A broken backlink is an inbound link from another website to a URL on your site that no longer works as intended. Find candidates in Google Search Console and, when you need referring-page details, a specialist backlink report; then open each URL yourself, verify its HTTP response and redirect chain, and choose one of three repairs: restore the original page, permanently redirect it to a closely matching replacement, or leave a genuine 404/410 when no equivalent exists. Do not redirect unrelated URLs to your homepage just to remove errors.
What a broken backlink is—and what it is not
A backlink is a link from an external site to your site. It is broken when the linked destination on your site is missing, misconfigured, or otherwise fails to deliver the content a visitor reasonably expects. The referring page may still be live; the failure is at the destination.
This is different from a broken outbound link on one of your own pages. An outbound-link audit checks links you publish to other sites. A broken-backlink audit checks external pages that point into your site, especially URLs returning not-found responses or unsuitable redirects.

What you need before making a fix
- The candidate destination URL: the exact path that the external link targets, including capitalization, trailing slash, parameters, and file extension.
- The referring page: where the link appears, its anchor text, and the surrounding sentence or section. Relevance determines whether a replacement will help a visitor.
- The current response: the status returned by the URL, the rendered page, and every hop in a redirect chain.
- The content decision: whether the original page should exist, has moved to a specific equivalent, or has been retired without a comparable successor.
- Access to your web server or CMS: needed to restore a page, create a redirect, or configure a proper 404/410 response.
Keep the original URL and the evidence that led you to it. Reports can change after the provider crawls the referring page or follows the redirect again.
Where to find broken backlinks
Google Search Console: the free starting point
- Open the verified property in Google Search Console.
- Select Links in the left navigation.
- Review the external-link sections and the pages receiving links. Export the available rows if you need to work through a large list.
- Match receiving-page URLs against your site’s known 404 and 410 URLs, URL migrations, and deleted content.
Google says the Links report contains links it has found over time; it is not a real-time, exhaustive census of every link on the web. Its rows may not include the referring URL, anchor, or context needed to judge a repair. Read Google’s description of the report at Search Console Help: Links report.
A specialist broken-backlink report
A backlink analysis platform can be useful when you have many URLs or need the external page itself. Ahrefs documents a Broken backlinks report that lists referring pages linking to a site’s 404 destinations, along with anchor text and surrounding text. Its Best by links workflow can be filtered for HTTP 404 destinations and then expanded to the external pages that link to them; the procedure is described in this Ahrefs Help article.
Such a report is a convenience, not a guarantee of ranking value or complete coverage. Crawling frequency, blocked pages, nofollow attributes, redirects, and the provider’s index all affect what appears. Pricing and crawl freshness vary by provider and plan; no universal price or recrawl interval is established here.

Use Search Console as the baseline for Google’s view, and add a specialist report when the missing referring-page detail justifies it. Combining lists is sensible, but deduplicate URLs before changing your site.

Step-by-step: find, verify, and prioritize candidates
1. Build a candidate list
Export or copy destination URLs from Search Console and any specialist report. Normalize obvious duplicates without changing meaning: preserve query strings when they affect routing, and keep separate records for HTTP and HTTPS if your server treats them differently. Add columns for status, final URL, referring page, anchor text, topical relevance, and chosen action.
2. Inspect the destination URL directly
- Paste the exact URL into a browser and note what a normal visitor sees.
- Use your server logs, hosting panel, or an HTTP inspection tool to confirm the response status. A browser’s error page alone is not sufficient.
- Record each redirect hop and the final status. A 301 or 308 that ends at a relevant page is different from a chain that ends at another redirect, a 404, or an unrelated page.
- In Search Console, open URL Inspection, enter the URL, and use the available live test to check Google’s current fetchability. Google’s crawling-error guidance explains how to distinguish a real not-found response from a soft 404: Troubleshoot Google Search Crawling Errors.
Do this verification before editing redirects. A report can be stale, can reflect a temporary crawl failure, or can have followed a different version of the URL than the one you tested.

3. Read the referring page
Open the external page and locate the link. Determine what the reader was promised: a definition, download, study, product detail, tutorial step, or another specific resource. A generic anchor such as “click here” provides little context; the surrounding paragraph may still reveal the intended topic. Also check whether the link is visible to ordinary visitors, blocked by a login, or marked with attributes that affect how search engines treat it. These details help you decide whether a replacement is worth creating.
4. Prioritize for people first
Start with links whose referring pages are accessible, topically relevant, and likely to send a visitor who would benefit from the destination. Link counts and third-party authority scores are triage clues, not proof of ranking impact. A single highly relevant reference can deserve attention before dozens of unrelated links.
- High priority: a relevant referring page, a useful former destination, and a clear replacement or restoration path.
- Medium priority: a relevant link but little evidence of current traffic, or a destination requiring content decisions.
- Low priority: scraped, spammy, inaccessible, or context-free pages with no useful visitor path.
Do not promise that fixing a URL will recover a particular amount of ranking or “link equity.” Outcomes depend on the referring page, Google’s processing, relevance, and many other signals.

