Start with Settings > Battery > Battery usage (the wording varies by phone). Check which apps or system functions used the most power, then change the background setting for the specific offender. After that, review brightness and screen timeout, mobile and location connections, Battery Saver or Power saving, and Adaptive Battery. Make one change at a time so you know what helped and so you do not accidentally stop notifications or syncing you need.
Android menus differ by manufacturer, model, software release, and carrier. If a path below is not visible, open Settings and search for Battery, or use your phone maker’s support instructions.
1. Find what is using the battery
Battery controls are most useful when you inspect actual recent use instead of disabling features at random. Begin after normal use for a few hours, or after a full day in which you noticed the drain. An app at the top of the list may simply reflect heavy screen time, navigation, video, gaming, camera use, tethering, a long call, or a weak mobile signal.
Open the battery-use report
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery usage, Battery usage since last charge, or the closest label shown on your phone.
- Review the graph, the percentage used, and the list of apps or services.
Some phones show a period selector such as the last 24 hours; others show use since the most recent charge. Read the time range before interpreting a percentage. Percentages can fail to total exactly 100 percent because of rounding, so a small mismatch is normal.

Pixel phones: separate apps from system functions
On supported Pixel software, the battery page has View by apps and View by systems. Use View by apps to rank installed apps, then switch to View by systems to see functions such as the screen or mobile network when the phone offers that view. A high system entry does not automatically indicate a fault; it may reflect how you used the phone or the conditions in which it connected.
Samsung Galaxy phones: include screen-on time
On many Galaxy models, open Settings > Battery > View details. The report can include app consumption together with screen-on and screen-off time. Samsung notes that the exact route and labels vary with the carrier, model, and software version, so treat this as a typical path rather than a universal one.
Relate the list to your behavior
Before restricting the first item, ask what it was doing during the period shown:
- A video, game, camera session, navigation route, hotspot, or long call can legitimately put its app near the top.
- Streaming, moving between cell towers, or using data in a weak-signal area can increase radio use.
- A bright screen that stayed on for hours can make the display or the foreground app look like the main drain.
- Heat makes a battery discharge faster even while the phone is idle. A warm phone in direct sun, a hot car, or under a pillow needs cooling before you draw conclusions.
Look for a pattern over more than one period when possible. An app that is high only after a long video session is a different case from an app that keeps consuming power while you are not using it.
2. Restrict background activity for a specific app
Background limits are the most targeted software change because they address an app that continues working when it is not on screen. They also have the clearest trade-off: delayed notifications, mail, messages, location updates, backups, health measurements, or wearable synchronization.
Pixel: check “Allow background usage”
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Tap the app in the list.
- When the control is available, review Allow background usage.
- Keep Optimized for most apps. Change the setting only when the app is repeatedly using power in the background and you accept the effect on its operation.
Some Pixel releases also expose the list through Settings > Apps > App battery usage. Not every app offers the same controls. If there is no background option, use the app’s own settings, Android’s broader battery controls, or the manufacturer’s guidance rather than forcing an unrelated setting.

Samsung Galaxy: use Background usage limits
- Open Settings > Battery > Background usage limits.
- Review Put unused apps to sleep if that switch is present.
- Open Sleeping apps to see apps Samsung has placed there, or add an app yourself.
- Use Deep sleeping apps only for apps that do not need to run until you open them.
Samsung describes a deep-sleeping app as one that does not run in the background and works only when you open it. That makes it unsuitable for time-sensitive messaging, mail, two-factor authentication, navigation, health, security, smart-home, or wearable apps unless delayed updates are acceptable. If an app must deliver promptly, remove it from a sleep list and test notifications before relying on it.
Choose the smallest restriction that solves the problem

Do not place every app in a restrictive category. Start with one high-use app, observe a normal day, and restore its previous setting if an important function stops working.
3. Reduce display-related drain
The display can consume substantial power simply because it is bright and on. Adjust it when the battery report or your habits show long screen-on periods.
- Open Settings > Display (or Display & touch on some phones).
- Lower Brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable.
- Enable Adaptive brightness or Automatic brightness if you want the phone to adjust brightness to ambient light.
- Open Screen timeout and choose a shorter interval that still lets you read without repeated wake-ups.
- If your model has an always-on display, review that option and disable it only if the information is not useful to you.
A shorter timeout saves power when you set the phone down, but an interval that is too short can interrupt reading and cause repeated touches. Lower brightness is useful during ordinary use; adaptive brightness may be more practical when lighting changes throughout the day. These controls affect display time, not an app that is using the processor or network while the screen is off.
4. Use Battery Saver or Power saving deliberately
Android Battery Saver
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver, or use the Battery Saver button in Quick Settings. Battery Saver is designed for situations in which preserving the remaining charge matters more than unrestricted background activity. Android says it can limit or turn off background activity and may delay visual effects, features, network connections, or apps. A delayed sync is expected behavior, not proof that the phone is broken.

Use it temporarily when you are away from a charger, traveling, or waiting for an important call with little charge left. Turn it off when you need normal background delivery, high performance, or uninterrupted syncing.

