Open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details and record the incompatible driver and company named there. Check Windows Update, then the device manufacturer’s or application publisher’s official support page for a compatible (preferably WHCP-certified) version. If no compatible driver exists, remove the device or software if practical; disabling Memory integrity is a last-resort trade-off because it lowers the protection state of the PC and requires a restart.
What Memory integrity is—and why Windows blocks a driver
Memory integrity is Microsoft’s name for Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI). It uses hardware virtualization to isolate code-integrity checks, making it harder for malicious software to abuse a low-level driver and compromise Windows. The feature depends on virtualization being enabled in your computer’s UEFI or BIOS. Microsoft documents the feature and its driver guidance in Device Security in the Windows Security App.
A driver can be marked incompatible when its code, signing, or behavior does not meet the requirements that Memory integrity enforces. Windows Security normally identifies the driver and its company, but that notification does not necessarily name the physical device or application that installed it. Use those two fields as your starting point rather than guessing from a generic driver category.
The instructions below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Menu names and whether a particular driver is offered can vary by Windows release, hardware, and the policies configured on the PC.

Before you change anything
Memory integrity is a security control, not merely a compatibility switch. If the warning appears on a work, school, or managed computer, check with the administrator before removing a device, installing a replacement driver, or changing the setting. Organization policies can control which drivers are allowed, and a locally installed package may be replaced by management software.
Make a note of the current state and the exact wording of the warning. A screenshot is useful because a driver name can be long, and the list may change after an update or restart. If the device or application is important, back up its settings and any data it controls before uninstalling it. Do not download a package simply because a third-party site claims it is newer; the wrong kernel driver can make the device unusable or introduce a security risk.
If Memory integrity itself cannot be enabled because virtualization is off, that is a separate prerequisite issue. Enable hardware virtualization in UEFI or BIOS only according to the computer maker’s instructions. The incompatible-driver procedure below addresses a driver warning shown by Windows Security; it does not replace firmware-specific setup instructions.
1. Record the driver Windows says is incompatible
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu or the taskbar notification area.
- Select Device security.
- Under Core isolation, select Core isolation details.
- Read the Memory integrity section. If Windows has identified a conflict, it may list one or more incompatible drivers.
- Write down the complete driver name and the company name shown in the warning. Capture a screenshot as well if the entry is long.
That name-and-company combination is the reliable information to give a device manufacturer or application publisher. This general procedure cannot identify a particular model without seeing the entry, your Windows version, and the software or hardware installed on the PC.
If several entries appear, record every one before beginning. Updating one package may reveal another incompatible driver, and treating only the first line can leave Memory integrity unable to start. Keep the spelling, punctuation, and file extension exactly as displayed. A similar filename from another company may belong to a completely different product.
How to connect a driver name to a device or app
The Windows Security notification may identify a file and publisher but not the product that installed it. Compare the company name with the publishers shown under Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Also consider recently connected peripherals, virtual devices, storage utilities, security tools, and audio or network software, all of which can install low-level drivers.
Device Manager can help you map a physical component to a vendor, but do not remove a device there merely to make the warning disappear. Open Device Manager, expand the likely category, and inspect a device’s properties and provider information. Use the model and provider details to locate the official support page. The driver and company shown in Core isolation remain the authoritative starting point for the support request.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If an application appears responsible, check its version and installation date. Some products update their kernel driver only when the entire application is updated. Others require a separate driver package. Ask the publisher which supported procedure replaces the exact driver named by Windows.
2. Check Windows Update before downloading anything manually
Windows Update is the safest first source because it can match a package to the specific hardware ID, Windows edition, and policy on the machine. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install any offered updates. Restart if Windows requests it, then return to Core isolation details and test Memory integrity again.
Install ordinary quality and feature updates as well as a driver package when Windows offers them. A firmware or servicing update can affect which driver is appropriate, so keep the computer connected to power and avoid interrupting the installation. If the update fails, note the displayed error and contact the computer or device manufacturer rather than repeatedly forcing the same package.
Find optional driver updates in Windows 11
Microsoft’s documented path for optional driver packages is Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. Select a driver only when it corresponds to the device or component that produced the warning, then choose Download and install. The availability of this page and the packages listed there depends on the PC and its Windows servicing channel. The path is described in Microsoft’s Understanding driver updates article, published October 20, 2025, whose detailed version scope covers Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 and Windows Server 2025.

