The fastest way to play Nintendo’s retro catalog is to download the appropriate Nintendo Switch Online library app. On an original Switch, open Nintendo eShop, choose the user with the qualifying membership, select Nintendo Switch Online in the left menu, choose a library, and select Free Download twice. On Switch 2, use the Nintendo Switch Online entry on the HOME Menu, open Nintendo Classics, choose a library, select its console icon, and confirm Free Download twice. Launch the downloaded app from the HOME Menu and select a game.

What you need before downloading

Classic games are supplied through Nintendo Switch Online library applications rather than as one large cartridge-style collection. You need an internet connection for the initial access and download process, and the Nintendo Switch Online membership must be active for the library you want to use.

Think of the download as installing a catalog app, not buying a permanent copy of every game in it. The app can stay on your HOME Menu, but access is tied to the qualifying Nintendo Switch Online membership. If that membership ends, the software is not converted into a purchased collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before opening the store, identify the Nintendo Account user who actually has the membership. On a console with several profiles, choosing an account without the subscription can make an eligible library look unavailable. Also check the console model and region, because those determine whether particular libraries appear at all.

Standard Nintendo Switch Online NES, Super NES, and Game Boy The membership has to remain active for continued access.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Everything in the standard membership, plus Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy Virtual Boy is limited to the United States and Canada and does not appear on Switch Lite.
Expansion Pack on Nintendo Switch 2 Everything listed above, plus Nintendo GameCube Classics GameCube Classics is playable only on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo describes the NES and Super NES collections together as more than 100 games on product pages reviewed in 2026. That is a combined figure for those two libraries, not a count of every classic game available through all membership tiers. Nintendo also adds games over time, so no catalog should be treated as permanently fixed.

How to download a classic library on Nintendo Switch

Use this route on the original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite. The menus may show only libraries that match your membership and region.

  1. Connect the console to the internet. A connection is needed to open the relevant store listing and download the application.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
  3. Select the user account with the active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Choosing a different profile can make an otherwise eligible library appear unavailable.
  4. Scroll down the left side of eShop and select Nintendo Switch Online.
  5. Choose the library you want. Nintendo places standard-tier libraries in the Nintendo Switch Online area; Expansion Pack libraries are shown under the applicable Expansion Pack content or special-offer area.
  6. Select Free Download, then select Free Download again when the confirmation appears.
  7. Wait for the download to finish. The library appears as its own application on the HOME Menu.
  8. Open the library app and choose a game. The game starts from inside that library rather than from a separate purchase listing.

If a library does not appear, first verify the account selected in eShop, the membership tier, the console model, and the account’s region. Those checks explain most missing-library cases.

Each system is presented as its own application, so you can install only the libraries you expect to use. For example, installing NES and Game Boy does not automatically install Nintendo 64 or Game Boy Advance; those are separate Expansion Pack libraries. Keeping unneeded apps off the HOME Menu also makes it easier to find the systems you play regularly.

How to download a classic library on Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo documents a separate HOME Menu route for Switch 2:

  1. Select Nintendo Switch Online from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Nintendo Classics.
  3. Choose the classic library you want to install.
  4. Select the console icon associated with that library.
  5. Select Free Download twice to begin the installation.
  6. After installation, return to the HOME Menu, launch the library application, and select a game.

This route does not change the membership requirement. A user still needs an active membership of the appropriate type, and GameCube Classics remains a Switch 2-only option. If you are looking for GameCube on an original Switch, it will not become available by searching eShop; the hardware limitation is decisive.

Which classic library should you use?

Choose by the original system you want to revisit, then confirm that your membership, hardware, and region support it. The most useful comparison is not simply the number of games. Consider the subscription tier, the Switch model you own, where your Nintendo Account is registered, and whether you want solo, couch, or online play.

