Start with the clearest melody you remember. Hum, whistle, or sing it into Google’s song search or SoundHound’s hum search. If you can replay the game audio, run a recognition tool on a clean section. Treat every result as a candidate: listen to the complete recording and verify it against the game’s soundtrack list, credits, and scene context. No general service is documented as covering every game, port, remix, short cue, or unreleased track.
Choose the method that matches the clue you have
Your best approach depends on whether you remember a melody, can replay the original audio, or know details about the game and scene. These clues lead to different candidate pools and require different verification.

Think of the task as two separate problems: generating candidates and proving which candidate is correct. A broad consumer catalog may suggest a related song, while a soundtrack list or per-game database gives you a smaller universe to check. Evidence can be a remembered melody, a replayable recording, metadata, or all three. The strongest identification is a matching recording plus corroborating game credits or track information.

Recognition services compare your input with material in their own catalogs. A plausible title is not proof that the catalog contains the exact game recording, and there is no authoritative current benchmark showing that one service has the highest hit rate on video game music.

1. Record the details before searching
Write down the information that can narrow a large soundtrack list. Do this before trying to remember the tune repeatedly, because context often separates several similar tracks.
- Game title, including sequel, remake, expansion, or regional name.
- Platform and approximate release period. A port can use a different arrangement or sound chip.
- Location, level, menu, character, boss, vehicle, or cutscene.
- What was happening when the music played: exploration, battle, victory, loading, a warning, or dialogue.
- Whether it was a continuous background loop, a short transition, a victory jingle, or a cutscene song.
- Any remembered instrument, vocal line, lyric fragment, tempo change, or unusual sound.
- Where you heard it now, such as an original console, emulator, stream, video, or soundtrack release.
- Approximate timestamp in a video, if one exists, and whether the sound repeated after a fixed interval.
These notes become search terms and help you reject a musically similar result that does not fit the scene. They also tell another listener whether you are looking for a conventional song, a looping level theme, or a two-second event cue.
2. Search a melody you can still hum
Use Google song search
On supported iPhone or iPad setups, Google’s current help instructions say to open the Google app, tap the microphone, choose Search a song, and then play a song or hum, whistle, or sing the melody. The service returns “potential matches,” not a certified identification.

- Review the suggested titles, then play the full candidates rather than accepting the first result.
Google’s 2020 product explanation described a typical humming attempt of 10–15 seconds and said the feature was initially available in English on iOS and in more than 20 languages on Android. Those are launch-era details, not a current guarantee; app labels, languages, and availability can change. If your current app uses different wording, follow its present instructions.
Try SoundHound as a second melody search
SoundHound documents both identifying music that is playing and starting a hum search. Its help example uses the prompt “What song am I humming?” Use a different, distinctive phrase if the first service returns nothing. SoundHound’s own help says you can tell it that you are about to sing or hum a song stuck in your head. Agreement between two services is useful evidence, but it still does not establish that the suggested recording is the version used in your game.
Hum the part that carries identity
Choose a phrase with a recognizable contour: a repeated hook, a rising-and-falling motif, or a melody that returns after a short pause. Avoid an isolated drum beat, a sustained chord, or a section dominated by sound effects. If you remember only the rhythm, tap it while humming approximate notes; melody-search systems are designed around melodic similarity, so a rhythm alone may provide too little information.
Try the phrase in more than one way. A whistle may keep pitch steadier than a sung attempt; humming can be easier when you do not remember words. Start at the beginning of the motif rather than adding a long, uncertain lead-in. If you know a second phrase, run a separate search instead of combining two unrelated fragments.

How melody search turns a hum into candidates
Google’s October 15, 2020 explanation says its system converts a hummed query into a number-based representation of the melody. It discounts details such as accompaniment and the singer’s voice timbre, then compares that representation with songs to produce possible matches. This explains why a rough hum can work even when you do not reproduce the original synthesizer or vocalist. It does not mean every melody is in the catalog or that a result is automatically the game recording.
That distinction matters for game music. A recognizer may match the underlying composition to a polished album version, a cover, or a later arrangement. Treat the returned title as a lead for the next search, not as a final answer.
3. Recognize the original game audio when you can replay it
A recording is a different input from a remembered tune. Play the cleanest available segment into a microphone-based recognizer, preferably where the melody is exposed and speech, effects, menu clicks, and transitions are quiet.
- Pause the game or video at a section with stable music.
- Move away from speakers, fans, and other noise if possible.
- Let the track play without speaking near the microphone.
- Avoid a section that fades in, fades out, loops at a transition, or contains a sound effect over the main motif.
- Run the recognizer and note every candidate, including the artist, album, and version information.
- Repeat with another clean section if the result is missing or inconsistent.
Do not assume that a longer clip is always better. The reviewed official instructions do not establish a guaranteed minimum clip length or a success rate for game music. A short cue, heavily compressed stream, or audio mixed with dialogue may simply produce no result or a related commercial recording. A clean, melodically exposed passage is more useful than a noisy section of arbitrary duration.
If you control playback, lower dialogue and effects, stop menu navigation, and capture a section before the loop changes. Do not edit the audio so aggressively that you remove the melody’s attack or timing. Keep the original clip as evidence even if you make a quieter copy for recognition.
4. Narrow the candidates with game and scene searches
Text search becomes more powerful after you know the game and where the music appears. Combine the title with terms such as soundtrack, OST, track list, music, credits, the level or scene name, and any remembered lyric or instrument.
Search in layers
- Search the exact game title plus
soundtrackorOST. - Add the level, menu, boss, character, or cutscene name.
- Search the title with
creditsand inspect composer or music-staff information. - Check official soundtrack releases and tracklists when they exist.
- Compare platform-specific lists for the original release, ports, remakes, and regional editions.
- If the game has a long soundtrack, search distinctive descriptive terms such as
ice level music,final boss theme, or a remembered lyric.
Search the exact scene as well as the general game. A title may have separate names for a level loop, a boss transition, and a cutscene song. Video descriptions, credit rolls, soundtrack liner notes, and official album pages can each supply a different part of the answer.

