To learn an echo, face an object or monster Zelda encounters and press ZR. To create a learned echo, select it from the echo inventory and press Y. The game named in this title is officially The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: Zelda uses Tri’s Tri Rod to copy objects and monsters, then uses those echoes to solve puzzles, move through Hyrule and fight. You do not craft echoes from gathered materials; once learned, an echo can be made again whenever you want.

What echoes are—and how to find them

Echoes are reusable copies of objects and monsters Zelda encounters during her adventure. Learning one adds it to your collection; summoning it creates that object or monster in the world. They are not consumable items, and you do not need to gather materials to make another copy after learning one. Think of the Tri Rod as a way to add tools to Zelda’s repertoire: the objects and creatures she learns can later be called upon when a puzzle, obstacle or enemy makes their abilities useful.

Finding echoes is part of exploring. Pay attention to unfamiliar objects and enemies, and try learning them when the game allows it. There are over a hundred echoes in the game, according to Nintendo’s official tips article published October 3, 2024. That large collection means it is worth experimenting with things you encounter instead of assuming that only obvious weapons or platforms matter. An ordinary-looking object may still have a useful property, while a monster’s description may hint at how it behaves in a fight.

The order in which players encounter echoes and obstacles can vary, so an echo’s availability is not tied to one universal point in every player’s route. If a particular example is not yet in your collection, keep exploring and learning new objects and monsters as they appear. The useful general method is to notice what is available in your current surroundings, not to assume that every player will have the same echo at the same moment.

Learning an echo is different from finding a solution to a puzzle: an echo might be useful in several situations, and a puzzle may allow more than one approach. Nintendo’s advice is to experiment rather than assume there is one required combination. An echo that helps with height in one place could be useful for a different purpose elsewhere, and another echo may solve the same immediate problem by taking a different approach.

How to learn, summon and remove an echo

  1. Learn it: Face an encountered object or monster and press ZR to learn its echo. This is how you add a new option to the collection.
  2. Choose it: Hold the Right Directional Button or L to open the echo inventory. Use either Control Stick to scroll through the collection and find the echo you want.
  3. Create it: With the echo selected, press Y to summon it in the world. The echo appears as an object or monster that Zelda can use in the situation at hand.
  4. Remove it when needed: Press ZR to erase an echo you made. Hold ZR to erase all echoes currently made on the field.

In practice, the flow is learn, select and create: ZR adds an encountered object or monster to the collection, the inventory lets you choose among learned echoes, and Y creates the selected one. If the field is cluttered or an echo is no longer useful, ZR can clear it. Holding ZR clears all echoes made on the field, so be deliberate if Zelda is depending on a created platform or another object at that moment.

Erasing an echo is a way to clear the field or manage what is active; Nintendo says there is no penalty for repeated echo use. Learning an echo is different from creating one, and erasing a created echo does not mean you have to learn that object or monster again. The key distinction is that pressing ZR while facing something to learn it, and pressing ZR to erase an already-created echo, serve different purposes in context. If you are uncertain which action applies, consider whether you are trying to add something encountered in the world or remove something already summoned.

Choose an echo for the obstacle, not a universal “best”

There is no single best echo combination for every situation. Think about what the obstacle requires: a way to gain height, a platform or bridge, an object interaction, a distraction, or an attack. Then consider where the echo will appear and whether summoning it could displace something Zelda is relying on. Nintendo’s official examples illustrate how one echo can have multiple uses and how different approaches can work.

When two echoes seem plausible, compare their function first: does one help Zelda move or reach a place, while the other interacts with a puzzle or deals damage? Then consider reach and positioning, how much Tri energy each requires, and whether making another echo would cause a useful active echo to disappear. These are practical comparisons, not a universal ranking. The official examples do not establish that one echo is always stronger or better than another, and there is no single combination that fits every obstacle.

