You can usually follow a politician’s or candidate’s regular public posts without buying a subscription. Start at the figure’s official government, legislative, campaign, or personal website, use its social links to identify the genuine account, then follow that account on the platform. A paid subscription may unlock bonus or subscriber-only posts, but it does not normally replace access to ordinary public posts. On X, public posts can be viewed even without an account, and X says non-subscribers continue seeing a creator’s regular posts after following.
What “public posts” and “early access” mean
Social platforms separate ordinary public updates from material restricted to subscribers, members, or approved followers. A political figure might publish a statement, video, or announcement publicly and also offer a paid subscription containing bonus commentary, private replies, or posts released only to subscribers. Those are different access categories.
Paying is therefore not the default way to follow a public official. The reliable free route is to identify the official account, follow it, and use the platform’s available feed or notification controls. You may still encounter a prompt to subscribe when a post, reply, or feature is restricted; that prompt does not mean all of the account’s posts require payment.

- It can: add the account’s regular posts to the platform’s feed and make new updates easier to find.
- It cannot: unlock subscriber-only posts, subscriber-only replies, or content hidden by a protected-account setting.
- It does not guarantee: that every post appears in chronological order or that an algorithm will show every update.
Find the legitimate account before you follow
Search results and display names are not proof of identity. Impersonators can use the same name, a similar photograph, or a handle that differs by one character. Verify the account first, particularly when the person is a nationally prominent official or a candidate with many fan and parody accounts.

Use an official website as your starting point
- Open the figure’s official government, legislative, campaign, or personal website.
- Look for its social-media icons, “Contact,” “Media,” or similar section.
- Open the linked profile and compare the account’s handle, biography, profile image, and description with the information on the official site.
- Check that the social profile links back to the same official site or to a clearly related institutional page.
This cross-link is stronger evidence than a search result alone because it connects the account to a source controlled by the office, campaign, or individual. For an officeholder, an official legislative or government directory can provide an additional identity check.
Search with the full name and office
If the official site does not list every platform, search the person’s full name together with the office or institution—for example, the person’s name plus a legislature, ministry, city, or district. Examine the handle and biography rather than relying only on the large display name. Compare the spelling, current office, location, and links in the profile.
Be careful with common names, former officeholders, and candidates who share a surname. A profile that has no connection to an official site or institution should be treated as unverified until you can confirm it through another trusted public source.

Follow normally
Once the identity checks out, select the platform’s Follow control. On X, X says accounts and Topics you follow help determine what appears in the Home timeline. Lists and other feed features can also help organize accounts, although the exact controls and labels may change.
Following is a direct signal of interest, but it is not a promise of complete delivery. Home timelines and recommendation systems use multiple signals, so posts may be ranked, mixed with other material, or shown later rather than in strict posting order.

Use notifications only if you need prompt alerts
Many platforms offer a notification setting for an account or for individual posts. Enabling it can help when you need to notice statements quickly, but the menu name, available levels, and behavior vary by platform and app version. Look for the account’s notification or bell control and review the choices shown in your current app rather than following an old button-by-button guide.
Notifications are optional. Following the account remains the basic free method, and turning on alerts may produce more messages than you want if the account posts frequently.

How access works on X
Public posts are viewable without payment
X’s Help Center describes public posts as visible to anyone, whether or not the person viewing them has an X account. That makes X unusual among major social platforms: a reader can open a public post without first creating an account. An account is still useful if you want to follow the author, organize accounts, or receive notifications.
An account can instead be protected. Protected posts are visible only to approved followers, so a person who is not accepted cannot read them simply by finding the profile. Protection is an account-visibility setting, not a subscription price.
Subscriptions add restricted material, not a paywall over everything
X describes creator subscriptions as a way to provide bonus content and exclusive posts. Its Help Center states: “If someone has a Subscription offering and you don’t purchase the Subscription, you’ll continue to see their regular posts by following them as you normally would.”

