Your Roku streaming player or Roku TV uses your home Wi-Fi password—not a separate password issued by Roku. Find the name and password of the wireless network you want the device to join, then enter that network password on Roku. It is case-sensitive.

Which password does Roku need?

For a Roku streaming player or Roku TV, use the password for your home wireless network. It is the same password you use to connect a phone, tablet, or computer to that Wi-Fi network. Your Roku account password is separate: changing it will not change or reveal the router’s Wi-Fi password. Roku explains which network name and password to use.

Find your Wi-Fi network name and password

Find the network name

  1. On a phone, tablet, or computer already connected to the home Wi-Fi, open its Wi-Fi settings and identify the connected network name.
  2. On Roku’s “Choose your network” screen, select the matching name. If it is missing, choose Scan again.
  3. If you still cannot identify the network, check the router’s label; its default network name may be printed there. If you need further help, contact your internet service provider (ISP) or router manufacturer.

Find the password

Use the same wireless password that a connected device uses. If you have forgotten it, check whether the router’s label lists a default password. If the password was changed or the label does not help, ask your ISP or router manufacturer about the recovery or reset method for your router. Roku’s network-password guidance directs users to those sources for router-specific help.

Connect Roku to Wi-Fi or change networks

  1. On the Roku remote, press Home.
  2. Go to Settings > Network > Set up connection.
  3. Choose Wireless, select the network you want, and enter its Wi-Fi password.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. If the network is not listed, choose Scan again.

When entering the password, match uppercase and lowercase letters exactly. Use Shift on the on-screen keyboard for capital letters. The password screen also lets you choose Show password or Hide password to check what you entered. Roku’s connection instructions cover setting up a wireless connection.

If Roku rejects the password or will not connect

A failed connection is not always a password problem. Roku’s UK support page maps wrong-password errors 14.40, 14.41, 14, and 014 to checking the Wi-Fi password and trying again. The same page lists separate error groups for weak signal, slow internet, Ethernet problems, and inability to reach the internet. Check Roku’s UK Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance; error-code guidance may vary by region.

  • Confirm that you selected the intended Wi-Fi network and entered its password accurately, including capitalization.
  • Try connecting a phone, tablet, or laptop to that same network. If it also cannot connect, the problem may be with the network rather than Roku.
  • If needed, unplug the Roku and router/modem, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect them.

Do streaming players and TVs require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?

Do not assume that Roku Smart Home camera or doorbell setup rules apply to Roku streaming players or TVs. Roku’s advanced networking guidance says a streaming device can use 5 GHz if both the router and Roku device support it. Some mesh systems show 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as one network name. See Roku’s guidance on advanced networking features.

Can you connect without entering a Wi-Fi password?

Some Roku players support a wired Ethernet connection, including through a USB adapter on supported models. Ethernet avoids entering a Wi-Fi password, but it requires compatible Roku hardware and a wired connection; adapter compatibility depends on the model. It is an alternative way to connect, not a way to recover a forgotten Wi-Fi password. Roku describes connection options here.
