The dependable way to find a device using DNS outside Pi-hole is to test that device directly: record every DNS server it has (including IPv6), send a known lookup to each resolver, and check whether the same lookup appears in Pi-hole’s Query Log. Then identify router forwarding, VPN or browser secure-DNS settings, and application-specific resolvers that can make a legitimate Pi-hole request look like a bypass—or hide a real one.
What “bypassing Pi-hole” actually means
A device bypasses Pi-hole for a lookup when that lookup is resolved by a DNS path other than Pi-hole. The path could be a resolver manually configured on the device, a DNS address supplied over IPv6, a VPN tunnel, a router proxy, or an encrypted resolver connection made by a browser or application.
Do not treat a missing entry in the Pi-hole Query Log as conclusive proof on its own. The device might have answered from cache, made no DNS request at the time you looked, used encrypted DNS, or sent the request through a router that changes the apparent client. Conversely, an entry in the Query Log is direct evidence that that particular ordinary DNS query reached Pi-hole. It does not prove that every query from the device uses Pi-hole.
The evidence you need
| Check | What it establishes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Active client DNS settings | The resolver addresses the operating system has been told to use on the selected interface | Settings can differ between wired, wireless, VPN, guest, IPv4 and IPv6 paths; an application can still use its own resolver |
| A direct query to every listed resolver | Whether a specific test lookup succeeds through each configured address | It tests ordinary DNS only and must be repeated for A and, when relevant, AAAA records |
| Pi-hole Query Log | Whether the same ordinary lookup reached Pi-hole and which source address Pi-hole observed | Router proxying can make every client appear as the router; no entry has several possible explanations |
| Router DHCP or connected-device list | Maps an IP address or MAC address to a device name | Names and leases may be stale, incomplete or different from the label shown by Pi-hole |
| Router DNS enforcement | Can block clients from reaching outside DNS servers on the covered protocol and port | Menus are vendor-specific, hard-coded resolvers may stop working, and encrypted DNS requires separate controls |
Step 1: Run one controlled test from one device
Start with a single device, not a network-wide graph. Choose a domain that Pi-hole currently blocks, or another unique test name that is appropriate for your setup. Perform the lookup once, note the exact time, device IP and interface in use, and immediately search Pi-hole’s Query Log for that client and domain.

A blocked response is useful only if the request reached the Pi-hole instance whose lists and groups you are evaluating. A successful response is not automatically evidence of a bypass: the domain may be allowed, cached, assigned to a different group, or answered by an upstream resolver after Pi-hole forwards it. The test question is narrower: did this particular lookup traverse Pi-hole?
Keep the test reproducible
- Temporarily disconnect unused VPNs or secondary network interfaces unless the VPN is the path you are testing.
- Use the same device and interface for the resolver command and the Pi-hole log check.
- Record whether the command asks for an A (IPv4) or AAAA (IPv6) record.
- Repeat after clearing or bypassing application cache only when you understand the effect; a cached answer can legitimately produce no new DNS query.
Step 2: Inspect the device’s active DNS configuration
Pi-hole’s setup guidance recommends inspecting the client itself and querying every DNS server shown there. The active interface matters: a laptop can have different DNS values on Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a VPN, a virtual adapter or a guest network.
Linux
First identify the interface carrying the test traffic, then run:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutenmcli device show <interface> | grep .DNS
Replace <interface> with the actual interface name, such as eth0 or wlan0. Record every IPv4 and IPv6 address returned. NetworkManager profiles, VPN plugins and temporary connection settings can each change this list, so inspect the profile that is active during the test.
Windows
Run:
ipconfig /all
Under the active LAN adapter, note every value in DNS Servers. Ignore disconnected adapters unless they are carrying the lookup. A VPN adapter can advertise its own resolver and take precedence over the physical adapter.