Windows 10 and some managed Windows 11 systems may show different labels or may not expose optional drivers in the same place. If you do not see the page, use the normal Windows Update check and then move to the responsible vendor’s support site. An empty optional-update list does not prove that the manufacturer has no package.
Do not pick a package solely by its displayed date
A date displayed for a driver is descriptive information supplied by the provider, not a universal freshness ranking. Microsoft explains that Windows Update uses provider targeting information when selecting a driver, so a package with a seemingly newer date is not automatically the better or more compatible choice. Install the package Windows offers for the identified device or follow the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.
Compare the device model, Windows version, architecture, and package description instead of sorting by date. A package intended for a different revision of a component can have a newer date and still be wrong. If two packages appear to match, ask the vendor which one supports Memory integrity and your exact Windows build.
3. Get a compatible package from the responsible vendor
If Windows Update has no suitable package, identify who supplied the driver. A component such as a printer, storage controller, network adapter, audio interface, or security tool may have its own driver; an application can also install a kernel-level driver.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the device manufacturer’s support page
- Locate the exact device model or the computer’s make and model. The model printed on the chassis, the original invoice, or Settings > System > About can help.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support site, select the exact model and your Windows version, and look under drivers, firmware, or downloads.
- Compare the package description with the driver name and company shown by Windows Security.
- Read the release notes for a statement that the package supports Memory integrity, HVCI, or current Windows security requirements. If the vendor uses the term Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP), ask whether the package is WHCP-certified.
- Download only from that official support source, install according to the vendor’s instructions, and restart when prompted.
Microsoft specifically advises checking with the device manufacturer for an updated driver. Its support guidance is available at Device Security in the Windows Security App.
Check both the computer maker and the component maker when appropriate. A laptop manufacturer may customize a graphics, storage, or wireless driver, while the component maker may publish a newer generic package. Use the package that the responsible vendor says is supported for your model and Windows version; do not assume the generic download is interchangeable.
When an application installed the driver
If the company in the warning belongs to an application rather than a hardware maker, check the application publisher’s support documentation or contact its support team. Provide the exact driver name, company, Windows edition and version, and the application version. Ask whether a Memory-integrity-compatible or WHCP-certified release exists. Updating the application itself may be the supported way to replace its driver.
Some applications install a driver for a feature that is not obvious from the program name, such as virtualization, backup, encryption, device synchronization, or hardware monitoring. Removing only a file can leave services or registry entries behind. Follow the publisher’s uninstall or upgrade procedure so the old driver is replaced cleanly.

Microsoft’s blocked-driver guidance, A driver can’t load on this device, recommends Windows Update or the driver manufacturer and cautions users to obtain signed drivers from official vendors.
4. Install, restart, and test the replacement
Close applications that use the device before running the vendor installer. Read each installer screen so you know whether it is updating an existing component or adding optional software. Do not install a package that is meant for another Windows version, processor architecture, or device revision. If the installer offers to create a restore point or backup, use that option when available.
Restart when the installer or Windows requests it. A kernel driver can remain loaded until restart, so checking the Core isolation page immediately after installation can give a misleading result. After rebooting, return to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details and try enabling Memory integrity. If Windows reports a new filename, record it and repeat the identification process.

