Start with Settings → Battery → Battery usage (the wording varies by phone). Identify the app or system activity at the top, then change only the setting responsible: restrict unnecessary background work, reduce screen use, or turn off connectivity and location services you are not using. Use Battery Saver for a temporary reduction in background activity, not as a universal fix. Android menus and controls differ between manufacturers and versions, so a missing option is normal; use your phone maker’s support instructions when the paths below do not match.
Find what is using your battery before turning anything off
Battery changes are most effective when they target the actual outlier. Disabling features at random can break notifications, navigation, calls, or syncing without addressing the drain.
Open the battery-usage report
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery. If you do not see it, use Settings search for “battery.”
- Tap Battery usage, Battery usage by app, or a similarly named item.
- Review the period shown and the apps or system categories using the most power. Some phones let you switch between an app view and a system or hardware view.
On Pixel phones, Battery usage reports use since the last full charge and provide View by apps and View by systems. The displayed values are rounded, so they may not add up to exactly 100 percent. Google documents this report in Pixel Phone Help.
Look for a pattern rather than one isolated number. A navigation app during a long trip, a video app while streaming, or a game during an extended session can legitimately appear high. An app that remains near the top when you have barely used it is a stronger candidate for background investigation.

Separate app drain from activity or hardware drain
If a system category, screen, mobile network, hotspot, Bluetooth, or location service dominates, restricting one app will not solve the underlying use. If one app is clearly higher than comparable apps and continues climbing while you are not using it, inspect that app’s background behavior first.
Stop unnecessary background activity in a specific app
Background restriction is a targeted control. It can reduce an app’s ability to refresh, upload, synchronize, or deliver notifications while you are not actively using it, but it can also delay information you expect.
Pixel instructions
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage.
- Tap the app with unusually high use.
- Review Allow background usage.
- Leave an eligible app on Optimized unless its background activity is demonstrably unnecessary.
- If your Pixel offers a more restrictive choice, select it only when you accept delayed refreshes or notifications, then observe the battery report over the next charge cycle.
Google recommends keeping eligible apps optimized in general. The exact choices and labels vary by Pixel model, Android release, and app. Google’s explanation is at Fix battery drain problem.
Decide which apps are safe to restrict
- Usually reasonable: an infrequently used game, shopping app, social feed, or media app that does not need immediate alerts.
- Use caution: messaging, email, calendar, authentication, wearable, backup, accessibility, device-finding, and home-automation apps whose background work you rely on.
- Do not force-stop essential services casually: Android or Google components may be needed for calls, security, synchronization, or other core functions. Stopping them can make the phone work incorrectly.
Some apps expose no adjustable battery control. In that case, check for an in-app sync or notification setting, install the latest app update, or contact the developer rather than repeatedly force-stopping it.
Reduce battery use from the screen
The display is often a major consumer when it stays bright or active. These changes reduce screen-on time without disabling app functions.

Lower brightness and shorten the timeout
- Open Settings → Display (sometimes Display & touch).
- Lower the brightness slider to a comfortable level, or enable Adaptive brightness or Automatic brightness if your phone provides it.
- Tap Screen timeout or Sleep and choose a shorter interval that still suits your use.
Long navigation sessions, video playback, and graphics-heavy games keep the display and often the processor active. For those activities, reducing brightness and avoiding an unnecessarily long timeout can help, but there is no universal percentage saving: results depend on the screen, brightness, network conditions, and workload.
Try Dark theme where supported
Open Settings → Display → Dark theme (the label may be Dark mode) and schedule or enable it if you prefer. Dark theme changes the interface; it does not stop background activity, location, or mobile data. Its battery effect depends on the display technology and the apps you use, so treat it as an optional screen adjustment rather than a guaranteed fix.

Google lists hotspot and tethering, prolonged GPS use, streaming, moving calls, mobile-network use, Bluetooth, and location access among activities users can limit. Disable only a service that is not needed for the task at hand: doing so can stop navigation, device tracking, wearables, casting, payments, or other app features.
Hotspot and tethering
When another device is connected, your phone is maintaining a radio link and often using mobile data continuously. Turn it off from Settings → Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering, or from the Quick Settings tile. Names differ by manufacturer. Confirm that connected devices no longer need the hotspot before disabling it.
Mobile data, Wi-Fi, and streaming
Video and music streaming keep the screen, network, and processor busy. Download media for offline use when practical, reduce streaming quality in the app, or stop playback when you are finished. In Google’s general Android guidance, Wi-Fi may use less battery than mobile data; actual results vary with signal strength and the network around you. Turning off mobile data can prevent apps from connecting away from Wi-Fi, while turning off Wi-Fi can interrupt local devices and calls that depend on it.