Other clients
Use the operating system’s current network-status page or equivalent command to obtain the resolver addresses, but do not rely on a router’s advertised DNS value alone. The device’s effective list is the one that determines where its ordinary resolver requests go.
Step 3: Query every resolver and compare Pi-hole’s log
For each address you recorded, send the same test domain directly to that resolver. This removes ambiguity about which server answered.
Recommended Free Tools
Linux and macOS
dig @<resolver-address> <domain> A
For an IPv6-oriented test, request an AAAA record:
dig @<resolver-address> <domain> AAAA
Use brackets around an IPv6 literal when your dig build requires them. Run the command once for every listed resolver, not just the first address.
Windows
nslookup -server=<resolver-address> -q=A <domain>
Repeat with -q=AAAA when checking IPv6. The response identifies the server that handled the query and lets you compare it with the Pi-hole Query Log.
How to read the result
- The lookup appears in Pi-hole: that ordinary lookup reached Pi-hole. Pi-hole may then forward it upstream or answer according to its lists, groups and cache.
- The non-Pi-hole server answers and no matching Pi-hole query appears: that test used another ordinary DNS path. Investigate the device settings, router behavior, VPN and secure-DNS features.
- The query fails: failure alone does not prove enforcement. Check that the resolver address is reachable, the domain is valid, the interface is connected and local firewall rules are not blocking the test.
- The result is inconsistent: repeat the test for each address and protocol. Resolver rotation, cache state and multiple interfaces can produce different outcomes.
Step 4: Check IPv6 separately
Checking only IPv4 is one of the most common ways to miss an alternate DNS path. Router Advertisements or DHCPv6 can provide an IPv6 resolver independently of the IPv4 DNS configuration. A client may therefore send IPv4 lookups to Pi-hole while sending IPv6 lookups elsewhere.

Record the IPv6 DNS addresses shown by the client and query each one directly. Also verify that Pi-hole has an IPv6 address reachable from the client and that the router is actually advertising it. In the Fritz!Box example documented by Pi-hole, the IPv6 Pi-hole address is distributed through DHCPv6 and Router Advertisement; that arrangement is an example, not a universal menu path or requirement.
If the client has no IPv6 DNS address but still reaches IPv6 destinations, that does not by itself indicate a bypass. It may be using IPv4 DNS for those destinations, cached data, an application resolver or another local mechanism. Correlate the protocol used by the test with the address family requested.
Step 5: Resolve which physical device made the request
Once you have a source IP in Pi-hole, compare it with the router’s DHCP lease and connected-device tables. Check the MAC address, hostname, lease time and interface rather than trusting a friendly label alone. A recycled DHCP address can otherwise make an old device appear responsible for a new query.
When Pi-hole is not the DHCP server
Pi-hole may display an IP address without a useful hostname when another device supplies DHCP. Its revServers setting—formerly called conditional forwarding—can send local reverse-DNS lookups to the DHCP server so Pi-hole can associate addresses with local names. Configure that mapping only for the correct local domain and DHCP server; a wrong reverse-DNS target can create misleading names or delays.
When the router proxies DNS
Some routers accept clients’ DNS requests and forward them to Pi-hole. In the documented Fritz!Box arrangement, Pi-hole can then see the router as the client for all forwarded queries. That is an attribution limitation, not proof that clients are bypassing Pi-hole: the requests may still be passing through it.

When this happens, use the router’s live client or DHCP list and correlate timestamps with the test device. Per-device Pi-hole groups and statistics may not work as expected until the router is configured to preserve client identity or clients are directed to Pi-hole themselves.
Step 6: Investigate encrypted and application-level DNS
Ordinary resolver commands do not cover every way software can resolve names. DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) carries DNS lookup information inside HTTPS. A browser, operating system, VPN or application that opens its own encrypted resolver connection may therefore produce no ordinary query in Pi-hole’s log.
Settings to inspect
- Browser secure-DNS or “use secure DNS” settings, including policies that choose a provider automatically.
- Operating-system private DNS, encrypted DNS or per-network resolver settings.
- VPN clients that tunnel DNS or force a provider while connected.
- Applications with a built-in resolver, proxy or ad-blocking component.
- Enterprise profiles or mobile-management policies that enforce encrypted DNS.
Test with the application that matters. A command-line dig result through Pi-hole does not prove that a browser using DoH follows the same path.
Pi-hole special-domain controls
Pi-hole FTL documents policy handling for several special names: Firefox’s use-application-dns.net canary, Apple iCloud Private Relay names mask.icloud.com and mask-h2.icloud.com, and resolver.arpa for Discovery of Designated Resolvers. These controls can influence whether software enables a private resolver, but they are policy mechanisms rather than a substitute for checking the client and router. Names, defaults and menu labels vary by Pi-hole release, so verify them against the installed version before changing them.
Step 7: Check the router’s DNS path
The router can alter both destination and attribution. Review its LAN DHCP settings, IPv6 Router Advertisement and DHCPv6 settings, DNS proxy behavior, guest-network policy and VPN integration. Confirm that the address distributed to clients is Pi-hole’s IPv4 address and, where intended, its IPv6 address.