Need Echo example How to think about it
Reach a higher place Water blocks or beds Nintendo notes that water blocks can help Zelda reach new heights. Beds can be stacked as makeshift stairs. Think about which option suits the height and positioning you need.
Cross a gap or travel over water Beds Place beds in sequence as a bridge, or use one as a floating platform on water. Check that the created objects are positioned to support the route you are trying to make.
Recover health while exploring Bed Zelda can sleep in a bed echo to regain health, so the same echo can serve a restorative purpose as well as a traversal one.
Hit or pressure an enemy Rock or monster echoes Nintendo suggests throwing a rock echo at an enemy; a monster echo can fight at Zelda’s side. Consider whether you need a direct object-based attack or an ally that can engage in combat.
Distract or exploit the surroundings Meat or environmental hazards Nintendo gives distracting enemies with meat and using environmental hazards as examples of creative tactics. These are options, not mandatory strategies.

Use objects as tools, not just copies

A bed is a clear example of why it helps to consider an echo’s physical properties and not only its name. It can provide a way up when stacked, span space when placed in sequence, float on water, or restore health when Zelda sleeps in it. Those uses do not make the bed the answer to every situation; they show why trying an echo in more than one role can be worthwhile. If a familiar approach does not work, test whether the object can be positioned or used differently.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
  • Save the Kingdom of Hyrule - this time as Princess Zelda - in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for Nintendo Switch
  • In this new installment of The Legend of Zelda range, it's up to Zelda and her wisdom to save the kingdom of Hyrule. Its inhabitants disappear into strange cracks - and with them a very specific sword fighter.
  • Step into the role of Princess Zelda and save Hyrule from a mysterious force. Use their wisdom and tri rod to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
  • Creativity is the key to success: discover the power of Tri-Stab and create imitations of objects and creatures, so-called echoes. Use these echoes to overcome obstacles and take over in battle.
  • Beautifully designed world full of secrets and captivating story full of adventures.

For a gap, for example, think in terms of a sequence of placements rather than a single object doing everything. For height, consider stacking beds as makeshift stairs or using water blocks to gain new elevation. On water, a bed can serve as a floating platform. Each of these examples is about matching an object’s use to the obstacle rather than memorizing one mandatory solution.

The same practical thinking applies to other objects. Nintendo’s example of throwing a rock echo at an enemy shows that an object need not be used only for traversal or puzzle-solving. Meat can distract enemies, and environmental hazards may offer another way to turn the surroundings to Zelda’s advantage. The point is not to force every echo into a specific role but to ask what its properties might let you do in the current setting.

Use monsters for combat and positioning

Monster echoes can fight alongside Zelda. To direct a summoned monster toward a particular enemy, hold ZL. If multiple enemies are available as targets, release ZL and press it again until the intended target is selected. This gives you a way to steer the fight instead of leaving the monster’s target choice entirely to chance.

Target selection matters when there is more than one enemy: keep holding ZL to direct the monster, and cycle the target by releasing and pressing ZL again. This is separate from choosing which monster echo to summon. First select and create the echo using the inventory and Y; then use ZL to direct the summoned monster toward a target.

Echo behavior can also suggest a tactic. The in-game Notebook’s Spear Moblin entry says: “A brutish monster found all over Hyrule. Its hurled spears can reach even high-up targets.” Read descriptions as clues about possible roles, then try the echo when the situation fits. The entry points to reach as a relevant feature; it does not mean that this monster is the best choice in every fight or that you need to use it to solve a particular encounter.

Use the Notebook and sort echoes when the collection grows

The Notebook records learned echoes with descriptions that may hint at their behavior. Open it from the main menu, or use + as a shortcut when first learning an echo or while cycling through the echo inventory. Checking an entry can help when you remember an echo but not what makes it useful. Treat the description as a prompt for experimentation: it can point toward an ability or role without dictating exactly how you must use it.

The inventory can be sorted so you do not have to browse the entire collection in one long sequence. Hold the Right Directional Button or L to open it, then press Y to choose a sort order:

  • Last Used and Most Used help surface echoes based on your recent or frequent choices. They are convenient when you want to return to a familiar tool.
  • Last Learned helps locate something you just added, especially if you want to test a new echo soon after discovering it.
  • Cost is useful when considering Tri’s energy limit. It can help you compare options when available energy is a concern.
  • Type groups echoes by category, which can help narrow the list when you are thinking in terms of objects or monsters.

Use either Control Stick to move through the sorted list and select the echo you want to create. Sorting does not change what an echo does; it is a way to find the option you want more efficiently. If you are trying a new approach, Last Learned can bring a recently discovered echo into view. If you are trying to conserve energy, Cost is the relevant sort choice. If you want a familiar option, Last Used or Most Used may be more useful.

