Start with the official developer or studio page, then follow its current platform link. That route separates released games from prototypes and confirms whether a title is a standalone game, a browser or mobile release, or a Māori-focused world inside a larger game. The clearest current examples are Toroa: Skycall, Adrenalin Games’ web and mobile titles, and Piki Studios’ Ngā Motu Minecraft experience.
What “Māori-made” means in this guide
“Māori-made” should describe Māori authorship, ownership or leadership supported by an official source. It is not interchangeable with “Māori-themed.” A game can include Māori characters or settings without being made by a Māori studio, while a Māori-led developer may make games whose stories are not exclusively about Māori life.
There are three useful categories:
- Māori-made or Māori-led: the developer identifies Māori ownership, leadership or authorship.
- New Zealand-made: created by a New Zealand developer or studio. This is a broader category and does not prove Māori authorship.
- Māori-content experience: a world, lesson or mode inside another game, such as a Minecraft world, rather than a separately sold title.
Use the developer’s own wording when describing a title. For example, Atawhai Interactive explicitly grounds Toroa: Skycall in te ao Māori, while Microsoft describes Ngā Motu as a te ao Māori version of Minecraft. Those descriptions do not mean the two products have the same format or access route.

How to play Toroa: Skycall
Toroa: Skycall is the strongest example of a conventional standalone Māori-grounded game in the available material. Atawhai Interactive’s press kit identifies it as the studio’s debut title and describes a flight adventure across the Pacific. The game’s story and dialogue use te reo Māori, and the soundtrack features taonga pūoro. Those are specific elements stated by the studio, not an inference from the setting.

These dates and platforms come from the studio’s press-kit information. Before buying or downloading, open the linked store listing and check that the edition is available in your region, that your operating system or console matches the requirements, and that the listing still describes the language and content you want.
What kind of game to expect
The studio presents it as a relaxing flight adventure rather than a competitive flight simulator. Expect exploration and movement through a Pacific setting, with cultural grounding expressed through the world, dialogue and music. Do not describe it as a documentary or as a complete survey of Māori culture; the source supports the game’s creative premise, not a claim that it represents every iwi or Māori experience.
How to play Adrenalin Games’ Māori-language titles
Adrenalin Games’ official site identifies the company as a Māori game maker and describes two different types of play.

Māori Pā Wars
Māori Pā Wars is described as a tower-defense game with both English and te reo Māori options. The developer says it can be played on its website and on Android and iOS.
- Open the current Adrenalin Games website.
- Choose the Māori Pā Wars game or play link shown there.
- For a phone or tablet, use the Android or iOS store link supplied by the developer rather than an old third-party download page.
- Check the store publisher name, supported operating-system version and recent update date before installing.
- Use the in-game language setting, if shown, to select English or te reo Māori.
The website and mobile availability are developer claims. App listings, permissions and regional availability can change, so confirm the live listing at the time you play.

Tahi Two
Adrenalin describes Tahi Two as a matching game designed to build Māori vocabulary and knowledge. The available description does not establish a permanent platform list or current store URL. Find it through the studio’s current site and treat any old screenshot, social post or app-store result without a matching developer link as unverified.
Because this is a vocabulary and knowledge game, it may be useful for a learner or whānau activity, but the description does not establish a formal curriculum, assessment or educational accreditation. Use it as a game unless the developer supplies additional teaching information.
How to access Ngā Motu in Minecraft
Ngā Motu is not an independently sold game. Microsoft’s New Zealand News Centre reported on August 29, 2024 that Piki Studios developed it in 2019 as a te ao Māori version of Minecraft. The described environment includes a Māori pā, kumara pits and waka; characters introduce Māori concepts and vocabulary.
That distinction matters when you search for it: you need access to Minecraft first, then the current route to the Ngā Motu world or experience. The Microsoft article does not supply a current direct installation link, so avoid copying an old step-by-step marketplace URL or promising that every Minecraft edition includes it.
- Confirm that you have a supported Minecraft edition and an account that can access worlds or marketplace content.
- Look for a current Ngā Motu listing through the in-game marketplace or a link published by Piki Studios or Minecraft.
- Read the listing carefully to see whether it is free, requires a purchase, is limited to a particular edition, or has been removed or replaced.
- Install or open the world from the official interface, then check that the title and creator match the listing before launching it.
If you cannot find the world, the absence of a result does not prove that it never existed. It may be unavailable in your edition or region, renamed, or no longer listed. In that situation, rely on a current creator or platform notice rather than an archived guide.

