treat an AI summary as a lead, not proof. Open the citation attached to the exact claim, find the passage that supposedly supports it, and check the wording, scope, date, publisher and caveats yourself. For important claims, compare another independent source and, when possible, the underlying study, official record, dataset or original reporting.
AI systems can omit sources, link to a related page instead of the evidence, or produce incorrect and even fabricated citations. The workflow below shows how to test a citation, recover an original source when a summary points only to a secondary page, and document uncertainty when no reliable source can be found.
Why an AI citation is a lead rather than proof
A link proves only that a page was attached to an answer. It does not prove that the page makes the claim the summary attributes to it. A source may discuss a similar topic while differing in population, date, units, jurisdiction, conditions or conclusion. A search snippet or headline can also omit a qualification that changes the meaning.
OpenAI advises readers to check whether a cited source actually supports the answer, review its publication or update date, and use an authoritative source when accuracy matters. Its help guidance also warns that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect: Searching the Web with ChatGPT. A separate OpenAI explanation notes that fabricated quotes, studies, citations and references can occur, so quotations, data and references should be verified by visiting the links directly: Does ChatGPT tell the truth?

That distinction gives you a practical standard: the source must support the exact statement, under the same conditions, with a traceable origin. If you cannot establish that, describe the statement as unverified instead of presenting the citation as confirmation.
How do I find the original source behind an AI summary?
1. Split the summary into individual claims
Do not fact-check a compound paragraph as one unit. Rewrite it as separate statements, each of which could be true or false on its own. Mark claims that contain:
- Specific names, organizations, places or dates.
- Numbers, percentages, prices, measurements or rankings.
- Quotation marks or wording attributed to a person or institution.
- Cause-and-effect language such as “led to,” “prevents” or “proves.”
- Advice, recommendations or instructions that depend on a particular version, jurisdiction or situation.
This creates a checkable list. A single citation may support one sentence but not every assertion in the paragraph. Keep the original wording beside your rewritten claims so you can detect exaggeration or a change in scope.

Use the link nearest to the sentence you are checking, rather than a general source list. In ChatGPT, selecting a citation opens its source; the Sources control, when available, can show cited sources and related links. In Gemini, sources can appear through a Sources button at the bottom or as inline links. Google says some Gemini responses have no source links at all; when there is no Sources button, Gemini did not provide links for that response. The controls and labels can change as these products are updated.
Google AI Overviews can also be wrong. Google’s guidance recommends clicking the web links, checking important information in more than one place, trying other Search results and asking the question in more than one way. The Web filter displays text links without features such as AI Overviews. See Google’s AI Overviews help for the current interface and availability notes.
3. Read the cited page, not only its headline or snippet
Use the browser’s find function for the distinctive name, number or phrase in the claim, then read several paragraphs around the match. You are looking for the passage that supplies the evidence, not merely a page that mentions the same subject.
Ask these questions while reading:
- Does the page state the same proposition, or only a related one?
- Does it use the same population, sample, location, time period, units and definitions?
- Are conditions, exceptions, confidence limits or other caveats omitted from the summary?
- Is the statement a measured result, an opinion, a forecast, a policy proposal or a marketing claim?
- Does the cited page itself identify an earlier study, official record or original report?
If the page says “may be associated with” and the AI says “causes,” the citation does not support the stronger wording. If a statistic applies to one year or subgroup, do not silently generalize it to everyone or every year.

4. Check provenance and dates
Identify the publisher, author, organization and document type. Then check both the original publication date and any update date. A current article may summarize an old study; an undated page may no longer describe the product or rule you are researching.

