Short answer: Windows services can consume RAM, CPU, disk I/O, and network capacity, but deleting services is rarely an effective way to reclaim disk space. Use Windows storage tools first. Then use services.msc, Task Manager, and the owning app’s settings to identify third-party services that run without a feature you need. Test by stopping a service, check dependencies, and prefer Manual or Trigger Start over Disabled when on-demand use is possible.
What a Windows service is—and what changing one can accomplish
A service is a background Windows component that can start with the operating system or when a particular feature requests it. Services support functions such as printing, audio, search, updates, security, networking, device controls, backups, cloud synchronization, VPN connections, and application launchers. Some are supplied by Microsoft; others are installed with hardware drivers or third-party software.

Stopping a service that you do not need can reduce that activity while it is stopped. The amount varies with the service, its workload, and what it was doing; Microsoft does not publish a universal RAM-saving figure for service changes.
Services are different from files. Removing a service entry or stopping its process normally does not remove the application’s program files, cached data, installers, logs, or downloads. Meaningful disk recovery usually comes from temporary files, system files, Recycle Bin contents, unused applications, large personal files, downloads, and locally cached cloud files. Windows’ built-in storage tools address those categories directly.

Make a reversible baseline before changing anything
Service changes can affect sign-in, networking, audio, printing, search, updates, security, storage, or device controls. Prepare a way back before making broad changes.
- Record the current state. For each candidate, note its service name, display name, startup type, current status, publisher, executable path, and the feature or application that appears to use it. A screenshot of the Properties window is sufficient.
- Create a recovery point. Create a Windows restore point, or use another recovery method available on your edition and organization-managed device. A restore point is useful if several changes interact or Windows becomes difficult to use.
- Change one related item at a time. If you stop or alter several services together, you cannot tell which change caused a failure or restore the smallest necessary setting.
Service availability and dependencies differ by Windows edition, hardware, installed applications, and organizational policy. A setting that is harmless on one PC may be required on another.
Find services that are candidates for review
Open the Services console
- Press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. You can also search for Services from the Start menu. - Sort or scan the list and open a service’s Properties window. The display name, service name, status, startup type, description, and Log On information are shown there.
- Read the description before making a decision. It often identifies the application or Windows feature that depends on the service.
Do not treat every service set to Automatic as unnecessary. Automatic startup can be required for a feature that you use at sign-in, while a service set to Manual may activate only when requested.
Identify the owner and executable
Look for the publisher and executable path in the Properties dialog or in the associated program’s installation details. Match the service to software you intentionally installed, such as a printer utility, VPN client, backup program, game launcher, cloud client, hardware utility, or other application. If you still cannot identify it, leave it unchanged until you can establish what feature it supports.
A third-party service that belongs to software you no longer use is usually an application-removal problem, not a service-tuning problem. Uninstall the owning program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the wording can vary by Windows release) instead of deleting registry entries, service records, or executable files manually.

Check dependencies before touching the setting
Select the Dependencies tab in the service’s Properties window. Windows lists services that this service requires and services that require it. Microsoft warns that disabling a service can prevent dependent services from starting. Follow the chain far enough to understand which feature could be affected, and consider dependencies installed by another application as well as Microsoft components.

Confirm that the activity is real
Use Task Manager alongside the Services console. Look for sustained background CPU, memory, disk, or network activity rather than a brief spike during startup, an update, a backup, or a synchronization job. A service that is idle most of the time is unlikely to be the cause of a general slowdown, even if it is present in the list.
Stop first, disable only after testing
Stopping a service is a temporary test; changing its startup type determines what happens after reboot or when Windows requests it. Use this sequence for each candidate:
- In
services.msc, open the service’s Properties and note the original startup type. - Choose Stop and wait for the status to change. If Stop is unavailable, do not force termination through registry edits or file deletion.
- Use the feature that matters: connect to the network or VPN, print a test page, play audio, search files, sign in, synchronize a cloud folder, run a backup, launch the related game, or use the hardware control.
- Watch Task Manager and the affected feature for enough time to expose an error. Check networking, audio, printing, search, updates, security, storage, sign-in, and device controls when the service could plausibly affect them.
- If anything fails, return to Properties and click Start. Restore the original startup type and confirm the feature works after a restart if the change had been persistent.
Do not use this workflow to experiment casually with core security, update, licensing, storage, or networking components. Microsoft does not provide a single safe disable list because the correct setting depends on the computer’s hardware, edition, installed programs, and policy.
Choose a startup setting that matches how you use the feature
The exact startup choices vary by Windows release and installed software. Use the least restrictive option that solves the problem.

