To find a new game, open the Store on your Xbox and browse categories, Deals, or the games catalog, then open the title’s product page and follow the purchase or install prompt. To reinstall a game you already own, sign in with the Microsoft account that bought it, then use your owned library or My games & apps > Ready to install. On a Windows PC, open Microsoft Store > My Library and select the Download icon beside the game.
The right path depends on three things: whether you are on an Xbox console or Windows, whether you are discovering or retrieving a game, and whether you want a local installation or eligible cloud streaming.

Choose the correct path first
| Your situation | Where to start | What you are doing |
|---|---|---|
| Looking for a game you do not own | Xbox Store on the console, or Microsoft Store/Xbox app on Windows | Browse, open the listing, then buy or claim the title and install it |
| Reinstalling a digital Xbox game you bought | The Microsoft account that made the purchase; then your owned library | Retrieve an entitlement and download it again |
| A game is missing on Xbox One | My games & apps > Ready to install | Find owned content that is not currently installed |
| Installing on Windows | Microsoft Store > My Library | Select the Download icon to download and install |
| Playing without a local installation | On supported consoles, My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games | Start an eligible cloud-playable title |
A game appearing in a library does not by itself prove that you own it, that your subscription includes it, or that it runs on your particular device. The product page, account entitlement, region and compatibility determine what you can actually install.
Find a new game on an Xbox console
Xbox One: browse the Store
- From Home, move down to Store.
- Use Deals, a category such as Top free games, or Browse games to open the games catalog.
- Select a title to read its product-page information, including the available purchase or install option.
- Choose the on-screen purchase, claim or install command. If payment or an account confirmation is required, complete it with the Microsoft account you intend to use for the game.
- After the download begins, leave the console connected and check the queue or installed-games list to see progress.
Those labels are the documented Xbox One route. Microsoft’s accessible support instructions do not verify identical click-by-click wording for current Xbox Series X|S software, so use the Store and library labels displayed on your own console rather than assuming every Xbox One label is unchanged.

Search deliberately instead of installing the wrong edition
Open the exact title rather than relying on a search-result thumbnail. Confirm the edition and platform shown on the product page, and read any region, device or account message. A game can have several editions or platform listings, and a catalog result can be visible even when the item cannot be installed on a particular device or account.
Check whether the page presents a purchase command, a claim command, or an install command. A purchase creates the digital entitlement on the Microsoft account used at checkout. A claim or included title may depend on the account or membership conditions displayed on that page. An install command generally means the signed-in account can retrieve the title for that device, but the page remains the best place to confirm compatibility.
What happens after you select Install
The console adds the game to its download queue and stores the files locally. Keep the console connected while the download runs, and use the queue or installed-games area to see whether it is waiting, downloading, or complete. If the title is not playable yet, allow installation to finish rather than repeatedly selecting the product page.
Reinstall a game you already own digitally
Verify the purchasing account first
Digital Xbox games bought directly from Microsoft are downloads associated with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. If the game is absent, sign out of an unrelated profile and sign in with the purchasing account before troubleshooting anything else. Sharing a console does not merge the purchase histories of household accounts.
You can verify the transaction through that account’s Order history. This is useful when several household accounts have similar names or when a purchase was made years earlier. Order history identifies purchases for that account; it does not turn a different account into the owner. If the order is not present, check other Microsoft accounts that may have been used at checkout before assuming the game was removed.
Use the Xbox owned-games list
- Open My games & apps on the console.
- Open Ready to install to view owned games that are not installed on that Xbox One.
- Select the game and start the download.
- Wait for installation to complete before launching it; a partially downloaded item may appear in the queue without being playable.
If the title is not listed, check the account and the causes in the troubleshooting section below. Do not treat a subscription catalog or a title shown in a general library as proof that the game was purchased. Likewise, an old order record confirms the transaction but does not guarantee that every edition runs on every current device.
Purchase, subscription and library visibility are different
A purchased game is tied to the purchasing Microsoft account. A game supplied through a subscription is available only under the conditions shown for that subscription and title. The Xbox app can also display an installed game from another supported storefront. These three situations can look similar in a library, but they have different owners, install paths and eligibility rules. When in doubt, open the product page and check the signed-in account rather than relying on a badge or list position.

