Android’s built-in “task manager” is the Recent apps screen: use it to switch between apps or dismiss an app from the list. On supported gesture-navigation phones, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, hold, then let go. If an app is frozen or unresponsive, use Force stop in Settings instead; that is a separate troubleshooting action.
How do I access the Android task manager?
Google calls the built-in screen “recent apps.” The exact gesture and button labels can vary by phone and navigation setup, but Google’s gesture-navigation instructions are:
- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and hold.
- When the recent-apps view appears, let go.
- Swipe left or right to find the app you want, then tap its card to switch to it.
On Android Go with three-button navigation, tap the Recent apps button to open the view. Google documents this as an Android Go option; do not assume the same button or layout appears on every Android phone. See Google’s instructions for switching between recent apps.
How do I close an app on Android?
Close one app
Open the recent-apps view, find the app, then swipe its card up. This dismisses it from the recent-apps screen; it is not the same as force stopping the app through Settings.

Close all apps
Some phones show a Clear all control in the recent-apps view. Google also describes an Android Go flow in which you open recent apps and tap Clear all at the bottom. The control and its placement are not universal, so follow the options shown on your device. Google’s close-app instructions cover the documented variations.
When should I use Force stop instead?
Use Force stop when an app is malfunctioning or not responding, rather than simply to switch apps or clear a card. Google’s troubleshooting path is:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then See all apps.
- Select the unresponsive app.
- Tap Force stop, then OK if prompted.
Settings names and locations vary across phones. If those labels do not match what you see, consult your phone manufacturer’s help information. Google describes the action in its guidance for a device that freezes or won’t respond, and notes that Settings may vary by phone.

Usually, no. Google explains that storage holds items such as music and photos, while memory is used by programs such as apps and Android. It says, “Even if you don’t close apps, you won’t run out of memory or battery. Android manages these automatically.” If an app is not responding, try closing it or force stopping it; routine dismissal is not generally necessary.
