A layoff does not end an archaeology or cultural-resource-management (CRM) career, but the next search works best as a system rather than a single job-board query. Set alerts in the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Career Center, search USAJOBS with both job titles and the federal series GS-0193, monitor your state historic-preservation and transportation agencies, and check CRM, environmental, engineering, and architecture firms directly. Then tailor each application to the vacancy’s duties, confirm that you are eligible to apply, and track every deadline and follow-up.
The guidance below is U.S.-focused. Openings, hiring paths, work locations, and project schedules change quickly, so verify the live announcement with the hiring organization before applying.
Start with a focused plan, not a single search
Immediately after a layoff, preserve your records and define the work you can accept. Save your résumé, project lists, performance reviews, training certificates, publications, sample reports, and contact details for references while you still have access to them. Do not copy confidential client data, protected site information, or an employer’s proprietary documents.
Choose your target range
Write down your preferred geography, willingness to travel, minimum employment duration, field-versus-office balance, and whether seasonal, temporary, part-time, or permanent work is acceptable. A broad target can include field technician, project archaeologist, principal investigator, compliance specialist, GIS analyst, collections professional, historic-preservation specialist, or agency cultural-resources staff. These are search directions, not evidence that every role is open or that you meet every requirement.

Build a simple application tracker
A spreadsheet is enough. Record the employer, position title, announcement URL or reference, location, work arrangement, employment type, closing date, eligibility or hiring path, required documents, contact person, date applied, and follow-up date. Add a column for questions about travel, field conditions, reporting, and project funding. The tracker prevents a closing date or document requirement from being lost among repeated searches.
Use several channels at the same time
No single listing service captures all archaeology and CRM work. Use professional, federal, state, local, and employer-controlled channels together.
| Channel | What to search or monitor | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| SAA Career Center | Archaeology and CRM job listings | Create recurring checks, review new postings, and use the center’s résumé or posting functions when they fit your needs. |
| USAJOBS | archaeology, archeology, cultural resources, historic preservation, archaeological resources, and 0193 | Read the complete announcement, especially “This job is open to,” qualifications, documents, location, and closing rules. |
| State and local government | Your state historic-preservation office (SHPO), state archaeology office, transportation and natural-resources departments, and the state job board | Check both the central government board and each agency’s own careers page. |
| Private employers | CRM, environmental, engineering, and architecture firms that perform cultural-resource work | Use a board as a lead, then confirm the vacancy on the employer’s own site before preparing materials. |
| Professional networks | Regional archaeological societies, university networks, former field teams, and association announcements | Ask about upcoming projects, references, and short-term work that may not be advertised broadly. |
Check the SAA Career Center regularly
The Society for American Archaeology’s career center is a direct professional channel for archaeology and CRM positions. Set a recurring calendar reminder rather than relying on one visit. Save searches that combine a discipline term with a location, and read the full posting for travel, field-season, education, and experience requirements. If you post a résumé, remove personal information you do not want publicly indexed and keep the document consistent with the version you submit to employers.

Search USAJOBS with multiple spellings and duties
Federal announcements may use “archaeologist” or “archeologist,” and some relevant work appears under cultural-resources or historic-preservation language rather than an archaeology title. DOI identifies Archaeology as occupational series GS-0193. Searching that series helps you find the occupational family, but it does not show that you satisfy a particular announcement’s education or experience standard. Agencies can also use different titles or series for related work.

