The fastest way to find a nearby business that may accept Bitcoin is to search BTC Map for your city or neighborhood, then confirm the listing with the business. A map pin is a lead, not proof that the venue still accepts Bitcoin, is at the mapped address, or supports the type of payment your wallet will send.

For a reliable trip, check the venue’s own website or published phone number, ask whether it accepts Bitcoin in person today, and clarify whether payment is through Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or both. Keep a wallet ready to scan a QR code or open a payment link, and use a gift card only when direct payment is unavailable and the gift card is offered in your region.

Start with a local Bitcoin map

BTC Map is the most practical first search because it is built around physical places tagged as accepting Bitcoin. BTC Map says it uses OpenStreetMap to tag places that accept bitcoin and displays those merchants in its apps; the apps and underlying data are free and open source.

Search your actual destination

  1. Open BTC Map in a browser or its app.
  2. Use the search box to enter your city, postal code, neighborhood, or the address you will be near.
  3. Zoom in until individual pins and street names are visible.
  4. Open several nearby pins rather than choosing the first result. Record the business name, address, category, website, phone number, and any payment-method note shown in the listing.
  5. Check the route and opening hours on the business’s own channels before leaving.

Search the area around the place you are actually visiting, not just the center of the city. A result that looks close at a wide zoom level may be in another suburb, inside a private building, or on the wrong side of a large shopping complex. Open the listing and compare its street address with the business’s official address before planning your route.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Map coverage is uneven. A quiet map can mean few businesses have been tagged in that area, not that no local merchant accepts Bitcoin. Conversely, a dense cluster can reflect older or approximate entries rather than many currently active Bitcoin businesses.

Understand what the pin proves

A pin generally indicates that someone added an OpenStreetMap tag or directory entry. It does not independently confirm that the business still accepts Bitcoin, that every employee knows how to process it, or that the pin is placed at the exact storefront. BTC Accepted explicitly warns that information may not be up to date and that many map pins are approximate.

Read the listing as a set of clues. A named branch, phone number, website, and recent verification note give you more to check than a category label alone. A pin without an address or contact path is a weak lead, even when it appears only a few minutes away.

Confirm the business before making a trip

Verification is the step that prevents most wasted journeys. Use the contact details published by the business, not an unverified number copied from a third-party listing.

Use the business’s own website first

Look for a current “Payments,” “FAQ,” “Contact,” or checkout page. Wording such as “Bitcoin,” “BTC,” or “Lightning” may describe online checkout only, so confirm that the physical location accepts it at the counter. If the website has no payment information, call or message the venue using its listed contact method.

Check whether the page refers to a particular branch, franchise, or delivery area. A company may accept Bitcoin online while its local cashier does not, or one branch may have a terminal that another branch lacks. Screenshots and old social posts are useful leads but should not replace a current answer from the venue.

Ask a precise question

Say: “Do you currently accept Bitcoin for in-person purchases at this location?” Then ask two follow-ups:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “Do you accept Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or both?”
  • “Can the cashier provide a QR code or payment link at the time of sale?”

Ask whether there is a minimum purchase, a separate process for refunds, or a limitation to particular products only if that matters to your purchase. Policies can differ between branches, so identify the exact address and date of your visit.

If the employee is unsure, ask for a manager or the person who operates the payment terminal. Do not treat a general “we take crypto” answer as confirmation that Bitcoin is supported at the counter; it may refer to another asset, a third-party gift-card service, or an online payment page.

Get a same-day confidence check

If you are traveling a long distance, call on the day of the visit. A business can change payment processors, stop accepting Bitcoin, or temporarily disable a terminal without updating every directory. Save the name of the person who confirmed the policy and the time of the call, but treat that conversation as practical confirmation rather than a guarantee that a terminal will work when you arrive.

Confirm opening hours and the branch address in the same call. If you are arriving near closing time, ask whether Bitcoin payments are available until the posted closing time or only while a particular employee is present. Carry a conventional backup payment method in case the answer changes or the terminal is offline.