Prefer the source closest to the evidence for the question at hand:
- A peer-reviewed paper or its preprint for a research finding.
- An official dataset, methodology note or statistical release for a number.
- A regulator, court, standards body or government document for a rule or decision.
- An organization’s original statement, filing or technical documentation for what it announced or built.
- Original reporting for an event, while checking the reporter’s named documents and sources.
Authority is subject-specific. A government health agency may be authoritative for a public-health recommendation, while a standards body or vendor’s technical documentation may be more appropriate for an implementation detail. Record why the publisher is competent to make the particular claim, not just that the page looks professional.
5. Follow the citation chain to the underlying material
A secondary article often links to a study, dataset, transcript or official document. Open that earlier material and determine whether it really contains the evidence. If a page says “a study found” without naming the study, search the distinctive wording, author, title, date or number in quotation marks. Search results can reveal a title, DOI, docket number or dataset identifier that lets you locate the original.
When you find several versions, compare them. A press release may simplify a result that is qualified in the paper; a news article may quote a preliminary finding that was later revised; a repost may omit tables or corrections. Preserve the original document’s date and version in your notes.
6. Cross-check consequential claims
For claims that could affect health, safety, money, legal rights, employment, privacy or publication, do not stop at one page. Search the key wording, named entities and distinctive numbers, then compare an independent result. Google’s guidance specifically recommends checking important information in more than one place, following supporting web links and trying other Search results.
Independent corroboration means more than two pages copying the same press release. Prefer sources with different publication paths or direct access to the underlying evidence. If every article traces back to one unverified assertion, you have repetition, not confirmation.
7. Verify quotations and numbers exactly
For a quotation, compare the words character-for-character with the source and check who said them, when, and in what context. Ellipses, translated wording and excerpts can change a statement’s meaning. If the exact words cannot be located, do not use quotation marks; describe the idea as a paraphrase only if the source clearly supports it.

8. Record what remains uncertain
Use a simple evidence note for each claim:
- Write the claim in one sentence.
- Paste the exact source URL and document title.
- Quote or summarize the supporting passage with its page, section or timestamp when available.
- List differences in scope, date, population, units or certainty.
- Label the result as supported, partially supported, contradicted or unverified.
This prevents a citation that looked convincing at first glance from being treated as proof later.
How do I check if an AI citation is real?
Check that the URL resolves to a genuine page and that the page actually exists in the stated form. Then confirm that the page identifies a real publisher, author or institution and contains the cited material. A plausible-looking title or URL is not evidence by itself.
Search for the document title, quoted passage or distinctive number independently. If the alleged study, report or quote cannot be found anywhere except the AI response, treat it as unverified. OpenAI’s guidance on truthfulness specifically calls for visiting links directly to verify quotes, data and references because AI systems can fabricate them: Does ChatGPT tell the truth?
Check for signs of a mismatch:
- The linked page has a different title, date or author than the AI described.
- The page contains no occurrence of the quoted phrase or number.
- The source discusses a different country, product version, age group or time period.
- The AI attributes a claim to a study, but the page is only a commentary about that study.
- The URL redirects to a generic homepage, login screen or unrelated article.
A valid URL can still be a bad citation. “Real” should mean both that the page exists and that it supports the claim at the required level of precision.
How can I tell whether an AI summary’s sources support its claims?
Use six comparison axes for every serious source:

| Proximity to evidence | Is it the original study, dataset, ruling, standard, statement or reporting, or a page repeating someone else? |
| Expertise and authority | Is the publisher qualified and accountable for this subject? |
| Recency | When was it published or updated, and does that date fit the claim? |
| Scope and caveats | Are methods, assumptions, limitations, definitions and exceptions disclosed? |
| Independent corroboration | Does another source with a separate publication path agree? |
These axes help distinguish a direct answer from a merely adjacent page. A source can be authoritative yet outdated, recent yet non-authoritative, or direct but too narrow for the summary’s broad wording. Explain the specific limitation instead of giving the page an all-purpose “reliable” label.
What should I do when an AI answer has no sources?
Do not assume that no links means no evidence exists. Search the claim independently using its most distinctive wording, names, dates and numbers. Add terms that identify the likely evidence type, such as “official report,” “dataset,” “court decision,” “technical documentation” or “study.”
Start with the original material if you can identify it. If you find only secondary accounts, say so and describe what they establish. If a primary source cannot be located, mark the claim unverified rather than inventing a citation or implying that the AI supplied one.

