To listen to a game’s music away from the game, search the exact title with official soundtrack or original soundtrack, then verify the album through the publisher, developer, composer, or an official music-release page. Choose the version available in your country and decide whether you want streaming, a downloadable file, an offline app download, or a physical record.

There is no universal soundtrack service. Availability is specific to each game, release edition, territory, and platform. An official album may appear on several music services, as a Steam soundtrack product, through Nintendo Music, or only as a publisher-backed physical edition.

How do I listen to a game’s soundtrack outside the game?

Start with the game’s exact name, including subtitles and edition details, followed by official soundtrack, original soundtrack, or OST. Open the game’s official website, publisher or developer news page, composer page, or the announcement for the album. Those sources are the best way to distinguish the original recording from a fan playlist, cover, remix, arrangement, or user upload.

After locating an official release, compare the album title, credited artist, publisher, track list, and version with the listing on the service you want to use. Check the country shown by your account, because licensing can make an album available in one region and absent in another. Then select the access method that matches your needs:

  • Streaming: listen through a supported music service while connected, subject to that service’s catalog and regional rights.
  • Purchase and download: buy files when the rights holder or a store offers them, then keep the files in the format supplied.
  • Steam: install a soundtrack product associated with a Steam game or a standalone soundtrack product.
  • Nintendo Music: eligible Nintendo Switch Online members can stream or download supported Nintendo tracks in the service’s app, with browser listening available on a computer.
  • Physical edition: buy a verified CD, vinyl, or box set when the specific game has an official release in stock.

Listening access is separate from permission to reuse the music in a livestream, video, podcast, or other public work. A subscription, download, or record purchase does not by itself grant a blanket reuse license.

Where can I find the official game soundtrack?

1. Search the exact game title and verify the rights holder

  1. Write the complete game title, including punctuation, subtitle, remake or remaster label, and release year if several versions exist.
  2. Add “official soundtrack,” “original soundtrack,” or “OST.” For a particular composer, add the composer’s name as well.
  3. Prioritize the game’s official site, publisher or developer announcement, composer’s official page, or an official store listing.
  4. Check that the credited artist and album title match the game. Confirm whether it is the complete original soundtrack, selected tracks, a sequel’s music, or an arrangement album.
  5. Follow the release links to the service available in your country. Recheck the current listing rather than relying on an old announcement.

A useful example is the Logic World developer announcement dated February 5, 2022. It linked that game’s original soundtrack to Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, SoundCloud, and YouTube, and identified Bandcamp as offering a high-quality DRM-free download. That demonstrates how a developer can provide a reliable route, but it does not establish that those services still carry every album or that the same arrangement applies to another game.

2. Check the publisher’s music announcements

Publishers sometimes collect links for several titles. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s 2019 announcement, for example, linked selected releases from Tekken, Dark Souls, Little Nightmares, Man of Medan, and Tales of Vesperia to streaming and download services. It listed Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Napster, and Tidal for streaming, and iTunes Store, Google Play, and Amazon Music among download options. Because the announcement is from 2019, treat it as a release record, not proof of present-day availability. Open the current album page in your region before subscribing or buying.

3. Search the service you already use

Once an official release is identified, search for the exact album in your preferred service. Compare the service result with the official announcement:

  • Does the artist or composer credit match?
  • Is the publisher or label the expected rights holder?
  • Does the track count and running order match the official release?
  • Is it the original recording rather than a cover, remix, live performance, or “inspired by” collection?
  • Can you access it from your account’s country?

Do not assume that an album available on one service is available on every other service. Catalogs, contracts, release windows, and country restrictions differ.