There is no single verified official catalog for every game. A fan-maintained list can reveal a track name, but corroborate it with audio and, when possible, credits or an official release. If two lists disagree, record the alternate names and check which one belongs to your platform and region.

Identification is complete only when the candidate matches both the sound and the context. Listen beyond the snippet supplied by a recognition app.
- Melodic contour: Do the notes rise, fall, repeat, and resolve in the same order?
- Rhythm and structure: Does the loop length, break, bridge, or ending occur where you remember it?
- Instrumentation: Are the same synth voices, drums, samples, vocals, or orchestral parts present?
- Mix and quality: Does the game version have chip-limited, compressed, mono, or otherwise altered audio?
- Context: Is the track documented for the level, menu, character, or cutscene you recorded?
- Release identity: Is it an arrangement, remix, rerecording, soundtrack bonus, or a version from another platform?
A commercial album can contain a polished rerecording while the game uses a shorter loop or a different mix. Name the recording precisely only after comparing those details. When the composition is identical but the audio differs, report both facts: identify the theme and specify the in-game version.
Why game music is harder to identify than a radio song
Short cues and loops
Victory jingles, menu stingers, transition sounds, and background loops may be too brief or structurally repetitive for a broad catalog match. Search the exact event or scene and inspect complete soundtrack lists rather than assuming every piece is a conventional song.
Ports and alternate arrangements
The same composition can differ between an original cartridge, an arcade release, a later console port, a remake, and a modern soundtrack album. Sound hardware, samples, tempo, and loop points may all change. Platform and release details are therefore part of the identification, not optional trivia.

Some cues never appear on a commercial OST. In that case, a recognition app may return a related composition—or nothing—because its candidate catalog does not contain the recording. Game credits, extracted track names, archival recordings, and knowledgeable communities can be more useful than a general music catalog.
Mixed audio
Gameplay recordings often combine music with dialogue, effects, crowd noise, compression, and platform streaming artifacts. Isolate a cleaner section, lower competing audio, and try more than one segment before concluding that the track cannot be recognized.

A reliable fallback when automatic recognition fails
- Write a compact description: game, platform, scene, approximate year, tempo, instruments, and whether it loops.
- Hum the longest distinctive phrase you can reproduce, rather than a generic opening.
- Try the same phrase in Google song search and SoundHound’s hum search.
- Replay the game audio and capture a cleaner passage without speech or effects.
- Search the game title with scene and soundtrack terms, then inspect every plausible track.
- Compare arrangements from the original release, ports, remakes, and official albums.
- Post the details to a game-specific music community if needed, following that community’s rules. Include the platform, scene, approximate timestamp, a short recording or melody description, and candidates already ruled out.
Ask for identification rather than posting only a broad request such as “What is this song?” Precise context lets other players distinguish a level loop from a cutscene cue or a port-specific arrangement. Include a private or permitted clip when rules allow it, but do not assume a community can identify material that was never released or documented.
What a constrained music database can—and cannot—tell you
The 2024 NES Video-Music Database (NES-VMDB) illustrates why catalog scope matters. Cardoso, Moraes, and Ferreira report a dataset containing 98,940 gameplay videos from 389 NES games. It pairs 4,070 music pieces with gameplay clips and extends the NES-MDB, which the paper reports as containing 5,278 pieces from 397 NES games.
The authors used a Shazam-like audio-fingerprinting implementation against candidate tracks in a per-game database. That is a bounded study workflow: the system searches a known collection associated with particular games. It demonstrates how matching can work when the candidate universe is deliberately constrained; it does not measure the coverage or accuracy of consumer apps on arbitrary game soundtracks, nor does it include every NES track. The numbers describe those datasets, not the total number of NES songs or a guarantee that a commercial recognizer can identify them.

How to report a confident identification
Record the game title, release or platform, scene, track title, composer or credited artist, and the exact version you heard. If an app supplied the title, describe it as a candidate until the audio and metadata agree. A useful final note might distinguish “the original console loop” from “the extended album arrangement” instead of treating both as interchangeable.
For a particularly obscure cue, state what remains uncertain: the composition may be clear while the precise port, mix, or internal track name is not. This is more useful than presenting a related soundtrack release as definitive.
