The reliable method is to identify the wallet account and blockchain first, then export that address’s activity from the network’s block explorer or from a wallet-compatible tax tool. The exact controls vary by wallet and chain. MetaMask, for example, does not offer a built-in CSV or PDF history export; it sends users to the relevant explorer instead.
Keep the original export, verify its address and network, and collect separate records for every wallet and exchange you used. Never provide a Secret Recovery Phrase or private key to obtain transaction history.
What a wallet transaction export actually contains
A crypto wallet is usually an interface for one or more blockchain addresses. The blockchain, not the app alone, records transfers, swaps, contract interactions, fees and timestamps. A wallet application may display several networks at once, so an export from one address on one chain is not automatically a complete history.
Most export routes produce one of two things:
- Raw on-chain activity: transactions associated with a public address, often including hashes, timestamps, assets, amounts, fees and counterparties as represented by the explorer.
- A calculated report: a tax or portfolio service that imports address activity and may classify transfers, swaps, income and disposals. It can add prices or basis information, but coverage depends on the service, chain and your other records.
Neither format should be assumed complete without checking the address, network, date range and transaction categories.

The general workflow for finding and exporting records
- List every wallet account and network. Record the wallet provider, account name, public address and chain (such as Ethereum, Base or another supported network). If you used multiple accounts, repeat the process for each address.
- Copy only the public address. Use the wallet’s copy-address control. A public address can identify activity, but it cannot by itself authorize spending. A Secret Recovery Phrase or private key can control assets and is never required for a history export.
- Open the correct block explorer. Use the wallet’s “View on” or equivalent link so the explorer matches the selected chain. Searching an address on the wrong network can produce an empty or misleading result.
- Choose the supported export. Look for a CSV, download, export or transaction-list control. If the wallet supports a compatible tax service, you can import the public address there instead, provided you trust the service and understand what it receives.
- Set and verify the scope. Check the address, chain, start and end dates, token categories, internal transactions, contract interactions and fee columns. Save the raw file before filtering or converting it.
- Reconcile all sources. Obtain records for other wallet addresses and for custodial exchanges. A wallet export and an exchange tax-center report are separate datasets.
MetaMask: export through a block explorer
MetaMask’s current guidance says the wallet has no built-in CSV or PDF transaction-history export. Its documented method is to open the account in the appropriate network explorer and use that explorer’s CSV function. MetaMask’s instructions are available at its transaction-history reporting guide.
Step-by-step MetaMask route
- Open MetaMask and select the account that contains the activity.
- Switch to the network whose records you need. An Ethereum address and a Base address may use the same hexadecimal format, but their activity is recorded on different chains.
- Open the account menu and choose the wallet’s “View on” link. This opens the explorer for the selected network; MetaMask gives Etherscan and BaseScan as examples.
- Confirm that the explorer page shows the same public address as MetaMask. Do not proceed if the address or network is different.
- Use the explorer’s transaction or account-history export control and select CSV when available. Explorer labels and placement can change, so verify the live interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Save the untouched CSV with a filename that includes the wallet label, address fragment, network and download date. Keep a second working copy for sorting or categorizing.
Using a tax service with MetaMask
MetaMask also describes importing a public account address into a third-party tax tool to generate CSV or PDF reports. This can be useful when you must combine several addresses or add pricing and tax classifications. Use a provider you have independently vetted, review its network coverage and permissions, and provide only the public address required by the workflow. A service should never ask for the Secret Recovery Phrase. MetaMask’s explicit warning is: “Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase with any platform, service, or individual.”
Coinbase Wallet and the current Base app
Coinbase’s wallet instructions refer to the current app experience as the Base app, with older references to Coinbase Wallet. The documented path is:
- Open Assets.
- Open Settings.
- Search for “Export public addresses”.
- Copy the public address or xPub shown for the account.
- Use supported tax software or another compatible provider to import that information and export the transaction report.
Coinbase notes that some networks may require another wallet provider. Before importing, verify that the service supports the specific chain and address type you use.
What sharing an address or xPub reveals
An address or extended public key (xPub) does not grant spending access, but it can reveal associated past and future activity. Share it only with a service you trust, and understand whether the provider stores, analyzes or redistributes that information. An xPub can represent a broader set of derived addresses than a single public address, so treat it as more revealing for privacy purposes.

If you use another wallet
There is no universal wallet-export button. Find the provider’s current official help page and look for terms such as transaction history, export CSV, tax report, public address or block explorer. Then apply the same checks:
- Is the export for the correct account and blockchain?
- Does it include token transfers, native-coin transfers, swaps, staking or contract interactions?
- Can it export a date range or only the currently displayed page?
- Does it include fees, transaction hashes and timestamps?
- Does the provider offer a read-only address import instead of requiring wallet credentials?
If the wallet only displays activity, copy the public address and use the explorer designated for that chain. Explorer support and file formats differ, so do not assume that a CSV from one network has the same columns or completeness as a CSV from another.

Use both when practical: preserve the explorer file as evidence and use a report only after confirming that its imports and assumptions match your records. No route is universally complete for every wallet, network or token.
How to check that an export is complete
Confirm the address and chain
Compare the address in the file or report with the address displayed by the wallet. Record the network separately; the same-looking address can have independent histories on different chains.
Check dates and transaction categories
Look at the earliest and latest timestamps, then inspect whether the file includes native transfers, token transfers, swaps, smart-contract calls, staking or lending activity, and network fees. Some explorers place token movements in separate tabs or exports.

Repeat for every wallet and account
Include hardware-wallet accounts, imported accounts, watch-only addresses and older addresses if they were used. A new wallet application does not erase activity that occurred at the address before it was imported.