Bluetooth and nearby devices
Turn Bluetooth off from Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Bluetooth or Quick Settings when you are not using headphones, a watch, a car, or another accessory. The path can differ. Re-enable it before expecting a paired accessory to reconnect.
Location and GPS
For a temporary change, open Settings → Location and turn location off, or review App location permissions to remove “always” access from apps that do not need it. Navigation, emergency features, device-finding, geofencing, weather, and some camera functions may stop or become less accurate. A better targeted choice is to keep location enabled and change an individual app to Allow only while using the app when that option is available.
Use Battery Saver as a deliberate trade-off
Battery Saver is useful when you need extra runtime immediately, such as during travel or when you cannot charge. It may limit or turn off background activity, change visual behavior, and delay network connections, features, or apps. The exact behavior and controls depend on the phone.
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery Saver, or tap the Battery Saver tile in Quick Settings.
- Read the mode description and review any schedule, automatic turn-on percentage, or app exceptions offered.
- Enable it for the period you need, then turn it off when normal syncing and notifications matter again.
Battery Saver is not a diagnosis. If one app is draining the phone, a targeted restriction is less disruptive. If the screen, hotspot, streaming, or navigation is responsible, changing that activity addresses the cause more directly.
Keep Android’s adaptive battery features enabled
On Pixel, Google recommends Adaptive Battery and battery optimization while you investigate drain. Optimization learns from recent use and may take a few weeks after initial setup or a factory reset to take full effect. A Pixel can also use more battery for a few days after a software update while it finishes work in the background. These timings are Pixel-specific guidance, not a promise for every Android phone.

Check Settings → Battery → Adaptive preferences (or search Settings for “Adaptive Battery”) and leave the feature enabled unless your manufacturer’s support instructions say otherwise. Avoid judging the result immediately after setup, reset, or an update; first allow the device to complete its learning and maintenance period.
Choose the least disruptive fix

Google’s guidance supports these distinctions but does not establish a universal percentage of battery saved by any one toggle. Your result depends on the model, battery health, signal, brightness, apps, and how you use the phone.

Apply routine software fixes
- Restart the phone.
- Open Settings → System → Software update (or search for System update) and install available Android updates.
- Open the app store, go to your account’s app-management area, and install pending app updates.
- Return to Battery usage after normal use and check whether the same app or system activity remains the outlier.
Menu names differ among manufacturers. Google’s general Android instructions are available at Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.
Check for an app-specific pattern
Ask whether the drain started immediately after installing or updating one app, enabling a new account sync, using a new accessory, or changing network coverage. Temporarily pause a nonessential app’s background activity, then observe the battery report during comparable use. Do not remove or restrict security, accessibility, communication, or device-management software unless you understand the effect.

Android can manage apps you have not used recently. Review Settings → Apps and the unused-app or app-battery controls available on your model. Google describes the feature at Manage unused apps on your Android device. Automatic handling can remove permissions or pause background activity, so check the app’s behavior before relying on it for time-sensitive alerts.

When settings are not enough
If restarting, updating, and targeted changes do not improve the pattern, contact the phone manufacturer or carrier with the model, Android version, when the drain began, and screenshots of Battery usage. Their instructions are the authority for controls that are absent or named differently on your device. Persistent rapid discharge, unexpected shutdowns, swelling, unusual heat while idle, or charging problems can indicate hardware or battery damage; stop using a visibly swollen battery and seek authorized service rather than attempting a settings workaround.
Factory reset is a last resort
A factory reset removes installed apps and their associated data. It is not a routine battery-saving toggle and may not fix a failing battery or a network problem.
- Back up photos, messages, contacts, authenticator data, and files you cannot replace.
- Confirm that you know the Google account and screen-lock credentials needed after the reset.
- Use your manufacturer’s documented reset path, usually under Settings → System → Reset options.
- After the reset, install updates first and add apps gradually so you can identify a problematic app instead of restoring every change at once.
On a Pixel, allow Adaptive Battery time to learn after the reset; Google says that process can take a few weeks. Do not reset solely because battery percentages in the usage screen do not total exactly 100 percent—rounded reporting explains that display.

- Restricting every app: this can delay messages, backups, reminders, and security checks while providing little benefit for apps that were not draining power.
- Force-stopping system components: essential services may restart repeatedly or cause missing functions.
- Leaving Battery Saver on permanently without checking effects: delayed synchronization can look like a broken app or missed alert.
- Turning off location or connectivity indiscriminately: navigation, wearables, finding features, calls, and smart-home functions may stop.
- Expecting a fixed savings percentage: Google provides no universal figure because workload and hardware vary.
- Judging immediately after an update or reset: Pixel guidance allows for several days of extra post-update drain and weeks for optimization after setup or reset.
A quick, safe sequence to follow
- Check Battery usage and identify whether the outlier is an app, screen, network, location, or system activity.
- For an app outlier, inspect Allow background usage and choose a targeted restriction only if delayed work is acceptable.
- For screen use, lower brightness, enable adaptive brightness, shorten timeout, and optionally use Dark theme.
- Stop hotspot, streaming, navigation, Bluetooth, or location access when the related task is finished.
- Use Battery Saver when you need temporary runtime and can accept reduced background behavior.
- Leave Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled, especially on Pixel, and allow time after setup, reset, or updates.
- Restart, update Android and apps, then contact the carrier or manufacturer if the same drain persists.
This sequence preserves the functions you still need while narrowing the cause instead of disabling Android features blindly.
