Season One is only the starting point. To get more games, use the curated Playdate Catalog, sideload a compatible game through your registered Playdate account, or install a game over USB. Catalog purchases install automatically; an external game normally arrives as a .pdx file (or a ZIP containing one) that you upload from the Playdate account page.
The best route depends on where you obtained the game and whether you want a managed store purchase or a manual install. The steps below cover each option, including what to do when a game does not appear.
What Season One includes—and what it does not
Season One is Playdate’s introductory game delivery, not a permanent limit on the handheld’s library. During setup, the first two Season One games download. After that, two new games arrive each Monday in Pacific Time for twelve weeks, for a total of 24 games. The schedule is described in Panic’s official Getting Started guide and is separate from later Catalog purchases and sideloaded titles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you are missing one of those 24 games, you do not need to buy it again. Open the handheld’s game-management screen and manually start the download. On current software this is Game Library; older instructions may call the menu Settings → Games. That recovery process is different from finding new games beyond Season One.

Season One also does not mean that every subsequent release will arrive automatically. New games must be obtained through Catalog, from an individual developer or marketplace, or through a development computer. Thinking of the first 24 titles as a starter collection helps avoid searching for a nonexistent “second season” delivery queue.
What you need before choosing a route
All three routes assume that the game is actually built for Playdate. Look for a download ending in .pdx, or a ZIP whose contents include that Playdate package. A Windows, macOS or Linux build for another platform will not become a Playdate game merely by changing its filename. Read the developer’s notes for whether a download is a full release, demo, update or test build.
A Playdate account is required for Catalog purchases and for wireless sideloading. The handheld must be registered to that account for uploaded titles to appear. Catalog purchases also require a payment card on the account; prices and whether a title is free are set by the seller. USB installation instead needs a computer and cable. Panic ships the handheld with a yellow USB-C-to-USB-A cable, so most owners do not need to buy another cable just to install a game.

| Path | Where the game comes from | What you need | How it reaches the Playdate | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog | The curated store on the handheld or at play.date/catalog | Playdate account, registered device and a payment card for purchases | Purchase is associated with your account and normally installs automatically within 12 hours or less; you can start it manually with Download All | Owners who want the simplest, managed purchase flow | Only games accepted into Catalog appear there |
| Wireless sideload | A developer’s website or a digital-goods marketplace such as itch.io, Gumroad or Shopify | A registered Playdate and a compatible .pdx file or ZIP containing one |
Upload the file on the Playdate account’s Sideload page, then refresh Game Library on the handheld | Independent releases, demos, free games and titles not listed in Catalog | Manual upload and refresh; external listings are not necessarily curated by Panic |
| USB via Simulator | A game file you have downloaded or built | Computer, USB connection, unlocked Playdate and the Playdate Simulator | Open the .pdx in Simulator and choose Device → Upload Game to Device |
Developers and people already using the Simulator | More software setup than a browser upload |
| USB Data Disk | A game file on your computer | Computer, USB cable and an unzipped .pdx folder |
Reboot to Data Disk, copy the folder into the mounted PLAYDATE volume’s Games folder, then eject or leave Data Disk mode |
Direct file transfer when wireless upload is not practical | Direct filesystem access carries a greater risk of damaging device software if mishandled |
Catalog is curated by Panic. A game obtained directly from a developer or another marketplace has not necessarily gone through that curation, so check the seller’s description and installation notes before downloading. The external route can expose you to tiny experimental games and demos that are not in the store, while Catalog gives you a more consistent account and download workflow.
Buy and install a game from Catalog
Find Catalog on the handheld or the web
Open the Catalog app on the Playdate, or browse play.date/catalog in a browser. The web and handheld storefronts use the same Playdate account relationship, so a purchase made either way is intended for the device associated with that account.
Add a payment card to the Playdate account before attempting a purchase. Once the transaction succeeds, the game is queued for the registered handheld. Panic’s Catalog instructions give an expectation of 12 hours or less for automatic installation; that is an expected window, not a guarantee that every download completes immediately. The handheld must be able to reach the network for the transfer to occur.
Start a pending download immediately
- On the Playdate, open System → Game Library → Downloads.
- Choose Download All.
- Remain on the downloads screen while the transfer runs, and keep the handheld connected as required by your normal network setup.
- Return to Game Library and launch the title after its download completes.
If the game still is not listed after the expected window, verify that the handheld is signed in to the same Playdate account used for the purchase, then revisit Downloads and run Download All again. A browser purchase does not require a separate file transfer from your computer; the account queue is what delivers it to the device.

Panic’s developer-distribution guidance allows creators to sell or share Playdate games on their own websites and through digital-goods services, including itch.io, Gumroad and Shopify. Developers can also submit finished games for consideration in Catalog, but independent distribution does not mean every title will be listed there.