Samsung Power saving
On Galaxy phones, open Settings > Battery and select Power saving. Available choices can limit background network use and syncing, reduce processor speed, lower brightness, or disable the Always On Display. The switches differ by model and software version, so read each option’s description before enabling it.
Power saving is a temporary operating mode rather than a diagnosis. If one app is responsible for unusual idle use, identify and address that app instead of leaving the whole phone in a restricted mode permanently.
Adaptive Battery
On Pixel, Google advises leaving Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled. Adaptive Battery learns usage patterns and manages less-used apps more aggressively over time. Its behavior is intended to preserve ordinary use without requiring you to micromanage every app.

Radios and location services are useful but can draw power when they are continuously searching, transferring data, or supporting an active feature. Change only connections you are not using.
Mobile data and Wi-Fi
- When reliable Wi-Fi is available, use it instead of mobile data for large downloads and streaming.
- Turn off a personal hotspot as soon as tethering ends; connected devices can keep the radio and data session active.
- If you are in an area with no mobile service and do not need calls or mobile data, Airplane mode can stop repeated network searching. Re-enable the radios before expecting cellular service.
Do not assume that mobile data is always the cause. A strong, stable cellular connection may use less power than a phone repeatedly searching in a weak-signal area. Check the battery report and your location before choosing a change.
Bluetooth
Turn Bluetooth off from Settings or Quick Settings when you are not using headphones, a car system, a watch, or another accessory. Leave it on when an accessory must remain connected; repeatedly reconnecting can be less convenient than the modest power cost of an established connection.

Location
Open Settings > Location and review which apps have access. Turn Location off only when you do not need navigation, geofencing, emergency features, device finding, or another location-dependent service. Some apps and phone features will not work correctly without it. A better compromise may be changing an individual app’s permission or allowing access only while the app is in use, if your Android version offers that choice.

Samsung describes a specific network scenario in which a Galaxy phone maintains 5G together with 3G/LTE connectivity to preserve service. In those conditions, using 3G/LTE alone can reduce radio activity. This is not a universal ranking of 5G as the main battery drain: network coverage, carrier configuration, modem behavior, and your location determine the result. If your Galaxy has a preferred-network option, test a lower-generation setting only where it still provides the service you need.
6. Compare changes by benefit and lost functionality
There is no official controlled percentage showing exactly how much each setting saves on every Android phone. Use the following decision guide instead of promises about extra hours.

Apply one change, use the phone normally, and look at the next comparable battery period. Reversing a change is part of the test: a setting is not an improvement if it saves power by breaking a function you rely on.

After a Pixel software update
Google says Pixel battery use may be somewhat higher for a few days after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Avoid judging the update from the first hours alone unless the phone is dangerously hot or losing charge unusually fast.

After initial setup or a factory reset, Google says Adaptive Battery can take a few weeks to learn. During that period, indexing, downloads, account synchronization, and app updates can make use look different from the eventual pattern.

These timing notes are Pixel-specific. Other Android manufacturers may use different optimization behavior, so do not apply the same schedule automatically to every model.
8. Troubleshoot persistent drain
Restart and update
- Restart the phone normally.
- Open Settings > System > Software update, or the equivalent update page for your manufacturer, and install available Android updates.
- Open the app store, review pending updates, and update apps.
- After updates finish, use the phone normally and inspect Battery usage again.
Restarting clears a stuck process. Updates can fix battery-related bugs or compatibility problems, but they can also produce a short period of extra activity while the phone optimizes.
Keep the phone cool
Google’s Android guidance states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Heat can also damage the battery. Move the phone out of direct sun, remove insulating coverings while it cools, stop intensive tasks, and avoid charging it in a hot environment. If it becomes unusually hot, stop using it until it returns to a safe temperature.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the drain continues after a restart, current software, sensible background settings, and normal temperatures, contact the phone manufacturer. Give support the model, Android version, when the drain began, the Battery usage entries, whether the phone is hot, and which changes you already tested. That information helps distinguish a software process from a battery or charging fault.
Factory reset is a last resort
A factory reset erases the phone’s data and is not an early battery-saving step. Consider it only after support recommends it or after you have backed up everything and consciously accepted the loss of local data. Confirm that photos, messages, authenticator codes, files, and app data are recoverable before proceeding.
9. A repeatable 15-minute check
Use this short sequence whenever battery life suddenly changes:
- Note the battery level, temperature, signal conditions, and what you were doing.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and record the top app or system entry.
- Decide whether the entry matches recent screen time, navigation, streaming, tethering, calls, or poor coverage.
- If it does not, open that app’s background-use controls and keep the least restrictive setting that solves the idle activity.
- Review display brightness and timeout, then disable only unused radios or location access.
- Use Battery Saver or Power saving when the immediate goal is preserving the remaining charge.
- Change one setting and check the next normal usage period before making another change.
- Restart and update if the pattern persists; seek manufacturer support if heat or unexplained drain remains.
This approach finds the cause before restricting features, preserves the notifications and services you need, and gives you a clear way to undo a setting that causes unwanted side effects.