Match transfers between your own addresses
A transfer from one wallet you control to another should appear in both address histories. Matching hashes and timestamps helps prevent counting an internal movement as income or a disposal in a later calculation.
Keep supporting valuation and ownership records
On-chain data can show what moved and when, but it may not show your acquisition price, fiat value at the time, ownership purpose or the identity of an off-chain counterparty. Keep exchange statements, purchase confirmations, staking records, invoices and contemporaneous valuation evidence with the raw export.
Security and privacy rules
- Never export with a seed phrase. A Secret Recovery Phrase, private key or wallet password is an authentication secret, not a recordkeeping credential. Close any service that requests one.
- Use read-only data. Prefer a public address or xPub workflow. Verify the website address and the provider’s security practices before uploading files or connecting an account.
- Limit disclosure. A public address can expose balances and historical and future activity when linked to your identity. Do not post it publicly merely to obtain help.
- Review permissions. If a service asks to connect a wallet, inspect the requested permissions and disconnect the integration when finished. A transaction-history import should not require permission to transfer funds.
- Protect the archive. Store raw CSV files and tax reports in encrypted storage with backups. Transaction histories can reveal substantial financial information even though they do not contain private keys.
Why a wallet export is not automatically a tax return
For US federal tax purposes, the Internal Revenue Service says taxpayers must retain records documenting purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges and other dispositions. Its digital-assets guidance states: “The Internal Revenue Code and regulations require taxpayers to maintain sufficient records to establish the positions taken on federal income tax returns.” See the IRS digital-assets guidance.

- transaction date and time;
- asset type;
- number of units;
- fair market value; and
- basis.
A blockchain CSV may contain the first three in some form, but it may not establish fair market value or basis. Fees, transfers between your own wallets, airdrops, staking income and wrapped or bridged assets can require additional documentation and interpretation. US rules are not universal tax advice; requirements differ by country and may change, so consult a qualified adviser for your jurisdiction.

Custodial exchanges maintain their own account ledgers and may provide downloadable tax documents, gain/loss summaries and raw transaction histories. Those reports cover activity on the exchange account, not automatically activity in a separate self-custody wallet.
Coinbase specifically states that its tax center reflects Coinbase.com activity and excludes Coinbase Wallet activity. If you used both, download both datasets and reconcile transfers between them. Do not treat an exchange statement as a complete history of addresses you controlled elsewhere.
Understanding Form 1099-DA timing
For US customers, Coinbase says its Form 1099-DA for the 2025 tax year reports gross proceeds for qualifying sales or exchanges, not net gains or an account balance. It says basis information begins with the 2026 tax year. The IRS describes broker gross-proceeds reporting for transactions from January 1, 2025, and basis reporting for certain transactions from January 1, 2026.
“Gross proceeds” is the amount reported from a qualifying transaction; it is not a statement of profit or taxable gain. These broker forms are scoped documents and do not replace records for unrelated self-custody wallets, other exchanges or transactions outside the form’s coverage.

Troubleshooting common export problems
The explorer shows no transactions
Check the network selector first. Then compare the copied address character by character with the wallet account. An address can be valid but inactive on that chain, or the activity may be represented in a token, internal-transaction or contract-events view rather than the default transfer tab.
The CSV is missing tokens or contract activity
Look for separate token-transfer, internal-transaction or contract-interaction exports. If the explorer does not expose the category, obtain the provider’s documented alternative or a compatible read-only tax importer and preserve the explorer page or hash list as supporting evidence.
The export stops at a date or row limit
Run multiple non-overlapping date ranges, or use the explorer’s pagination and custom-range controls. Name each file with its range and check for duplicate rows at the boundaries before combining them.
A tax report does not match the wallet total
Compare the imported address list, network list and date range. Look for unsupported chains, spam tokens, transfers between your own wallets, missing exchange imports and classifications that group several on-chain events into one line. Keep the raw explorer files so you can trace each adjustment to a transaction hash.
The wallet was restored on a new device
Restoring the same account does not create a new blockchain history. Use the restored account’s public address and repeat the explorer process. If the restore produced different accounts, check each derived address that you used previously.
A practical archive structure
Create one folder per tax year or reporting period, then use subfolders for each provider and network. A useful filename includes the account label, first and last address characters, chain, date range and source, for example main-0x12ab-0x89ef-ethereum-2024-01-01_to_2024-12-31-explorer.csv.
- Save the original download without editing it.
- Create a working copy for categorization and notes.
- Store screenshots or URLs only as supplementary evidence; the transaction hash and raw file should remain the primary reference.
- Maintain a simple address inventory showing which wallet, account and network each address belongs to.
- Back up the archive securely and restrict access to people who need the financial records.
Final checklist before you rely on the records
- Every relevant wallet account and blockchain is listed.
- Each export contains the intended date range and transaction categories.
- Public addresses match the wallet accounts; no seed phrase or private key was shared.
- Raw files are preserved before filtering or conversion.
- Wallet, exchange and tax-tool datasets are kept distinct and then reconciled.
- Basis, fair market value, fees and supporting receipts are documented where required.
- Any missing network or unsupported transaction type is clearly identified rather than silently omitted.
The Bottom Line
Start with the public address and the correct blockchain, use the wallet’s documented explorer or read-only tax-tool route, and preserve the raw files. MetaMask requires an explorer-based export, while Coinbase Wallet/Base uses public-address or xPub imports. Treat exchange tax forms as separate, limited records, and never provide a Secret Recovery Phrase for transaction history.
