After the Enshrouded 1.0 update, a save can appear to have vanished when the game is simply displaying the wrong save source. Windows local saves and Steam Cloud saves are kept in different folders and shown in separate in-game tabs.
For a Windows installation, check these locations first:
Recommended Free Tools
- Local saves:
C:Users<WindowsUser>Saved Gameskeen gamesEnshroudeddefault(commonly containing files such asc002andc003). - Steam Cloud saves:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<SteamID>1203620remote(commonly containingc004).
In Enshrouded, select the Local tab for the first location and Steam Cloud for the second. Before copying, replacing or deleting anything, close the game and make a zip backup of the entire Enshrouded save folder. To move a world online, stop the dedicated server, back up its existing savegame directory, copy the client world file into that directory, restart the server and verify the world before removing any backup.
Where Enshrouded 1.0 stores saves
Enshrouded 1.0 separates saves into two sources rather than presenting every file in one combined list. The source selected in the game must match the folder in which the save resides. A missing world or character therefore does not automatically mean that it was deleted.

<WindowsUser> is your Windows account folder. <SteamID> is the numeric Steam userdata folder for the account that owns the game. Do not type the angle brackets literally when navigating; replace each placeholder with the folder name on your computer.
Use the matching tab in the game
- Close any world currently running.
- Open the world or character selection screen.
- Choose Local if you are checking
Saved Gameskeen gamesEnshroudeddefault. - Choose Steam Cloud if you are checking
Steamuserdata<SteamID>1203620remote.
If a save is not listed, switch to the other tab before attempting recovery. The two sources are intentionally separate, so a file in one does not have to appear in the other.
What changed in the 1.0 save format
Keen Games changed Enshrouded’s save-data format for version 1.0. The stated goals were smaller files and a simpler folder structure. On the first 1.0 load, saves created with version 0.8 or earlier are backed up and automatically migrated to the new format.
What the first 1.0 launch does
- Older world and character data is detected when the game first reads it under 1.0.
- The pre-migration data is backed up before conversion.
- The converted data is then written in the 1.0 format.
Allow the migration to finish before closing the game or interrupting the process. If you are upgrading several installations, keep the original backup until you have opened the migrated world and confirmed its progress.

Read-only files can stop migration or saving
Enshrouded warns when a world or character file is read-only. A read-only attribute prevents the game from overwriting the file during migration or normal saving. In File Explorer, right-click the affected file or folder, choose Properties, clear Read-only, select Apply, and try again. If Windows reapplies the attribute, check permissions on the parent folder and whether security software or a synchronization tool is locking the file.
Back up the complete save before changing it
A save transfer is safest when you can restore both the source and destination. Keen’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for creating a zip of the Enshrouded save folder.
- Exit Enshrouded completely. Do not leave the game at the main menu while copying files; close it so no save is being written.
- Open the local folder or Steam Cloud
remotefolder that contains the save you intend to use. - Copy the entire Enshrouded save folder to a separate location.
- Right-click the copied folder, choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and give the archive a date-based name such as
enshrouded-save-before-server-move-2026-10-15.zip. - Keep the archive outside the active save directory. A USB flash drive is an optional second location for a backup or for moving it between computers.
Do not edit, rename or delete the original until the destination has been opened and checked. A backup made after replacing the server file cannot restore the previous server state.

C:Users<WindowsUser>Saved Gameskeen gamesEnshroudeddefault
Navigate there in File Explorer
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar and paste
%USERPROFILE%Saved Gameskeen gamesEnshroudeddefault. - Press Enter. Windows expands
%USERPROFILE%to the account you are currently using. - Inspect the files and their modified dates. Local examples include
c002andc003; do not infer a world name from the number alone.
If the folder does not exist, check whether you are signed into a different Windows account, whether the game has ever created a local save on that installation, and whether the save was made under Steam Cloud instead. The absence of this folder does not prove that the Steam Cloud copy is gone.
How to find a Steam Cloud save
Steam Cloud copies are stored in Steam’s per-user userdata tree:

Navigate to the remote folder
- Close Enshrouded and, preferably, exit Steam before making a manual copy.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata. - Open the numeric folder belonging to your Steam account.
- Open
1203620, thenremote. - Copy the complete contents for backup rather than selecting only one file.
The numeric folder can be difficult to identify if several Steam accounts have used the PC. Check modified dates and the account currently signed into Steam. In the game, select Steam Cloud when using this source.
What to do when Steam Cloud and local copies differ
Do not overwrite one source with the other until you have preserved both. Make separate zip archives labelled Local and Steam Cloud, then open each source from its corresponding tab. This lets you compare world names and progress without destroying the alternative copy.

Why a character or world appears to be missing
The wrong save tab is selected
This is the first check because Local and Steam Cloud are separate. A save in Saved Gameskeen gamesEnshroudeddefault will not necessarily be listed under Steam Cloud, and a save in userdata<SteamID>1203620remote will not necessarily be listed under Local.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 1.0 migration has not completed
Older 0.8-or-earlier saves are converted when first loaded by 1.0. Keep the game open long enough for the migration to finish, then check the appropriate tab again. If the game reports that a file cannot be written, remove its read-only status before retrying.
The game is using another Windows or Steam account
Verify the Windows user shown in C:Users and the Steam account that is currently signed in. Each can point to a different save location. A second numeric folder under Steamuserdata may belong to another account on the same PC.
The file was overwritten during a transfer
Stop further changes and restore the pre-transfer zip to a separate working folder. Do not use the same archive as both source and destination. If the server was already restarted, preserve its current savegame folder before attempting another replacement.

