If an app is installed but missing from a Start-menu pin, press the Windows key, type its name, and open the matching app result. If search does not find it, check Start > All apps (Windows 11), the alphabetical Start list (Windows 10), Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11), or the built-in Apps folder with shell:AppsFolder. These locations answer different questions: a missing pin does not prove that the app is absent.
Use the discovery steps below first. Only use Repair, Reset, or Control Panel maintenance when the app is listed but will not start. Menu names vary by Windows version and by whether the program is a Microsoft Store-style app or a traditional desktop application.
Why an installed app can be missing from Start
Windows has several app surfaces rather than one master list. A pinned Start item is only a shortcut in the Start layout; removing the pin does not uninstall the program. Start search, the All apps list, Settings, and File Explorer’s Apps folder can expose the same installation through different entries. Microsoft describes Start search as the quick way to find an app or perform an action: “To find an app or to perform an action quickly, use the Search bar available on the Start menu.”
An entry can also be difficult to spot because the app is listed under a different publisher name, inside a Start folder, under a shortened name, or as a desktop program whose shortcut was never created. Conversely, an app that appears in a shortcut list may be damaged or blocked and therefore fail to launch. Treat finding, confirming installation, and repairing a launch failure as separate tasks.

The app’s type matters. Store-style apps generally expose Windows Settings actions such as Advanced options, while traditional desktop programs may expose maintenance commands through Control Panel. A Start pin is not proof of either type, and an absent pin is not proof that either type was removed.
Fastest method: search from Start
- Press the Windows key, or select the Start button.
- Type the app’s name. You do not need to open a search box first.
- Inspect the result and confirm that it is labeled as an app rather than a document, setting, or web result.
- Press Enter, or select the app with the mouse or keyboard and open it.
Search can return documents, settings, and web results alongside applications. If several items have similar names, check the icon and result category before opening one. Once the app is open, right-click its taskbar icon and choose the option to pin it to the taskbar if you want a permanent shortcut; pinning to Start is available from the app’s context menu where that command is offered.
If search finds nothing
Try the app’s product name, its publisher’s name, or a shorter distinctive word. A desktop program may have a different shortcut name from the name shown on its installer. If search still produces no app result, continue with the full app list and installation checks rather than assuming the program is uninstalled.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSearch is the quickest route when you know the name, but it is not the strongest installation test. A search result can be stale or can point to a document, and a missing result can reflect a shortcut or indexing problem. Use one of the lists below to cross-check it.
Browse the complete app list
Windows 11: Start > All apps
- Open Start.
- Select All apps.
- Scroll through the list, or use the alphabetical index to jump to the first letter of the app name.
- Select the app to launch it.
Windows 11’s Start interface can present installed apps in category, grid, or list views depending on the current interface. The pinned area and the All apps view are separate, so an app can be present in All apps without appearing among your pins. Microsoft documents Start structure and pinning in Customize the Windows Start Menu.
Look for a publisher folder as well as the product name. Some installers create one Start entry for a suite and place individual tools inside that folder. Expand any folder that resembles the publisher or product family before deciding that an entry is missing.
Windows 10: the alphabetical Start list
- Select the Start button.
- Browse the alphabetical app list on the left side.
- Use the first-letter shortcut, when shown, to jump to the required letter.
- Expand a folder if the app is grouped with other entries, then select the app.
Microsoft says the Windows 10 list is alphabetical and includes every app installed on the computer in that list: “The app list is ordered alphabetically and includes every app installed on your computer.” The exact grouping and visual layout can differ after updates or when an installer creates a folder.

Do not follow a Windows 11 screenshot expecting to see an All apps button in exactly the same place on Windows 10; use the alphabetical list and its letter navigation instead.
Confirm whether Windows 11 considers the app installed
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search the installed-app list or sort it to locate the program.
- Open the app’s More menu to view available actions.
This Settings path is the current Windows 11 check documented by Microsoft in How to check if an app or program is installed in Windows. It is not a universal label for every Windows release, so do not expect the same wording on Windows 10. The list is a verification surface, not a promise that the app has a Start pin or that it will launch successfully.
How to interpret the result
- App appears in Installed apps and opens: the installation is present; recreate a shortcut or pin it for easier access.
- App appears but does not open: follow the repair steps later in this guide.
- App does not appear: check AppsFolder, the original installer, and any account or administrator restrictions relevant to the app.
Installed apps is particularly useful when you remember that software was installed but cannot remember its Start label. Search by a distinctive part of the product name and inspect similarly named entries. If nothing matches, that is evidence to check another account, the original installer, or the publisher’s supported installation source rather than evidence that a Start pin was merely hidden.

