Start with Apple’s Find My service before buying anything. On an iPhone or iPad, open Find My, tap Devices, choose your AirPods, and use the map, Play Sound, or Find Nearby when those controls are available. If the missing earbud or case cannot be recovered, Apple supports purchasing a replacement, but you must match the exact AirPods 4 model and charging-case version.
This guide explains the recovery steps, what “Offline” means, the model-specific Lost option, how to order a replacement through Apple’s regional support process, and how to pair replacement AirPods 4 without triggering a mismatch warning.
Choose recovery or replacement first
There are two practical routes: recover the original component with Find My, or purchase a replacement when the component remains missing. Recovery is worthwhile when Find My shows a current or useful location and offers a sound or nearby-finding control. Replacement is the dependable route when the item is permanently lost, damaged, or no longer comes online.

Apple Support’s current guidance says that if you still cannot find your AirPods, “you can buy a replacement.” The support hub similarly says a missing AirPod or charging case can be replaced. Those statements establish availability, not a single worldwide price or a guaranteed delivery time.

Find a lost AirPods 4 component with Find My
1. Open the AirPods entry
- Open the Find My app on an iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap your AirPods in the device list.
- If the earbuds are separated and Find My offers separate controls, select the missing Left or Right earbud.
The entry may represent the earbuds, the charging case, or the last component that reported a location. When the two earbuds are apart, selecting the side you need prevents you from searching for the wrong piece.
2. Read the map before moving
Use the displayed map to decide whether the component is probably nearby or somewhere else. A current location gives you a starting point for a physical search. If the map shows a place you cannot immediately reach, tap Get Directions to open that location in Maps.
Do not assume a pin proves the component is still there. A location can be the last one reported before the AirPod went out of range, ran out of charge, or lost its connection. Treat an older point as a lead and verify it on site.

3. Play a sound when the control is available
If the AirPod or case is close enough and online, tap Play Sound. Listen for the beeps while checking common hiding places such as pockets, bags, sofa cushions, bedding, car seats, and the area around a charging cable. Move slowly and pause between sounds; a quiet room makes the signal easier to hear.

Find My cannot make an offline component play a sound. If the control is missing or fails, return to the status shown in the app rather than repeatedly tapping it.
4. Use Find Nearby when offered
Depending on the AirPods and iPhone model, Find My may show Find Nearby. Follow the on-screen direction and distance cues while walking slowly. Keep the phone pointed toward the indicated area and check the floor, furniture edges, coat linings, and other places where a small earbud or case can stop out of sight.
Find Nearby is not guaranteed for every state of every component. It may disappear when the item is offline, out of range, or unable to communicate.

An Offline or No location found message does not prove the AirPod is destroyed or permanently gone. It can mean that the component is out of Bluetooth range, needs charging, or has not recently communicated with the Find My network. Find My may retain and display its last known location, but Play Sound and Find Nearby generally cannot work until the component comes online.

Check the device entry again later. Find My may notify you if the AirPods come back online. If the last known location is a home, office, vehicle, or another place you control, search that location carefully before ordering a replacement.
What to do when you do not have an Apple device
Apple says Find My can also be accessed at iCloud.com/find without using the Find My app. The web experience can have fewer controls than the app, so a feature visible on an iPhone may not be available in the browser. The Find My network itself can also vary by country or region. If a map, sound, or nearby feature is absent, that may reflect the device state, browser limitations, or local availability rather than a definite loss.
Understand Lost marking for AirPods 4
Do not assume every AirPods 4 model has identical Lost controls. Apple’s current Find My instructions specifically list separate Lost marking for AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). The same instructions do not list standard AirPods 4 as having that per-component option.

