Start with the electric utility serving your address, then use that utility’s official outage-alert page, account portal, outage map, app, or text-registration method. Have the requested account or service identifier ready, select the channels you will notice, complete phone or email verification, and review how to manage or cancel alerts. Enrollment rules, alert types, short codes, and account requirements vary by utility and can change, so confirm the instructions on the provider’s current official page before signing up.

This guide explains how to identify the right provider, choose the best enrollment route, complete signup, and handle renters, multiple recipients, moves, medical needs, fees, and common delivery problems. The examples are from utilities in the United States and Canada; your local provider’s rules control.

1. Identify the utility serving the address

Outage notifications are tied to a specific electric utility and often to a particular service address. A neighboring home, apartment building, or business may have a different provider, even if it is in the same city. Do not enroll through a generic third-party form or assume that a familiar utility serves every address in your area.

Check the electricity bill or service paperwork

The company name, customer-service number, and account number on the electricity bill are the most reliable starting points. A landlord, property manager, or previous owner can give you a name, but confirm it against a current bill or the meter serving the property. If electricity is included in rent and you do not receive a bill, ask the property manager which utility owns the account for the address.

Search the provider’s official website

Use the utility name plus one of these terms: outage alerts, outage notifications, or outage center. Prefer a result that leads to the utility’s own domain and explains account access, alert channels, verification, and opt-out procedures. Check the service territory or address lookup if the site provides one.

Confirm the service address before enrolling

Many utilities associate an alert with a meter, premise, or account rather than merely with a postal ZIP code. Enter the complete street address, apartment or unit information when requested, and the correct account or meter identifier. If the provider’s map shows several nearby outages, select the icon or address that matches your property.

2. Choose an enrollment route

Utilities commonly offer more than one path, but the routes do not necessarily cover the same alerts. A map subscription may be temporary, while an account preference can remain associated with a service address. Compare the route’s access requirement, address coverage, alert lifecycle, and management options before choosing.

Enrollment route What you usually need Strengths Important limitation to check
Account portal Online login and an account or service address Often supports several channels and categories, such as outage detection, restoration estimates, updates, and restored notices Some utilities restrict settings to the account holder or require the account to be linked to the current address
Outage-map signup An address or an outage selected on the map, plus a phone number or email May work without creating an online account The subscription may end when that outage is restored; a new signup can be required for a later outage
Text registration A utility-specific short code, keyword, and sometimes an account number Fast delivery to a phone you carry Short codes and commands are regional; messaging or data charges may apply; each recipient may need to confirm
Mobile app The utility’s app and an account or service address Can combine push notifications, outage maps, and account controls Push permissions, app sign-in, and background-notification settings must remain enabled
Address-based safety alerts The address and a contact method; an account may not be required Useful for tenants, caregivers, travelers, or service providers who do not hold the utility account Availability and alert scope are specific to the utility and may cover only public-safety shutoffs

3. Complete signup safely

  1. Open the official alert page. From the utility’s verified website, choose the link labeled Outage Alerts, Notifications, Outage Center, My Account, or a similarly named option. Do not enter account details on a page whose domain you cannot verify.
  2. Select the route that matches your situation. Choose account preferences if you want ongoing service-address notifications, an outage map if you need a one-time update without an account, text registration for rapid phone messages, or an app if you want push notifications and map access together.
  3. Prepare the requested identifier. Utilities may ask for an account number, ZIP code, meter number, service address, or a combination. Enter only the information requested on the official form. Examples include an account number and ZIP code for Con Edison text registration, a 10-digit account number for National Grid in Massachusetts, and an electric meter number when linking a CenterPoint account.
  4. Choose every channel you will actually monitor. Depending on the provider, choices can include text, email, voice calls, app notifications, or more than one. A second channel can help if cellular service is congested, but it can also produce duplicate messages.
  5. Review alert categories. Look for separate controls for outage detected, restoration estimate, restoration updates, restored service, planned work, and public-safety events. A utility may offer one category without offering the others.
  6. Verify each contact method. Follow the confirmation link in an email, enter a verification code, or reply to a confirmation text as instructed. A contact that has not completed verification may not receive alerts.
  7. Check the saved address and preferences. Reopen the profile or confirmation screen and verify the service address, phone number, email address, language if offered, and selected categories. Keep these details current when you change phone numbers, email accounts, or homes.
  8. Record the management instructions. Save the utility’s settings path and any stated stop or unsubscribe command. Do not reply with a guessed keyword; use the exact process shown by the provider.

