You can stop navigating folders one at a time by choosing a method based on what you know about the file: open a known path, search for a partial name, select a match interactively, or browse from the terminal. Finding a file and opening it are separate steps: tools such as find locate paths, while xdg-open, an editor, or a reader uses the path for a different task.
Choose a method for the file task
| What you know or need | Useful approach | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| You know the path and want the desktop app | xdg-open |
Passes the file to its preferred desktop application. |
| You know part of the name or location | find |
Searches a directory tree and prints matching paths. |
| You want to choose among many paths | fzf with a file-listing command |
Lets you narrow a generated list interactively. |
| You need to inspect text | less or an editor |
Reads or edits the selected file in the terminal. |
| You prefer folder-style browsing in the terminal | A terminal file manager such as lf |
Combines navigation and configurable file launching. |
There is no controlled speed comparison for these methods in the cited documentation. Their practical benefit is avoiding repeated folder-by-folder navigation when a path, search term, or interactive selector can take you directly to a candidate.
Open a file when you already know its path
1. Delegate to the desktop application
From a terminal inside a desktop session, run xdg-open with the file path:
xdg-open ./report.pdf
xdg-open asks the desktop environment to open the file with the preferred application for its type; it does not itself choose a universal editor or reader. The result depends on desktop-session availability and the default application or MIME association. Debian’s xdg-open manual says the command is intended for use within a desktop session and is not recommended for root.

2. Make paths beginning with a dash unambiguous
A relative filename such as -draft.pdf can be mistaken for an option. Refer to it as ./-draft.pdf, use its absolute path, or use a file URL where appropriate. Debian’s xdg-open manual documents this argument issue. The explicit ./ prefix also makes clear that a relative path refers to the current directory.
Find a file when you know part of its name or location
3. Search a likely directory tree with find
Give find a starting directory and a name pattern. For example, to look for files whose names contain “budget,” without case sensitivity, under Documents:
find ~/Documents -type f -iname '*budget*'
-type f limits results to regular files, while -iname matches the name without case sensitivity. Quoting the pattern prevents the shell from expanding the asterisks before find receives them. GNU find documentation describes directory-tree searches and predicates for names, paths, and file types. Starting at a relevant project or folder narrows the search domain and usually makes results easier to review; the documentation does not promise a particular speed improvement.

4. Search by path or file type
Use a path pattern when the location is more distinctive than the filename, or add a type predicate when you want a class of entries. For example, to list PDF files beneath a project directory:
find ~/Projects -type f -iname '*.pdf'
GNU find also provides predicates such as -path for matching a path. Start from an explicit directory rather than searching the entire filesystem unless that wider scope is necessary. If the starting path begins with a dash, make it explicit with an absolute path or a ./ prefix so it is not confused with an option.
5. Apply an action to matches with a batched command
When the goal is to run one command on every matching path, -exec … {} + lets find pass batches of paths to that command. For example, to print the matched files’ metadata with stat:

- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
find ~/Documents -type f -iname '*budget*' -exec stat -- {} +
The -- tells stat to treat following arguments as operands rather than options; GNU find documents -exec {} + as a batching form that runs the command fewer times than invoking it separately for every match. Choose an action deliberately: listing, reading, editing, and launching in a desktop app are different operations. Avoid whitespace-based filename pipelines, which can mis-handle paths containing spaces or unusual characters.
Select paths interactively instead of typing them
6. Combine a file list with fzf
fzf is an interactive fuzzy finder. A file-listing tool such as fd can supply candidates; then fzf lets you refine the choices by typing part of a name or path. The fzf README documents integration with fd and notes that ignore-file behavior affects which files are listed. That means a file omitted by the listing command cannot be selected in the picker. Check the list-generation command and its ignore rules if an expected file does not appear.
7. Insert a selected path with Ctrl-T
With fzf shell integration installed and enabled, its documented Ctrl-T binding opens a file or directory selector and inserts the chosen path into the current command line. You still decide what should consume that path: an editor for changes, a reader for inspection, or xdg-open for the desktop-associated app. Ctrl-T is not a standalone file opener, and its availability depends on shell integration and configuration.

8. Recover a previous command with Ctrl-R
When you remember having run a command on the file but not its exact arguments, fzf’s Ctrl-R shell binding searches command history interactively. Select a previous command to retrieve it, then review or edit it before execution. This can save rebuilding a long command, but it searches shell history rather than locating files on disk.
9. Read a selected file with fzf’s less binding
The fzf README documents a binding that uses less to inspect a selected file. This is useful for reading text without switching to a desktop application. It does not edit the file or open it in the desktop’s default app; use an editor or xdg-open when those are the actual goals.

10. Configure a file manager’s open command
A terminal file manager can combine browsing with launching once you have narrowed down the directory. The Ubuntu Noble lf manual documents configurable open commands, including patterns that use an editor or invoke xdg-open. The command and key binding depend on configuration, so do not assume that every installation opens files the same way.
This option fits users who want a visual, keyboard-driven directory view but prefer to stay in the terminal. It requires installing a terminal file manager and configuring its behavior for the applications and file types they use.
What to check when a method does not work
xdg-opendoes not open a window: confirm you are in a desktop session and that the file type has a preferred application configured. The command delegates to the desktop’s association rather than providing its own viewer.- A file whose name starts with
-is treated oddly: make the path explicit with./or an absolute path. Forfind, also ensure its starting point is an explicit path rather than an option-like argument. findreturns too many or too few results: check the starting directory, the distinction between-nameand case-insensitive-iname, and whether you need a path or type predicate.- fzf does not offer an expected file: inspect the command producing its candidate list and any ignore rules applied by that traversal tool. Also confirm that fzf’s shell integration is installed for Ctrl-T or Ctrl-R.
- A terminal file manager opens the wrong program: inspect its configured open command. The behavior is configurable rather than universal.
Use the tool that matches the next action
Use xdg-open when the intended result is the desktop-associated application, less when you only need to read text, and an editor when you need to make changes. Use find to discover paths, then pass those paths to the appropriate consumer; use fzf when choosing from a generated list is easier than typing a full path. These tools solve different parts of the workflow rather than replacing one another.