Choosing between streaming, downloads, Steam, and physical releases

Option Best for What to verify Known limitations
Music-service streaming Immediate listening across supported devices Exact album, artist, region, and current catalog listing Availability can differ by country and can change; offline features depend on the service
Purchased download Keeping files outside a subscription File format, quality, DRM terms, and whether the release is complete Not every game offers a download, and stores may retire listings
Steam soundtrack PC listeners who want a library item tied to Steam Whether it is a new music app or legacy DLC, install requirements, and available quality Some older releases require the parent game; files are supplied in the formats specified by the product
Nintendo Music Nintendo Switch Online members using a compatible device or computer browser Nintendo Account, membership, country support, and whether the title is in the catalog It is a membership service; app downloads are subject to compatible-device and service conditions
Official physical edition Collectors and listeners who want a record or box set Authenticity, edition, included tracks, stock, seller, and shipping region Only selected games receive physical editions, and stock changes

How Steam soundtracks work

Steamworks supports two official product types: a soundtrack associated with a Steam game and an independent soundtrack product for a game that is not sold on Steam, including older games. Steamworks describes soundtrack products as containing MP3 files, with an option for the publisher to include higher-quality or lossless audio. The quality offered is title-specific; do not assume that every Steam soundtrack includes lossless files.

Buying and installing a current Steam soundtrack

  1. Open the soundtrack’s Steam store page and confirm the game title, publisher, track information, and included formats.
  2. Buy the soundtrack or add it to your account through the listing’s normal purchase process.
  3. Open your Steam Library. Purchased soundtracks are added to the library, but they still need to be installed.
  4. Select the soundtrack and choose the install control. Newer releases are delivered as music apps.
  5. After installation, open Steam’s music player or the soundtrack’s library entry and play the tracks without launching the game.
  6. If the product offers more than one quality level, open Steam’s music settings and select the higher-quality version when available.

When a Steam soundtrack is older DLC

Some older soundtrack releases remain downloadable content rather than separate music apps. In that case, Steam Support says the parent game may need to be installed before the soundtrack files become available. If the soundtrack does not appear as an independent library item, open the related game’s properties and downloadable-content list, install the soundtrack DLC, and check the game’s local files or Steam music interface afterward. The exact path can differ by release because legacy products were packaged differently.

What to check before choosing Steam

  • Whether the product is standalone or tied to a game you do not own.
  • Whether the files are MP3 only or include the optional higher-quality or lossless set.
  • Whether the listing contains the complete score, selected tracks, bonus music, or a separate arrangement album.
  • Whether the publisher has provided current metadata and track names.

Using Nintendo Music for Nintendo soundtracks

Nintendo describes Nintendo Music as an exclusive service for Nintendo Switch Online members: “Listen to Nintendo soundtracks anytime, anywhere with this exclusive service for Nintendo Switch Online members.” A Nintendo Account and an eligible membership are required. The service is not available in every country, and the app requires a compatible smartphone or tablet and internet access for setup and use.

Listening on a phone or tablet

  1. Confirm that your Nintendo Account has an eligible Nintendo Switch Online membership and that the service is supported in your country.
  2. Install the Nintendo Music app on a compatible smartphone or tablet.
  3. Sign in with the Nintendo Account linked to the membership.
  4. Search for the game or browse the available Nintendo catalog.
  5. Stream a track, album, or playlist. The app also supports downloading tracks for offline listening when the service allows it.

Listening in a computer browser

Nintendo says computer users can browse and listen in a web browser. Sign in with the eligible Nintendo Account, search the catalog, and verify that the game’s soundtrack is present before planning a listening session. Browser access does not mean that every Nintendo game is included.

How large is the catalog?

On the Nintendo page accessed October 13, 2026, Nintendo described the library as more than 250 hours across more than 130 titles. Those are Nintendo’s figures for the catalog shown on that page, not a promise that every Nintendo soundtrack is included or that the totals will remain unchanged. Check the current catalog for the particular game you want.

Finding an official physical soundtrack

Physical records are title-specific collector releases, not a standard option for every game. Nintendo’s US store lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Deluxe X8LP Boxset as an example of an official vinyl soundtrack. Bandai Namco’s official European store has listed vinyl editions for games including Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Code Vein, and Little Nightmares.