Look beyond the national boards
The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers’ 2025 workforce reporting describes state job boards and SHPO or agency websites as recruitment channels. Offices have different budgets and posting habits, so a vacancy may appear only on an agency page or state system. Review your state’s SHPO, any separately organized state archaeology office, departments of transportation and natural resources, and county or municipal preservation programs.
Build searches from titles, duties, and project language
Run several narrow searches instead of one long string. Combine a role, a duty, and a place or agency name. For example, pair “archaeological survey” with a state, “Section 106” with transportation, or “GIS cultural resources” with an agency.
| Search family | Terms to try | What it may surface |
|---|---|---|
| Core titles | archaeologist, archeologist, archaeology technician, field technician, project archaeologist | Survey, testing, excavation, monitoring, and project delivery roles |
| CRM and compliance | cultural resource management, cultural resources, archaeological resources, compliance, Section 106 | Permitting support, review, consultation, and mitigation work |
| Preservation and agency work | historic preservation, preservation specialist, cultural-resources program | SHPO, federal, state, or local program positions |
| Technical skills | GIS, records research, collections, report writing, database, survey | Office, documentation, mapping, collections, and reporting roles |
| Federal identifier | GS-0193, 0193 | USAJOBS announcements in or near the DOI archaeology occupational family |
Search both the work you performed and the outcome you delivered. “Survey,” “site documentation,” “artifact analysis,” “GIS,” “technical report,” “consultation,” “training,” and “resource protection” can find postings that omit the word archaeologist.
Screen federal openings before you invest time
Federal applications can fail at the eligibility stage even when your background appears strong. USAJOBS places the controlling information in the announcement, not in a general series description.

- Read the location and work-site rules. Note the duty station, remote or telework limits, travel, reporting date, and any geographic restriction.
- Check the qualification section. Separate required education, specialized experience, selective factors, licenses, and documents from preferred skills.
- Record the closing rule. Some announcements close on a stated date; others close when a maximum number of applications is reached. Submit before the earlier effective limit.
- Follow the requested format. Upload every document the announcement requests and use the application fields exactly as instructed. Keep a copy of the final submission.
Understand CTAP and ICTAP correctly
Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) and Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) are federal transition programs, not general layoff benefits. USAJOBS describes CTAP for qualifying surplus or displaced employees seeking priority in their agency and ICTAP for qualifying federal employees applying to another agency under specific conditions. Formal notice or status, the vacancy, locality, and qualification rules all matter. A layoff from a private CRM firm does not by itself create CTAP or ICTAP eligibility.
If you previously worked for the federal government, review your formal separation or surplus notice, contact your former agency’s human-resources office, and read the announcement’s transition instructions. Do not select a priority hiring path unless your documentation supports it.
Expect announcement-specific constraints
A cultural-resources vacancy reviewed for this topic illustrated why each announcement must be read independently: it specified a location, temporary duration, work-site limitations, a cap on applications, and particular eligibility paths. It is not a standing recommendation or proof of a current opening. Treat every posting’s dates and conditions as changeable.
Translate your experience into the employer’s language
Keep a master résumé or CV with your complete history, then create a tailored version for each role. The goal is accurate alignment, not keyword stuffing. DOI’s GS-0193 description connects archaeology work with resource management, historic preservation, compliance, research, consultation, training, and protection of archaeological resources. Use only the parts that describe your actual record.

| Vacancy requirement | Evidence you can show | Useful detail to add |
|---|---|---|
| Field survey or excavation | Projects, methods, terrain, crew role, and duration | Dates, area covered, supervision, documentation standards, and safety responsibilities |
| Compliance or Section 106 support | Records research, effects analysis, consultation, monitoring, or mitigation | Agency or regulatory context, deliverables, and your specific contribution |
| Technical reporting | Technical reports, site forms, databases, or publications | Document type, audience, review role, and volume or schedule when known |
| GIS or data work | Mapping, geodatabases, spatial analysis, or data quality control | Software and tasks you actually used, plus the decision the work supported |
| Collections or preservation | Cataloging, rehousing, curation, conservation coordination, or records management | Collection type, standards followed, and access or reporting responsibilities |
| Leadership and consultation | Crew supervision, training, stakeholder meetings, or project coordination | Team size, partners, schedule, and decisions you handled |
Use an evidence matrix
Copy each required duty into a private worksheet. Beside it, write one concrete example from your work history, the employer or project, the dates, and the resulting deliverable. Then place the strongest examples in the résumé and cover letter only where the announcement allows one. This makes gaps visible before submission and prevents vague claims such as “experienced in CRM” without proof.
Handle a layoff briefly and accurately
List the employer and dates normally. If asked about the departure, state that the position ended in a layoff and move to your qualifications, availability, and the work you want next. Do not criticize the former employer or imply that confidential project information can be shared. Have references ready from supervisors, field directors, clients, professors, or project partners who can discuss your work.

