Open Call of Duty’s Social or Friends menu and add your friend with their full Activision ID. After the request is accepted, use the Party or Manage Party controls to invite them, or select their name to join their party. The exact labels vary by Call of Duty title, platform and playlist, so use the title-specific notes below rather than assuming one universal menu path.
What you need before searching
Both players should be using the same Call of Duty title and a compatible, up-to-date game installation. You also need the Activision account identifier your friend uses in game. A console username, Steam name or Battle.net name may not be enough because Activision friends and current-platform friends are separate categories in the Social menu.
- Ask for the friend’s Activision ID exactly as it appears in the account or game.
- Confirm which Call of Duty title and playlist you are using.
- Make sure both accounts are online and available to receive party invitations.
- If either player is on another platform, check that the title and selected playlist support crossplay.
Activision describes the Activision ID as the unique identifier friends use to recognize a player. Its Black Ops 6 support article, dated April 3, 2025, says: “Your Activision account comes with a unique Activision ID, which is how you’ll appear in game and how you and your friends can identify each other.”
Find your friend’s Activision ID
Ask for the complete ID
Have your friend read the ID from their Activision account or in-game profile and send it to you. A common format is DisplayName#1234567. Include the # and number suffix when one is shown; that suffix distinguishes players who may have the same display name. Some older Activision IDs do not include a number suffix, so do not add one yourself or assume every account follows the newer format.

Check the spelling before searching
Activision IDs are easy to mistype. Copy the capitalization, punctuation and suffix exactly, then search the Activision account rather than only your platform’s friend list. If the search finds nothing, ask the friend to verify the ID from the account they currently use for Call of Duty.
Why the suffix matters
The display name is the part people see, but the full Activision ID identifies the account. Two players can use similar or identical display names while having different suffixes. Omitting a visible suffix can therefore return the wrong person or no result. Conversely, an older account may show only a name, so adding a guessed number creates a different, invalid search.
Add a friend from the Social or Friends menu
Modern Warfare (2019) documented path
Activision’s Modern Warfare crossplay instructions, published October 27, 2019, give this title-specific sequence:

- Select Friends.
- Choose Invite Friends.
- Select Enter Activision Account.
- Type the friend’s complete Activision ID and send the request.
These labels are documented for Modern Warfare and should not be treated as the exact path in every later release. In another title, open the similarly named Social or Friends screen and look for an option such as adding, inviting or searching for an Activision account.
Other Call of Duty titles
Current releases may place the search field directly under Social, Friends or an add-friend icon. Select the Activision-account search option when the game offers separate choices for platform friends and Activision friends. Enter the ID exactly, submit the request and wait for the recipient to accept it.
If the game presents several tabs, check each one for Activision friends, friend requests and recently played players. Do not assume that a name shown in a platform overlay has already been added to the in-game Activision list. The account used for the current Call of Duty session is the account that must receive the request.
Accept a friend request
Open the incoming-request area from the same Social/Friends screen. In Activision’s Modern Warfare instructions, received requests are under Social > Friends > Invite Friends > Friend Request. Select the request and choose the accept option. Activision’s Warzone guidance also places invitation acceptance in the Social menu, although the precise submenu can differ by version.

Adding someone to your Activision friend list does not automatically place that person in your party. Party membership is a separate action. If the request remains pending, neither player should expect a join command to appear reliably.

If both players sent requests
Sending requests in both directions is unnecessary. Have one player accept the request that arrived, then refresh the Social list or reopen the menu if the accepted friend does not appear immediately. If an old request is still pending, canceling or declining it and sending one new, correctly spelled request can make the status easier to verify; use only the controls the current title provides.
Use recently played players when you do not know the ID
If you played together recently but do not have the Activision ID, open Social and look for a Recently Played, Recently Met or similarly named list. Activision says Warzone can add players you recently played with, and its Modern Warfare guide describes a recently met Activision-players list. Select the player from that list and send a friend request.
This method is useful when a display name is difficult to spell, but confirm that you have selected the correct player before sending the request. The list can contain several people from the same match, and a familiar platform name is not proof that you selected the intended Activision account.
Invite a friend to your multiplayer party
Modern Warfare party path
Once the friend appears on your Activision list, the Modern Warfare procedure is:
- Open Social.
- Select Party.
- Choose Manage Party.
- Select Invite Players.
- Choose the friend from your list and send the party invitation.
The party leader can also open Party Settings to adjust privacy. The available privacy choices and their wording may differ in another title, but the principle is the same: a closed or restricted party can prevent friends from joining even after they are on your friend list.
Other titles
In a different Call of Duty release, select the friend in Social and look for Invite to Party, or open the Party/Manage Party panel and choose an invite option. Follow the labels displayed by that title. Do not assume that the Modern Warfare menu sequence is unchanged in Warzone, Black Ops or a newer annual release.
Who can send the invitation?
The party leader normally controls the party’s invitations and privacy. If you are not the leader, ask that player to invite the friend or temporarily use the available party-management controls. A friend can be online and still have no visible invite command if the party is full, private or configured to block joining.

After the friend accepts your request, open Social, highlight the friend and choose the available Join Party or Join Game command. If no join command appears, the friend may be offline, already in a private party, in a mode that does not accept drop-in players, or using a different title or playlist. The party leader can send a direct invitation instead.

