In Gmail, search for has:attachment larger:10M, review the matching messages, delete only what you no longer need, then empty Trash and Spam if you need the space reclaimed. The search matches message size, so inspect each result rather than assuming the largest attachment is the only reason a message appears.
The fastest safe cleanup
This workflow works in Gmail on the web and is based on Gmail’s built-in search. It does not sort your inbox into an attachment-size column; instead, Gmail returns messages that meet the search criteria.
- Open Gmail and click the search field at the top.
- Enter
has:attachment larger:10Mand press Enter. Google documents this query for finding messages with attachments larger than 10 MB. - Read the result list and open messages when you need to confirm the sender, conversation, attachment, or retention requirements.
- Select only messages that are safe to remove, then click the Delete (trash-can) button.
- If permanent removal is necessary, open Trash and use Empty Trash now. Open Spam and use its permanent-delete control as well; both folders continue to count toward storage until they are cleared.
- Check your storage total later. Google says that after deleting a large number of files, the account total can take up to 48–72 hours to update accurately.
Do not skip the review step. A large attachment may be a contract, receipt, family photo, or work record that you still need, and emptying Trash removes the recovery window.
What Gmail’s search operators actually match
The operators are filters that can be combined in one query. The important distinction is that larger: and size: are message-size filters. They do not promise that one individual attachment exceeds the number you entered. A message can match because of its attachment payload plus the rest of the email, including quoted conversation content.

Attachment presence and total size
has:attachment larger:10M requires an attachment and asks Gmail to return messages larger than 10 MB. Change the number to make the result set broader or narrower. Use a lower threshold when you are close to quota and a higher threshold when you want a short list for manual review.
File type plus size
To focus on PDFs, use Google’s example filename:.pdf larger:5M. The filename: operator narrows the result by the attachment’s filename pattern, while larger: applies the message-size condition. You can adapt the extension to another type, such as a spreadsheet or image, while keeping the same review process.
Other useful operators
Gmail’s documented search operators include filename:, larger:, smaller:, and size:, as well as has:attachment. Combining operators lets you express a cleanup target instead of scanning every message. For example, a filename filter can isolate one kind of document, and a size filter can keep the list manageable.

1. Start with a conservative query
Begin with has:attachment larger:10M. Ten megabytes is Google’s documented starting point, not a requirement. If it returns too many results, increase the threshold. If it returns too few and your account is still near its limit, reduce it and repeat the review.
2. Read the result list in context
Look at the sender, subject, date, and conversation participants. Open a message to identify the actual files and understand whether the thread contains business records, legal material, invoices, travel documents, or personal memories. A conversation may include several attachments across replies, and deleting the thread removes the message history as well as the files shown in it.
3. Preserve anything with a retention requirement
Before deleting, check your employer’s, school’s, or family’s retention rules. If you need a record, leave the message in Gmail or move the information to an approved location according to your policy. The built-in search cannot determine whether a file is legally or operationally important.
4. Delete selected messages
Use the checkboxes beside only the messages you have cleared for removal, then click Delete. Avoid selecting the entire result page unless every item has been reviewed. Gmail places deleted messages in Trash first, giving you a chance to reconsider before permanent deletion.

5. Clear the folders that still consume quota
When the objective is to reclaim storage, open Trash and permanently empty it after your final review. Do the same for Spam. Google states that messages in these folders continue to count against your storage limit until they are permanently cleared.

6. Recheck after the account recalculates
Storage totals are not guaranteed to change immediately after a bulk cleanup. Allow up to 48–72 hours for Google’s systems to recalculate a large deletion, then check the account’s storage view again. If the number is still high, Gmail may not be the only service using the shared pool.

The final two examples illustrate how the operators can be combined; they are not a promise that a particular filename or threshold exists in your mailbox. Gmail’s results depend on the messages in the account.
Why an expected message may not appear
Spam and Trash are outside a normal search
Gmail excludes Spam and Trash from standard searches by default. If you remember a large attachment in one of those folders, open the folder and inspect it separately, or use Gmail’s search-scope controls to include it. This matters after an earlier cleanup: a message you deleted may still consume storage even though the regular search no longer displays it.

The number describes the message, not one file
A search such as larger:10M evaluates the message’s size. It can therefore return a thread whose individual files are each below 10 MB, or omit a message when the attachment you care about is below the chosen message-size threshold. Open the message and inspect the attachment details before deciding what to keep.
Filename matching is literal enough to miss variations
filename:.pdf targets filenames containing the PDF extension. A scanned document saved as an image, a PDF with an unusual filename, or a file in a different format will not be found by that exact filter. Run a broader attachment-size search when a file-type query is too narrow.
Conversation view can hide the item you expect
Search results may represent a conversation rather than a single isolated email. Open the thread and expand individual messages to see which reply carries the attachment. Deleting the conversation can remove messages you did not intend to discard, so select a message only after understanding the thread’s contents.
Gmail storage: what deleting attachments can and cannot fix
Personal accounts use a shared pool
Google describes 15 GB for a personal account, shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Removing large Gmail messages is only one possible way to reduce usage. If Drive files or Photos items occupy most of the pool, an inbox cleanup alone will not produce a large change.
Workspace quotas are different
Work and school accounts do not necessarily have the personal-account allowance. Their storage and attachment policies can be set by an administrator. If you use Gmail through an organization, check that organization’s quota and retention rules before deleting mail.