4. Official utility examples

The following procedures were published by the named utilities and illustrate how different enrollment systems work. They are examples, not universal commands. Confirm that the utility still displays the same code and eligibility rules before sending a text.

Con Edison

Text REG to 688-243 and follow the prompts. Keep the account number and ZIP code available. After registration, OUT reports a power problem and STATUS checks its status. The STOP command cancels the text service. Con Edison notes that message and data rates may apply.

National Grid in Massachusetts

For email or phone alerts, sign in to the account and set notification preferences. For text alerts, text REG to 64743 and have the 10-digit account number ready. The service describes outage detection, restoration estimates and updates, and restored notices. Text registration can incur message or data charges, and STOP is the stated cancellation command.

Southern California Edison

In My Account, open Settings, choose Alerts & Notifications, and enable Emergency Alerts and Repair and Maintenance Alerts as appropriate. Southern California Edison also lists address-based public-safety power-shutoff alerts for people who do not have an SCE service account. Those alerts can use email, text, or voice and may help residential or commercial tenants, caregivers, frequent travelers, and service providers.

PG&E

Account holders can set outage preferences in My Account. The outage-map route lets you search for an address or select an outage icon, request updates, and enter a phone number or email without creating an online account. This map subscription is tied to the displayed outage: when service is restored, alerts stop, and you must sign up again for a future outage, even at the same address.

Hydro One

Hydro One offers three routes: enroll through myAccount, text register to 92887 (the service identifies this as WATTS), or use the app at Outage Map → Menu → Get Outage Alerts. Depending on availability, messages can include outage information, updates, the cause or affected area, an estimated restoration time, and a restoration notice. Text or email messaging may incur carrier charges.

CenterPoint Power Alert Service

Link the electric account in My Account, using the meter number if the linking screen requests it, then choose Manage or Sign up for Power Alert Service. The service supports text messages, emails, and phone calls, with up to five text contacts, five email contacts, and five phone contacts per electric account. Every text recipient must reply to the confirmation message before receiving alerts.

Toronto Hydro

Sign in to the self-serve portal, select Outage notifications from Account Summary, enter a mobile number, an email address, or both, and save the settings. Keep the profile contact details current so later notices reach the people who need them.

5. Match the setup to your circumstances

You rent, provide care, or do not hold the account

First look for an address-based route rather than assuming an account-holder login is mandatory. Southern California Edison’s public-safety power-shutoff address alerts explicitly accommodate some people without an SCE service account. PG&E’s outage-map signup also accepts an address and contact method without an online account, although its subscription ends when that particular outage is restored. Other utilities may limit enrollment to the account holder, so check the local eligibility statement.

You have no online account

Try the utility’s text-registration method or outage map. A map-based form can provide updates for an outage already displayed at the address without requiring portal credentials. If the provider offers only account preferences, contact customer service using the number on a bill and ask whether a text, voice, or address-based alternative exists.

Several people need notifications

Look for an additional-contact or contact-management setting. CenterPoint, for example, permits up to five contacts in each of its text, email, and phone categories, but every text recipient must confirm separately. For other utilities, determine whether adding a person changes the account holder’s permissions or exposes billing information. Give each recipient the exact confirmation instructions and an explanation of which alerts they will receive.

You moved recently

Update the service address before relying on alerts. CenterPoint states that notifications stop for the old address when electric service is disconnected and directs customers to link the account at the new address. A portal profile, app, or map subscription can retain an old premise even after your mailing address changes, so remove the old entry and verify the new meter or account.

