In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, select its More options menu, and choose Uninstall. You can also uninstall many apps from Start, or use Control Panel if a desktop program cannot be removed from Settings. Some built-in Windows apps cannot be uninstalled.
Check which apps are installed before removing anything
Start with the Windows app lists rather than deleting files or folders yourself. Microsoft’s guidance identifies both Settings > Apps > Installed apps and the Start menu as places to check. Settings is the main inventory route in Windows 11; Start offers a quicker way to locate and remove many apps.
Review the name of an app and confirm what it does before uninstalling it. An app you do not recognize may support a device, another program, or a task you still need. If you are unsure, pause and check its purpose rather than removing it simply because it is unfamiliar. Some components are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled through the normal process.

Select Start > All apps to browse the installed-app list. Microsoft describes this list as showing the most-used apps first, followed by an alphabetical list. If an app is not obvious in Settings, look here too. The Start list can also provide a direct uninstall option.

Uninstall an app in Windows 11 Settings
- Open Settings: Select Start > Settings.
- Open the app inventory: Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app: Browse the list and identify the app you intend to remove.
- Open its options: Select the More options menu beside the app.
- Choose Uninstall: Follow any prompts Windows or the app’s uninstaller displays to finish removing it.
If you do not see an Uninstall choice, the app may not support removal through that screen, or it may be a built-in Windows component. Do not treat the absence of the option as a reason to delete the app’s folder manually. Try the other supported routes below when appropriate.
Uninstall from Start
- Select Start > All apps.
- Find the app in the list.
- Right-click the app and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts to complete removal.
This is a convenient alternative when you have already found the app in Start. If the menu does not offer Uninstall, or the removal does not succeed, use Settings or try Control Panel for a desktop program.

When to use Control Panel
Some desktop programs may not be removable from Settings. For those, Microsoft documents the traditional Control Panel route: Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Find the program, right-click it, and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change. Follow the program’s prompts.
Start or Settings are sensible first choices; Control Panel is the next route to try when a desktop program is unavailable through Settings. These are different entry points to an uninstall process, not permission to remove arbitrary Windows files. If the program still will not uninstall, use the troubleshooting steps below.

Choose a removal route by what you find

Decide whether an app is unnecessary
“Unnecessary” depends on how you use the PC. A program can be unused by one person and essential to another. Make the choice based on the app’s purpose and whether you still rely on it, not only on whether its name is familiar or it is absent from your day-to-day routine.
- Confirm its purpose. If you cannot tell what an app does, check before removing it. Avoid uninstalling a component just because its name is unfamiliar.
- Consider whether you still use it. If you no longer need an app, removing it can free storage and may reduce background activity. Microsoft describes these as possible benefits, not a guaranteed speed improvement.
- Use the supported uninstall option. Prefer Settings, Start, or Control Panel over deleting program folders. Removing files manually is not a substitute for an app’s uninstall process.
- Stop if Windows offers no uninstall option. Some apps are built into Windows. Do not use force-removal as routine cleanup.
Uninstalling apps can be useful housekeeping, but it does not guarantee a faster PC. The benefit depends on the app and whether it was using storage or running background activity. Avoid promising yourself a particular performance gain from removing an app.

If an app is missing or uninstall fails
The app does not appear where you expected
Check both Installed apps and Start > All apps. If the item is a desktop program that Settings does not list as removable, look in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. If it is built into Windows, normal uninstallation may not be available.

- Restart the PC, then try the uninstall again.
- Look for Repair in Settings. If the app offers a Repair option, try it.
- Try Reset if needed. Use Reset only if the option is available for that app and Repair has not resolved the problem.
- Follow any Windows troubleshooting prompts. The available options depend on the app; not all desktop programs offer Repair or Reset.
Microsoft distinguishes Store apps from desktop programs in its troubleshooting guidance. For desktop-program problems on Windows 10—when a program fails to install, uninstall, or update—Microsoft identifies the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. That guidance is specifically for Windows 10 desktop-program issues; it should not be treated as a universal fix for every app or Windows version.

Windows labels differ by version
The main Settings steps in this guide use Windows 11’s Installed apps label. Microsoft’s Windows 10 performance guidance uses the older Apps & features label. Menu names and positions can vary by Windows version and update, so follow the labels shown on your PC rather than assuming every screen is identical.
Handle suspicious software differently
An unwanted app is not necessarily malware. Microsoft describes potentially unwanted apps as software that may show unwanted advertising, mine cryptocurrency, or offer unexpected apps. If you suspect malware or other suspicious software, uninstall unwanted software through a supported route and run a scan with Windows Security.
Do not substitute manual deletion of program folders for an uninstall, and do not assume that ordinary app cleanup is enough to address suspected malware. The uninstall steps remove an app; the security scan is the appropriate additional action when you have reason to suspect a threat.

What to expect after uninstalling
Follow the prompts until the uninstall process finishes. Removing an unused app may reclaim storage and may reduce background activity, but the amount of any benefit depends on the app; Microsoft does not provide a numerical performance gain for this routine. If the program remains listed or the uninstall reports an error, restart and use the recovery steps rather than deleting its files by hand.