Choose the right repair

Choose restoration when the page was deleted accidentally, a migration omitted it, or the referring context is still valid. Recreate the content with the same subject and a stable URL. Confirm that internal links, canonical signals, structured data, images, and access controls work as they did before. A restored page that returns 200 but contains only a generic error message is a soft 404, not a successful repair.
Redirect to a close replacement
Map the old URL to the most closely matching current page—not merely to the nearest surviving URL. Preserve important path or language distinctions. Apply one direct permanent redirect where possible, then test the old URL from an external connection. Google advises avoiding unnecessary redirect chains; a chain such as old URL → intermediate URL → final URL adds failure points and can delay processing.
Update your own internal links and XML sitemaps to use the final URL. Keep the old-to-new rule long enough for users and crawlers to encounter it, and document the mapping so a later redesign does not remove it accidentally.
Return a real 404 or 410
If no page can satisfy the original intent, do not invent a substitute. Configure the server or CMS to return a 404 (not found) or 410 (gone), display a helpful error page with navigation, and remove the dead URL from your own sitemaps and internal navigation. A third-party backlink may remain in its publisher’s archive; that is not a reason to manufacture irrelevant content.

Implement the change without creating new errors
For a restored page
- Publish the page at the exact former path.
- Check desktop and mobile rendering, assets, forms, and authentication rules.
- Confirm the server returns 200 for the intended variants and does not generate a soft 404.
- Update internal links that still point to a different replacement or obsolete path.
For a redirect
- Create a server- or application-level 301/308 rule for the old URL.
- Point it directly to the most relevant final URL.
- Retain query parameters only when your application uses them meaningfully; test tracking and campaign parameters separately.
- Check that HTTP-to-HTTPS, hostname, trailing-slash, and language rules do not add extra hops.
- Verify that the final page returns 200 and clearly fulfills the referring page’s promise.
For a 404/410
- Return the chosen status at the server level, not a 200 response with an error message.
- Provide useful navigation, search, and an explanation for human visitors.
- Remove the URL from XML sitemaps and fix your own links to it.
- Keep an exception log if the URL is likely to be requested again, so a future redesign does not accidentally route it to the homepage.
Validate the result and watch for recrawls
- Request the original URL with a browser and an HTTP checker. Record status, headers, and the final destination.
- Confirm there is no redirect loop, mixed-protocol hop, or unnecessary intermediate URL.
- Open the final page as a visitor and compare it with the referring page’s wording and intent.
- Run URL Inspection in Search Console for a restored or replacement URL and request indexing when appropriate; indexing is not guaranteed.
- Recheck your server logs and backlink report after the relevant crawlers have had time to revisit the pages.
Provider reports can change when a crawler revisits the referring page or follows a redirect chain. Google’s documentation on crawling errors and redirects explains why a report status and your current response may differ. A backlink marked as a broken redirect even though it works can result from the provider seeing an earlier chain, a blocked hop, or a response that changes by user agent; the failure modes are discussed in this Ahrefs Help article.

The report says 404, but the URL opens normally
Test the exact protocol, hostname, capitalization, slash pattern, and query string shown in the report. Then inspect every redirect hop and test from a location or user agent that is not logged in. If your current response is valid, record the evidence and wait for the provider’s next crawl rather than adding a duplicate redirect.
The page shows an error but returns 200
Fix the application or server so a missing resource returns 404 or 410, or publish the intended content and return 200. Leaving a soft 404 makes diagnostics ambiguous and can cause crawlers to treat the page as an error despite the success code.
The old URL redirects, but the tool still calls it broken
Check for more than one hop, temporary 3xx responses, blocked robots access, inconsistent HTTP and HTTPS behavior, or a final page that returns 4xx/5xx. A direct permanent redirect to a relevant, successful page is the cleanest configuration. If your live test is correct, the tool may simply be displaying an older crawl.
There is no relevant replacement
Leave a genuine 404/410 and improve the error page. Creating a thin article or redirecting to the homepage solely because a backlink exists usually gives visitors less useful information than an honest not-found response.

The referring page is spam, scraped, or inaccessible
Do not reshape your site around an untrustworthy link. Fix the destination only when it serves legitimate users or a sound content plan. Keep the URL in your monitoring notes if it produces repeated requests, but do not treat its link count as a reason to create unrelated pages.
The backlink disappeared rather than pointing to a 404
A lost link is a different diagnosis: the external publisher may have removed the link, changed the page, or replaced the target. Review the referring page and the provider’s reason before changing your site. Ahrefs describes common “link lost” reasons in Understanding ‘link lost’ reasons. Recreating a deleted destination will not restore a link that the publisher intentionally removed.
How to reclaim lost value responsibly
Reclamation means restoring a useful destination or mapping it to a genuinely equivalent page so an existing reference works again. It does not mean manufacturing redirects for every historical URL. For each candidate, ask:
- Would a reader following the link receive what the referring sentence promises?
- Does the replacement cover the same subject, audience, and language or region?
- Can the old URL reach it in one direct permanent redirect?
- Will the change remain correct after the next site migration?
If any answer is no, a 404/410 or a content restoration decision is safer than a broad redirect. No fixed amount of ranking benefit can be promised from reclamation.
Prevent future broken backlinks
- Keep a URL inventory during redesigns and migrations, including retired URLs that have external references.
- Export Search Console’s Links report periodically and compare it with your 404/410 logs.
- Use server logs to identify repeatedly requested missing URLs, then investigate their referring context.
- Test redirect maps in a staging environment for loops, chains, protocol changes, and language mistakes.
- Update internal links and sitemaps whenever a page moves; do not rely on redirects for links you control.
- Review high-value external references after major navigation, domain, or CMS changes.
- Keep a dated change log with the old URL, response before the change, action taken, final URL, and validation result.
Limits you should expect from backlink reports
Search Console and third-party indexes answer different questions and are collected at different times. Neither is guaranteed to list every backlink, identify every current status, or predict a ranking outcome. A link count is not the same as a useful visitor, and a high third-party score is not proof that a redirect is justified. The reliable unit of work is the individual URL: verify it, understand the referring context, choose the least misleading repair, and test the result.
