Handle a suspected WordPress hack as an incident, not as a single bad file. Record what happened, preserve a copy, contain access, scan both the server and administrator computers, compare files with a known-clean source, inspect the database and accounts, remove the entry point, rotate every credential, then verify Google’s warnings have cleared. Deleting an obvious PHP file without closing the original access route is a common way to get reinfected.

Recognize the signs of a compromised WordPress site

One symptom does not prove the cause, but several together justify immediate containment. Record the exact URL, warning text, and time for every symptom before changing anything.

  • Visitors are redirected to an unfamiliar site, search page, download, or mobile-only destination.
  • The homepage is defaced, or new posts, pages, users, and links appear that nobody on your team created.
  • Google results show pages or topics you never published. Search site:example.com (replace the domain) and look for spam titles, pharmaceutical offers, gambling pages, or foreign-language content.
  • Search Console displays a message or a finding in its Security Issues report.
  • Chrome, another browser, an antivirus product, or Google Safe Browsing warns that the site may contain malware, phishing, or hacked content.
  • Your host sends an abuse notice, suspends the account, reports unusual resource use, or identifies outbound spam.
  • An unfamiliar administrator account, API key, SSH key, scheduled task, or recently modified file appears.
  • Pages become slow, return intermittent server errors, or show different content to logged-in users, search crawlers, and ordinary visitors.

WordPress.org’s hacked-site guidance treats redirects, defacements, spam, unknown administrators, unexpected files, host suspension, antivirus alerts, and blacklist warnings as indicators worth documenting. A clean-looking homepage is not evidence that the installation is safe.

What to do in the first hour

1. Create an incident record

Write down affected URLs, browser or host warnings, suspicious usernames, filenames, IP addresses shown in logs, and the first and most recent times you observed the problem. Save screenshots and the raw warning emails. This timeline helps distinguish a one-time compromise from an active reinfection.

2. Preserve the current state

Take a full snapshot of the files and database before deleting or editing anything, even if the snapshot is infected. Keep it offline and label it with the date and time. A preserved copy lets you recover a deleted file, compare timestamps, and provide evidence to your host or an incident-response specialist.

3. Contact the host early

Tell the host that you suspect a compromise and ask whether other sites, accounts, cron jobs, or control-panel users on the same hosting account are affected. Shared hosting can allow one infected site to expose another. Ask for relevant access logs and for the host’s procedure for taking a clean site out of quarantine.

4. Limit access without destroying evidence

Temporarily restrict administrative access to known IP addresses if your host supports it, disable nonessential users, and put the site behind a maintenance page if visitors could be exposed. Do not mass-delete files from the web root: that can destroy evidence and leave the original access path untouched.

Scan the site and every computer that administers it

Use more than one view of the public site

Run a reputable remote malware scan against the public domain, then inspect the site while logged out and from a separate network. Compare the page source, redirects, response headers, and behavior on desktop and mobile. A conditional redirect may appear only to search crawlers or first-time mobile visitors.

Check Google’s reports

In Search Console, open the Security Issues report and read each affected resource and issue type. Search the domain with site: to find residual spam pages that are not linked from the site. Check browser and Safe Browsing warnings as well as messages from your host. Save the reports before beginning cleanup so you can verify that every listed issue was addressed.

Scan administrator workstations

Run a current malware scan on every computer used for WordPress, hosting-panel, FTP/SFTP, SSH, database, email, or DNS administration. WordPress.org warns that an infected local machine can steal FTP or /wp-admin credentials and silently re-infect a cleaned server. Do not change passwords from a computer you have not checked.

Compare with a known-clean baseline

If you have a backup from before the first suspicious event, compare it with the current installation. Sucuri describes comparison with a clean backup as the best way to identify changed files when such a backup exists. When no trustworthy backup is available, obtain a matching WordPress package and clean copies of every plugin and theme from its official or original vendor source, then use those as your baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a safe backup and recovery point

Keep two separate copies: the untouched incident snapshot and a working copy used for analysis. Export the complete database, wp-content, configuration files, uploads, server rules, and any custom deployment files. Record file ownership and permissions where your host allows it.

  • Do not assume the newest backup is clean; malware may have been present for weeks.
  • Choose a restore point that clearly predates the compromise, then scan it before putting it online.
  • Never overwrite your only copy while testing a restore.
  • Document which backup was restored, what was replaced, and what was manually repaired.

A clean restore is often faster than hand-editing hundreds of files, but it is safe only when the backup predates the attack and credentials and vulnerable components will also be reset. Otherwise, the restored site can be compromised again immediately.

