Start with the sequel’s official store page, then work backward through its developer, publisher, franchise, and related-game information. Confirm the earlier title on the developer’s own site, find an exact-title listing on a legitimate store, and check that you are buying the base game rather than downloadable content, a soundtrack, an expansion, or a bundle. Only after that should you decide whether the story requires release order.

A sequel label does not, by itself, prove that the original must be played first. Release chronology, the developer’s recommended narrative order, current availability, platform support, and the exact edition you are considering are separate questions.

Begin with the sequel’s official listing

The sequel is usually the most reliable starting point because its official product page identifies the people and series connected to it. Open the listing published by the developer or the authorized storefront page, not an unsourced fan list or a search result that may combine similarly named games.

Record the developer and publisher

Write down the developer’s exact name and, where shown, the publisher. Names can change, and several studios may use similar words, so copy the spelling from the listing. These details become search terms for the earlier game and help you reject an unrelated title with a matching name.

Inspect franchise and related-game links

Look for a franchise hub, “more from this developer” section, related games, or links to other entries. Steam’s store-page documentation allows creators to highlight related games and franchises. Those links are useful leads, but treat them as a starting point rather than proof of story order or even proof that every linked title belongs to the same continuity.

Check the sequel’s description for chronology clues

Read the short description, full description, announcements, and developer-written notes. Terms such as “prequel,” “standalone sequel,” “remake,” “spin-off,” or “new chapter” can change what “original” means. A remake may be the first release in a series but not the first version of the story; a spin-off may share a world without being a required entry.

Confirm the earlier title through the developer

Once you have a likely title, search the developer’s official website and any official series page. Confirm that the page identifies the game as an earlier entry, predecessor, or part of the same series. Prefer a page maintained by the studio over a retailer’s automatically generated franchise grouping.

Resolve similar titles and alternate editions

Indie games often have subtitles, remastered editions, ports, or later “complete” releases. Match the title, developer, characters, and series description rather than relying on one word in the name. If the studio lists multiple versions, note which one is the original release and which one is a later edition. The original story entry may be available only inside a collection, while a similarly named product may be a soundtrack or add-on.

Use release records when the order is disputed

Store pages can display dates in different ways. Steamworks documentation explains that developers can customize the player-facing date display separately from the exact date held in release planning. If two dates conflict, compare the developer’s announcement or another official release record instead of assuming the store’s visible date settles the question.

Search legitimate stores using the exact title

Search the likely original by its complete title, including punctuation and subtitle, on the developer’s site and on established storefronts such as Steam, itch.io, and GOG. itch.io describes itself as a service for finding and sharing indie games online. GOG’s Preservation Program focuses on keeping original games playable on modern machines. These services are discovery routes; their presence or absence does not establish availability for every particular game.

Check more than one storefront

A game may be sold on one store, distributed directly by its developer, or temporarily unavailable on another. A cross-store discoverability study comparing itch.io and Steam supports using multiple stores to find games, but similarity signals and storefront relationships do not prove that two games share a narrative or establish sequel order.

Verify the listing’s identity

Before selecting a purchase or download button, compare the store listing with the developer’s information:

  • Exact title and subtitle.
  • Developer and publisher names.
  • Series or franchise description.
  • Product type and included content.
  • Supported platform and stated system requirements.
  • Region in which the offer is available.
  • Edition or version name.

Availability is specific to the game, your country, the platform, and the date you check. A listing seen by another player may not be visible in your region or may support a different operating system.

Make sure you are buying the base game

The most common discovery mistake is finding a related product and assuming it is the original. Steam’s documentation distinguishes downloadable content from the base application and uses a special app type for soundtracks. A sequel page may also surface expansions, bundles, or promotional items beside the game itself.

Listing type What to verify Why it may not be the original game
Base game The product is identified as the main application and names the earlier entry you intend to play. This is the product you normally need for the original story.
Downloadable content Whether it requires ownership of another game. DLC adds content to a base application and may not run by itself.
Soundtrack Whether the listing is classified as a soundtrack or music product. A soundtrack contains audio, not the playable game.
Expansion The required base game and the content included. An expansion extends another game and is not necessarily the earlier entry.
Bundle The precise games included, rather than the bundle’s marketing name. A bundle may omit the title you want or combine it with unrelated products.
Sequel or spin-off The title, subtitle, and series position. A related product can appear in search results without being the original.

Open the specific product details before paying. Confirm the title, product type, included content, platform, and region on that page, even if the search result or bundle artwork looks correct.

Separate release order from story order

There are two different questions: which game was released first, and which order does the developer recommend for the story? They often match, but not always.

Release chronology

Use official release announcements, developer series pages, and store dates to establish chronology. If a date is disputed, remember that a storefront may display a customized player-facing date rather than the exact internal release record. State the region and platform when dates differ, because a PC release and a later console release are not the same event.

Recommended narrative order

Look for explicit guidance from the developer. A studio may call a game a sequel while designing it as a self-contained story, or may expect knowledge of the earlier entry. Do not infer the answer solely from numbering, cover art, or the word “sequel.”

An official example of a playable-first sequel

The Steam listing for Finding Paradise describes it this way: “This is To the Moon’s standalone sequel, but can also be played first.” That sentence is evidence about that specific game, not a rule for every indie series. It demonstrates why the developer’s own wording matters more than a generic assumption about sequels.