Buying more storage is optional
Google lists clearing space or purchasing additional storage as options when an account is close to or over quota. You do not need an upgraded plan to run the search, delete messages, or empty Trash and Spam. Consider additional storage only after identifying what is consuming the shared pool and deciding that permanent expansion is preferable to continued cleanup.
Do not confuse sending limits with search limits
For personal Gmail accounts, Google lists a 25 MB limit for sending attachments. When the combined attachments exceed that limit, Gmail replaces them with a Google Drive link. That is a sending rule, not the largest message that Gmail’s search can find and not a requirement for the larger: operator. Work and school sending limits are administrator-controlled, so they may differ.
A practical cleanup plan for a nearly full account
Phase 1: identify the biggest candidates
Run has:attachment larger:10M and work from the results that are clearly obsolete. Use the file-type example when one category, such as old PDFs, is responsible for much of the clutter. Keep a written note of any messages that must remain so a later pass does not revisit the same decisions.

Select a manageable group, delete it, and briefly verify that the selected conversations were the intended ones. Batching reduces the chance of an accidental broad selection and makes it easier to identify which cleanup produced a storage change.
Phase 3: permanently clear only after the final check
When you are certain the deleted messages are not needed, empty Trash and Spam. If you are uncertain about a message, leave it in Trash until your retention decision is complete; permanent clearing is the irreversible stage of this workflow.
Phase 4: inspect the other services in the pool
If Gmail cleanup does not materially reduce usage after the recalculation period, inspect Drive and Photos because personal-account storage is shared. Continuing to delete mail cannot solve a quota problem caused primarily by those services.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Deleting every search result immediately: Re-run the query, open representative messages, and select only conversations you have approved for removal.
- Assuming 10 MB means one 10 MB attachment: Treat the result as a message-size match and inspect the files inside each conversation.
- Forgetting Spam and Trash: Check both folders when the goal is actual quota recovery; they remain counted until permanently cleared.
- Expecting the quota number to change at once: Allow Google’s stated 48–72-hour recalculation window after a large deletion.
- Applying personal-account figures to a Workspace account: Confirm the administrator’s quota and retention policy instead of using the 15 GB personal-account figure.
- Using the 25 MB sending limit as a search threshold: Keep sending limits separate from message-size search operators.
Choose the right threshold for your situation
The 10 MB query is a practical first pass because it is the threshold Google uses in its storage guidance. It is not a promise that every matching message is disposable, nor does it identify every message consuming meaningful space. If the result list is short, you can inspect it quickly and then lower the threshold. If the list is very long, raise the threshold temporarily to handle the largest candidates first.
Use a file-type filter when you already know what kind of material is taking space. For example, filename:.pdf larger:5M can create a focused list of larger PDF-bearing messages. After that pass, run the broader attachment query again; a file-type search can miss images, spreadsheets, archives, or files whose names do not use the extension you expected.

Keep a note of the queries you have completed and the date of the cleanup. That simple record helps you avoid repeating the same review and shows which threshold produced useful candidates. It also makes it easier to explain why a particular message was retained if the mailbox is shared or governed by an organizational policy.
A review checklist before you delete
- Confirm that the sender and recipients are familiar and that the thread is not part of an active project.
- Open each relevant message and identify every attachment in the conversation, not just the file shown in the search preview.
- Check whether the message is an invoice, contract, receipt, travel record, medical document, tax material, or another record you may need later.
- Verify that another approved copy exists before removing a personal photo or document.
- Consider whether deleting the conversation would remove useful context or earlier replies along with the attachment.
- For a work or school account, follow the administrator’s retention and legal-hold rules before using Delete.
- Only after the review, select the messages and move them to Trash.
This checklist is intentionally separate from the search itself. Gmail can identify messages that meet size conditions, but it cannot decide whether a message is confidential, historically valuable, or subject to a retention requirement.

First, verify that Trash and Spam were permanently cleared if reclaiming quota was the goal. Then allow the full 48–72-hour update window after a large deletion. Checking immediately can make a successful cleanup appear ineffective because the account total has not been recalculated.
If the total remains high after that period, review the shared storage pool rather than repeating the same Gmail search indefinitely. Google describes personal-account storage as a combined allowance for Gmail, Drive, and Photos. A large video or document in Drive, or a substantial Photos library, can account for more usage than the messages you removed.
Additional Google storage is an optional next step, not a prerequisite for this workflow. Identify which service is consuming the space first, then decide whether permanent expansion is preferable to further deletion. For organizational accounts, ask the administrator which quota and storage reports apply; the personal 15 GB figure may not be relevant.
When this method is enough—and when it is not
Gmail search is sufficient when your goal is to locate and remove a known class of large, attachment-bearing messages. It is less complete when the account is over quota because of Drive or Photos, when your organization imposes retention rules, or when you need a catalog of every individual file rather than a list of messages. In those cases, use the Gmail results as one part of the cleanup and address the other storage sources or policy requirements separately.
The reliable sequence is therefore: search with a size-and-attachment query, inspect conversations, delete selectively, permanently clear Trash and Spam only when ready, and wait for the storage system to recalculate. That approach frees Gmail space without treating a message-size filter as an automatic judgment about which attachments are safe to discard.

Can Gmail search for a specific attachment type?
