On a PS5, the official way to play many PS1 and PS2-era games is through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus, choose Benefits, and select Classics Catalog. In the US plan information, the catalog is a Premium benefit. When a game is eligible for your account and region, its page shows Download, Stream, or both.
The catalog is not a permanent, universal list of every PS1 or PS2 release. Games, plans, and streaming availability vary by country and can change over time, so verify the specific title in the live catalog before subscribing or planning to play.
What you can play on PS5
PlayStation Plus presents selected older games in a digital Classics Catalog. The catalog can include games associated with the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 generations, but it is a curated service library rather than a complete archive. A title must be listed in the catalog for your country and included with your membership plan before you can use this route.

What the catalog does not mean
- It does not guarantee that every PS1 or PS2 game is available.
- It does not guarantee that a title available in one country appears in another.
- It does not give permanent ownership of a catalog game. PlayStation notes that catalog titles can have end dates and that availability varies by time and plan.
- It does not establish that an original PS1 or PS2 disc will work in a PS5. The official catalog instructions describe digital catalog access, not disc compatibility.
Which PlayStation Plus plan includes the Classics Catalog?
In the US plan comparison used for this guide, the Classics Catalog is listed as a Premium benefit. Extra includes the Game Catalog but is not listed as including the Classics Catalog. Plan names, benefits, prices, and availability can differ by country, so use the PlayStation Plus plan information for your account’s region before paying.

Find the Classics Catalog on your PS5
The PS5 navigation supplied by PlayStation is short, but the labels are easy to miss if you start from the store search screen. Follow this path:

- Scroll to and select PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits area.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Browse the catalog or use the available search and filters to locate the game you want.
If Classics Catalog is not shown, check that you are signed in to the account with the qualifying membership, that the console is connected to the internet, and that the account’s country is the one you intended to use. A catalog page from another country or a different account can show different results.

Check a game before committing to it
Open the game’s catalog listing and inspect the action buttons and availability information. The listing is the authoritative check for your account at that moment. Confirm all of the following before you start a download or stream:
- The title is actually listed under Classics Catalog, not merely mentioned in a search result or a user-created list.
- Your current PlayStation Plus tier is accepted for that listing.
- The page offers Download, Stream, or both.
- The title is available in your country and has not reached an announced removal date.
Download a classic game to the PS5
Downloading installs the eligible catalog version on the console, so you do not have to maintain a continuous streaming connection while playing. Use the exact procedure below:
- Open Games home, then PlayStation Plus, Benefits, and Classics Catalog.
- Select the game’s listing.
- Choose Download.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then launch the game from the PS5 game home or your library.
The Download button appears only when the title and your membership support that option. If you see only Stream, do not infer that the download is temporarily broken; the catalog listing may be defining streaming as the available method for that item.
What downloading changes
- You need enough free console storage for the game and its installation data; the listing or the console’s download prompt is the place to check the required space.
- After installation, play does not depend on the same continuous bandwidth requirement as cloud streaming, although account and service checks can still apply.
- Downloading does not turn the title into a permanent purchase. If the title leaves the catalog or your qualifying membership ends, service access can end even if the files remain installed.
Stream a classic game from the catalog
Streaming starts the game on a remote PlayStation server and sends the video and audio to your PS5. It avoids waiting for a full installation and uses little local storage, but it is more sensitive to the quality of your broadband connection.

- Navigate to Games home, PlayStation Plus, Benefits, and Classics Catalog.
- Open an eligible game listing.
- Select Stream.
- Allow the service to establish the session, then play while the connection remains stable.
PlayStation’s support documentation states that streaming Classics Catalog games requires the correct membership plan and broadband of at least 5 Mbps. It lists 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those are service requirements, not a promise that every connection delivering that speed will feel identical; congestion, latency, Wi-Fi interference, and other traffic can still affect the session. PlayStation warns that resolution may drop when speed falls below the stated threshold.

Streaming restrictions to know before choosing Stream
PlayStation’s support page lists limitations for streamed Classics Catalog games. During a streaming session, you should not expect to use:
- Remote Play
- Share Play
- Share Screen
- Broadcasting
- Keyboard and mouse support
- PSVR
- PS Move
- Third-party controllers
These restrictions make downloading the better choice when you need one of those features, have limited or unstable broadband, or want to avoid the image-quality changes associated with cloud delivery. Streaming is more convenient when local storage is tight or you want to try a title without waiting for an installation, provided the listing offers it and your connection meets the service requirements.