Test the device or application after Memory integrity is enabled. Confirm the function you rely on—printing, networking, audio capture, storage access, or the application’s main feature—still works. If the replacement breaks the device, use the vendor’s documented rollback or uninstall procedure and contact support with the exact package version and error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. If no compatible driver is available
Do not keep installing older packages in the hope that one will bypass the warning. If neither Windows Update nor the responsible vendor provides a compatible release, Microsoft says you may need to remove the device or application that uses the driver.
Remove a nonessential device or application
- Decide what function depends on it—for example, a legacy peripheral, virtual device, or specialist utility.
- Back up settings or data associated with that device or application.
- Unplug or uninstall it using the vendor’s documented removal procedure. For software, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), unless the publisher specifies another method.
- Restart Windows, return to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details, and check whether the warning has cleared.
Removing a driver file by hand can leave the device or application broken and is not a substitute for removing the component that owns it. If the hardware has not yet been installed, wait until a compatible driver is available rather than installing it and immediately disabling a security control.
Before uninstalling, document any settings you will need to recreate and check whether another device depends on the same application. For a removable peripheral, disconnect it after shutting down any software that uses it. For software, use the publisher’s removal tool when one is provided. After the restart, verify that the incompatible entry is gone rather than assuming the uninstall succeeded.
Ask the vendor about a planned fix
A support representative can sometimes confirm whether a replacement is in development or whether a newer package is available for a different Windows build. Keep the driver and company names exactly as Windows displays them; similar-sounding entries can belong to different products.
Ask whether the vendor has a supported workaround, a beta package, or a replacement product, and whether using it affects warranty or support. Do not install an unofficial beta on a production computer without understanding the risks. If the vendor confirms that the device will not receive a compatible driver, removal or replacement is the durable way to restore Memory integrity.
6. Understand the consequences before disabling Memory integrity
Microsoft lists turning off Memory integrity as an option when a blocked driver is required, but recommends looking for a compatible update first. Disabling the feature removes the HVCI protection that helps isolate code-integrity enforcement. On a Secured-core PC, Microsoft warns that turning it off takes the device out of its Secured-core state. Windows also requires a restart for the change to take effect. See A driver can’t load on this device for Microsoft’s warning.
This is a security trade-off, not a repair for the driver. A driver may load once the control is off, but the underlying incompatibility remains. Future Windows updates can expose the same conflict again, and other security policies may still block the driver.
If you decide the device’s function is essential and accept that trade-off:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details.
- Set Memory integrity to Off.
- Confirm the warning and restart when Windows asks.
- Install or use the required device only if you trust its source and understand that the protection state has changed.
Re-enable Memory integrity after replacing or removing the incompatible driver: return to the same page, switch it to On, and restart. If Windows still reports a conflict, repeat the identification and vendor-update process rather than assuming the setting failed.
On a Secured-core PC, record that the machine is no longer in its Secured-core state while the feature is disabled. If the computer is managed, tell the administrator before making the change. When the required device is no longer needed, remove its software or replace its driver first, then turn Memory integrity back on and confirm the status after restarting.

7. Use Event Viewer only for the right kind of blocked-driver notification
If your symptom is a driver-block notification and the entry is not clear, Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy instructions direct you to Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational. Under that policy, Event ID 3077 indicates that enforcement blocked a driver; the event details include the driver name and the process that attempted to load it. The instructions are in The Windows Driver Policy.
Open the event’s details and copy the driver name and process before contacting support. The process can show which application attempted to load the file, while the driver name can be compared with the Core isolation entry. Preserve the timestamp and Windows build as well, especially if the block happens only when a particular program starts.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Keep the scope precise: Event ID 3077 is documented for the Windows Driver Policy’s blocked-driver events. It is not proof that every Memory integrity incompatibility generates that event. For a warning shown directly in Core isolation, the driver name on that screen remains the first diagnostic.
Which remedy fits your situation?
| Option | When it fits | Checks before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update driver | First update attempt; Windows may already offer a compatible package. | Look for the specific device under Optional updates and confirm it matches the warning. |
| Manufacturer or application-publisher driver | Windows Update offers nothing compatible. | Use the exact model and Windows version, an official source, and confirmation of Memory integrity or WHCP compatibility. |
| Remove the device or application | No compatible driver exists and the function is not essential. | Determine what will stop working and back up its settings or data first. |
| Disable Memory integrity | The driver is necessary and you knowingly accept reduced protection. | Check whether the PC is Secured-core; disabling the feature removes that state and requires a restart. |
Use the least disruptive option that restores a supported configuration. Windows Update is preferable when it offers the correct package because it handles targeting and servicing. A manufacturer package is appropriate when it is model-specific and explicitly supports your Windows release. Removal is safer than leaving an obsolete driver active when the device is not needed. Disabling Memory integrity should remain exceptional because it changes the security posture of the entire PC.