Install games on a Windows PC
Microsoft Store method
- Open Microsoft Store in Windows.
- Select My Library.
- Locate the game in your library. Microsoft states that an app or game with a Download icon has not been downloaded yet.
- Select that Download icon to download and install the game.
- When installation finishes, launch it from the Store, the Windows Start menu, or the installed-games entry.
“Any app or game with a Download icon next to it hasn’t been downloaded yet.” — Microsoft Support
If the icon is missing, the account may not own the title, the item may already be installed, or the title may not be available for that Windows device. Check the product listing and account before repeatedly refreshing the library. If the Store has just updated Windows, restart the computer and reopen My Library; Microsoft identifies a pending restart as one possible reason an installation does not appear or complete.
Xbox app library on Windows
The Xbox app for Windows can present an aggregated view of installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other supported PC storefronts. This is a convenience layer for finding and launching games; it is not a single ownership license. A title can appear because it is installed through another supported storefront, while its purchase, updates and launcher remain controlled by that storefront.
To control which storefronts appear, open your profile picture, choose Settings, open Library & Extensions, and toggle the storefront listings you want shown. Installed titles from supported storefronts can then appear in My Library and Most Recent. If a game is visible there but has no install command, open the relevant storefront or the title’s product page and verify its license and platform support. Removing a storefront from this view changes what the Xbox app displays; it does not remove the game from that storefront or cancel ownership.

A digital Xbox console purchase does not automatically mean there is a Windows installation for the same title. The product listing determines which platform is included. Conversely, a Windows game installed through Battle.net or another supported PC storefront may be visible in the Xbox app without being an Xbox console entitlement. Always verify the platform label before starting a large download.
Install locally or stream when eligible
Local installation
A local install downloads the game to the console or PC and uses local storage when you play. It is the appropriate route when you need the files on the device, when the title is not cloud-playable, or when your connection is not suitable for streaming. The exact download time and required space depend on the title and your connection; no universal size or speed figure applies to every game.
Before selecting Install, make sure the device has enough available storage and that you are using the intended account. If the console or PC reports a compatibility message, resolve that issue from the product page rather than repeatedly restarting the download.

Cloud streaming for supported titles
Some games can be played through cloud streaming instead of being installed. Availability depends on the title, device, account and membership or other eligibility conditions, and those conditions can change.
- On a supported Xbox console, open My games & apps.
- Choose Full library, then Owned Games.
- Look for the cloud badge on titles that are currently presented as cloud-playable.
- Select the title and follow the on-screen command to start streaming rather than downloading.
This path comes from an Xbox Wire feature published in April 2025. Treat the cloud badge and the current product page as the authority for what is available now; an owned game is not automatically streamable. Streaming avoids a full local download, but play still depends on a supported device, an eligible account or membership and a suitable connection.
| Option | What you need | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Download and install | Compatible device, available storage, correct account entitlement | Game files are stored locally and can be launched after installation |
| Cloud stream | Supported title, compatible device, eligible account or membership, suitable connection | No full local download, but play depends on current cloud availability and network quality |
| Xbox app library view on Windows | Supported storefront integration | Shows installed games from multiple sources; visibility does not establish ownership |
When a game does not appear
Work through these checks in order so you can distinguish an account problem from a catalog or device restriction.
1. Confirm the Microsoft account
Compare the signed-in account with the account shown in Order history. A purchase made on one account will not normally appear as an owned download on another household account simply because both use the same console or PC. If several accounts are available, record which one placed the order before changing profiles.
2. Check the correct library location
On Xbox One, use My games & apps > Ready to install. On Windows, use Microsoft Store > My Library. The Xbox app’s aggregated view is not a replacement for either ownership library. A title can be installed and visible in the Xbox app while its actual license is managed elsewhere.

3. Check region availability
Microsoft lists country or region availability as a reason an item may not appear. A title available in one market may be unavailable in another, and changing the console or Windows region does not guarantee that the product can be bought or installed. Use the listing presented for your account and location.
4. Review family settings
Family settings can hide games or prevent a child account from viewing or installing them. If the account is supervised, the family organizer may need to approve the title or adjust the relevant restriction. Check these settings before assuming the Store search is broken.