Why a PS1 or PS2 game may not appear
The catalog is regional
Catalog availability is tied to country and can differ across PlayStation services. The cloud-streaming information also lists supported countries, so streaming eligibility is geographically limited. Use the PlayStation site and the catalog on the console for your own region instead of copying a title list from another country.

The catalog changes
PlayStation states that catalog availability varies over time and by plan. A game can be added, removed, or offered under a different access method. If an old article says a game is included, compare that claim with the live listing and any end-date notice now shown.
The title is not in the Classics Catalog
Not every older game has been released through the service. A missing listing is not evidence that your PS5 is malfunctioning, and catalog search cannot provide access to a game that PlayStation has not licensed for the service in your market.
Your account or membership does not qualify
A title can be visible while its action button remains unavailable because the signed-in account lacks the required plan. Confirm the account, country, and membership tier before troubleshooting the console itself.

PS1 and PS2 games are not the same as PS3 streaming titles
PlayStation’s US games page separately notes that a selection of classic PS3 games is available via streaming only. That statement applies to the PS3 portion of the service; it should not be used to conclude that every PS1 or PS2 title is stream-only. For a PS1 or PS2-era game, rely on the buttons shown on that specific listing: Download, Stream, or both.

Original discs and digital Classics Catalog games
The official material covering the Classics Catalog explains digital downloads and cloud streaming. It does not directly answer whether an original PS1 or PS2 disc can be inserted into a PS5 and played. Catalog availability should therefore not be treated as proof of disc compatibility.
If using original media is your deciding factor, look for an authoritative PS5 compatibility statement that explicitly names the disc format and console model. Until such a source confirms it, plan around the digital catalog route described here rather than buying or relying on an old disc.
A practical decision guide: download or stream?
Choose Download when
- The game page offers it and you have enough free storage.
- Your broadband is slow, shared, or prone to interruptions.
- You want to avoid streaming feature restrictions.
- You expect to replay the title during the period it remains in the catalog.
Choose Stream when
- The listing offers streaming and your country supports the service.
- You want to start quickly without installing the game.
- Storage is limited and your connection consistently meets the service requirement.
- You accept that image quality and responsiveness depend on network conditions and that the listed features are unavailable.
Verify before subscribing for one game
- Open the live Classics Catalog on the PS5.
- Search for the exact title and open its listing.
- Check the membership tier shown for access.
- Check whether Download, Stream, or both are offered.
- Look for regional or end-date information.
- Only then compare the current local membership cost with the amount of play time you expect to get.
Troubleshooting the most common access problems
The Classics Catalog menu is missing
- Return to the Games home screen and follow the full path: PlayStation Plus → Benefits → Classics Catalog.
- Confirm that the console is online and that you are signed in to the account holding the membership.
- Check the membership tier and country associated with that account.
- Use the current regional PlayStation site if the account is outside the US, because the cited navigation and plan information are US-specific.
The game is listed but Download or Stream is unavailable
- Read the listing’s membership requirement; visibility alone does not prove entitlement.
- Check whether the title is offered in your country and whether an end date has passed.
- Look for the other access method. Some games may offer Download but not Stream, or Stream but not Download.
- If the account and region are correct and the button is still unavailable, treat the listing’s current eligibility as the deciding information rather than an old catalog list.
Streaming is blurry or unstable
- Check the broadband connection against PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps 1080p figure.
- Stop other high-bandwidth activity on the same connection.
- If the speed falls below the service threshold, expect resolution to drop.
- Switch to Download when the listing provides it and you have enough storage.
You cannot use an accessory or sharing feature while streaming
First compare the feature with PlayStation’s restriction list. Remote Play, Share Play, Share Screen, broadcasting, keyboard and mouse, PSVR, PS Move, and third-party controllers are listed as unavailable for streaming. This is a service limitation, not necessarily a hardware fault. Download the title instead when that option is provided and the feature is important to you.
Keeping access expectations realistic
A catalog membership is an access license for the titles currently offered under the plan. It is different from purchasing a game outright. Before beginning a long playthrough, check the listing for any end-date notice and keep in mind that PlayStation can change the catalog by time, country, and plan. If a title leaves, an installed copy should not be treated as a permanent entitlement.
The safest workflow is to verify the exact game on your own PS5 immediately before playing: confirm the listing, plan, access method, and region. That single check prevents the most common surprises caused by outdated title lists and differences between countries.

Use Games home → PlayStation Plus → Benefits → Classics Catalog to find PS1 and PS2-era games on PS5. In the US information, Premium is the tier that includes the Classics Catalog.