Inspect files, accounts, scheduled tasks, and the database

Files and directories

Start with recently modified files, then review the document root, wp-admin, wp-includes, plugin and theme directories, upload directories, and server configuration files. Unexpected PHP files in an uploads directory, oddly named files beside legitimate plugins, and recently added files with timestamps that do not match a deployment deserve priority.

Look for code that decodes or executes data, creates remote requests, writes files, changes administrator capabilities, or runs only when a particular cookie, referrer, IP address, or user agent is present. Obfuscation alone is not proof of malware—some legitimate libraries compress strings—but unfamiliar code should be compared with a clean package before removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users and authentication artifacts

List every WordPress user, role, administrator capability, application password, hosting-panel account, FTP/SFTP user, SSH key, API token, and email account connected to the site. Record creation dates and last-login data where available. Remove accounts that cannot be explained and disable legitimate accounts until their owners confirm ownership and reset credentials.

Scheduled execution

Inspect WordPress cron events, server cron jobs, control-panel scheduled tasks, deployment hooks, and system services available to the account. A scheduled task can recreate a deleted backdoor minutes after cleanup. Pay particular attention to jobs that call a PHP file in uploads, a temporary directory, or an unfamiliar path.

Database content

Search posts, pages, widgets, options, user metadata, and plugin tables for injected scripts, hidden iframes, spam links, unfamiliar administrator records, redirect targets, and serialized settings that do not belong. Preserve a database export before editing. Because serialized data can break when edited as plain text, use a tool that understands serialized values or have an experienced administrator perform the change.

Remove the infection in a controlled sequence

  1. Put the site in a controlled state. Coordinate maintenance mode, host restrictions, and a clean administrator workstation. Keep the incident snapshot untouched.
  2. Replace WordPress core. Download the exact matching release from wordpress.org and replace core files through FTP or SFTP. An administrator-panel reinstall may overwrite existing files but will not necessarily remove newly added files, which is why a clean package and a file comparison are safer.
  3. Reinstall plugins and themes. Obtain each component from its official repository or the original vendor. Remove abandoned, nulled, or unneeded components instead of trying to sanitize code you cannot verify. Preserve custom code separately and compare it line by line with a known-good version.
  4. Clean uploads and writable directories. Remove executable files that do not belong in media directories, but first confirm that a plugin has not intentionally stored a required script there. Set server rules so uploads cannot execute PHP where your host supports that control.
  5. Repair the database. Delete injected posts, options, widgets, links, and user records after exporting the affected tables. Check for redirect code and hidden content in both published and trashed records.
  6. Remove persistence. Delete malicious cron events, server tasks, drop-in files, unknown mu-plugins, rogue configuration includes, and other mechanisms that can restore the payload.
  7. Check the result from outside. Clear caches, purge a content-delivery layer if used, and test the public site from a clean browser. Re-scan before reopening normal traffic.

Do not treat deletion of one suspicious file as completion. A backdoor can be a newly added PHP file, a modified legitimate file, a hidden administrator, a database payload, or code that recreates itself. The entry point and the stolen credential must be removed as well.

Backdoor-specific investigation

Find the file or code that survives cleanup

Compare hashes or exact file contents against a clean WordPress release and clean plugin or theme packages. Review files with recent timestamps, but remember that an attacker can preserve or alter timestamps. Inspect PHP files in writable locations and configuration files that load code before WordPress starts.

Trace how it was reached

Use web-server, PHP, FTP/SFTP, SSH, hosting-panel, and WordPress logs to identify the first suspicious request and the account or endpoint it used. Common pathways include a vulnerable plugin, a stolen administrator session, exposed file-transfer credentials, a weak hosting-panel password, or an infected administrator workstation. If logs are unavailable, record that uncertainty rather than assuming a cause.

Look for reinfection indicators

  • The same file returns after deletion.
  • A new administrator appears after passwords were changed.
  • Redirects return only after a scheduled interval.
  • Clean files are modified again soon after deployment.
  • Outbound requests or mail continue from a supposedly idle site.

These symptoms indicate an unresolved persistence mechanism, credential, or neighboring account. Stop repeated edits and involve the host or a professional who is comfortable with PHP, databases, and server logs.

Rotate every credential after the files are clean

Change secrets only after the server and administrator computers have been checked. Use a separate, trusted device and unique, long passwords. Rotate in this order so an attacker cannot use an old session to undo the repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. WordPress administrator and editor passwords; remove unknown users and revoke application passwords.
  2. Hosting control-panel, FTP/SFTP, SSH, and deployment credentials; replace unknown SSH keys.
  3. Database user passwords and the corresponding WordPress configuration value.
  4. Email accounts, SMTP passwords, DNS or registrar access, API keys, payment integrations, analytics, and other connected services.
  5. Any password reused on another site, because the original theft may have exposed it elsewhere.

