For heels you’ll wear for hours, start with a lower, stable heel, a toe box that follows your foot’s shape, and comfort that feels immediate when you walk. Try them on later in the day, check for pressure and slipping, and choose a pair suited to the amount of walking or standing ahead. No heel height or design guarantees all-day comfort for everyone.
Start with heel height and stability
A lower heel generally puts less pressure on the ball of the foot than a higher one. Guidance differs on the precise height to aim for: the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) describes an ideal heel as below 2 inches, while Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust advises keeping heels under 4 cm (about 1.5 inches). These are recommendations from different organizations, not a universal medical safety cutoff.
Height is not the only consideration. The NHS trust notes that a wider heel is more stable. If you are considering a higher heel, AAOS says a platform under the toe box can decrease overall foot stress; that does not guarantee that a particular platform shoe will feel comfortable or suit your feet.

Choose a toe box that gives your toes room
Look for a toe box wide or square enough to follow the shape of your toes without squeezing them together. A pointed toe can compress the toes and add pressure at the front of the foot. A shoe that forces your foot forward into a cramped point is a poor choice for extended wear, even if its heel is low.
Judge the shoe on your foot, not just its listed size. Check that your toes have room when you stand and walk, and that the shape does not cause pinching or pressure.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShop and try shoes when your feet are larger
Feet can swell over the course of the day. AAOS notes that they may swell by up to 8% and recommends buying shoes toward the end of the day, when feet are likely to be larger. A pair that feels fine in the morning may feel tighter after hours on your feet.

- Stand and walk in both shoes. Check for toe pressure, pinching, rubbing, and whether either heel slips.
- Pay attention to how they feel now. Shoes should feel comfortable immediately; do not rely on breaking in a pair that hurts or rubs at the outset.

Use cushioning as a secondary check
A well-padded sole can be one useful feature when comparing shoes. Inserts or forefoot pads may be relevant for some wearers, but cushioning cannot make a fundamentally poor fit suitable for hours of wear. First make sure the shoe gives your toes room, stays secure at the heel, and feels comfortable as you walk; consider an insert only as an additional option, not a fix for pinching or slipping.

Match the shoes to the day ahead
Consider how long you expect to walk or stand, not just how the shoes look or feel while seated. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust advises wearing sensible shoes for more than three-quarters of everyday walking or standing and saving fashion shoes for special occasions. If the occasion requires heels, choose the most stable, roomy pair that feels comfortable immediately, and limit how long you wear higher heels when you can.

FootCareMD advises limiting time in high heels because longer wear increases pressure on the bones of the foot and the risk of pain or stress fracture. The practical takeaway is to avoid making a high heel your default for prolonged walking or standing.

Quick comparison checklist
- Heel: Is it lower and stable, with a wider base where possible?
- Toe box: Is it wide or square enough for your toes, rather than forcing them into a point?
- Fit: Have you tried the shoes later in the day with your intended hosiery?
- Walking test: Do you feel pinching, rubbing, pressure, or heel slip?
- Cushioning: Is the sole adequately padded, without relying on an insert to overcome a bad fit?
- Occasion: Is the shoe appropriate for the amount of walking and standing you expect?
When to pass on a pair
Choose another shoe if it pinches, rubs, crowds your toes, or slips at the heel during a short try-on. Immediate discomfort is a warning about the fit, not a promise that the shoe will become suitable after breaking in. Likewise, a high heel that feels tolerable for a brief fitting may still be a poor match for a day involving extended standing or walking.
