The fastest way to reduce mosquitoes around a home is to remove their water. Once a week, walk the entire property—including garages and other indoor areas—empty every container that holds water, scrub its sides, and then turn it over, cover it, or discard it. Keep necessary water containers tightly covered. If water cannot be removed or covered, use a label-approved larvicide only when the water is not for drinking. Persistent, extensive, or public sites belong with your local mosquito-control program.
Why standing water matters
Mosquito larvae and pupae live in standing water. They do not need a pond: a small amount left in a flowerpot saucer, toy, blocked gutter, or discarded container can provide habitat. Removing, dumping, or appropriately treating that water interrupts the immature stages before adult mosquitoes emerge.
This is called source reduction. It is different from spraying adult mosquitoes. Adulticide treatments target flying adults; they do not remove the water in which larvae and pupae develop. A household source-reduction routine therefore starts with finding water, not with choosing a spray.

Make a weekly mosquito-water sweep
Inspect at least once a week. A weekly interval catches newly collected water and makes it easier to remember which items need permanent changes. Walk the whole property rather than checking only the backyard: mosquitoes can breed in a shaded side passage, a garage, or an indoor plant tray.
- Start indoors. Check garages, sheds, basements, utility rooms, laundry areas, bathrooms, and rooms with plants or stored containers. Look under shelving and behind appliances for buckets, trays, vases, pet-water spillage, or leaks that leave a pool.
- Work around the exterior. Follow the foundation, patios, decks, driveways, side yards, play areas, storage zones, and fence lines. Inspect both sunny and shaded places; shade can make water harder to notice.
- Look inside objects, not just at the ground. Lift toys, planters, lids, tarps, and equipment that can trap water. Check the underside of pool covers and the folds of outdoor furniture covers.
- Mark recurring sites. If the same place collects water each week, note why: a low spot, clogged gutter, leaking hose connection, sagging cover, or container that cannot drain. Correcting the cause is more reliable than repeatedly dumping water.
- Finish with a second look after rain. Rain can refill containers after your regular round. A quick check after a storm is useful, but it does not replace the weekly inspection.
CDC summarizes the routine as: “Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out any items that hold water like tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, or trash containers.” Scrubbing is important because eggs can remain attached to container walls even after the water is poured out.
Where to look: a room-by-room and yard checklist
| Place or object | What to check | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Tires | Water inside stacked, mounted, or discarded tires | Remove the water, store tires under cover, or arrange proper disposal; prevent them from being left where rain can collect. |
| Buckets and tubs | Open containers in garages, sheds, patios, and gardens | Empty and scrub; store upside down or under cover when not in use. |
| Planters and flowerpot saucers | Water below pots or in decorative planters | Empty and scrub saucers; move them under cover or redesign the setup so water does not remain. |
| Children’s toys and outdoor equipment | Hollow toys, play equipment, carts, and inflatables | Drain and scrub, then store indoors or with openings facing down. |
| Trash and recycling containers | Water in the bottom, lid, or liner | Empty and clean; keep lids closed and containers positioned so rain cannot enter. |
| Swimming pools and covers | Neglected pools, puddles on covers, and water trapped at the edges | Maintain the pool as directed; remove water from the cover and repair or replace a cover that sags. |
| Birdbaths and fountains | Still water in basins, decorative bowls, pumps, and overflow areas | Empty and scrub removable basins weekly. For features that must retain water, use a tight cover or a permitted larvicide only when the label allows it. |
| Gutters and downspouts | Leaves or sediment holding water after rain | Clear the blockage and correct sagging or disconnected downspouts so water drains. |
| Rain barrels and storage tanks | Open tops, gaps around lids, and overflow outlets | Use a tight-fitting cover. Where a lid is not available, CDC recommends wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. |
| Tree holes | Natural cavities that retain rainwater | Follow the tree-hole procedure below; do not improvise with gravel, sand, concrete, or drilled holes. |
| Septic systems | Cracks, gaps, open vent or plumbing pipes | Repair cracks and gaps and cover open pipes with mesh whose holes are smaller than an adult mosquito. |
The CDC list is a prompt, not a complete inventory. Any object or feature that can hold water belongs in the inspection, including less obvious items such as tarps, wheelbarrows, pet dishes, drain pans, and construction materials.