There are over a hundred echoes, so remembering every description and use is not necessary. The Notebook and sorting options let you return to an echo by clue, category, use or cost instead of relying on memory alone. For a specific situation, start with the job to be done, then use those tools to narrow the collection.

Manage Tri’s energy and avoid losing a useful echo

Only a limited number of echoes can be active at once, and different echoes use different amounts of Tri’s energy. Watch the triangular energy indicators when deciding what to summon. If Zelda is already relying on a platform or another object, creating a new echo may cause an existing one to disperse to make room. The relevant consideration is not simply how many objects you see, but how much energy the active echoes use and what may need to disappear when you create another.

A flashing yellow echo is the warning: it identifies the active echo that will disappear first. Before summoning a replacement, check whether that echo is supporting Zelda, bridging a gap or otherwise needed. If it is, consider keeping it in place, removing an echo you no longer need, or finding another way to handle the obstacle before using up the available energy. This is especially important when an echo is doing a job that would be difficult to recreate immediately, such as supporting a route across a gap.

Cost is therefore one factor to weigh alongside function and placement. A lower-cost option may help when you need room to keep other echoes active; a higher-cost one might still be worth creating if its particular role is what the situation calls for. The official guidance does not give a universal cost ranking or declare one cost level best. Check the energy indicators and the yellow warning in the moment rather than assuming that every echo can remain active together.

The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
  • Save the kingdom of Hyrule, this time with the wisdom of Princess Zelda! The people of Hyrule are being swallowed by strange crevices that have arisen, with a certain swordsman among the missing. Now it's up to Princess Zelda to save her kingdom in a new story from The Legend of Zelda !
  • Team up with Tri and use the power of Tri's scepter to create "echoes", which are copies of objects found in the environment. Then recreate these echoes whenever you want to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
  • Create echoes like blocks of water to reach new heights, bridge old beds, throw rocks at enemies, or find your own creative combination of echoes to do everything your own way. You can even create monster echoes to fight alongside you in combat!

If an echo you no longer need is taking up active space, erase it with ZR. If you want to clear all created echoes from the field, hold ZR. Because Nintendo says there is no penalty for repeated echo use, you can remove an unhelpful creation and try another. Still, clearing everything also removes objects you may be relying on, so check the field before using the hold action.

A practical way to experiment

  1. Identify the job. Decide whether you need height, a bridge or platform, an interaction, a distraction, health recovery or damage. A clear goal makes it easier to choose what to try.
  2. Check what you know. Browse the inventory or Notebook for an echo with a relevant description or role. If the collection is large, sort by Type, Cost, Last Learned, Last Used or Most Used, depending on what you need to find.
  3. Compare the options. Consider function, reach or positioning and energy cost. If a platform, bridge or other echo is already active, check whether it may be the next one to disappear.
  4. Try the simplest useful option. Summon an echo with Y and see how it behaves in the actual setting. Objects can work differently depending on where you place them and what you are trying to do.
  5. Adjust rather than repeat blindly. If the result is not useful, erase the echo with ZR, try a different position or select another echo. Nintendo encourages experimentation, and there may be multiple workable solutions.
  6. Direct a monster when needed. If you created a monster echo and want it to attack a particular enemy, hold ZL. With multiple targets, release and press ZL again until the intended one is selected.

The important habit is to treat the collection as a set of flexible tools. Learn what you encounter, use descriptions as hints, and match an echo’s function to the immediate problem rather than searching for a single best choice for the whole game. When an approach fails, that is a reason to adjust the echo, its placement or the tactic—not proof that there is only one correct echo you should have learned.

Game and availability details

Nintendo’s US product listing identifies a physical edition of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for Nintendo Switch, released September 26, 2024, and lists Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility. Those product details do not change the echo controls described above. Compatible Legend of Zelda-themed amiibo are optional: Nintendo says they can unlock rewards such as smoothie ingredients and alternate-color outfits, but they are not required to learn, create or use echoes.

The amiibo rewards are separate from the echo system. You do not need an amiibo to use the Tri Rod, add an echo to the Notebook, summon it or manage Tri’s energy. The game’s core echo loop is learned through encounters and exploration, then used through the inventory and the controls described here.