When replacement is the sensible choice
Apple’s support pages direct owners who cannot find a missing earbud or charging case to a replacement process. Use the Apple Support flow for your country or region to obtain the current order route and quote. The amount is not universal: the searched UK repair guidance says estimates can depend on inspection, and authorised providers may set their own fees.
Confirm the component you actually need
- One earbud: order a replacement for the missing left or right side, not a complete new set unless that is the better value for your situation.
- Charging case: verify whether you need the case for standard AirPods 4 or the AirPods 4 with ANC variant. Case features and compatibility are model-specific.
- Both earbuds: if both are gone but the case remains, ask for the correct pair of replacement earbuds for your case generation.
- Complete replacement: compare the regional service quote with the price of a new, compatible set before committing.
Use a compatibility checklist before paying

The available sources do not establish a universal replacement price, a fixed inspection fee, or a verified marketplace inventory listing. Treat any advertised figure as specific to that seller, region, model, and date rather than as an industry-wide price.
Set up a replacement AirPods 4 earbud or case
Apple provides model-specific setup instructions for replacement AirPods 4 of all models and for a replacement charging case. The process includes a required charging period, so do not judge the replacement by an immediate pairing attempt.
- Put both AirPods in the charging case. If you replaced the case, place the original and replacement components in that compatible case as instructed for your model.
- Connect the case to power.
- Close the lid and leave the case charging for 20 minutes.
- Open the case and check the status light. Apple’s instructions use a flashing white light for the pairing stage.
- If the light is not flashing white, double-tap the front of the case at the stages described in Apple’s instructions until the light flashes amber and then white.
- Close the lid while the light is flashing white.
- Follow Apple’s remaining pairing prompts on the iPhone or other compatible device. Use the instructions for your exact AirPods 4 model and device software.
The 20-minute charge is part of the replacement setup, not an optional suggestion. If the case does not reach the required light state, repeat the documented double-tap sequence rather than improvising a different reset procedure.

Fix an AirPods Mismatch alert
An AirPods Mismatch alert means Find My or the pairing process sees a relationship problem among the components. Apple identifies several possible causes:
- The replacement and the remaining component are different generations.
- A component belongs to another person.
- A component is still associated with another Apple Account.
Resolve the generation problem
Stop setup and verify that the replacement is the same AirPods 4 generation and variant as the component you kept. A physically similar earbud or case is not sufficient evidence of compatibility. Confirm the model through Apple’s device information or the documentation supplied with the part.
Resolve a previous-owner association
If the component was purchased used or transferred from another person, ask that person to remove it from their Apple Account. Until that association is cleared, your own account may continue to report a mismatch even after the 20-minute charging step.
Run setup again after correcting the cause
Once the generations match and any prior account association is removed, repeat the case charging and light-status procedure. Keep both earbuds together in the case during the process and follow the current Apple instructions for the exact model. If the alert remains, use the regional Apple Support route or an authorised provider because the sources do not establish a universal self-service fix for every mismatch condition.

After you recover the original part
If Find My leads you to the missing earbud or case, inspect it before pairing. Remove visible debris, check for physical damage, and let a wet component dry according to Apple’s safety guidance before placing it in the case. - Open Find My and select the AirPods under Devices.

- Use Play Sound, Find Nearby, or Get Directions when each control is offered.
- If the item is Offline or shows No location found, search the last location and check again later.
- Use the Lost option only if it appears for your exact model; Apple specifically lists AirPods 4 with ANC, not standard AirPods 4, for separate component marking.
- If recovery fails, identify the exact earbud side or case variant before requesting a replacement.
- Obtain the current regional quote and review seller or authorised-provider terms.
- For setup, place both earbuds in the compatible case, connect power, close the lid, and charge for 20 minutes.
- If an AirPods Mismatch alert appears, check generation, ownership, and Apple Account association before repeating setup.
Find My is the only way to determine whether the missing component can still report a useful location. Replacement is the fallback when the component remains unavailable, but compatibility and account status matter as much as the physical fit. Following those checks avoids buying the wrong case or earbud and gives a replacement the best chance of pairing normally.