Empty, then scrub
Pour out the water where it will drain safely, then scrub the container’s inside surfaces. A rinse alone may leave eggs stuck to the wall above the former water line. If the item is used for an animal, plant, or other purpose, clean it in a way that is safe for that use and rinse away cleaning residue.

Turn over or cover
Store buckets, toys, pots, lids, and tools upside down so rain cannot collect. If an item must remain upright, place it under a roof or use a cover that prevents water entry. A loose sheet that forms pockets can create another breeding site, so inspect the cover itself.
Discard what cannot be managed
Remove broken containers, scrap materials, and unwanted tires from the property. Use the disposal method available in your area; disposal requirements vary by location. Do not leave discarded items beside a fence or in a pile where they can continue collecting rain.
Keep water that must remain inaccessible
Some water is stored intentionally—for example, in a rain barrel or tank. The first choice is a tight-fitting lid that leaves no opening for adult mosquitoes. Inspect the lid after storms and whenever the container is moved.
Recommended Free Tools
For a container without a lid, CDC recommends wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. Fasten the mesh around the entire opening so mosquitoes cannot slip through gaps at the edges. Check for tears, loose corners, and openings around hoses or overflow pipes; a screen is effective only while it remains intact and fitted.

Do not assume that a cover is working because the water looks clear. Eggs and larvae may be hidden at the edges, and a cover can shift. Include covered storage in the weekly sweep.
When larvicide is appropriate
Larvicide is a backup for standing water that cannot be dumped, covered, or removed. CDC describes products such as mosquito dunks and other larvicides for suitable small bodies of water, but the label determines where a particular product may be used.
- Use it only in water that will not be used for drinking.
- Read the current product label before applying anything. Confirm the permitted water feature, dose, application method, and reapplication interval.
- Never apply more than the label allows or reapply sooner than directed.
- Keep children, pets, and wildlife away as required by the label, and store unused product safely.
- Continue looking for a way to drain, cover, or redesign the site; treatment does not make a removable breeding site disappear.
A product approved for one ornamental or utility-water situation is not automatically suitable for drinking-water containers, natural waterways, pools, or every type of fountain. If the label does not clearly permit the use, do not apply it; ask the local mosquito-control program or another appropriate authority for advice.

- Inspect the cavity after rain and confirm that it is retaining water.
- Use an expanding foam product made for home insulation projects, following all label instructions for preparation, application, curing, and safety.
- Keep people and animals away during application and curing as the label requires.
Do not fill a tree hole with gravel, sand, or concrete, and do not drill a drain hole into the tree. Those approaches can injure the tree or create additional problems. If the cavity is large, high, structurally significant, or beyond your ability to treat safely, seek advice from a qualified tree professional or your local mosquito-control program.
Check septic openings and plumbing vents
Septic-system cracks and gaps can admit mosquitoes or allow water to collect. Repair visible cracks or gaps and cover open vent or plumbing pipes with mesh whose holes are smaller than an adult mosquito, as CDC advises. Do not block required ventilation or alter a septic system in a way that could create a health or operational hazard; use a qualified professional when repairs are not straightforward.
What to do with pools, fountains, and other permanent features
Pools and pool covers
A maintained pool is not handled the same way as a neglected basin. Follow the pool manufacturer’s and local health guidance for circulation, cleaning, and chemical maintenance. During the weekly mosquito sweep, inspect the cover: rainwater sitting on top or in folds can become a separate breeding site even when the pool itself is maintained. Remove that water safely and fix sagging or damaged covers.

Birdbaths and fountains
For a removable basin, empty and scrub it weekly. For a fountain or feature that must retain water, keep it covered where practical or determine whether a label-approved larvicide is permitted for that exact water use. Pumps, overflow channels, and decorative recesses also need inspection; a moving display does not guarantee that every pocket is mosquito-free.

