For a Minecraft server running version 1.7 or later, the live log is logs/latest.log inside the server’s root folder. Open the server’s file manager, FTP/SFTP connection, or local directory, then open logs. Older sessions are stored there as compressed YYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gz files. If the server crashed, also collect the matching file from crash-reports/.
To get useful help, share the complete relevant log rather than only its last few lines. Upload it to a paste service such as mclo.gs, remove IP addresses and tokens first, and send the resulting link. The sections below show exactly which file to choose, how to download it from each type of setup, and what to do when the expected file is missing.

The Minecraft server log locations at a glance
The right file depends on whether you need the current session, an earlier session, or details from a crash.

The paths above are relative to the server root: the directory containing the server JAR and other server files. A control panel may hide that root behind a “Files” view, while a local installation shows it as an ordinary folder on the computer running the server.

Find latest.log in a hosting control panel
Most game-server panels expose the installation directory through a file manager. Labels differ, but the route is usually the same.
- Sign in to the panel for the Minecraft server.
- Open Files, File Manager, or the panel’s equivalent.
- Open the server’s root directory. If you see the server JAR, configuration files, and world folders, you are in the right place.
- Open the
logsfolder. - Select
latest.logand choose Download, Download file, or the equivalent action.
Some panels provide a download control directly on the console page. That shortcut normally downloads the same current log, but use the file manager when you need an older .log.gz file or a crash report.
If the panel has separate instances
Check that you opened the files for the affected server instance, not a proxy, test server, or another world. Each instance has its own root and its own logs directory. A perfectly normal latest.log from the wrong instance will not explain the problem you are trying to diagnose.
Download while the server is running
latest.log is written while the server runs. Downloading it does not require stopping the server. For a problem that is happening now, wait until the error appears, then download the file so the relevant entries have been written. If you need a stable record of the entire session, stop the server normally and download the completed file afterward; do not delete or rename the live file while the process is still writing to it.
Find the log through FTP or SFTP
FTP and SFTP clients show the same server files as a panel, but you must connect to the correct account and directory first.

- Open your FTP or SFTP client and connect with the host, port, username, and authentication details supplied for the server.
- Browse to the Minecraft server’s root directory. On some hosts this is the initial directory; on others you must open a named server or instance folder.
- Open
logs. - Download
latest.log, or select the dated.log.gzfile that matches the incident. - If the server crashed, go back to the root and download the relevant file from
crash-reportsas well.
If logs is not visible, verify that the client is showing hidden files only if your host uses a hidden parent directory, and confirm that you are connected to the game server account rather than a web-hosting directory. Do not assume that a web server’s access log is the Minecraft log.
Find the log on a local Minecraft server
On a server you run on your own computer or a machine you administer, open the folder from which the Minecraft server is launched. The exact location depends on where you placed the files; there is no single operating-system path.
- Locate the server root—the folder containing the server JAR and the world and configuration folders.
- Open
logs. - Open or copy
latest.logfor the current or most recent session. - For an earlier session, copy the appropriate
YYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gzarchive. - After a crash, open
crash-reportsand copy the report whose timestamp matches the failure.
Use a copy when inspecting or editing a file. Keep the original in place so you do not alter evidence that may be needed if the server must be restarted or investigated again.
Choose the correct file for the problem
A problem happening right now
Use logs/latest.log. It includes startup messages, player joins, warnings, errors, and shutdown information for the current session. If the server is still running, reproduce the problem once, note the approximate time, and then download the file.
A problem from a previous restart
Use the dated archive in logs. The filename follows YYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gz: the date identifies the day and N distinguishes multiple sessions on that date. Pick the archive covering the restart or error instead of automatically sending only today’s latest.log.

A crash or forced termination
Send both the matching log archive and the crash report when they exist. The log provides the surrounding timeline; the report records the crash details in a separate format. The crash-reports folder is created only after a crash report has been generated, so its absence does not by itself prove that no problem occurred.
Open a compressed .log.gz archive
Previous sessions are gzip-compressed to save space. They are not ordinary text files, so a text editor may refuse to open them or display unreadable data.
- Download the
.log.gzfile to your computer. - Right-click it and choose the extraction option in 7-Zip, WinRAR, or another gzip-capable archive tool.
- Extract it to a new folder so the original archive remains unchanged.
- Open the extracted
.logfile in a text editor that can handle large files.
If extraction reports a damaged archive, download it again in binary mode through the FTP/SFTP client or panel. Do not paste the compressed bytes into a browser form; extract the file first and share the resulting text.
Share a Minecraft server log safely
Helpers generally need the complete relevant file. A short excerpt—such as only the last ten lines—can omit the first error, the startup configuration, or the event that triggered a later cascade of messages.

latest.log, the selected.log.gzarchive after extraction, and any matching crash report into a separate folder. - Inspect for secrets. Search the copy for public or private IP addresses, authentication tokens, access keys, webhook URLs, passwords, and other values that should not be public.
- Remove sensitive values without deleting the surrounding line. Replace a secret with a marker such as
[redacted]so readers can still understand which setting or event produced the message. - Upload the complete text. mclo.gs is commonly used for Minecraft logs and is designed for sharing long text through a link.
- Send the link with context. State the Minecraft version if known, what you expected, what happened instead, and the approximate time of the failure.
- Include related files. Add the matching earlier-session archive and crash report when the incident did not occur in the current run.
What not to remove
Do not delete every line containing an IP address or username if doing so destroys the event sequence. Redact only the sensitive value and leave timestamps, log levels, exception names, stack traces, and nearby lines intact. Those details often show whether the failure began during startup, a player connection, world loading, a plugin or mod operation, or shutdown.