Someone relies on electricity for medical equipment

Ordinary outage notifications are not an emergency-response service and should not be your only protection. Read the utility’s separate emergency and public-safety instructions and ask about specialized customer programs. PG&E, for instance, describes separate public-safety power-shutoff notifications and directs customers who depend on electricity for medical needs to its Medical Baseline information. Maintain an appropriate backup-power and emergency plan according to medical guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

6. Understand what an alert can and cannot tell you

Outage detection

A detection message generally means the utility’s system has associated an interruption with your account, meter, or selected map location. It may arrive after the outage begins, and a utility may not detect every local condition immediately.

Estimated restoration

An estimated restoration time is a changing operational forecast, not a guarantee. Utilities may send an initial estimate, later revisions, and a final restored notice. The estimate can disappear or change when crews identify additional damage, safety hazards, weather effects, or access problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Planned work and public-safety events

Planned maintenance and emergency shutoff notices are often controlled separately from ordinary outage alerts. Turn on the relevant category if you need advance warning, and read the provider’s description of the geographic area and lead time. Do not infer that a subscription for unplanned outages includes every planned-work notice.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Address and outage lifecycles

Some services follow the service address continuously; others follow only an outage record. The PG&E map route is an explicit example of the second model: alerts stop after restoration and require a new signup for a later outage. Ask whether your route is persistent before assuming that one enrollment covers future events.

7. Fees, privacy, and account security

Messaging charges

Con Edison, National Grid, Hydro One, and CenterPoint warn that carrier message or data rates may apply; Consumers Energy gives the same warning. These are charges from your mobile provider, not necessarily a fee from the utility. Review your wireless plan, especially if you use a pay-as-you-go number or are traveling internationally.

Use official contact details

Utilities will not need your banking password to enroll outage alerts. Type the provider’s web address yourself or use a saved official bookmark, check for secure account sign-in, and treat unsolicited texts that demand payment or a password as suspicious. If a message links to a login page, open the utility site independently rather than following the link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limit access to what recipients need

An alert contact may see outage information for the service address but should not automatically receive billing or account-management access. Use a notification-only option when available, and remove former tenants, caregivers, contractors, or household members when their role ends.

8. Troubleshoot missing or incorrect alerts

No confirmation arrived

  • Check spam, junk, promotions, and blocked-message folders.
  • Confirm that the phone number includes the correct country and area code and that the email address has no typing error.
  • Look for a pending verification banner in the utility portal.
  • If a text recipient was asked to reply, send the exact confirmation response from the same number.

Alerts reference the wrong address

  • Sign in and inspect linked premises, meters, and service addresses.
  • Remove an old address and add the current one using the utility’s account or meter identifier.
  • If you are a renter or shared-meter customer, ask the utility whether address-based alerts are available for your occupancy type.

You receive duplicate or excessive messages

  • Check whether both an account subscription and a map subscription are active.
  • Review whether the same phone or email is enrolled under multiple service addresses.
  • Keep the channel you monitor best and disable overlapping categories or duplicate contacts.

An outage is missing from the notifications

  • Open the utility’s outage map directly and search the exact address.
  • Confirm that the map route has not expired after a previous outage was restored.
  • Check whether the event is planned maintenance, a public-safety shutoff, or a localized problem covered by a different alert category.
  • Report a dangerous downed line or other immediate hazard through the utility’s emergency process; do not wait for an automated alert.

You changed phone numbers or email addresses

Update every active route: account preferences, app profile, map subscription, and additional-contact list. A new address in the billing profile does not necessarily update a separately enrolled map or text service.

9. A quick verification checklist

  • The provider is the electric utility serving the exact address.
  • The signup page or app is operated by that utility.
  • The selected route is appropriate for your account status: account holder, tenant, caregiver, or visitor.
  • The requested account, meter, ZIP code, or address information matches the service.
  • The chosen channels are enabled on your phone, email account, or app.
  • Every required email link, code, or text confirmation has been completed.
  • Alert categories include the events you care about, such as detection, restoration estimates, planned work, or safety shutoffs.
  • You understand whether the enrollment persists or ends after one outage.
  • You know the utility’s stated management or opt-out method and any carrier charges.
  • Contact details and service addresses are updated after a move or personnel change.

Once these checks are complete, test the account or notification settings from the utility’s own status page rather than sending unverified commands. Keep the official outage-map address and customer-service number accessible in case a real interruption occurs.