5. Check whether the product was removed
A game can disappear because the product has been removed from the Store. In that case, search results and purchase options may no longer be available even if another account previously owned it. Use the purchasing account’s order record to separate a removed product from a mistaken account. An order record is evidence of the transaction, not a guarantee that a removed listing will return to every library view.
6. Verify device compatibility
Some titles are not compatible with every Xbox generation or Windows configuration. Read the current product listing for the supported platform and edition. A game visible in a cross-store library is not proof that it can run on the device you are using.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute7. Restart Windows after an update
Microsoft identifies a pending Windows restart after an update as a possible reason an installation does not appear or complete. Save your work, restart Windows, reopen Microsoft Store, and check My Library again. This step applies to the Windows Store path; it does not change account ownership or regional availability.
8. Recheck Store authorization
If the Store is not authorized under the signed-in Microsoft account, installation can fail even when another profile owns the game. Sign in with the purchasing account, verify the order, and retry from that account’s library. Do not use a general Xbox app listing as proof that the Store has authorized the current profile.

The game is listed, but there is no Download icon
First determine whether it is already installed, belongs to another account, or is only visible through an integrated storefront. Open the title’s product page and the purchasing account’s library rather than relying on the aggregated Xbox app list. On Windows, the absence of a Download icon can also mean the item is not offered for that device.
The game was purchased, but Ready to install is empty
Confirm the Xbox One profile, inspect Order history, and check region and product status. If the purchase is recorded but the title remains absent, device compatibility or removal from the Store may explain the difference. Make sure you are checking the Xbox library, not only the Xbox app’s recent list.

The title can be streamed but not downloaded
Use the cloud badge and the current product page to verify eligibility. Streaming and installation are separate capabilities: a cloud-playable owned title may still require a supported device, account status or membership, while another title may require a local download. Do not assume that the cloud badge applies to every edition of a franchise.

The Xbox app shows a game I cannot install
The app may be displaying an installed game from Battle.net, Game Pass or another supported PC storefront. Open that storefront or the Microsoft Store listing to check the actual license and platform requirements. The Xbox app’s library-extension setting controls visibility, not ownership.
A family member bought the game
Switch to the account that made the purchase and verify its order history. If a supervised account cannot see or install the title, review family settings with the organizer. A shared console does not make every account’s order history identical.
A concise decision checklist
- Identify your platform: Xbox console or Windows PC.
- Decide whether you are discovering a new title or retrieving a previous purchase.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- For Xbox One, check Store to browse or My games & apps > Ready to install to retrieve.
- For Windows, open Microsoft Store > My Library and select the Download icon.
- Read the exact product listing for edition, platform, region and compatibility information.
- If the game is missing, check account, region, family settings, product status, compatibility and Windows restart requirements.
- Use cloud streaming only when the title shows current cloud eligibility on a supported device.
- If the Xbox app lists a title without an install option, identify the storefront that actually owns or installed it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find a new game on Xbox One?
From Home, move down to Store, then browse Deals, a category such as Top free games, or Browse games. Open the exact product listing and follow its purchase, claim or install command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do I reinstall an Xbox game I bought digitally?
Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase, verify the transaction in Order history, then open My games & apps > Ready to install on Xbox One and select the game.
Where do I install Xbox games on Windows?
Open Microsoft Store, choose My Library, and select the Download icon beside the game. Microsoft says that icon identifies an app or game that has not yet been downloaded.
Why is a game missing from my Xbox library?
Check the purchasing account, Ready to install, region availability, family settings, product removal and device compatibility. On Windows, restart after pending updates and confirm Store authorization.
Does seeing a game in the Xbox app mean I own it?
No. The Windows Xbox app can aggregate installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other supported storefronts. Visibility does not prove ownership or install eligibility.
Can I stream an owned Xbox game instead of installing it?
Sometimes. On a supported console, check My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games for a cloud badge. Streaming depends on the title, device, account and current eligibility conditions.
The Bottom Line
Browse the Store to discover a title, use the purchasing Microsoft account and Ready to install to retrieve an Xbox One purchase, or use Microsoft Store > My Library on Windows. If a game is absent, verify entitlement first, then check region, family settings, product status, compatibility and pending Windows restarts. Treat the Xbox app as a library view across supported storefronts, and stream only when the current title page shows cloud eligibility.