Compare more than one directory

Use a second directory when BTC Map has no useful results or when you want an independent lead. Each service has its own geographic coverage, update process, and mix of physical and online merchants; none should be treated as a complete census.

Directory What it is useful for Coverage or count shown at the cited snapshot Important qualification
BTC Map Local map search for places tagged in OpenStreetMap Physical-place map and open-source apps Listings are leads; verify with the business.
Coinmap A second map view of venue data based on OpenStreetMap tags Not stated Its results can differ from BTC Map because scope and updates differ.
BitPay directory Searching spending categories that include online and in-person merchants Not stated Check that a result is a physical venue near you and confirm its current policy.
BTC Accepted Cross-checking listings and reported acceptance details Not stated The service warns that information may be out of date and map pins may be approximate.
Bitcoin Map An additional directory of businesses 152 businesses in 36 countries and 134 cities at the 2026 displayed snapshot Those figures describe that directory’s dataset, not all Bitcoin-accepting businesses worldwide.

BTC Map’s dashboard showed 27,259 merchants and 15,105 merchants recently verified within one year in a 2026 snapshot. The “Recently Verified (1y)” group is defined using OpenStreetMap survey:date, check_date, or check_date:currency:XBT tags younger than one year. The figure is a directory-dataset count, not an independently audited total of every merchant that accepts Bitcoin. Do not compare it directly with Bitcoin Map’s 152-business display: the services measure different datasets and scopes. See the BTC Map dashboard for the definitions and current values.

Counts are useful for understanding a directory’s scale, not for predicting how many usable venues are around your home. A city may have many entries but few recently checked locations; another may have a small number of well-maintained listings. Use the count and verification information to decide how much calling you need to do, never as a promise that a nearby shop will accept payment.

Check the payment rail before you arrive

“Accepts Bitcoin” can mean different technical payment methods. Confirm which one the venue supports and make sure your wallet can use it.

Lightning payments

Lightning is commonly used for in-person Bitcoin payments because a cashier can present a QR invoice for quick settlement. Your wallet must support Lightning payments and have spendable Lightning funds. A wallet that holds only on-chain funds may not be able to pay a Lightning invoice without an additional swap or transfer step.

Ask whether the business expects a Lightning invoice generated at checkout or accepts a reusable address. A fresh invoice normally contains the amount and destination for that sale. Follow the cashier’s process, but inspect the invoice in your wallet before approving it.

On-chain Bitcoin payments

An on-chain payment uses a standard Bitcoin transaction. It can require fee selection and confirmation time, and a merchant may have its own policy about waiting for confirmations. Ask whether the cashier accepts an unconfirmed transaction, requires a particular confirmation count, or uses a processor that handles the timing. Do not assume that an address or QR code shown for one payment rail works for the other.

On-chain fees are paid by the sender and can vary with network conditions and transaction size. The venue may quote a Bitcoin amount through its processor and may let that processor handle exchange-rate and confirmation details. Confirm the total, any displayed fee, and the merchant’s release policy before sending.

Either method, or a temporary outage

Some businesses support both rails; others support only one. A venue may also suspend Bitcoin payments if its terminal, processor, or internet connection is unavailable. Confirm the method on the day and carry a conventional backup payment method so a technical outage does not leave you unable to complete the purchase.

Prepare your wallet for an in-person payment

Bitcoin.org describes the basic flow: look for a Bitcoin or Lightning option, scan a QR code or open a payment link with your wallet, and the store gets paid.