In practice, a non-subscriber can follow the account and read its ordinary posts. Subscriber-only posts and subscriber-only replies remain restricted. Some otherwise public posts may also limit who can reply—for example, to subscribers—without making the post itself invisible.
A subscription prompt therefore needs to be read in context. If the individual post is labeled as subscriber-only, payment is required for that item. If it is a normal public post, following the account is the free access route.
Badges are clues, not identity proof
X’s current labels guidance says a blue checkmark may indicate an active paid subscription. It does not, by itself, establish the former standards of being notable, active, and authentic. A grey checkmark indicates a government, multilateral, or official account, but you should still compare the profile with an official website or institutional listing.
Do not infer that a blue checkmark proves a political account is genuine, and do not infer that the absence of a blue checkmark proves it is fake. Cross-links, consistent biographical details, and confirmation from a trusted institution are more useful identity checks.
Public-interest notices can reduce distribution
X may attach a public-interest notice to a post. X says such a notice can reduce the ability to like, repost, or share the post and can prevent algorithmic recommendation while leaving the post available to view and discuss. That is a visibility or engagement limitation, not evidence that the reader must pay.

If you can open a post directly but do not see it in recommendations, a public-interest notice, ranking decision, or another platform control may explain the difference. Payment does not remove every distribution limit.
Instagram and Threads: following matters more than recommendations
Meta announced on February 9, 2024, and updated the announcement on April 1, 2024, that Instagram and Threads would not proactively recommend political content from accounts a person does not follow in recommendation surfaces. Meta said this change did not alter how content from accounts people choose to follow is shown.
The practical implication is important: searching for a political figure and waiting for the platform to recommend that account is less dependable than finding the verified account yourself and following it. The announcement describes policy at that time, not a guarantee that every current screen, setting, or ranking behavior in 2026 is identical. Check the controls and notices in your present app before relying on a particular recommendation setting.
What is not established by the available platform guidance

- Check the account’s visibility. Determine whether it is public, protected, or presenting a subscriber-only item. These settings affect access differently.
- Follow the account. Use the platform’s standard Follow control. On X, this helps the account and its posts influence Home.
- Organize high-priority accounts. If the service offers Lists, favorites, or a dedicated following feed, use those tools to separate officials from unrelated recommendations.
- Enable alerts if timing matters. Use the current account or post notification control, and adjust it if the volume becomes excessive.
- Recheck the source when identity changes. Officials may leave office, change campaign pages, or move to a different handle. Update your follow list when the official website publishes a new link.

Why a post may be missing even when you did not need to pay
The post is subscriber-only
A label identifying subscriber-only content means the author restricted that item. You can continue following the account for regular posts, but the restricted item requires the platform’s stated subscription.

The account is protected
Protected posts are limited to approved followers. Request access through the platform if the account accepts requests; paying for a separate creator subscription does not automatically bypass an account-protection decision.
The platform did not rank it into your feed
Following affects what a platform considers relevant, but Home feeds and recommendation systems are not complete chronological archives. Open the profile directly when you need to check recent posts, and use a list or following-only view if the service provides one.
A public-interest notice limited distribution

Political figures may delete posts, switch handles, leave office, or move activity to a campaign or institutional account. Return to the official website or institution to confirm the current account rather than relying on an old bookmark or repost.
How to avoid impersonation and misleading “early access” claims
- Do not buy a subscription merely to verify identity. A paid badge or subscription is not a substitute for an official cross-link.
- Check the exact handle. Small spelling changes, extra punctuation, and added numbers can signal an impersonator.
- Compare links and biography. An authentic profile should have details consistent with the official source and the person’s current role.
- Inspect the original post. Screenshots and reposts can omit a subscriber label, warning, or context visible on the original profile.
- Separate urgency from access. A post being described as “early access” does not mean every update from that figure is paid. Determine whether the specific item is marked restricted.
What to do when recommendations are unreliable
Build a deliberate following list instead of depending on the platform to discover political accounts for you. Keep the official source for each account in your notes, group accounts by office or jurisdiction when the platform supports lists, and review the profile directly during major events. This approach is especially useful on Instagram and Threads because Meta’s 2024 announcement addressed recommendation surfaces for political accounts a person does not already follow.
For fast-moving events, combine a following feed with optional notifications, but expect to adjust settings as the app changes. Neither method is a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery: posts can be deleted, restricted, down-ranked, or affected by moderation rules.
Bottom line for readers who do not want to pay
Find the political figure through an official website or institution, verify the linked social profile, and follow it directly. On X, public posts are available without an account, and X says non-subscribers still see a creator’s regular posts after following. Subscription-only posts, protected accounts, recommendation limits, and public-interest notices are separate restrictions; none should be mistaken for a requirement to pay for every update.