The warning names a file but not a product
Use the company field beside the driver name, then search that company’s official support site for the exact filename or driver package. Check installed applications and connected devices for a matching publisher. Do not infer the product solely from a filename that could be shared by multiple vendors.
The Optional updates page is empty
That means Windows Update is not currently offering a package for this PC; it does not prove that no vendor update exists. Check the manufacturer or application publisher, verify the Windows version and device model, and ask support about a compatible or WHCP-certified release.
The driver appears newer by date but still fails
Provider dates are not a reliable compatibility test. Confirm that the package targets your exact model and Windows release, and that it replaces the driver named in Core isolation. If it does not, contact the vendor instead of repeatedly installing packages.
Memory integrity stays off after an update
Restart after installing the package, then open Core isolation details and try enabling Memory integrity again. If Windows names a different driver, record that new entry and begin the same identification process for it.
The warning returns after every restart
Check whether a companion application or automatic updater reinstalls the old driver. Remove or update the owning application through its supported procedure, then restart and test again. If the old entry returns, give the vendor the driver name, company, package version, and the time it reappears.
You are unsure whether Event ID 3077 applies
Use Event Viewer’s CodeIntegrity log when Windows reports a policy-based block and you need the process and driver details. Do not treat the absence of Event ID 3077 as evidence that a Core isolation warning is harmless; the two diagnostics describe different reporting paths.
The device is essential but unsupported
Ask the manufacturer whether a WHCP-certified replacement, newer firmware, or a newer Windows-specific package exists. If no supported option is available, weigh replacing the device against disabling Memory integrity. On a managed or Secured-core PC, involve the administrator before changing the protection setting.

A concise decision checklist
- Have you copied the exact driver and company names from Core isolation details?
- Have you checked Settings > Windows Update and, on Windows 11, Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates?
- Did you verify the exact device model, Windows version, and official vendor source?
- Did you ask an application publisher about a compatible or WHCP-certified release when software installed the driver?
- Did you restart after installing or removing the component and recheck Core isolation?
- If no update exists, can you remove the device or app without losing a needed function?
- If you are considering disabling Memory integrity, have you assessed the security trade-off and whether the PC is Secured-core?
What information to provide when seeking support
Support can identify a replacement faster when you include the complete driver name and company from Windows Security, your Windows edition and version, the computer or device model, the application that may have installed the driver, and whether Windows Update offered any package. Include the exact wording of the warning and, when relevant, the CodeIntegrity event details. This prevents a vendor from sending a generic package that does not match your hardware or Windows build.
Also include the driver package version you tried, its installation date, whether the computer restarted, and what happened when you attempted to enable Memory integrity. If you removed a device or application, state whether the warning cleared. Screenshots of Core isolation and the relevant Event Viewer entry can save several rounds of questions, but redact personal or organizational information before sharing them publicly.
Frequently asked questions
Is Memory integrity the same as HVCI?
Yes. HVCI means Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity, and Memory integrity is the Windows Security name for that protection feature. It uses hardware virtualization and requires virtualization to be enabled in UEFI or BIOS.
Should I install the driver with the newest date?
No. Microsoft says the displayed date is descriptive information chosen by the provider. Windows Update uses provider targeting information, so match the exact device and Windows version rather than choosing by date alone.
Where should I download an incompatible-driver update?
Check Windows Update first. If no compatible package is offered, use the responsible device manufacturer’s official support page or contact the application publisher that installed the driver. Avoid unattributed driver-download sites.
What if the vendor has no update?
Ask whether a compatible or WHCP-certified release is planned. If none is available, Microsoft says you may need to remove the device or application. If the device is not yet installed, wait until a compatible driver exists.
Can I leave Memory integrity turned off?
You can choose that option when a required driver has no compatible release, but it reduces protection. On a Secured-core PC, Microsoft warns that disabling it takes the device out of its Secured-core state, and Windows requires a restart. Treat it as a last resort and turn it back on after replacing or removing the driver.
The Tool Desk

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the incompatible driver?
Open Windows Security, choose Device security, then Core isolation details. Record the complete driver and company names shown under the Memory integrity warning.
What is the safest update method?
Check Settings > Windows Update first, including Optional updates > Driver updates on Windows 11. If nothing suitable is offered, use the responsible manufacturer’s or application publisher’s official support page.
What should I do if no compatible driver exists?
Ask the vendor whether a compatible or WHCP-certified release is planned. If the device or app is not essential, remove it using the supported procedure. Disabling Memory integrity should be reserved for a necessary device when you accept the security trade-off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does the driver date not settle the issue?
Microsoft says provider-supplied dates are descriptive. Windows Update uses targeting information, so a package with a newer displayed date is not automatically the correct or most compatible driver.
What does disabling Memory integrity do to a Secured-core PC?
Microsoft warns that disabling Memory integrity takes a Secured-core PC out of its Secured-core state. The change also requires a restart.
The Bottom Line
Start with the exact driver and company named in Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details. Check Windows Update, then obtain a Memory-integrity-compatible package from the responsible device manufacturer or application publisher. If no supported driver exists, remove the component when practical; disable Memory integrity only when the function is essential and you understand the security and Secured-core consequences.