  1. Install or open a wallet that supports the rail the merchant confirmed.
  2. Before leaving, check that the wallet has enough spendable balance for the purchase, network fees where applicable, and a small margin for an incorrect estimate.
  3. Keep the phone charged and ensure the wallet can display or scan QR codes. If you use a separate signing device, test the connection before the trip.
  4. At checkout, ask the cashier to generate a fresh invoice or payment request for the exact amount. Do not pay an old screenshot or a QR code copied from a website unless the business specifically instructs you to do so.
  5. Scan the code or open the payment link, inspect the amount and destination shown by your wallet, and approve only after they match the sale.
  6. Show the wallet’s payment status to the cashier and keep the receipt or transaction identifier until the purchase is complete.

A hardware wallet is not established as a requirement for ordinary in-person spending. Use whichever wallet is compatible with the confirmed payment method and that you can operate safely at the point of sale.

Do a small preparation check before you leave: open the wallet without relying on a weak signal, confirm that you can switch between currency displays, and make sure the device clock and camera work. Do not move funds between wallets at the counter unless you understand the transfer and its timing. A rushed transfer can add fees or leave the payment unavailable when the cashier is waiting.

Evaluate a listing with a confidence checklist

When several venues appear nearby, rank them by evidence rather than distance alone.

  • Freshness: Is there a recent verification date or a recent confirmation from the business?
  • Address accuracy: Does the pin match the street address on the venue’s own website?
  • Physical presence: Is it a storefront you can visit, rather than an online-only merchant or a service area with no public counter?
  • Payment rail: Does the listing state Lightning, on-chain, or both, and has the business confirmed that detail?
  • Contactability: Can you reach a current phone number, email address, or official social account?
  • Operational details: Are opening hours, branch information, and product restrictions clear?

A nearby listing with a confirmed address and current payment method is usually a better choice than a closer pin with no contact information.

For a high-value purchase, use two independent checks: confirm the address and policy with the business, then compare the payment instructions with a second official channel such as the company’s website and its verified social account. This reduces the chance that a stale directory entry or an impersonated contact sends you to the wrong place.

What to do when no nearby result is reliable

Expand the search area carefully

Pan the map to adjacent neighborhoods or nearby towns and repeat the verification process. A business outside your immediate area may be practical if you can confirm its hours and payment rail before traveling.

When expanding the radius, compare travel time with the value of the purchase and the cost of an unsuccessful trip. Save the exact address and route for the branch that confirms acceptance; do not assume that another location in the same chain has the same payment setup.

Ask local Bitcoin communities for a lead, then verify it

Community recommendations can reveal newly accepting businesses that directories have not yet indexed. Treat any recommendation as an unverified lead and contact the venue directly; a personal report does not establish that the policy is still active.

Consider a gift card only as an indirect option

Bitcoin.org notes that supported gift cards can be an alternative for some purchases. Availability depends on region and the specific service. Buying a gift card does not mean the local merchant accepts Bitcoin directly, so check the gift card’s geographic restrictions, expiry terms, redemption method, and balance before paying.

A gift card can also introduce separate fees, limits, or identity checks set by the issuer. Review those terms and verify that the recipient or local store can redeem the card before treating it as a substitute for direct Bitcoin acceptance.

Common failure modes and fixes

The map shows a business that says it no longer accepts Bitcoin

Do not argue with the listing or make the purchase based on an old pin. Ask the business whether another branch or payment method is active, then report the stale information through the directory’s available feedback channel so future searches are less misleading.

The pin is near the business but not at the entrance

Use the official street address and a normal map route to identify the correct entrance. Approximate pins are especially risky in shopping centers, markets, and multi-tenant buildings. Call if the storefront is not obvious.

The cashier accepts Bitcoin but cannot identify Lightning or on-chain

Ask to see the payment screen or invoice before opening your wallet. If the cashier cannot state which rail is supported, do not send funds until the method and destination are clear. A failed or misdirected transaction may not be reversible.

