sure you can play purchased games offline, make backup copies, and install them as many times as needed is increasingly relevant. Treat that as an instruction to download the files, not merely as a reason to trust an online library.
What Galaxy is still useful for
Galaxy can simplify installation, updates, social features, cloud synchronization, and library management. None of those conveniences changes the offline promise for supported single-player content. If your goal is long-term independence, use Galaxy when convenient but also obtain the standalone installer and verify that it works without the client.
Why itch.io is useful—and why it needs faster archiving
itch.io is a discovery and distribution platform where creators upload projects directly. Its official Creator FAQ says users can download games exactly as creators uploaded them and that the platform makes no modifications to uploaded files for DRM. This makes it valuable for independent games, experimental releases, demos, and small projects that may not appear in larger storefronts.
The creator controls the listing
The same FAQ says creators fully own their content and are free to remove it at any time. A title can therefore disappear from public download even though you previously bought or downloaded it. Your practical response is to archive the files immediately after purchase and keep the page’s installation notes with them.

Verify each itch.io title individually
“No DRM” describes the platform’s file handling; it does not certify the software inside every upload. Check whether the creator supplies Windows, Linux, or macOS builds; whether the game needs a separate runtime; whether multiplayer uses a central server; and whether updates are delivered as complete replacements or incremental patches. If the creator mentions an account, launcher, always-online mode, or external service, record that dependency before you assume the title is preservable.
A purchase-to-archive workflow
Follow this process for every game you want to retain independently of a store account.
- Inspect the product page before buying. Look for the operating-system build, single-player and multiplayer descriptions, online-only warnings, timed events, cloud requirements, user-generated content, and any mention of a separate client.
- Buy from a source with a clear file-delivery policy. On GOG, confirm that the title is covered by its DRM-free catalog rules. On itch.io, read the creator’s notes because requirements and support vary by project.
- Download the standalone installer as soon as the purchase completes. Also download any officially supplied patches, manuals, soundtracks, bonus files, serial information, or alternate builds that you may need later.
- Install once while online. This lets the installer obtain prerequisites, unpack archives, or complete any first-run setup while help and updates are still available.
- Test a clean offline launch. Close Galaxy or any other launcher, disconnect the computer from the internet, and start the game from its installed executable or shortcut. Open the intended single-player mode and create a test save.
- Document dependencies. Write down the game version, installation order, required redistributables, controller settings, save-game location, and which functions failed without a network connection.
- Create two separate backups. Copy the installer, patches, extras, documentation, and notes to an external hard drive or portable SSD and to a second storage location. Do not count two folders on the same physical disk as two independent copies.
- Verify the copies. Open representative archives, compare file sizes, and use a checksum or inventory file so you can detect silent corruption later.
- Recheck periodically. Connect each backup only long enough to verify that it is readable, and replace a drive showing errors before it becomes your only copy.
What to store with every game
A bare installer is better than nothing, but a complete preservation folder reduces the work required years later. Use a consistent folder such as Game name/Version/ and keep these items together:
- The original offline installer or uploaded archive.
- Every patch or hotfix you downloaded, in installation order.
- Manuals, readme files, license information, serial numbers, and configuration guides.
- A plain-text inventory listing file names, versions, download dates, and checksums.
- Operating-system and architecture information, such as 32-bit or 64-bit requirements.
- Notes from your offline test, including the executable used and any feature that still needed a server.
- Save-game backups if the title stores them outside its installation directory.
- Controller, graphics, and compatibility settings that were necessary for a successful launch.
Keep a copy of your inventory outside the game folder as well. If an archive becomes unreadable, the inventory tells you what must be replaced rather than leaving you to guess.
How to judge “forever” for multiplayer and online features
Use a feature-by-feature test instead of a single yes-or-no label. A game can be an excellent permanent single-player purchase while its multiplayer component has a finite life.