Before downloading, confirm all of the following:
- The listing explicitly supports Playdate.
- The download is a
.pdxfile or a ZIP that contains a.pdxfolder. - The developer explains whether the file is a complete game, a demo, an update or a build for testing.
- The seller’s instructions identify any required Playdate OS version or special steps.
- You know whether the purchase is a one-time download, an account-linked entitlement or simply a file you must keep for future reinstalls.
Do not rename an unrelated archive to .pdx. A valid Playdate package has the .pdx extension or, when compressed, contains the unzipped .pdx folder that the Playdate tools expect. If a seller offers several platform downloads, choose the Playdate-specific one rather than a desktop, mobile or browser build.
Wireless sideloading through your Playdate account
For most owners, this is the easiest way to install a game purchased or downloaded outside Catalog. It needs no separate cable, but the handheld must already be registered to your Playdate account. The upload is tied to that account, which is useful if you later reset the device or sign in on a replacement.
Upload the game
- Sign in to your account at play.date.
- Open your account page and select Sideload.
- Choose the game’s
.pdxfile. If the developer supplied a ZIP containing the.pdx, upload the ZIP as supplied. - Wait for the website to finish processing the upload before closing the page. A large file may take longer to transfer than the page itself takes to open.
- On the Playdate, open Game Library. On earlier system versions, use Settings → Games.
- Refresh the game list if the new title is not immediately visible, then select the game to download it.
The sideloaded title is associated with the Playdate account. Panic’s instructions say you can download it again after resetting the handheld or on a replacement Playdate signed in to that same account. Keep the original developer download and any purchase receipt anyway, especially when the seller provides later updates.
If the game does not appear
- Confirm that the upload completed and that you used the account linked to the handheld.
- Refresh Game Library; older firmware may require the Settings → Games view instead.
- Check the file itself. Upload the original
.pdxor the developer’s ZIP rather than a folder nested inside another archive. - If the title is listed but will not start, return to the developer’s page for a Playdate-specific build or compatibility note.
- If you uploaded an update with a similar name, check the library carefully rather than assuming the original entry was replaced.
Install over USB with the Playdate Simulator
Panic documents Simulator upload primarily as a development workflow. It is useful when you already have the Playdate Simulator installed and want to test or deploy a local build. A normal player usually has less setup with wireless sideloading, but Simulator upload can be convenient when the game is on your computer and you are iterating on it.
- Connect the Playdate to the computer with USB.
- Unlock the device.
- Open the
.pdxin the Playdate Simulator. - In Simulator, choose Device → Upload Game to Device.
- Wait for the upload to finish, disconnect safely, and look for the title in Game Library.
This route depends on the Simulator recognizing both the package and the connected, unlocked device. If the menu command is unavailable, reconnect the cable, unlock the Playdate and reopen the Simulator before trying again. Use a complete Playdate package, not a compressed archive, when opening the game in Simulator unless the developer’s instructions say otherwise.
Install over USB with Data Disk mode
Data Disk mode exposes the Playdate’s storage to the computer. It can be useful for direct copying, but it deserves more care than the account upload route because you are working with the device’s filesystem. Panic warns that incorrect direct filesystem access can damage device software.
Copy a game to the Games folder
- Connect the Playdate to the computer with USB.
- On the handheld, select Settings → System → Reboot to Data Disk.
- Wait for a volume named
PLAYDATEto mount on the computer. - Open that volume and locate its
Gamesfolder. - Copy the unzipped
.pdxfolder intoGames. Do not copy only a compressed archive if the instructions call for an unzipped package. - Eject the
PLAYDATEvolume from the computer, or exit Data Disk mode on the handheld, before using the device normally.
Use only the official deployment procedure and avoid deleting, renaming or editing unrelated files on the mounted volume. If you do not need direct filesystem access, wireless sideloading is the lower-risk choice. Data Disk is a transfer method, not a replacement for checking whether the download is compatible with Playdate.

Organize a growing library
Playdate OS 3.0 introduced Folders and a redesigned Game Library for downloading, organizing and managing both Catalog purchases and sideloaded games. Panic says OS 3.0 supports storing hundreds of games. Its October 2, 2025 documentation also says, Over 1,300 at last count.
That wording is a dated count from the documentation, not a live total for 2026.