Two positions called “archaeologist” can have very different schedules, travel demands, and advancement paths. Use the live announcement or written offer for pay, benefits, and schedule; the available evidence does not establish market-wide compensation.

Use networking as an information channel
Contact former colleagues, supervisors, field directors, university contacts, regional archaeological networks, and professional associations. A short message can state your role, geographic range, skills, availability, and the kind of project you seek. Ask for leads or advice rather than an unqualified referral. Request permission before listing someone as a reference.
Follow up with people who know your work after you submit an application, but do not ask them to bypass a formal process. Direct employer career pages deserve the same attention as aggregators because firms may post openings only on their own sites or close a listing when a project is staffed.
A practical 30-day job-search workflow
- Days 1–3: Secure records, update contact information, define geography and work constraints, and create the tracker.
- Days 4–7: Set recurring SAA checks; create USAJOBS searches for the title, duty, and GS-0193 terms; bookmark your SHPO, state board, transportation, and natural-resources pages.
- Week 2: Build the master résumé and evidence matrix. Contact references and professional networks. Identify employers whose work matches your target.
- Week 3: Submit tailored applications to roles you are eligible for. Record the exact documents and announcement version used.
- Week 4: Review response rates, remove searches that produce irrelevant results, add missing duty terms, and schedule polite follow-ups where the posting permits them.
Keep the cadence after the first month. Volatile postings and seasonal field work reward consistent monitoring more than one intensive search day.

Common mistakes and how to recover
- Searching only “archaeologist.” Add archeologist, cultural resources, historic preservation, compliance, archaeological resources, GIS, collections, and GS-0193.
- Applying before checking eligibility. Read “This job is open to” first; distinguish the right to apply from meeting qualifications.
- Treating a board as authoritative. Verify the vacancy, closing date, and documents on the hiring organization’s page.
- Sending one résumé everywhere. Keep a master file, but map each submission to the announcement’s duties and required evidence.
- Assuming a temporary job is permanent. Ask about funding, end date, extension history, and the next project.
- Overlooking state and local employers. Check SHPO, archaeology, transportation, natural-resources, county, and municipal channels.
- Claiming CTAP or ICTAP after a private layoff. These programs require qualifying federal status and announcement-specific conditions.
- Failing to clarify field realities. Ask about travel, weather, physical demands, schedule, lodging, and reporting before accepting.
Match the search to your experience
If you are early-career or returning from fieldwork
Prioritize archaeology technician, field technician, survey, monitoring, laboratory, collections, and entry-level compliance roles. Show methods, safety training, documentation, teamwork, and your ability to work on a project schedule. Add coursework or supervised experience when the posting accepts it.
If you have project or supervisory experience
Search project archaeologist, crew chief, principal-investigator support, report manager, and compliance-lead roles. Emphasize scope, schedule, staff, client or agency coordination, review responsibilities, and deliverables.
If your strengths are office or technical
Search GIS, records research, report writing, collections, database, historic-preservation, and agency program roles. Describe the decisions your analysis or documentation enabled, not only the software or database name.
Keep claims proportionate to the evidence
Job listings, hiring policies, and professional postings change. A national search cannot determine which openings fit your state, credentials, family obligations, or employment history. State-office recruitment observations should not be treated as a description of every private CRM employer. Verify current details with the original agency or employer and keep a dated copy of any announcement to which you apply.