Usually preservable locally
- Story campaigns that launch from local files.
- Offline skirmish, practice, or sandbox modes implemented in the installed build.
- Maps, music, videos, and other assets included in the installer.
- Local saves that do not depend on cloud synchronization.
Not preserved by a DRM-free installer
- Dedicated servers operated by the publisher or community hosts.
- Matchmaking, ranked ladders, leaderboards, and server-side statistics.
- Cloud saves and settings synchronized through an account.
- Live-service events, rotating shops, seasonal rewards, and online economies.
- Downloads of user-generated content that are not included in your archive.
- Third-party authentication or an account required for a particular mode.
When a product page does not clearly separate these functions, assume only the files you can download and launch locally are under your control. Save a note naming the services the game contacted during testing so a future owner of the archive understands the boundary.
Delisting, removal, and policy changes
If a GOG listing disappears
GOG’s 17 March 2022 commitment says games you bought and downloaded can never be taken from you or altered against your will. That promise protects the purchased and downloaded copy described by the policy. It does not mean a new installer, a future patch, or a discontinued online service will always be available. Download your copy while the title is in your library and maintain your own backups.
If an itch.io creator removes a project
Because creators can remove their content, an itch.io account library may no longer provide a download after removal. A prompt local archive is the practical safeguard. Keep the original archive and any documentation that explains how to install it; do not rely on a bookmark or a browser cache.
If an update breaks preservation
Keep older installers and patches instead of overwriting them. If a new build adds an online requirement or introduces a compatibility problem, you can return to the version you tested. Record which patch produced which version so you do not apply updates blindly.
Storage and backup choices
An external hard drive or portable SSD is the most direct hardware purchase for this workflow. Use it for installers, patches, manuals, saves, and your checksum or inventory file. The available evidence does not establish a particular brand, capacity, speed, or service life, so choose a device that fits the size of your library and keep a second copy on separate storage.

- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
Drive organization
- Use one top-level folder per store, then one folder per game.
- Keep installers separate from installed game directories so a reinstall does not overwrite your archive.
- Use descriptive version names, for example
GameName_1.2.3_offline-installer. - Keep the inventory file at the root of the backup and update it whenever you add a patch.
Redundancy and verification
Two copies protect against a single drive failure, accidental deletion, or a corrupted download. Store the devices separately when practical and connect them periodically to verify that files still open. A checksum gives you an objective comparison between the working copy and the backup; an inventory also helps you notice that a patch or manual is missing.
Offline testing and troubleshooting
The game will not start with the launcher closed
Confirm that you installed the standalone build rather than only a launcher shortcut. Read the game’s manual or readme for a direct executable, install any supplied prerequisites, and repeat the test with the computer disconnected from the network. If the title is advertised as offline-capable but still requests authentication, preserve the exact error message and contact the store or creator while support is available.
The campaign works but multiplayer does not
This is consistent with DRM-free delivery. Check whether matchmaking or a dedicated server is required, then record multiplayer as an external dependency in your archive notes. Do not label the entire game unusable when its local modes still launch.
An itch.io download has several files and no installer
Read the creator’s instructions, keep the complete directory structure, and launch the documented executable from a test copy. Do not rename or delete apparently unused files until you have tested the game; creators upload files without platform modifications, so a seemingly optional component may be required by that particular build.
A backup will not open later
Compare it with the checksum or inventory from the working copy. If the values differ, replace the damaged copy from the second backup and create a new redundant copy. Never treat a single unreadable drive as evidence that the original purchase has been lost if another verified copy exists.
A practical decision checklist
Use these questions before you click Buy:
- Is there a downloadable installer or archive I can store locally?
- Does the store or creator explicitly describe DRM-free delivery?
- Can the single-player mode launch without the store client and an internet connection?
- Which advertised features depend on servers, accounts, cloud saves, or live events?
- Can I download patches, manuals, and extras now?
- Does the creator or publisher retain the right to remove the listing?
- Do I have two separate storage destinations ready?
- Have I written down the version and completed an offline launch test?
If the answers are clear, you are buying a local software copy with known limits rather than merely renting access to a library entry.
Bottom line
Start with DRM-free stores that provide standalone files. GOG offers the clearest broad policy: its documentation requires offline, Galaxy-free play for supported games, and its 17 March 2022 commitment addresses backup copies and continued access to purchased downloads. itch.io supplies creator-uploaded files without platform DRM changes and is excellent for indie discovery, but creators can remove projects, so archive immediately. In both cases, download the files, test the intended offline mode, record online dependencies, and keep two verified copies on separate storage. That is the practical meaning of keeping a PC game forever.