Use Game Library for downloads
Game Library is the central place to find newly purchased or sideloaded titles, refresh the list and start downloads. Keep Catalog titles and sideloaded titles in the same library, then use folders to group them by genre, developer, multiplayer status or any scheme that matches how you play. Folders become especially useful when you have more games than fit comfortably in a single scrolling list.
Keep the account association in mind
Account-based Catalog and wireless-sideloaded games can be downloaded again when the device is reset or when another Playdate signs in to the associated account. That makes the account login important when you reorganize or replace hardware; a file copied only by USB does not acquire the same website-based association through the sideload page. For USB-only titles, retain the original download so you can copy it again if needed.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A Catalog purchase is not on the device | The automatic queue has not run yet, or the device is using a different account | Check the account, open System → Game Library → Downloads, choose Download All and stay on that screen during transfer. The documented automatic expectation is 12 hours or less. |
| A sideload upload succeeds but no game is visible | The library has not refreshed, or the handheld is not registered to that account | Confirm registration, refresh Game Library (or use Settings → Games on older software), and check that the upload was the correct .pdx or ZIP. |
| The website rejects the file | The download is not a Playdate package or is nested incorrectly inside an archive | Return to the developer’s download page and obtain the Playdate build. Do not simply change a filename extension. |
| Simulator cannot upload | The device is locked, disconnected or not recognized | Reconnect USB, unlock the Playdate, reopen the Simulator and use Device → Upload Game to Device again. |
| The computer cannot use Data Disk files safely | Data Disk mode was not entered correctly, or the volume was disconnected without ejecting | Use Settings → System → Reboot to Data Disk, copy only the unzipped .pdx into Games, then eject the PLAYDATE volume or exit Data Disk mode. |
| The game launches but behaves unexpectedly | You may have a demo, test build or version that needs a newer system release | Read the developer’s notes and obtain the intended Playdate build or update. Do not assume a desktop build is interchangeable. |
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Catalog when you want Panic’s curated storefront, account-linked purchases and automatic installation.
- Choose wireless sideloading for a developer’s direct release, a marketplace download, a demo or a free game, provided it includes a compatible
.pdx. - Choose Simulator upload when you are testing a local build and already use the development tools.
- Choose Data Disk only when direct USB copying is necessary and you are comfortable following the filesystem precautions exactly.
- Use Game Library and Folders once the collection grows; OS 3.0 is designed to manage hundreds of installed games.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I get Playdate games after Season One?
Start with Catalog on the handheld or at play.date/catalog. For games that are not there, check the developer’s own site or a marketplace such as itch.io, Gumroad or Shopify, then use wireless sideloading or USB.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do all Playdate games go through Panic’s curation?
No. Catalog is curated, but Panic allows developers to sell or share games independently. Verify that an outside listing supplies a Playdate-compatible .pdx or ZIP and follow the developer’s instructions.
Can I install a free game without adding a payment card?
A payment card is required before buying through Catalog. A free or purchased game obtained from a developer can instead be uploaded through the Sideload page, provided the Playdate is registered to your account.
Why has my Catalog game not arrived yet?
Panic describes automatic installation as normally taking 12 hours or less. Open System → Game Library → Downloads, choose Download All and remain on that screen. Also check that the handheld and purchase use the same account.
Can I upload a ZIP file?
Yes, the wireless Sideload page accepts a ZIP containing the game’s .pdx. Data Disk copying uses the unzipped .pdx folder in the Games directory, and Simulator upload generally opens the .pdx package itself.
Will a sideloaded game survive a reset?
Panic says a title uploaded through the account can be downloaded again after a reset or on a replacement Playdate signed in to that account. Keep USB-only files separately because a direct copy is not automatically recorded by the Sideload page.

Is USB required for sideloading?
No. Wireless sideloading uses the Playdate account website and needs no separate cable. USB is an alternative through Simulator or Data Disk mode.
How many games can the Playdate hold?
OS 3.0 documentation says the system supports hundreds of games and records “Over 1,300 at last count.” That is the documentation’s dated figure, not a guaranteed current total or a promise that every game will fit in every configuration.
Which method is safest for a first-time owner?
Catalog is the most managed option. For an outside game, wireless sideloading avoids direct filesystem access and is generally simpler than Data Disk mode. Use USB Data Disk only when you specifically need direct copying and can follow Panic’s procedure carefully.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get Playdate games beyond the 24 Season One titles?
Use Playdate Catalog, a developer’s website or a supported marketplace. Catalog purchases install to the registered device; outside games can be uploaded through the account’s Sideload page or transferred by USB.
What file should a Playdate game contain?
Look for a Playdate-specific .pdx package, either directly or inside a ZIP. Do not rename an unrelated archive.
Why is my sideloaded game missing?
Confirm the Playdate is registered to the same account, refresh Game Library (or Settings → Games on older software), and verify that the upload completed with the correct .pdx or ZIP.
Should I use Data Disk mode?
Use it only when direct USB copying is necessary. Panic warns that incorrect filesystem access can damage device software; wireless sideloading is the simpler alternative for most owners.

The Bottom Line
Season One’s 24 games are an introduction, not the Playdate’s limit. Buy curated releases through Catalog, upload independent games wirelessly from the Sideload page, or use Simulator and Data Disk for USB transfers. Match the method to the file you have, keep your Playdate account details available, and treat direct filesystem access with care.
