If an intimate image of you appears in search results without your consent, report it to the website hosting it and submit a separate removal request to the search engine. If the image was made when you were under 18, use NCMEC’s Take It Down service; if it was made when you were 18 or older, consider StopNCII. These routes address different parts of the problem, and none can guarantee removal everywhere.
Nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII) means intimate photos or videos shared without the depicted person’s permission. Agreeing to create an image or share it privately is not consent to publish it. Google Account Help puts it plainly: “If you agreed to have an image taken or shared privately in the past, it doesn’t mean you gave permission for someone else to share it with others.”
Which report should you make?
A search result and the page or post it points to are controlled by different services. Use the route that matches the action you need; in many cases, that means making more than one report.

What to do first—and how to handle evidence safely
If you are in immediate danger, prioritize local emergency assistance. You do not have to contact the person who posted the image, confront the uploader, or make a public post to seek help. A victim-support organization can help you decide what to do next.

If it is safe, note the search query, the search-result URL, and the URL of the page hosting the image. Keep report confirmation numbers or case IDs. Avoid forwarding or reposting the image as evidence; follow the reporting service’s instructions for any material it asks you to provide.
If the image was made when you were under 18, do not download it, make a new copy, or send it to anyone just to submit it to Take It Down. NCMEC says to submit only images already on your device and cautions users not to send, share, or download an image to create a submission. You can still report a URL or ask a trusted support organization for help.
Report the image to the service hosting it
Start with the platform or website where the image is actually posted. Use its current nonconsensual intimate image, intimate-content, or abuse reporting process, and provide the post or page URL and the details the form requests. If the material is on a social platform, use that platform’s own help center; if it is on a personal website, the site owner or hosting service may have a reporting route.

Google says it cannot remove content from a non-Google service because that service controls its own material. NCMEC also notes that a direct report to the platform may be a fast route. Reporting to the host is optional if contacting it is unsafe; you can seek help from a support organization instead. Reporting forms change, so use the service’s current official help page rather than relying on old click-by-click instructions.
Ask search engines to remove the result
Google Search
Use Google’s dedicated intimate-content removal process in Google Search Help. The request may ask for the name of the person depicted, links to the image or hosting page, and other context to identify the result. Google says it aims to review a request within 48 hours and will email its decision. That is Google’s stated review target, not a guarantee that every request will be approved or that every copy will be found.
If Google finds that the content violates its policy, it says it will remove the result and, if you select that option, try to remove copies that may appear in future. Google does not guarantee it will catch every copy. This action affects discovery through Google Search; it does not delete the source page. Send a separate request to the host when it is safe and appropriate.

Other search engines
Submit a request through each relevant search engine’s current official NCII or personal-content reporting channel. The available guidance here does not establish current form instructions for every search engine worldwide, so check the engine’s own help pages for its eligibility rules and required information.
If the host has already removed the image
If the page is gone but Google still shows a stale result or cached information, request removal of the outdated result through Google’s current outdated-content process. Search indexes take time to refresh, so a result may persist for a while after the original page changes or disappears.
Choose a hash service based on when the image was made
Hash tools create a digital fingerprint of an image so participating services can look for matching material. The image itself is not shared through these tools, but the services do not cover every website, private area, or search engine. They supplement host and search-engine reports; they do not replace them.

If the image was made before you turned 18: Take It Down
NCMEC’s Take It Down is free and can be used anonymously. It generates the hash on your device; NCMEC says, “Your image or video remains on your device and is not uploaded.” Participating platforms can use the fingerprint to detect matching content on public or unencrypted services and may take action. NCMEC cautions that platforms may have limited ability to remove material already posted.
Use only an image already on your device, and do not create or obtain a copy solely to submit it. Take It Down cannot promise removal from every service. If the image is no longer on your device, report the URLs to the host and search engines and consider asking a support organization about safe next steps.

If the image was made when you were 18 or older: StopNCII
NCMEC directs adults to StopNCII, a free global service operated by the Revenge Porn Helpline. StopNCII creates a digital fingerprint and shares that fingerprint—not the image—with participating platforms, which can scan for matches and block posting. It is a way to help limit matching content on participating services, not a universal takedown request.

Search-engine participation and implementation can change. Ofcom’s 2026 statement reported that Microsoft said it identified and acted on 268,899 images returned in Bing image results following a StopNCII database pilot. That is a figure Microsoft reported to Ofcom about that pilot, not an independent audit, a general success rate, or a guarantee for an individual report. Submit a separate search-engine request when a result needs removal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if a covered U.S. platform does not remove it?
The FTC’s May 19, 2026 consumer guidance says platforms covered by the U.S. Take It Down Act must provide an easy way to report covered intimate images and remove them within 48 hours after a request. The FTC also says: “The platform also has to find and remove known identical copies within 48 hours.” This requirement is specific to the United States and covered platforms; it should not be read as a worldwide rule or as the deadline for every search engine to remove results.
If a covered platform misses that 48-hour period, the FTC says to report it at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The sources do not resolve every question about whether a particular service or situation falls within the Act. For advice on your circumstances or another country’s laws, contact a local legal or victim-support resource.

How to follow up without spreading the image further
- Keep the URLs, dates of reports, and confirmation numbers together in a private, secure place.
- Check whether the host and search engine sent a decision or need more information; respond through their official channels.
- If the original page is removed but a Google result remains, use the outdated-result route rather than treating the stale result as proof that the image is still hosted there.
- If the image appears again, report the new page or result separately. A hash service may help participating platforms find matches, but it does not guarantee that every re-upload will be caught.
- Ask a trusted support organization to help with reporting or safety planning if handling the process alone feels unsafe or overwhelming.