Open the built-in Apps folder with shell:AppsFolder
File Explorer has a virtual folder that lists applications installed for the device or user. It is useful when Start search or the Start layout is incomplete.

- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
shell:AppsFolderexactly, including the colon. - Press Enter.
- Browse the icons, locate the app, and double-click it or select it and press Enter.
Microsoft documents this location as an alternate list of applications in Configure Startup applications in Windows and in its Start-navigation guidance.
AppsFolder is a virtual Windows location, not a normal folder in which you should edit, move, or delete program files. Its value is that it presents launchable application entries independently of the pins shown in Start.
Create a desktop shortcut from AppsFolder
- With
shell:AppsFolderopen, select the app. - Open its context menu by right-clicking it, or press Shift+F10 on the selected item.
- Choose Create shortcut.
- When Windows says it cannot create the shortcut in that location and offers to place it on the desktop, choose Yes.
The resulting desktop shortcut launches the same app without depending on a Start pin. You can then right-click the shortcut and rename it to a shorter label if necessary.
What AppsFolder can and cannot tell you
If the app appears in AppsFolder, Windows has a registered launch entry for it, even if Start does not display a pin. If it is absent from AppsFolder as well as Start and Windows 11 Installed apps, check the app’s installer or account scope. AppsFolder is a discovery and shortcut surface; it does not repair damaged files or replace the program’s own maintenance tools.
Choose the right route for the problem
| Route | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Start search | Fastest launch when you know the app’s name. | Results can mix apps with documents, settings, and web results. |
| All apps / alphabetical list | Browsing when the exact name is uncertain or the shortcut was unpinned. | Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different layouts; folders can hide an entry. |
| Settings > Apps > Installed apps | Confirming installation and reaching Windows 11 maintenance controls. | The exact path is a Windows 11 label and does not itself guarantee a working launch. |
shell:AppsFolder |
Alternate launch list and desktop-shortcut creation. | It is a virtual Apps folder, not a normal directory containing the program’s files. |
| Repair or Control Panel | Fixing an app that is listed but fails to start. | These are troubleshooting tools, not discovery methods; availability varies by app. |
Use the first two routes for discovery, Installed apps or AppsFolder to verify and launch, and repair tools only after you have established that the app is present.
The practical order is therefore: search, browse the version-appropriate Start list, verify in Windows 11 Installed apps, try AppsFolder, and only then repair. This avoids reinstalling software merely because a shortcut was removed.
If the app appears but will not launch
Repair a Windows 11 app from Settings
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app and open its More menu.
- Select Advanced options if that option is available.
- Under the reset or repair section, select Repair.
- Try launching the app again from Start search, All apps, or AppsFolder.
Microsoft’s Repair apps and programs in Windows page notes that not every app exposes Advanced options or Repair. Repair is intended to correct the installation without the more disruptive effects associated with resetting, but the exact behavior depends on the app.
Use Reset only after Repair
If Repair is unavailable or does not solve the launch problem, return to the same Advanced options page and choose Reset when offered. Review the app’s own documentation first: Microsoft does not promise that resetting preserves every app’s local setting, sign-in state, downloaded content, or other data. Reset is therefore a later step, not the first response to a missing Start icon.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAfter Repair or Reset, launch the app from a known-good surface such as AppsFolder rather than assuming the old pin was refreshed. If it opens there, create a new shortcut or pin. If it still fails, record the exact error and use the publisher’s supported recovery instructions.