Before buying, verify all of the following on the current product page:

  • The game title and edition, including whether it is a soundtrack, an arranged score, or a limited selection.
  • The number and format of records or discs and the included track list.
  • Whether the seller is the publisher, an authorized store, or an identifiable retailer.
  • Current stock, shipping country, taxes, and return terms.
  • Whether the listing is new, used, sealed, or a resale item.

Store stock changes, so an old announcement or product photograph is not evidence that an edition is still available. Do not buy a record solely because its artwork resembles the game; match the catalog number, publisher, and track information.

How to tell whether a release is complete and official

“Soundtrack” can describe several different products. Use the release details to classify what you found:

Release label What it may contain Question to ask
Original soundtrack or OST Music used in the game, sometimes selected rather than complete Does the track list cover the full score or only highlights?
Official game album A publisher-approved digital or physical release Which artist, composer, and rights holder are credited?
Arrangement or remix album New performances or altered versions of game themes Do you want the in-game recordings or reinterpretations?
Fan playlist or upload User-curated audio, covers, or extracted game files Is there an official release you can use instead?

Compare the release title, composer credit, label, and track list across the rights holder’s announcement and the service listing. A matching cover image alone is not enough, because unofficial uploads can reuse official artwork or similar names.

Troubleshooting when you cannot find the music

The game does not appear in search

Try the complete title, an alternate regional title, the composer’s name, and “original soundtrack.” Check the publisher and developer pages directly. Some games have music released under a composer or studio name rather than the game title.

  • Release Notes First release on vinyl of the cult-hit GameCube soundtrack Housed in a gatefold jacket with new tokusatsu inspired artwork by Drew Wise Liner notes by Video Game Grooves Podcast host Anthony John Agnello Limited Edition colored vinyl

You find several albums with similar names

Compare the game’s release year, edition, artist, publisher, and track list. A sequel, remake, downloadable expansion, and original game can have nearly identical album titles. Choose the release that matches the version you played.

The official link opens but the album is unavailable

The listing may be restricted in your country, discontinued, or moved to another service. Search the exact album title in your own region and check a newer publisher or developer announcement. Do not treat a dated platform list as a current availability guarantee.

The Steam soundtrack is missing after purchase

Open the Steam Library and confirm that the purchase completed. Look for the soundtrack as a music app. If it is not present, open the associated game’s downloadable-content list; older releases can require the parent game to be installed. Check Steam’s music settings for an available higher-quality version.

Nintendo Music will not play offline

Confirm that the Nintendo Account has the required membership, that the country is supported, and that the device is compatible. Download the tracks in the app while online, then test playback before traveling. Browser listening is a separate computer option and does not replace the app’s device requirements.

A physical edition is listed but cannot be ordered

Check stock, shipping territory, and the edition’s current product page. A store category can show past releases after inventory is gone. If buying from a reseller, verify the seller, condition, included media, and authenticity.

If you plan to use the music publicly

Finding and hearing an official soundtrack answers an access question, not a copyright-permission question. The sources that document streaming, downloads, Steam products, Nintendo Music, and physical records do not grant blanket permission to place the music in a video, livestream, podcast, game, or commercial project.

For public reuse, identify the particular game and intended use, then read the publisher’s current creator policy and the rules of the platform where you will publish. A purchased record, downloaded file, or active music subscription may allow personal listening while still leaving public performance, synchronization, redistribution, or monetization rights with the rights holder. When the policy is unclear, seek permission or use music licensed for the intended use.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Write the exact game title and version.
  2. Search for “official soundtrack” or “original soundtrack.”
  3. Verify the release through the developer, publisher, composer, or official store.
  4. Match artist, album title, edition, track list, and publisher details.
  5. Check availability in your country and whether the release is current.
  6. Choose streaming, a purchase download, Steam, Nintendo Music, or a physical edition.
  7. Confirm offline behavior, file quality, and installation requirements.
  8. For records or box sets, confirm stock, seller, condition, and included music.
  9. If you will publish the music, investigate reuse permission separately.

The most reliable route is title-first and source-first: identify the official album, then use the service or format that is actually offered for that game in your region.