Pi-hole’s post-install guidance recommends configuring the router’s DHCP clients to use Pi-hole. If the router cannot advertise a custom DNS server, the documented alternatives are to use Pi-hole’s built-in DHCP server after disabling the router’s DHCP service, or to configure devices manually as a last resort. Disabling two DHCP servers on the same LAN is essential; otherwise clients can receive unpredictable settings.
Step 8: Consider enforcement only after diagnosis
Detection and enforcement are different tasks. After confirming an alternate path, a router can restrict direct DNS traffic from clients to outside resolvers. The exact controls depend on the router model and firmware. The Fritz!Box guide, for example, demonstrates a filter that allows the Pi-hole host to make DNS requests while blocking direct client requests.
That example tests a direct lookup such as:
dig google.com @8.8.8.8 +short
Run it from the Pi-hole host and from another client, then verify that the router permits the Pi-hole host’s request but blocks the client’s direct request. Treat this as a Fritz!Box-specific example, not a universal sequence of menus. A rule covering traditional DNS on port 53 will not automatically stop DoH over HTTPS or every VPN tunnel.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Enforcement can also break legitimate software. Pi-hole’s official Fritz!Box documentation cautions: “Some devices or applications use hard-coded DNS servers and may not work as expected if they can’t reach the desired DNS server.” Test guest networks, streaming devices, captive portals, firmware updates and VPN clients after applying a rule, and keep a way to disable the rule during recovery.
Common symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A test domain is absent from Pi-hole, but the device reports a normal answer | Another resolver, cached data, DoH, a VPN or a router-mediated path | Query every listed IPv4 and IPv6 resolver directly; inspect secure-DNS and VPN settings; check the router’s DNS proxy |
| Pi-hole shows the router rather than the device | The router is forwarding or proxying client DNS | Correlate the timestamp with the router’s DHCP/client table and review reverse forwarding |
| IPv4 tests pass but IPv6 tests do not | IPv6 DNS is missing, unreachable or advertised independently | Inspect Router Advertisement and DHCPv6 values and query each IPv6 resolver |
| Only one browser ignores Pi-hole | Browser-level secure DNS or an extension-specific resolver | Disable or centrally manage that browser’s secure-DNS setting, then repeat the controlled test |
| Blocking direct DNS breaks one device | The device or application uses a hard-coded resolver | Allow the required path deliberately, configure the device for Pi-hole if supported, or leave the enforcement rule off for that device |
| A query sometimes appears and sometimes does not | Cache, resolver rotation, multiple interfaces or intermittent VPN use | Repeat with a unique uncached test where practical and log interface, address family and time for every attempt |
A repeatable audit checklist
- Choose one device and one controlled test domain; note the time and interface.
- Find every active DNS server on that interface, including IPv6 addresses.
- Run
digornslookupdirectly against each listed resolver for A and, when relevant, AAAA records. - Search Pi-hole’s Query Log for the exact client, domain and time.
- Compare the observed source IP with the router’s DHCP lease and connected-device list.
- Determine whether the router is proxying DNS and whether Pi-hole can see individual clients.
- Inspect browser, operating-system, VPN and application secure-DNS settings.
- Review router DHCP, IPv6, guest-network and DNS-proxy configuration.
- Only after the path is understood, test a router restriction and verify both allowed Pi-hole requests and blocked direct requests.
- Recheck affected devices for hard-coded resolver failures and document any intentional exceptions.
Version and vendor caveats
Pi-hole’s documentation pages are maintained guidance rather than fixed-edition manuals. FTL settings, special-domain defaults and interface labels can change between releases. Router menus and filtering behavior vary by vendor and firmware, and client operating systems expose different secure-DNS controls. Use the diagnostic logic in this guide broadly, but confirm the exact setting name and behavior on the versions installed in your network.
The Bottom Line
To identify devices using a DNS server other than Pi-hole, inspect each device’s complete IPv4 and IPv6 DNS list, query every resolver directly, and match the test with Pi-hole’s Query Log. Treat missing log entries as evidence to investigate—not automatic proof of a bypass—then account for router proxying, VPNs, encrypted DNS and application-specific resolvers before enforcing a block.