Your wallet cannot pay the invoice

Stop and read the wallet’s error message. It may indicate that the invoice is for a different rail, has expired, exceeds your available balance, or requires a feature your wallet lacks. Ask the cashier to generate a new invoice and, if necessary, use a compatible wallet or another payment method rather than improvising a transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The price changes while the payment is being prepared

Request a fresh invoice for the final amount. Compare the amount displayed by the wallet with the cashier’s total before approving; do not edit a payment request manually.

  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

The payment appears pending

Keep the payment screen and transaction details available. Ask the cashier what their policy is for pending payments and whether their processor recognizes the transaction. For on-chain payments, confirmation requirements can affect whether the merchant releases the goods. If the venue cannot verify payment, use the agreed backup method and retain records so you do not pay twice.

The business accepts Bitcoin online but not at the counter

Ask whether an online order can be placed for pickup and whether the online payment is actually settled in Bitcoin. Do not assume that a website checkout creates an in-person option; the practical result may still require a card, cash, or a gift card at pickup.

Privacy and safety at the point of sale

  • Use the business’s official contact details and avoid sending funds to a personal address supplied through an unsolicited message.
  • Verify the amount and destination on your wallet’s confirmation screen, not only on the cashier’s display.
  • Never share a seed phrase, private key, wallet backup, or device passcode with staff or anyone claiming to “help” complete the payment.
  • Keep enough ordinary money or another payment option for transport and emergencies.
  • Save the receipt and transaction identifier until refunds, returns, or disputes are resolved.

Bitcoin payments may not be reversible in the way a card charge can be. Before approving, check the business name, amount, and rail yourself. For returns, ask the store how it handles refunds: it may require the original receipt, use a separate Bitcoin payment, or offer store credit under its own policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable five-minute search routine

For routine errands, use this sequence:

  1. Search BTC Map around the destination.
  2. Open two or three plausible physical venues and copy their official contact details.
  3. Check a second source such as Coinmap, BitPay’s directory, or Bitcoin Map when coverage is sparse.
  4. Call the exact branch and confirm current in-person acceptance plus Lightning, on-chain, or both.
  5. Open a compatible wallet, verify funds and battery, and carry a backup payment method.

Write down the confirmed branch, the person or channel that answered, the payment rail, and the time of confirmation. That small record helps if you are visiting later in the day or comparing several locations.

This process separates discovery from confirmation: directories help you find candidates, while the business confirms what you can actually use when you arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a BTC Map listing proof that a business accepts Bitcoin today?

No. BTC Map is a useful lead based on OpenStreetMap tags, but listings can be stale or approximate. Confirm the exact branch and payment method with the business before traveling.

How do I ask whether a shop accepts Lightning or on-chain Bitcoin?

Ask, “Do you currently accept Bitcoin for in-person purchases at this location?” Then ask whether it accepts Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or both, and whether the cashier can generate a QR code or payment link at checkout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I pay a Lightning invoice from a regular Bitcoin wallet?

Not necessarily. Your wallet must support Lightning and have spendable Lightning funds. A wallet holding only on-chain funds may need a separate swap or transfer before it can pay a Lightning invoice.

Are BTC Map’s merchant totals a complete count of Bitcoin businesses?

No. The dashboard totals describe BTC Map’s own directory dataset. Its 2026 snapshot showed 27,259 merchants and 15,105 recently verified within one year; those figures are not an audited census and should not be compared directly with other directories.

What if no nearby business can confirm direct Bitcoin acceptance?

Expand the map search to nearby neighborhoods or towns, ask local communities for leads, and verify each lead directly. A supported gift card may be an indirect alternative where available in your region, but it is not direct merchant acceptance.

Do I need a hardware wallet to pay at a local business?

No requirement for a hardware wallet is established for ordinary in-person spending. Use a wallet compatible with the confirmed payment rail and one you can operate safely at the point of sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use BTC Map to find candidates, cross-check sparse results with another directory, and call the exact branch before you go. Confirm whether the venue accepts Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin, or both; prepare a compatible wallet; and carry a backup payment method because directory entries and payment terminals can change.
