Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For Minecraft: Java Edition, the current client log is logs/latest.log inside the game directory. On the official launcher, that normally means %appdata%.minecraftlogslatest.log on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/logs/latest.log on macOS, and ~/.minecraft/logs/latest.log on Linux. Modded instances can use a different directory, so open the folder for the exact instance before looking for its logs folder.
Use latest.log for launch failures, connection problems, missing resources, and errors that do not create a crash report. Use a file in crash-reports when the game actually crashes, Forge’s debug.log when Forge diagnostics are needed, and an hs_err_pidXXXXX.log file when the Java virtual machine itself fails.

Know which Minecraft file answers your question
Minecraft writes several kinds of diagnostic files. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Start by identifying what happened: did the game keep running with an error, close with a Minecraft crash screen, or terminate because Java itself failed?
| File or folder | What it contains | When to use it | Typical location |
|---|---|---|---|
logs/latest.log |
The newest complete client session log, including startup, loading, warnings, errors, and shutdown events. | The game will not launch, a server will not connect, a resource or mod fails to load, or no crash report was created. | The logs folder in the game or instance directory. |
yyyy-mm-dd_number.log.gz |
An older session log compressed with gzip. | The problem happened in an earlier session and is no longer in latest.log. |
The same logs folder. |
crash-yyyy-mm-dd_hh.mm.ss-client.txt |
A report generated when the Minecraft client crashes, including a stack trace and system details. | The game closed and produced a crash report. | The crash-reports folder. |
crash-yyyy-mm-dd_hh.mm.ss-server.txt |
A report for a dedicated server crash rather than a client crash. | You are diagnosing a server process. | The server’s crash-reports folder. |
debug.log |
Forge’s detailed diagnostic log. | A Forge installation needs more detail, especially when no crash report exists. | The Forge installation or modpack instance’s logs folder. |
hs_err_pidXXXXX.log |
A JVM fatal-error file written when Java itself crashes. | No normal Minecraft crash report was produced and the process disappeared or froze. | Usually the game directory, although Java may report another location. |
The newest file is not always the useful file. A crash report created at 15:10 cannot explain a failure that occurred at 16:00, while latest.log may have been overwritten by a later successful launch. Match the file’s timestamp to the incident.

Find the official Java game directory
These are the standard paths for the official Minecraft Java Launcher. Put the path into the operating system’s file browser, not into Minecraft’s chat box.
Windows
- Press
Windows+Rto open the Run dialog. - Enter
%appdata%.minecraftand press Enter. If you prefer, open File Explorer and paste the same path into its address bar. - Open
logs, then openlatest.logwith a text editor.
The direct path to the current log is %appdata%.minecraftlogslatest.log. In a normal Windows installation, %appdata% expands to the user’s roaming application-data directory.

- In Finder, choose Go and then Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/minecraftand press Return. - Open
logs, thenlatest.log.
The full default path is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/logs/latest.log. The Library folder is hidden in ordinary Finder browsing, which is why Go to Folder is the quickest route.
Linux
- Open your file manager or a terminal.
- Go to
~/.minecraft. You can paste that path into a file manager’s location field, or usecd ~/.minecraftin a terminal. - Open
logs/latest.log.
The default path is ~/.minecraft/logs/latest.log. A leading dot makes .minecraft hidden in many Linux file managers; enable hidden files if it does not appear.
When the launcher uses a different folder
The paths above describe the official launcher’s default game directory. Modpack and instance-based launchers commonly assign each installation its own game directory. Looking in the global .minecraft folder in that situation can show an unrelated vanilla log or no log at all.
- Open the launcher and select the Minecraft instance that produced the problem.
- Choose the control labelled Folder, Open folder, Open instance folder, or an equivalent option.
- In the folder that opens, enter
logsand selectlatest.log,debug.log, or the relevant dated log. - If the instance has its own
crash-reportsfolder, use the report with a timestamp matching the failed launch.
Do not copy a log from another profile merely because it has the same Minecraft version. Mods, loader versions, Java settings, and resource packs can differ between instances, so the directory belonging to the failed instance is part of the evidence.

Locate and use crash reports
Minecraft creates a crash report when the client catches a game-level crash. Look in the crash-reports folder beside the instance’s logs folder. Client reports commonly use a name such as crash-2026-10-15_14.32.08-client.txt; the date and time in the name let you match it to the event. A server report uses the corresponding -server.txt ending.
Read the stack trace first
Open the report as plain text and start at the section headed ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----. The stack trace immediately below that heading is the primary place to look for the exception and the code path that failed. Read down until the first useful exception, then inspect the deepest Caused by: entry rather than treating every later line as a separate cause.
Later sections contain environment information. Check the Minecraft version, mod-loader version, operating system, Java version, and memory allocation against the configuration you intended to run. A report can reveal that the launcher started a different Java runtime or game version than the one you selected.
When there is no crash report
A failed launch, a hang, a forced close, or a launcher error may leave no file in crash-reports. In that case, use latest.log. Forge support guidance also treats debug.log as useful when a crash report is absent, because it records detailed loading and initialization activity before the failure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Get Forge’s debug.log
Forge users often need debug.log rather than only latest.log. With the official launcher, open the Forge installation’s game directory, enter logs, and select debug.log. If you use a modpack instance, open that instance’s folder first; the file belongs to the instance, not necessarily to the global .minecraft directory.
Enable the file in CurseForge
CurseForge can leave Forge’s debug logging disabled by default. Enable it before reproducing the problem:

- Open
logs/debug.login that instance directory.
If you enable the option after the failed run, the earlier session cannot be reconstructed. Relaunch after enabling it so the new file contains the relevant startup sequence.
Understand older and compressed logs
After each session, Minecraft rotates older logs. The current one is latest.log; previous files follow the pattern yyyy-mm-dd_number.log.gz. For example, a filename with a date and a sequence number identifies an older session, while .gz indicates gzip compression.
Use the newest dated file that covers the problem. A gzip-capable archive utility can open the file directly; alternatively, copy it before extracting so the original remains unchanged. Do not rename a compressed file to remove .gz and expect it to become ordinary text. Once decompressed, open the resulting log in a text editor and preserve its original contents when sharing.
Read a log without getting lost
A client log can contain thousands of lines. The following method narrows it to evidence instead of guessing from the last red line.
1. Verify the session and versions
Look near the beginning for the startup timestamp and the Minecraft and mod-loader versions. Confirm that the file was created during the failed launch or affected play session. If the timestamp is wrong, find the matching rotated log or reproduce the issue and create a fresh one.
2. Search for high-value markers
Use the editor’s Find command to search for ERROR, Exception, Caused by:, Crash, and the ID of a suspected mod. Also search for distinctive text from the launcher or the in-game message. A warning is not automatically the cause: many warnings are harmless compatibility notices that appear during a successful launch.

3. Find the first meaningful exception
Logs often show a cascade after one component fails. The first meaningful exception usually identifies the initial break, while later messages report consequences such as a missing registry entry or an aborted reload. Within that exception, follow the deepest Caused by: line. Record the complete exception text and the first lines naming a mod, resource, file, or operation.
4. Compare the configuration
Use the named mod, Java version, loader version, and Minecraft version to check the intended setup. A dependency error may mean a required mod is absent; a version error may mean a mod was built for another Minecraft release; a Java error may indicate that the launcher selected an incompatible runtime. The log provides clues, but it does not prove that the last named mod is solely responsible: that mod may be the first component to expose an earlier incompatibility.
5. Check the surrounding context
Read several dozen lines before and after the key exception. The preceding lines can show which file was being loaded, which dimension or resource pack was active, or which network operation failed. The following lines can show whether the launcher retried, disabled a feature, or stopped initialization. Cutting the context down to one red line can remove the information a maintainer needs.

Diagnose common failure patterns
The game crashes during startup
Open the newest client crash report first. Read the stack trace and its deepest Caused by: entry, then compare the listed mod and versions with the instance configuration. If no report exists, use latest.log or Forge’s debug.log and search from the first startup error forward.
The launcher opens, but Minecraft closes immediately
Check latest.log for the last completed initialization step and for Java or memory messages. Also inspect the launcher-selected Java version in the report’s system details when a crash report exists. If the process terminated without a Minecraft report, look for hs_err_pidXXXXX.log in the game directory; that pattern indicates a fatal JVM error rather than an ordinary in-game exception.
The game freezes or stops responding
Save latest.log before launching again, because a new session may replace it. Look at the final timestamped lines and the operation that was active when logging stopped. A freeze may not produce a crash report, so the last section of the client log is often the only record available.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
A server connection fails
Use the client log from the same connection attempt. Search for the server address only if you are comfortable sharing it, then examine authentication, timeout, protocol, or disconnect exceptions and the lines immediately around them. A server administrator may separately need the server’s own log; a client log cannot replace that server-side evidence.

Search for the pack name, resource path, Exception, and Caused by:. Note whether the failure occurs during startup or during a resource reload. Include the relevant preceding lines so the recipient can see which asset was being parsed and which Minecraft version performed the reload.
Share a log safely and usefully
Keep the original formatting and upload the complete relevant file to a paste service rather than posting a screenshot or a handful of selected lines. Fabric’s player troubleshooting guidance lists mclo.gs, pastes.dev, Pastebin.com, and GitHub Gist as examples of services that can host logs. Send the resulting link with the exact Minecraft version, loader, launcher or instance name, operating system, Java version if known, and a short description of what you did immediately before the failure.
Before publishing, inspect the file for information you do not want to disclose, such as a server address, local username, file paths, or account-related tokens. Remove only genuinely sensitive values, and mark where a redaction was made. Do not delete surrounding lines, timestamps, exception names, or stack-trace structure. A helper needs enough context to distinguish the original error from a later cascade.
A repeatable log-gathering checklist
- Reproduce the problem once and note the time.
- Open the correct official game directory or the affected instance’s folder.
- Choose
latest.log, Forgedebug.log, the matchingcrash-reportsfile, or anhs_err_pidXXXXX.logfile according to the failure type. - Confirm the timestamp, Minecraft version, loader version, and Java details.
- Search for
ERROR,Exception,Caused by:,Crash, and relevant mod IDs. - Read the first meaningful exception and deepest cause together with nearby context.
- Compare every named component with the configuration you intended to use.
- Preserve the original file and share the complete relevant log after checking for sensitive data.
What to send when asking for help
A useful support request identifies the exact instance and failure, not just the fact that Minecraft “doesn’t work.” State whether the game reached the title screen, whether it displayed a crash screen, and whether a new crash report appeared. Include the operating system, Minecraft version, loader and loader version, Java version when available, and the path or filename you used. Then provide the full log or crash-report link and point out the timestamp of the reproduction.
This combination lets a reader distinguish a normal runtime warning from the first fatal exception, match the report to the intended configuration, and tell whether the problem is in Minecraft, a mod loader, a particular mod, Java, or the launcher instance itself.