Why a complete log matters
Many visible errors are secondary symptoms. A missing dependency, failed network connection, or configuration error near the beginning can cause dozens of later warnings. A complete session lets a helper identify the first relevant failure and compare it with the server’s normal startup sequence.
What to send when a server crashed
A crash report and a server log answer different questions. The report is the focused record of the crash; the log shows what the server was doing before and after it.
- For a crash in the current session, send
logs/latest.logplus the newest file incrash-reports. - For a crash that occurred before a restart, send the dated
.log.gzarchive covering that session, extracted, plus the crash report with the matching timestamp. - If there is no crash report, say so. The server may have been forcibly terminated, the process may have run out of memory, or the report may not have been written before the machine stopped.
Keep filenames and timestamps when uploading multiple files. They allow someone helping you to match the report to the correct session rather than mixing evidence from separate restarts.
Troubleshoot a missing latest.log
The logs folder is empty
Confirm that the server has been started at least once and that you opened the correct instance root. A newly created directory or an unrelated proxy folder may not contain Minecraft server logs. If the server is running, refresh the panel or reconnect the FTP/SFTP client before checking again.
You see server.log but no latest.log
Check the server version. Minecraft 1.6.4 and earlier used a root-level server.log. For 1.7 and later, the expected current path is logs/latest.log. If a newer installation still uses a different layout, confirm the version and the panel’s instance path before moving or renaming files.

The panel console shows messages but the file is not downloadable
Use the file manager or an FTP/SFTP connection instead of the console download shortcut. Ensure your account has read permission for the server files. If the panel is displaying a different instance, switch to the server that produced the console output and look for its own logs directory.
The log stops before the failure
Download it again after reproducing the issue, and check whether the process was terminated abruptly. A hard power loss or forced process kill can prevent the final lines from being written. In that case, use the preceding dated archive and any crash report, system record, or panel output that exists.

Do not remove the beginning automatically. Use a large-file-capable text editor, or make a copy and extract only the time range surrounding the failure while retaining enough startup context for diagnosis. When uploading, use a paste service that accepts the full text; if it imposes a size limit, explain exactly which portions were omitted and provide the original file through the host’s permitted download method.
Read enough of the log to describe the issue
You do not need to understand every line before sharing it, but a few observations make a report much more useful.
- Record the server version and whether it is vanilla, modded, or running plugins, if you know that information.
- Note the first time the warning or error appears, not just the final repeated message.
- Copy the complete exception and stack trace instead of a single sentence from it.
- Describe the action that preceded it: startup, joining, teleporting, loading a chunk, saving, changing a setting, or stopping the server.
- State whether the process remained online, restarted, froze, or exited.
These details belong beside the paste link, not as a replacement for the file. They provide the timeline that a raw log cannot infer reliably.
Privacy checklist before publishing
- Remove server IP addresses if exposing them would create a security or privacy concern.
- Remove authentication tokens, API keys, webhook URLs, passwords, and other credentials.
- Check command output and plugin or mod configuration lines for private paths, email addresses, or player-identifying information.
- Preserve timestamps, error text, stack traces, and the order of events.
- After publishing, treat any accidentally exposed credential as compromised and rotate it immediately.
Redaction is a balance: protect secrets, but leave enough structure for another person to reproduce the reasoning from the log.

A complete sharing checklist
- Identify whether the issue belongs to the current session or an earlier one.
- Download
logs/latest.logfor the current session, or select the matchingYYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gzarchive for an earlier session. - Extract any
.log.gzarchive with 7-Zip or WinRAR. - Collect the matching file from
crash-reportsif the server crashed. - Make copies and redact IP addresses and tokens from those copies.
- Upload the complete readable log to a paste service such as mclo.gs.
- Share the paste link with the server version, symptoms, timing, and the action that triggered the issue.
Following this sequence gives a helper the current evidence, the correct historical session when necessary, and enough context to locate the first meaningful failure without exposing credentials.
Version and path caveat
The logs/latest.log and compressed archive layout applies to Minecraft server versions 1.7 and later as described above. Versions 1.6.4 and earlier used server.log in the server root. Minecraft distributions, wrappers, and hosting panels can present files differently, so if your installation does not match either layout, verify the server version and instance root first. Do not move files merely to force a familiar path; the location shown by the running server’s own file structure is the one to use.