Library Membership needed Console and regional availability Play-style considerations
NES Standard Nintendo Switch Online Available through the standard library app on supported Switch consoles. Includes games that may support solo, local, or online play depending on the individual title.
Super NES Standard Nintendo Switch Online Available through the standard library app on supported Switch consoles. Check each game’s listing for its multiplayer capability.
Game Boy Standard Nintendo Switch Online Available through the standard library app on supported Switch consoles. The app includes display and play features described below.
Nintendo 64 Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Requires the expanded membership. Multiplayer support varies by game; online sessions use the library’s Play Online option.
SEGA Genesis Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Requires the expanded membership. Check the individual game for local or online multiplayer support.
Game Boy Advance Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Requires the expanded membership. Capabilities depend on the game and the library app.
Virtual Boy Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Available only in the United States and Canada; it will not appear on Switch Lite. Virtual Boy games do not include multiplayer.
GameCube Classics Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Playable only on Nintendo Switch 2. It is not an option on the original Switch family.

The standard membership is enough if your priority is Nintendo’s 8-bit and 16-bit console libraries or the Game Boy catalog. Expansion Pack is the relevant step when you specifically want N64, Genesis, Game Boy Advance, or Virtual Boy. GameCube is an additional hardware check: even with Expansion Pack, it requires Switch 2.

  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

Catalog contents can change as Nintendo adds titles. Treat the library names as the stable way to choose an app, but check the current in-app list when you are looking for a particular game. Nintendo’s “more than 100” figure applies only to NES and Super NES together, so it should not be read as the size of the entire Nintendo Switch Online classic lineup.

Start a game and use multiplayer

Launch a single-player game

Open the relevant library application from the HOME Menu, browse its game list, and select a title. The game runs inside the library app, so leave the app installed if you want to return to it later. You do not need to find a second eShop product page for each individual title.

Use local multiplayer

Some classic games support more than one player on the same console, but this is determined by the individual game. Open the game’s information or start screen in the library and check the players or multiplayer indication before arranging controllers. Do not assume that every title in a system library supports local play, even when the original console was associated with multiplayer games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Play online with friends

For a supported title, open the classic library software and select Play Online. Nintendo’s support instructions specify that online sessions are for people added as friends, so the people you want to invite need to be on your Nintendo Switch friends list. The game itself must also support online play; the membership does not add online multiplayer to a title that was designed only for one player.

Online capability is therefore a three-part check: the library app must be installed, the specific game must support the mode, and the people joining must be Nintendo Switch friends. If any one of those conditions is missing, the Play Online flow may not produce the session you expect.

Virtual Boy limitation

Virtual Boy games do not include multiplayer. If you are choosing a library specifically for two-player sessions, select a different system and verify the individual game’s support first.

Game Boy app features

Nintendo’s Game Boy library page describes several features for that library:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Suspend points: save the current position so you can return to it later.
  • Rewind: move back through recent gameplay to retry a difficult section.
  • Screen styles: choose Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, or Game Boy Color display styles.

These are features described for the Game Boy library. They should not be treated as universal controls available in every classic library or every individual game. If a feature matters to you, look for it in the specific library before assuming that another system’s app offers the same options.

Do you need a special controller?

No. Nintendo explicitly says its wireless NES controller two-pack is optional and is not required to play the NES Classics collection. The accessory is aimed at players who want a control layout that resembles the original NES, but the standard controllers you already use with Switch can be used instead of buying it.

Nintendo’s page identifies the two-pack for eligible Nintendo Switch Online members. The information here does not establish current stock, regional availability, third-party controller compatibility, or marketplace pricing, so check those details separately if you are shopping for an accessory. Compare the controller style with the library and game you plan to play: an NES-style pad may suit NES games, while it is not a requirement for accessing the catalog.

Internet access, membership checks, and continued play

Internet access is required for the access and download process. Nintendo also notes that the console may need to connect periodically to validate membership status. Nintendo’s instructions do not specify a guaranteed offline grace period, so do not rely on a particular number of days without an internet check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Access is tied to an active membership of the appropriate type. If the membership expires, the downloaded application may remain on the HOME Menu, but continued access to its classic games requires the membership to become active again. The library download is therefore not the same as purchasing each game permanently.

