To find optional quests in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, talk to townspeople and villagers as you explore. An exclamation point in a character’s speech bubble signals a quest, according to Nintendo’s Play Nintendo guide. When you have accepted a quest, press the Minus button to open the Adventure Log: it records quests you have started and finished, and many entries offer hints and a map or minimap marker for the next destination.

If a quest stalls, use its log entry to identify the relevant person or place, inspect the surroundings, and try abilities or items you recently acquired. Some optional quests depend on progress elsewhere, so a missing clue may mean you need to advance a story milestone rather than search the same spot indefinitely.

What counts as an optional quest in Tears of the Kingdom?

“Optional quest” is a useful everyday phrase, but it does not name just one in-game category. Side Quests, Side Adventures, and Shrine Quests are distinct categories. They are not interchangeable, and the kind of task, its likely scale, and its rewards can differ.

Category What to expect Published count in the cited guide
Side Quests Generally smaller tasks. Nintendo Life describes them as less likely than Side Adventures to carry the same narrative stakes or involve key characters. Rewards can include rupees, items, or armor. 139 Side Quests — Nintendo Life, June 16, 2023.
Side Adventures Usually longer, more story-linked quests involving important NPCs or special rewards. Some unlock useful features or lead to other optional content. 60 Side Adventures — Nintendo Life, June 16, 2023.
Shrine Quests A separate quest category associated with shrine-related objectives. The cited material does not establish a comparable total. No verified total stated in the cited material.

The two counts are figures reported by Nintendo Life in 2023, not totals published by Nintendo. They help describe the size of those two categories, but they are not a complete checklist or a universal measure of 100% completion. The sources cited here do not establish a verified Shrine Quest total.

Optional does not always mean inconsequential. A Side Adventure may be optional to the main story while still opening a useful upgrade or providing a prerequisite for another optional chain. For instance, Nintendo Life’s Side Adventures guide identifies “Serenade to a Great Fairy” as a prerequisite for access to many Great Fairies. Side Quests can also offer worthwhile rewards without being required for the main story.

How to find quest givers while exploring

Talk to peaceful characters

Conversations are the main discovery method Nintendo highlights. Speak with villagers, townspeople, and other peaceful characters you encounter, especially when they mention a local problem, a request, a person who needs help, or something unusual nearby. Nintendo’s beginner guide, “Beginning Your Journey,” describes talking with peaceful characters as an important way to learn details and acquire new objectives.

Look for the exclamation point in a character’s speech bubble. Play Nintendo’s “Time to tackle Hyrule?” guide says that this cue indicates a character has a quest for you. It is a useful sign, not a reason to ignore everyone else: talking to characters without the cue can still provide context or clues about a place and its problems.

Search places you have not visited

Keep exploring unfamiliar parts of Hyrule rather than relying on a single route. Nintendo recommends talking with characters, searching places you have not visited, and experimenting with Link’s abilities and Zonai devices. Since players may take different paths through the world, you can encounter quests in a different order from another player or guide.

When returning to a region, talk with local characters again if the story has moved forward. A person who had nothing new to ask before a milestone may have a different request afterward. This is especially worth trying when a quest chain seems absent rather than merely difficult: progress elsewhere can affect which objectives are available.

Follow local hints before searching at random

When someone points to a location, object, or nearby concern, treat the conversation as a lead. Look around the named area, check the immediate surroundings, and note whether other characters refer to the same issue. A clue may direct you to a place to investigate rather than giving you a step-by-step solution. Nintendo’s advice is to explore and experiment, not to expect every objective to explain every action.

Where to see active quests and their next objectives

Press the Minus button to open the Adventure Log. Nintendo Support’s “General Tips for Playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” says the log lets you review quests you have started and finished, and that many entries include hints or reminders for completing them. Choose the relevant quest entry and read its current objective before setting off again.

Nintendo’s beginner guide explains that a quest’s next objective can be marked with a circle on the map and minimap. Use that marker as a destination cue, then read the written hint as well: the marker narrows down where to go, while the text can clarify what the game expects you to do there. A circle identifies the objective area; it does not necessarily tell you which object, person, or ability will solve the task.

The log is most useful when you revisit it as the quest changes. If you complete an objective or learn new information, check the entry again before continuing. This helps distinguish an unfinished step from a quest whose next clue lies somewhere else. It also gives you a way to review finished quests without relying on memory.

A practical workflow for finding and finishing a quest

  1. Start conversations. Speak with villagers, townspeople, and peaceful characters. Watch for the exclamation-point speech bubble and listen for requests or references to local problems.
  2. Explore beyond familiar routes. Visit unfamiliar areas and pay attention to villages, stables, and other places where people may have requests. If a quest chain is not available, continue the main story and revisit the location after a milestone.
  3. Check the Adventure Log. Press Minus, select the quest, and read its current hint or reminder. Use the map and minimap circle to locate the marked destination.
  4. Investigate the clue. Return to the person or place named in the entry. Talk to nearby characters, inspect the surroundings, and consider whether a recent item, ability, or Zonai device could help.
  5. Check for a dependency. If no new clue appears, consider whether another quest or story milestone comes first. The Great Fairy serenade chain is one documented example of an optional adventure that leads into later optional content.
  6. Look up the exact quest if you remain stuck. Search using the quest’s precise title so that a walkthrough for a similarly named task does not send you down the wrong path.
  7. Check the game’s update status if progress appears impossible. Nintendo has documented historical fixes for progression issues in named quests and adventures. An update check is a reasonable troubleshooting step, not proof that a particular problem is a known current bug.