A cultural purpose described by the developer
“The purpose of these projects is to show how connected we are as people, on this big blue continent.”

Microsoft attributes that statement to Whetu Paitai, a developer associated with Piki Studios, in its August 29, 2024 article. It explains the project’s intent; it is not evidence that every player will encounter the same content in every Minecraft version.
Studios to follow when a game is not yet publicly playable
Official studio pages are valuable discovery sources, but a studio profile is not a release catalogue. A project may be an early concept, prototype, commissioned work or in-development title.
Metia Interactive
Metia Interactive is an Auckland studio founded in 2003 by managing director Maru Nihoniho. Its site says it creates games that combine universal themes with representations of Māori culture and identifies Cube and SPARX among its work. The site describes SPARX as a free online self-help e-therapy tool. That label does not establish that it is a treatment, that it is clinically validated, or that it is appropriate for a particular health need.
Use Metia’s site to understand the studio’s work and follow current project links. Do not assume that every title named on the site is a downloadable entertainment game today.

Tumeke Studio
Tumeke Studio’s About page describes the company as Māori-owned and Māori-led. It says Edward Stanaway founded the studio in 2025 and identifies Errata as the first step in its longer creative direction. Unless an official current release page confirms a playable build, treat Errata as a project to follow, not as a game you can necessarily download.
Hanga Maken Studio
Hanga Maken Studio’s About page describes a Wellington team focused on representation in games and prototypes, with Māori and Pasifika storytelling interests. At the time that page was reviewed, it said the team was developing its first commercial project. That status can change, so look for a current release announcement before calling one of its projects publicly playable.
A reliable search method for Māori-made games
Search results and social posts can mix released products with pitch material. Use this six-step check whenever you discover a title.
- Find the official developer or studio domain. Prefer a press kit, About page or game page controlled by the maker.
- Confirm authorship language. Look for Māori-owned, Māori-led, Māori developer or an explicit statement about who made the game. If the source only says “inspired by” or “set in,” use that narrower description.
- Identify the product format. Decide whether it is a PC or console game, browser game, mobile app, Minecraft world, prototype or service.
- Follow the current platform link. A store button on the official page is stronger evidence than a search snippet or an old review.
- Check release status and date. “In development,” “prototype,” “coming soon” and “available now” have different meanings. Record the date shown by the developer.
- Verify before recommending it. Check region, edition, operating-system support, language options, age rating, price and whether the link still opens.
How to report uncertain availability
Use precise wording such as “the developer says it is available on Android and iOS; check the current listings” or “the studio describes this as in development.” Do not convert a historical announcement into a current release claim. This is especially important for mobile apps and Minecraft content, where listings and access routes can change without an old article being updated.

What the participation figures do—and do not—show
Manatū Taonga’s Cultural Participation Report 2025, based on a Verian survey, found that 14% of Māori respondents and 8% of non-Māori respondents had played a New Zealand video or computer game in the previous three months. The report defines a New Zealand game as one created by a New Zealand developer or studio.

Those figures measure participation in New Zealand-made games generally, not Māori-made games specifically. They cannot tell you how many respondents played a Māori-authored title, which genres they chose, or whether they used a PC, console, browser or phone. Use the statistic as context for interest in local game development, not as a market-size claim about Māori-made games.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Mistake: treating every New Zealand game as Māori-made. Fix: verify Māori authorship or leadership on the developer’s own page.
- Mistake: presenting a Minecraft world as a standalone purchase. Fix: state that Ngā Motu is an experience inside Minecraft and explain the need for Minecraft access.
- Mistake: calling a prototype a released game. Fix: preserve the studio’s status wording and look for a current store or download page.
- Mistake: assuming a mobile app is still listed. Fix: follow the developer’s current link and check the platform listing, publisher and update information.
- Mistake: overstating cultural coverage. Fix: describe the specific features documented by the maker—such as te reo Māori dialogue, vocabulary or taonga pūoro—without claiming to represent all Māori communities.
- Mistake: copying an old access guide. Fix: recheck dates, regions, editions and store pages immediately before recommending a download.
Respectful recommendations
Use correct macrons in names such as Māori, te reo Māori, Ngā Motu and Pā. Explain what a game actually includes instead of treating cultural references as decoration. If a game offers te reo Māori, mention that as a developer-stated option; do not infer language quality, fluency level or educational value without evidence.
When sharing a title, link to the creator’s page first. That gives readers the best chance of reaching the current store, app or project information and gives the studio control over updates. For titles without a current playable link, recommend following the studio rather than implying that readers can download them now.