This distinction matters when planning travel or using a console away from a reliable connection. Download the app while connected, keep the correct Nintendo Account selected, and understand that Nintendo may request another connection to confirm eligibility. There is no documented promise that a library will remain playable indefinitely offline.

Troubleshoot a missing library or failed download

The library is not listed in eShop

  • Close eShop and reopen it with the Nintendo Account user whose membership is active.
  • Confirm that the membership tier covers the library. NES, Super NES, and Game Boy use the standard tier; Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube Classics require Expansion Pack.
  • Check hardware restrictions. GameCube Classics requires Switch 2, and Virtual Boy is not shown on Switch Lite.
  • Check the account’s region. Virtual Boy is limited to the United States and Canada.
  • On Switch 2, use the HOME Menu’s Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Classics path instead of searching the original-Switch eShop route.

The download button is not free

Recheck the selected user and membership status. The library applications are delivered through the qualifying Nintendo Switch Online access route; selecting a normal game listing or an account without the required membership can show a different purchase flow. Also make sure you selected the library app, not an individual game sold separately elsewhere in eShop.

The app downloaded but a game will not open

  • Connect the console to the internet so Nintendo can verify the membership.
  • Confirm that the membership is still active and is the correct tier for the library.
  • Restart the library application from the HOME Menu and try again.
  • If the problem affects only one game, check that title’s own support for the relevant mode rather than assuming the entire library is unavailable.

Online play will not start

Open the library app and use Play Online, then confirm that the game supports online play and that the intended players are added as Nintendo Switch friends. A title with local-only multiplayer cannot be made online through the library menu. Virtual Boy titles are a separate case because Nintendo says they do not include multiplayer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find Virtual Boy

Virtual Boy is restricted to the United States and Canada and does not appear on Switch Lite. Confirm both conditions before treating its absence as a store error. A compatible region alone is not enough if the console is a Switch Lite.

A practical way to choose what to install first

  1. Start with the original console. Pick NES, Super NES, or Game Boy if you have the standard membership; select one of the Expansion Pack systems if you specifically want N64, Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, or GameCube.
  2. Check your hardware. Switch 2 is required for GameCube Classics, while Virtual Boy is unavailable on Switch Lite.
  3. Check your region. Virtual Boy is offered only in the United States and Canada.
  4. Decide how you will play. For solo play, any supported title is suitable. For couch or online multiplayer, verify the game’s player modes; for online sessions, make sure participants are Nintendo Switch friends.
  5. Choose controls. Use your existing controllers unless you specifically want Nintendo’s optional wireless NES two-pack for a period-style layout.
  6. Install only the libraries you need. Each system is a separate application, so selecting the systems you actually plan to play keeps the HOME Menu easier to navigate.
  7. Plan for membership checks. Keep the subscription active and connect periodically when Nintendo requests validation, especially before relying on the library away from home.

Quick reference: the complete access path

Console Menu path Final action
Nintendo Switch family HOME Menu → Nintendo eShop → select the qualifying user → Nintendo Switch Online → choose the library under the relevant library or Expansion Pack area Select Free Download twice, then launch the new app from HOME.
Nintendo Switch 2 HOME Menu → Nintendo Switch Online → Nintendo Classics → choose the library → select the console icon Select Free Download twice, then launch the new app from HOME.

Once the correct library is installed, the process is simply to open its app, choose a game, and use the controls and multiplayer options that the individual title supports. If something is missing, check membership, account, hardware, region, and internet validation in that order.

You need internet access to access and download the library, and Nintendo may require periodic connections to validate membership. Nintendo does not specify a guaranteed offline grace period.

Can I play classic games online with friends?

Supported titles can use the library app’s Play Online option. The game must support online play, and the people joining must be added as Nintendo Switch friends.