How to recover an original source from a secondary page
When the page names a study or document
- Copy the full title, author names, publication year and any DOI, report number or dataset identifier.
- Search that exact combination and open the publisher, repository or official archive.
- Compare the original abstract, methods, tables and conclusion with the AI’s wording.
- Check whether the cited version is preliminary, corrected, retracted, superseded or limited to a particular sample.
When the page gives only a vague attribution
Search a distinctive sentence in quotation marks, then remove words one at a time if the wording was paraphrased. Add a named organization, date range or number. Search the organization’s own site and relevant public databases. A result that repeats the same unattributed sentence does not establish its origin.
When several originals appear
Choose the earliest authoritative document that directly contains the evidence, but keep later corrections or updates in view. For a statistic, the original release may be best for the number while a later methodology note explains a revision. Cite both only when each contributes a distinct fact.

An image can be authentic while its caption is false, or an old image can be presented as a current event. Google’s described tools include About this image, which can show available history, other uses or context and metadata, and Fact Check Explorer for existing fact checks. These tools provide context; they do not independently prove every claim attached to an image. See Google’s image and source-checking features.
Check the image separately from the surrounding text:
- Run a reverse-image or image-context search and inspect the earliest credible uses.
- Compare dates, location, weather, signs, uniforms and other visible clues with the caption.
- Look for an original photographer, agency, archive or official release.
- Check whether metadata is available, while remembering that metadata can be removed or altered.
- Search Fact Check Explorer for an existing claim review, then read the cited evidence rather than relying on the label alone.
Google’s post cites a 2023 Poynter Institute MediaWise study in which seven in ten respondents said they were not “totally or very confident” in their ability to tell whether online images were authentic and reliable. That statistic describes confidence about image authenticity, not the accuracy of AI summaries or their citations.
Common failure modes and the correct fix
The link supports a weaker claim
Symptom: The source says “may,” “is associated with” or “in this sample,” while the summary says “will,” “causes” or “everyone.”

The citation is real but outdated
Symptom: A product screen, policy, law or statistic has changed since the cited page was published.
Fix: Check the update date and locate the current official documentation or release. State the date and version whenever the fact is time-sensitive.
Several pages repeat one unsupported assertion
Symptom: Search results look numerous, but every page cites the same press release or unattributed sentence.

A quotation cannot be found
Symptom: The wording appears only in the AI answer or in pages that copy it.
Fix: Remove quotation marks, search for a documented paraphrase, and label the statement unverified if the original words remain unavailable.
The AI supplies no source
Symptom: There is no citation, Sources button or linked document.
Fix: Search independently, identify the original material if possible, and disclose the absence of a source when you report the result.
Using AI-assisted research in published work
AI can help generate search terms, summarize a document or suggest leads, but the publisher remains responsible for checking accuracy and trustworthiness. Google Search Central advises manual fact-checking and review of AI-generated material before publication: Google Search’s guidance on generative AI content. This is publisher guidance, not a universal legal rule.
For an article, report or technical decision, keep an audit trail containing the claim, source URL, access date, relevant passage, version and your assessment. Do not cite the AI response as the evidence when the underlying source is available. If the source is inaccessible, ambiguous or contradictory, explain that limitation and avoid a more confident conclusion than the evidence permits.
A printable checklist for every AI summary
- Have I separated the summary into individual factual claims?
- Did I open the citation attached to the exact claim?
- Did I read the relevant passage rather than only the headline or snippet?
- Does the source match the claim’s wording, scope, date, population, units and certainty?
- Who published it, and why are they authoritative for this subject?
- Is there an earlier study, official record, dataset, standard or original report?
- Did I compare an independent source for any consequential claim?
- Did I verify quotations character-for-character and statistics with their year and denominator?
- If no source was supplied, did I search independently and label the result honestly?
- Have I recorded what is supported, partially supported, contradicted or still unverified?
The reliable habit is simple: follow the link, read the evidence, trace it to its origin, compare important claims and preserve the source’s qualifications. When that chain breaks, the correct conclusion is not that the AI is right or wrong by default; it is that the claim needs more verification.