Repair a traditional desktop program through Control Panel
- Search for and open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Find the program in the list.
- Right-click it and choose Repair or Change, if either command is offered.
- Complete the program’s maintenance wizard, then try launching it again.
Many desktop installers provide their own repair or change workflow; others provide neither. If no maintenance command appears, consult the installer or publisher’s supported uninstall-and-reinstall procedure rather than deleting program files manually.
Do not confuse an unavailable Repair command with proof that the app is absent. Option availability varies by installer and app type. A listed program may require its original installer, a Change workflow, or a publisher-specific repair tool.
When the missing app is Microsoft Store
A missing Microsoft Store icon often means it was unpinned, not removed. Search Start for Microsoft Store; if it appears, open it and pin it again from the available context menu. Microsoft’s account guidance is at Can’t find Microsoft Store app.
Checks when Store is not in search
- Confirm the account: sign in to Windows with the Microsoft account associated with the device, when your organization’s setup requires one.
- Check for workplace policy: on a work or school computer, an administrator may have disabled Microsoft Store. Ask the administrator to confirm the policy rather than trying to bypass it.
- Try the other discovery surfaces: check All apps, Installed apps on Windows 11, and
shell:AppsFolderbefore concluding that Store is absent.
These checks are specific to Store availability and account or policy conditions; they do not replace the general app-discovery steps above.
If Store is present in one list but not pinned, treat that as a visibility issue and recreate the pin. If it is absent from every list, account or administrator controls become more plausible than a simple Start-layout change.
Windows 10: what is different now
Windows 10 uses the alphabetical Start list and has different Settings labels from Windows 11. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10; existing PCs continue to operate, but the unsupported status is a material security and maintenance limitation. See Microsoft’s lifecycle notice in Customize the Windows Start Menu and the repair guidance at Repair apps and programs in Windows.
For a Windows 10 machine, use Start search, the alphabetical Start list, AppsFolder, and Control Panel as described above. Do not assume that the Windows 11 path Settings > Apps > Installed apps exists with the same name. If the computer is still used for sensitive work, plan a supported Windows upgrade or replacement in addition to fixing the immediate shortcut problem.

A shortcut fix can restore access to an app; it cannot provide the missing security updates or technical assistance for an unsupported Windows 10 installation.

- Confirm the exact name. Search by the publisher or a distinctive part of the product name, not only the shortcut label you remember.
- Check all four discovery surfaces. Use Start search, All apps or the Windows 10 alphabetical list, Windows 11 Installed apps, and
shell:AppsFolder. - Distinguish visibility from launch failure. If an entry opens, recreate a desktop shortcut or pin it. If it appears but does not open, use Repair or the program’s Control Panel maintenance option.
- Check scope and account. Some installations are available only to one Windows user, while Store access can depend on the signed-in Microsoft account or an administrator policy.
- Do not delete folders manually. Removing an executable or shortcut from File Explorer can leave an incomplete installation and make later repair harder.
- Reinstall only when installation evidence is missing or repair fails. Use the original installer or the app’s supported source, and note any settings or data the app may store locally before removing it.
Windows’ built-in surfaces are sufficient for this task; a third-party “Start menu fixer” is not required to locate or launch an installed application.
Questions to answer before reinstalling
- Does the app appear in AppsFolder or Installed apps?
- Does it launch from any surface, or does every route fail?
- Is the missing item only a pin, or is the registered app entry missing too?
- Is this a Store-style app subject to account or workplace policy?
- Does the desktop installer offer Repair or Change?
These answers prevent the two most common wrong turns: reinstalling an app that was merely unpinned and deleting files from an installation that could have been repaired.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does removing an app from Start uninstall it?
No. A Start pin is a shortcut in the Start layout. Search for the app, browse All apps or the Windows 10 alphabetical list, check Windows 11 Installed apps, or open shell:AppsFolder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the quickest way to open an app that is missing from Start?
Press the Windows key, type the app name, confirm the result is an application rather than a document, setting, or web result, and press Enter.
How can I check whether an app is installed in Windows 11?
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search the list. This confirms that Windows recognizes the installation, but it does not guarantee that the app will launch.
What does shell:AppsFolder do?
Press Windows+R, enter shell:AppsFolder, and press Enter to open Windows’ virtual Apps folder. It lists launchable applications and can create a desktop shortcut from an app’s context menu.
What should I do if the app is listed but will not open?
In Windows 11, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More > Advanced options and choose Repair when available. Try Reset only afterward. For desktop programs, use Control Panel > Programs and Features and choose Repair or Change if offered.
Will Reset preserve my app data?
Microsoft does not promise that Reset preserves every app’s local settings, sign-in state, downloaded content, or other data. Review the app’s documentation before using Reset.
Why can’t I find Microsoft Store?
It may simply have been unpinned. Search for Microsoft Store and pin it again if found. If it is absent, check the Microsoft account and ask a work or school administrator whether Store access was disabled.
Can I follow the Windows 11 Installed apps steps on Windows 10?
Not with the same labels. Windows 10 uses the alphabetical Start list and different Settings wording. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, including free updates, technical assistance, and security fixes.
The Bottom Line
A missing Start pin is usually a visibility problem, not proof of an uninstall. Search first, then browse the version-specific app list, verify with Windows 11 Installed apps or shell:AppsFolder, and recreate a shortcut if the app opens. Use Repair before Reset, use Control Panel for desktop programs, and check account or administrator restrictions for Microsoft Store.