Move an Enshrouded world to a dedicated server
Moving a world transfers the world state, not every player’s character state. The dedicated server stores world progression; each player’s character progression remains on that player’s client. A copied world therefore does not automatically carry all characters, inventories or personal progression to a new machine.
Before you copy anything
- Make sure the client and server are on the same current Enshrouded build. After an update, verify both again before troubleshooting a load failure.
- Close Enshrouded on the client.
- Stop the dedicated server so it is not writing the destination file while you replace it.
- Back up the complete client save folder and the server’s existing
savegamefolder. - Identify the world file from the save source that contains the desired world: Local or Steam Cloud.
Self-hosted Windows server procedure
- Stop the server process and confirm that it has fully exited.
- Close the Enshrouded client.
- Zip the client folder containing the source world.
- Copy the server’s current
savegamedirectory to a separate backup location. Keep its original contents intact until the new world is verified. - Open the client source folder. Use
C:Users<WindowsUser>Saved Gameskeen gamesEnshroudeddefaultfor Local orC:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<SteamID>1203620remotefor Steam Cloud. - Identify the desired world file by opening the matching source in Enshrouded and noting the world and progress you want. Preserve the file’s original name while copying.
- Copy that world file into the server’s
./savegamedirectory, replacing the server’s existing world file only after the backup is complete. - Start the server.
- Connect and confirm the world name, buildings, map state and other expected world progress.
- Keep both backups until you have completed a normal play session and confirmed that the server saves successfully.
Keen’s installation guidance describes a Windows server downloaded through Steam’s Tools section. The first launch creates enshrouded_server.json; that configuration file does not replace the world’s savegame data.
Using a hosting panel
A provider’s file manager may expose the server’s savegame directory instead of a local ./savegame path. The sequence is unchanged: stop the server, download or otherwise preserve the existing save, upload the selected client world file into the panel’s savegame directory, restart, and verify. Panel labels and permissions vary, so confirm that the server is actually stopped and that the upload completed before starting it again.
What will and will not transfer
| Data | Where it is stored | Result of copying the world file to the server |
|---|---|---|
| World progression | Dedicated server’s savegame directory |
Transfers with the selected world file |
| Character progression | Each player’s client save source | Does not transfer for every player just because the world was copied |
Players may need to use the client characters that already contain their own progression when they join the transferred world. If a character appears reset, check that player’s Local and Steam Cloud tabs rather than replacing the server world again.
Dedicated-server save facts and limits
| Fact | Current documented detail |
|---|---|
| Save size | Keen’s Dedicated Server FAQ (2025) states that a save file can be between 1 MB and 100 MB. |
| World file count | There is one file per game world on the dedicated server. |
| Character files | Character save games are not stored on the dedicated server. |
| Automatic saves | Dedicated-server save files are created every five minutes. |
| Supported server platform in the installation guide | Windows. |
| Server distribution | Downloaded through Steam’s Tools section. |
| First-launch configuration | The server creates enshrouded_server.json after its first launch. |
| Default save directory | ./savegame, with hosting panels potentially presenting it through a file manager. |
The 1–100 MB range is a documented possible range, not a promise that every world will be a particular size. Allow enough disk space for the active file and multiple dated backups.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Version compatibility after moving a save
Keep the client and dedicated server on the same current build. A world created or migrated by a newer client may not behave correctly when loaded by an older server. When Enshrouded updates, check the client version, server version and hosting-panel image or installation before moving files again.
- Stop the server before applying an update or replacing a save.
- Back up the pre-update server
savegamedirectory. - Launch the client once if it needs to migrate an older save, then back up the migrated result.
- Start the server and verify the world before inviting players back.
If the world fails to load after an update, restore the server backup rather than repeatedly opening and saving the same file with mismatched versions. Confirm that both ends are current, then retry with a copy of the migrated save.
Quick Recap
Recovery checklist for a disappeared save
- Close Enshrouded.
- Make a zip backup of every Enshrouded save folder currently present.
- Check the Local path:
C:Users<WindowsUser>Saved Gameskeen gamesEnshroudeddefault. - Check the Steam Cloud path:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<SteamID>1203620remote. - Open the matching Local or Steam Cloud tab in the game.
- Confirm that you are using the intended Windows and Steam accounts.
- Check the file or folder’s Read-only attribute and clear it if necessary.
- If the save was made before 1.0, allow its automatic migration to finish.
- If a server transfer occurred, restore the untouched server backup and the client backup to separate folders before trying again.
- Verify client and server builds before loading a transferred world.
Safe habits for future transfers
- Keep dated zip archives for the client source and server destination separately.
- Record whether each archive came from Local or Steam Cloud.
- Stop the server before every replacement or update.
- Copy the complete source folder before selecting an individual world file.
- Never assume a world transfer also transfers player characters.
- Keep at least one backup away from the gaming PC; a USB flash drive can serve as that offline copy.
- Delete old archives only after a newer server save has been opened and verified.