Joining a party and joining an active match are also distinct. A party invitation may place you in the lobby first; the leader then selects the playlist and starts the game. Some modes can prevent mid-match joining even when the lobby itself is open, so wait for the leader’s next lobby or invitation rather than repeatedly sending requests.
When the friend appears online but cannot be joined
Online status only confirms that the account is connected; it does not prove that the account is joinable. Check whether the friend is changing loadouts, in a solo activity, in a ranked playlist with different party rules or using party privacy that limits access. Have the leader send a fresh invitation after both players return to the same lobby.
Cross-platform joining and crossplay settings
Check the title and playlist first
Crossplay is controlled by the specific Call of Duty game and, in some cases, by the selected playlist. Before changing settings, verify that both players own or can launch the same title and that the playlist permits players from both platforms. A cross-platform friend request can succeed while a particular ranked or restricted playlist still prevents the party from matching together.

Black Ops 6 controls
Activision’s Black Ops 6 and Warzone crossplay article, dated April 3, 2025, documents console controls under Options > Settings > Account & Network. It notes that available controls can vary between unranked and ranked playlists.
- Steam and Battle.net: Activision says these PC versions do not expose an in-game crossplay-disable setting.
- Xbox consoles: Console privacy controls take priority over the in-game setting.
- Microsoft Store or Xbox PC app: Manage the relevant crossplay permission through the Xbox PC app.
Disabling crossplay can restrict matchmaking to the current platform in the documented Black Ops 6 settings. These details are specific to the cited Black Ops 6/Warzone guidance, not a universal rule for every Call of Duty release.
What both players should compare

Use these checks in order. Changing crossplay first will not fix a misspelled Activision ID, and relinking accounts will not make two different game releases compatible.
Troubleshoot common friend and party problems
Search returns no friend
- Ask for the Activision ID again and recheck every character.
- Include the
#and numeric suffix when the friend’s ID displays one. - Use the Activision-account search field, not only the console or PC friend list.
- Try the recently played-players list if you shared a match.
Activision’s Warzone guidance distinguishes Activision friends from current-platform friends, so finding someone on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam or Battle.net does not guarantee that the Activision search has located the same account.
The request was sent but the friend cannot join
- Confirm that the friend accepted the request rather than leaving it pending.
- Check that both accounts show as online and available.
- Ask the party leader to review party privacy and send a fresh invitation.
- Confirm that both players selected the same title and a compatible playlist.
A cross-platform friend cannot connect
Check crossplay support and the platform-specific privacy controls for the exact game and playlist. For Black Ops 6, review Options > Settings > Account & Network on console, and remember that Xbox console settings can override in-game choices. PC players using Steam or Battle.net will not see a crossplay-disable control in the game.

The wrong account is linked
Do not unlink or relink accounts casually to solve a friend-search problem. Activision’s Warzone support guidance warns that linking a PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net or Steam account to a different Activision account does not transfer progress. First verify which Activision account the friend is using and correct the ID search or invitation path instead.
The menu option is missing
Menu names can change after updates and can differ between the main lobby, a pre-match screen and an active match. Return to the main lobby, open Social or Friends there, and look for the Party or Manage Party panel. If the title offers separate ranked and unranked queues, test the intended playlist’s party rules rather than assuming a missing button is an account failure.
The friend appears twice
One entry may be a platform friend and another an Activision friend. Compare the full Activision ID and platform information before inviting anyone. Remove or ignore the duplicate only after confirming which account is currently linked to the Call of Duty session.

You do not need a separate product, printed manual or special accessory to find a friend or send a party invitation. The process uses the existing game, its Social/Friends menu and the Activision accounts already connected to the players’ platforms. A headset or controller can be useful for playing, but neither is a requirement for the account and menu procedure.
Quick procedure
- Get the friend’s complete Activision ID.
- Open Social or Friends and choose the Activision-account add/search option.
- Send the request and accept it from the friend-request area.
- Open Party or Manage Party and invite the accepted friend.
- If the friend is on another platform, verify crossplay support, account privacy and playlist restrictions.
- If the search fails, recheck the ID and use the recently played list before changing account links.

How do I join a friend on another platform?
Add the friend with the Activision ID, accept the request, confirm that the title and playlist support crossplay, and select Join Party or Join Game from Social. If the command is unavailable, check party privacy, online status and platform-specific crossplay settings.
Why can’t I find my friend by their console or PC name?
The platform friend list and Activision friend list are separate. Search for the Activision ID used in Call of Duty, including its visible suffix, rather than relying only on a PlayStation, Xbox, Steam or Battle.net name.
Can I add someone I just played with without knowing their ID?
Yes, when the title provides a Recently Played or Recently Met list. Warzone can add recently played players, and Modern Warfare documents a recently met Activision-players list. Verify the correct player before sending the request.

The friend may be offline, in a private or restricted party, using another title or playlist, or in a mode that does not accept drop-in players. Ask the party leader to review privacy and send a direct invitation from the lobby.
Where are crossplay settings in Black Ops 6?
Activision documents console controls under Options > Settings > Account & Network. Available controls can differ between unranked and ranked playlists. Steam and Battle.net do not provide an in-game crossplay-disable setting, and Xbox console privacy settings take priority.
Will unlinking and relinking my platform account fix friend problems?