Do not disable Windows Search, SysMain, Windows Update, Defender, Bluetooth, printing, networking, licensing, storage, or vendor services merely because a list on the internet labels them “safe.” Their necessity is workload-specific, and disabling security or update components can increase risk as well as break features.
Remove the software that installed an unwanted service
If a service belongs to an application you no longer use, remove the application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. This approach can remove the service, scheduled tasks, files, and configuration that the program owns. Before uninstalling, export or copy any data the application stores locally, and check whether another program depends on it.
Do not delete a service’s registry key, rename its executable, or remove files from System32 or an application directory to make it disappear. Those actions can leave broken startup entries, prevent clean reinstallation, and make recovery harder.
Review startup apps separately
Services are only one source of background activity. Microsoft identifies excessive startup and background applications as a separate performance cause. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and review the entries’ startup impact, publisher, and purpose. Disable an entry only when you recognize it and do not need it at sign-in; an app can still be launched manually later.
For a broader application-level review, use Settings > Apps > Startup where available. Keep security, input, accessibility, backup, and device-control software enabled when you rely on those functions. If a startup entry belongs to software you no longer use, uninstalling that software is cleaner than repeatedly suppressing its launcher.

Free disk space with Windows’ built-in tools
Storage Sense
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Storage Sense and turn it on or configure its schedule.
- Review the temporary-file and Recycle Bin options before applying them.
Microsoft describes Storage Sense as a feature that can automatically remove unnecessary files such as temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. It operates on the system drive and can be scheduled. If you use cloud storage, it can make inactive locally cached content online-only while keeping it available online; files marked Always keep on this device are exempt. Confirm that you can access an online-only file before relying on it offline.
Cleanup recommendations
- Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Review each category rather than selecting everything automatically: temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced content, and unused apps.
- Windows shows the space each selection would save. Remove only items you recognize and no longer need.
This screen is useful when the immediate goal is disk capacity, because it presents candidates and an estimated saving before cleanup.
Disk Cleanup
- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Choose the drive to examine, normally the system drive.
- Review the categories and their descriptions. Select Clean up system files when you need to evaluate system-level categories, then review the list again before confirming.
Microsoft describes Disk Cleanup as designed to free as much space as possible while reducing accidental deletion of essential files. Read any warning about rollback or installation files before removing a category.

Use the supported command-line entry point
Microsoft documents cleanmgr as a command for clearing unnecessary files from a hard disk. Running cleanmgr opens the same cleanup utility; review its categories in the graphical interface rather than assuming every category is disposable.
Handle WinSxS cautiously
The WinSxS component store contains Windows component versions used for servicing and recovery. Do not manually delete files inside the WinSxS folder. Use Microsoft’s supported component-cleanup task or commands, and understand that some cleanup can remove the ability to roll back an update or component change. If you are unsure which rollback options you may need, leave this category alone and use temporary-file, Recycle Bin, app, and personal-file cleanup first.

What results should you expect?
RAM and processor activity
Stopping an unneeded third-party service can reduce its current memory, CPU, disk-I/O, or network use. The result may be negligible if the service was idle, and it can change when the associated application performs work. There is no authoritative universal percentage or average RAM saving to expect.
Disk capacity
Changing a startup type does not normally remove program files or caches, so it should not be your primary disk-cleanup method. To recover capacity, target the categories shown by Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, Disk Cleanup, and your own large or unused files. Uninstall software that you no longer need and review locally cached cloud content separately from online-only files.

Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, hardware limits, and malware as separate reasons a Windows device may run slowly. If storage cleanup and startup review do not explain the problem, check those other causes rather than disabling increasingly important services.
A four-part decision test for every service
Before changing a startup type, score the candidate on these four questions:
- Feature impact: What exact function stops working if the service is unavailable?
- Security and update impact: Could the change delay protection, updates, licensing checks, or recovery?
- Resource benefit: Does Task Manager show sustained activity attributable to this service, or only a momentary event?
- Reversibility: Can you restore the original setting and recover the feature without reinstalling Windows?
A service is a reasonable optimization candidate only when its owner and purpose are known, the required feature is not used, dependencies are understood, measurable activity exists, and the change is easy to undo. Otherwise, leave it at its current setting and investigate the application or storage category that is actually responsible.
Recover when a change causes problems
- Open
services.mscand return the service to the startup type you recorded. - Click Start if it is stopped, then test the affected feature.
- Restart Windows if the service or its dependent components do not recover immediately.
- Use the restore point or other recovery option created before the changes if multiple services were altered or Windows remains unstable.
- Uninstall the owning application only after confirming that its data and any dependent feature are no longer needed.
If a device is managed by an employer or school, policy may restore service settings or prohibit changes. In that case, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly overriding the configuration.