When the original is still the better first choice

Even when a sequel is technically standalone, the original may establish recurring characters, mechanics, terminology, or emotional context. If the developer recommends release order, follow it. If the developer says the sequel stands alone, choose based on your tolerance for references and spoilers, the original’s availability, and whether you want to experience the series’ evolution.

Compare your options before choosing where to play

Once you have identified the original, compare the actual offers you can access. Do not treat one store’s listing as universal evidence about every platform or country.

Decision factor Question to answer Where to verify
Story order Does the developer recommend the original first, or is the sequel explicitly standalone? Developer’s series guidance and the game’s official description.
Release chronology Which version and platform released first? Official announcements and release records; cross-check disputed store dates.
Regional availability Can your account purchase or download this listing in your country? The current store page for your account region.
Platform support Does the listing support your operating system or console? Current platform labels and system-requirements section.
Product identity Is it the base game rather than DLC, a soundtrack, an expansion, or a bundle? Product type and included-content details.
Edition and version Is this the original release, a remaster, a complete edition, or a port? Edition name, developer notes, and included-content list.

No general price, region, operating-system, or hardware recommendation can be made without the specific game and device. Those details can change, so check the current official listing immediately before purchase.

A repeatable workflow for finding the original

  1. Open the sequel’s official page. Use the developer’s or authorized store listing and copy the exact title.
  2. Record the creators. Note developer, publisher, franchise labels, and any related-game links.
  3. List candidate predecessors. Follow franchise metadata, then search the developer’s site for the series.
  4. Confirm the series relationship. Check that the developer identifies the candidate as an earlier entry, predecessor, or original.
  5. Search the exact title. Check the developer’s store and legitimate storefronts such as Steam, itch.io, and GOG.
  6. Open each candidate’s product details. Verify title, developer, product type, included content, platform, edition, and region.
  7. Reject non-game products. Remove DLC, soundtracks, expansions, bundles without the desired game, and unrelated sequels or spin-offs.
  8. Establish chronology. Compare official release records when store dates appear inconsistent.
  9. Find narrative guidance. Read the developer’s recommendation and look for a statement about standalone play or required prior knowledge.
  10. Check your device. Compare the listing’s supported platform and requirements with the machine or console you will use.
  11. Choose the edition. Select the base game or a clearly identified edition that includes it, based on the content you want.
  12. Keep a record. Save the exact listing name and edition so you can distinguish it from similarly named add-ons later.

Install and launch without buying the wrong item

After purchase, use the storefront library or the developer’s official download instructions associated with the verified product. Confirm that the library entry matches the base-game title you checked, not a soundtrack or add-on. If a bundle created several library items, open the entry whose product details identify the playable application.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting

Read the current system-requirements section and platform label first. Compatibility cannot be generalized from the sequel: two games in one series can target different operating systems, architectures, or console generations. A preservation-focused release may improve modern compatibility, but that does not guarantee support for your particular device.

When the original is unavailable

If the title is not listed in your country or on your platform, return to the developer’s official site for a supported distribution method. Do not substitute an unofficial download simply because the sequel is easy to obtain. Availability can change with licensing, regional restrictions, delisting, or a publisher transition; record the date and region of the listing you checked.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming “sequel” means mandatory order. Look for the developer’s narrative guidance; the Finding Paradise wording shows that a sequel can be standalone.
  • Trusting an automatically grouped franchise page. Confirm the relationship on the developer’s own series information.
  • Buying the first search result. Compare the exact title, creator, product type, and included content.
  • Confusing a soundtrack or DLC with the game. Check the product classification and whether a base application is included.
  • Using another player’s availability as proof. Verify your own country, account region, platform, and date.
  • Treating one displayed date as definitive. Cross-check disputed chronology with official release announcements or records.
  • Assuming a collection contains every entry. Read the bundle’s itemized contents before purchase.
  • Generalizing compatibility from the sequel. Read the original’s own requirements and supported-platform labels.

What you should know before deciding to play the original first

You can make the decision with four pieces of evidence: the developer’s recommended story order, the original’s current availability, compatibility with your device, and the exact product being offered. If the developer requires or strongly recommends the earlier entry, play it first when you can obtain a legitimate compatible copy. If the sequel is explicitly standalone, starting there is reasonable, but read the description for references or returning characters before choosing.

When the original is unavailable in your region or does not support your hardware, the sequel may be the practical entry point. Treat that as a platform and access decision, not proof that the original is unimportant. Recheck official listings because availability, editions, and supported systems can change after you make your initial search.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell whether a game is the original or a sequel with a similar name?

Match the exact title, developer, publisher, and series description across the sequel’s listing and the developer’s official series page. Then verify the product type and edition on the store page.

Is it always necessary to play an indie game’s original before its sequel?

No. Release order and recommended story order are separate. Follow the developer’s guidance; the official Finding Paradise listing explicitly says it can be played first.

Why can’t I find the original on the same store as the sequel?

The original may be unavailable in your region, support a different platform, have moved to another storefront, or be sold under a different edition name. Check the developer’s site and other legitimate stores.