WordPress.com recommends resetting the account, WP Admin, and other user passwords; WordPress.org advises changing passwords again after the site is clean. Revoke active sessions where the platform provides that control, then require multifactor authentication for administrators.

Update and harden the repaired installation

  • Update WordPress, every retained plugin, and every retained theme to supported versions.
  • Remove abandoned components, unused themes, inactive plugins, and unlicensed or modified packages.
  • Give each person the lowest role that permits their work; do not share administrator accounts.
  • Restrict /wp-admin, file transfer, SSH, and hosting-panel access by IP, VPN, or multifactor authentication where practical.
  • Disable file editing from the WordPress dashboard if your deployment process does not require it.
  • Use file-integrity monitoring to alert on added, modified, or removed files and review the alerts rather than ignoring them.
  • Keep offline, dated backups and test restoring them on a separate environment.
  • Centralize logs and set alerts for new administrators, password resets, plugin changes, scheduled-task changes, and unusual outbound traffic.

WordPress hardening guidance points to security plugins and file-integrity monitoring as useful layers, but no scanner replaces updates, least privilege, credential hygiene, and a tested restore process.

Verify Google and blacklist recovery

Clear every listed issue

After cleanup, open Search Console’s Security Issues report, fix each affected URL or issue category, and request a review when Google provides that option. Do not request review while a backdoor or spam page remains; a failed review delays recovery and leaves the underlying problem unresolved.

Check indexing and recrawling

Repeat site:example.com searches for residual spam pages and inspect canonical, sitemap, and internal-link data for URLs you did not create. Google may need to crawl the repaired pages again before its warning changes. Keep the site available and monitor the report rather than repeatedly submitting identical requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the visitor experience

Test the homepage, representative posts, login, forms, checkout or donation flows, feeds, robots.txt, XML sitemaps, and redirects from a clean browser. Check both authenticated and anonymous views. A site can appear fixed to an administrator while still serving malicious content to search crawlers or first-time visitors.

Choose between self-cleanup, host assistance, and professional response

Option File and database work Entry-point analysis Credentials and accounts Aftercare Best fit
Self-service with a clean backup You restore and compare the full site Possible when logs and timestamps are available You must rotate every secret yourself You must configure monitoring and retest An experienced owner with trusted backups and safe SFTP/database access
Host incident assistance May include quarantine, snapshots, and server-level review Depends on the host’s logs and support scope Host credentials still require your action Often includes account monitoring Shared hosting, suspension, or suspected neighboring-site exposure
Managed malware-removal service Specialists handle files, databases, accounts, and hidden backdoors Designed to investigate persistence and the original route Can guide or perform coordinated rotation May include blacklist and post-cleanup monitoring No trustworthy backup, repeated reinfection, sensitive data, or limited technical skill
Remote scanner only Reports public indicators; does not guarantee server cleanup Limited visibility into authentication and scheduled tasks Does not replace credential rotation Useful for repeated checks, not a complete response Initial triage and verification after a real cleanup

Escalate immediately when there is no trustworthy backup, the infection returns, the site handles sensitive information, the host has suspended the account, or you cannot safely use SSH, SFTP, or database tools. A professional service such as Sucuri documents assistance for malware, spam, backdoors, hidden content, and blacklist status; evaluate its current scope and terms before engaging.

Common failure modes and their fixes

“I deleted the suspicious file, but it came back.”

Search for another backdoor, a scheduled task, a malicious administrator, an infected plugin or theme, and credentials that were never rotated. Restore a known-clean baseline if you cannot establish which component is trusted.

“The site works, but Google still shows a warning.”

Confirm that every Search Console issue is fixed, remove residual indexed spam, test cached and mobile views, and allow Google to recrawl. Safe Browsing warnings can remain until a later crawl detects the repair.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

“The backup restored the hack.”

The backup may postdate the initial compromise or include the same stolen credentials. Inspect its creation date, scan it offline, replace components from clean sources, and rotate credentials after the restore.

“The host suspended the account.”

Do not repeatedly upload edited files. Ask the host for the suspension reason, affected paths, logs, and quarantine procedure. Preserve the snapshot and provide a remediation plan showing cleanup, updates, credential rotation, and verification.

“I cannot tell whether a strange PHP line is legitimate.”

Compare the complete file with the exact official package or vendor release. If you cannot explain the code and its provenance, stop editing and ask a qualified WordPress or PHP incident responder to review it.

Maintain a clean site after recovery

Schedule regular, tested backups with at least one offline copy. Review integrity alerts, administrator lists, login events, plugin and theme changes, and Search Console notifications on a defined schedule. Apply security updates promptly, remove components you no longer need, and rehearse restoring the site to a staging environment. The goal is not merely to remove today’s payload; it is to make the next unauthorized change visible and reversible.