Rain barrels
Use a tight-fitting cover over the opening and screen any necessary overflow or inlet. Inspect seals, hose connections, and the area beneath the barrel. Water intended for drinking requires special care: do not use a larvicide unless the product label explicitly allows that use, and follow applicable local requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Indoor water sources are easy to miss
Outdoor cleanup will not solve a source inside the home. Check plant saucers, vases, mop buckets, humidifier reservoirs, dehumidifier pans, appliance drip trays, pet bowls, and containers stored in a garage or utility room. Empty and scrub items that are not needed; clean and refill necessary items on a schedule that prevents stagnant water. Repair leaks that leave puddles under sinks, refrigerators, water heaters, or washing machines.
When an indoor container must hold water, keep it covered where safe and practical, and do not use a pesticide indoors unless its label specifically permits that application. Ventilate and follow all label precautions for any product used.
Persistent, extensive, or public water needs outside help
Contact the local mosquito-control program when water is on public property, covers a large area, returns despite reasonable household corrections, or involves drainage, wetlands, abandoned structures, or infrastructure you cannot safely alter. CDC describes local agencies and mosquito-control districts as leaders in large-scale source reduction and mosquito-control work.
No single agency can be named without your location. Search your city, county, or state health department for a mosquito-control program, or use the contact information provided by local government. Describe the site, how often it refills, whether it is public or private, and whether people or animals use the water. Do not enter restricted property or attempt to drain infrastructure yourself.
Choose the response by water type
| Situation | First response | If that is not possible |
|---|---|---|
| Removable water in a portable item | Empty and scrub it weekly. | Turn it over, cover it, store it under cover, or discard it. |
| Water that must be stored | Fit a tight cover. | Use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito where CDC’s mesh guidance fits the container. |
| Water that cannot be drained, covered, or removed | Check whether a label-approved larvicide is permitted. | Apply only according to the label and only when the water is not for drinking. |
| Tree cavity | Use labeled expanding foam intended for home insulation projects. | Ask a qualified tree professional or local mosquito-control program; never use gravel, sand, concrete, or drilled holes. |
| Public, extensive, or recurring site | Report it to the local mosquito-control program. | Follow the agency’s instructions rather than modifying public infrastructure yourself. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Checking only after seeing adult mosquitoes: Keep the weekly schedule even when adults are not obvious; immature stages are in water and may be hidden.
- Dumping without scrubbing: Eggs can remain on container walls. Scrub before storing the item.
- Using a loose cover: A cover that sags or leaves edge gaps can trap rain and admit mosquitoes. Fit it tightly and inspect it after storms.
- Treating drinking water with an unsuitable product: Larvicide permissions are product-specific. Follow the label and never assume a dunk is safe for every water use.
- Pouring water into another container: Moving the water does not solve the problem if the receiving spot can hold it. Drain it where it will not pool.
- Drilling or filling a tree hole: CDC advises against drilling holes or filling cavities with gravel, sand, or concrete. Use the specified foam guidance instead.
- Relying on adult mosquito spray: Adulticide may address flying adults but does not remove the breeding water. Continue source reduction.
- Ignoring indoor and hidden areas: Include garages, storage rooms, plant trays, gutters, pool covers, and the underside of outdoor items in every sweep.
A simple maintenance routine
Choose a recurring day for the full inspection and keep a short checklist near the door or storage area. Empty and scrub portable containers, turn them over, secure covers, clear gutters, inspect pool covers, and check tree holes and septic openings. Add a brief inspection after heavy rain and whenever outdoor equipment is moved.
If a site repeatedly returns, change its design: improve drainage, store the object under cover, replace a damaged lid, or remove the item. When redesign is impossible, document the site and use only a label-approved treatment or local-agency guidance. This approach keeps the household response focused on the place where mosquitoes breed rather than on repeated emergency spraying.