What to do when an optional quest stalls

Read the current log entry again

Start by comparing the written objective with what you have actually done. A remembered conversation or an earlier step may no longer describe the current goal. The Adventure Log can supply a hint or reminder, and its destination marker can show whether the next target is in a different place from the one you have been searching.

Return to the named person or place

If the entry points to an NPC or location, revisit it and speak with relevant characters nearby. A quest can depend on a conversation or a clue at the site, so simply arriving at the marked area may not complete the objective. Pay attention to dialogue and changes in the surroundings rather than assuming that the marker itself is the solution.

Study the environment and try recent abilities

Nintendo’s beginner guide advises studying the area and using trial and error. Progress often hinges on items or abilities acquired recently, so think about what Link can now do that he could not do earlier. The same general approach applies to Zonai devices: consider whether one could interact with the problem described by the clue.

Experiment in a deliberate order instead of repeating one action without checking the result. Re-read the hint, identify what in the environment seems relevant, try an ability or item that fits, and then check whether the quest objective changed. If it did, return to the Adventure Log for the next step. This uses the game’s feedback to narrow the problem without assuming every quest follows the same pattern.

Consider story and quest prerequisites

Some objectives are part of a chain. If an expected character, event, or follow-up is missing, check whether another named quest or a main-story milestone must come first. For example, Nintendo Life’s Side Adventures list places later Great Fairy serenades after “Serenade to a Great Fairy.” That example illustrates a dependency; it does not mean every stalled quest has the same cause.

Use a quest-specific walkthrough as a last resort

Nintendo’s support tips recommend online walkthroughs if you remain stuck. Search the exact quest title shown in your Adventure Log, then compare the walkthrough’s described step with your current objective. This reduces the chance of following directions for a task with a similar name or a later stage of the same chain. General quest-finding advice cannot supply the exact solution to every individual objective, because prerequisites and clues vary from quest to quest.

Could an update fix a progression problem?

Nintendo’s update history includes fixes for progression issues affecting named quests and adventures, including “Hateno Village Research Lab,” “Lurelin Village Restoration Project,” “Village Attacked by Pirates,” “The Incomplete Stable,” and “Seeking the Pirate Hideout.” Those notes document fixes in updates released in 2023. They are historical evidence that progression fixes have been issued; they do not establish that any of those quests is currently affected for all players, or that every apparent blocker is a bug.

If a quest seems impossible after you have followed its current objective and checked the relevant area, make sure the game is up to date before treating it as a software problem. Nintendo’s “How to Update The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” support page explains the update process. If the objective still does not advance, return to the log and verify the quest-specific steps rather than assuming an update will resolve it.

How to decide which optional quests to do first

There is no single best order for every player. Choose based on whether you want a quick task, a longer story, or a reward that supports other activities. The categories and typical rewards provide a useful guide, but they do not guarantee the reward or length of every individual quest.

  • Choose a Side Quest when you want a generally smaller objective or are looking for possible rupees, items, or armor.
  • Choose a Side Adventure when you want a longer, more story-linked chain or want to pursue unlocks such as Purah Pad features, inventory expansion, or clothing upgrades.
  • Prioritize prerequisites when a quest list or log points to an earlier step in a chain. Completing that step may open later optional content.
  • Keep the main story moving if a character or quest is not available yet. Nintendo recommends exploration and experimentation, and returning after a milestone can be more productive than searching the same area without new information.

These are ways to prioritize, not a claim that one category is necessary for the ending. Whether you are “finished” depends on your own goal: completing the main story, clearing the quest categories, or pursuing a particular set of rewards are different targets. The Nintendo Life counts of 139 Side Quests and 60 Side Adventures are useful dated references, but they should not be treated as a complete 100% tracker.

Keep the discovery and tracking tools in perspective

The Adventure Log helps you track quests you have started and finished, but it is not a replacement for exploring or paying attention to conversations. The discovery loop is simple: speak with people, follow their clues, inspect the place the game points you toward, and use the log to reorient yourself when you lose track. The speech-bubble cue helps identify quest givers, while the map marker and written hint help with objectives after a quest begins.

For Nintendo’s own advice, “General Tips for Playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” “Beginning Your Journey,” and “Time to tackle Hyrule?” cover quest tracking, exploration, and talking to characters. Nintendo’s Explorer’s Guide is also available as a PDF. For a specific puzzle or prerequisite, use the exact quest title and current log objective to find a focused walkthrough.
