Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
On most Rust server hosts, the file is at server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg. Open it with the host’s file manager or SFTP, keep each setting on its own line without a leading +, save a backup, and restart the server. Do not edit serverauto.cfg; it can be regenerated with defaults.
What server.cfg controls and where it belongs
server.cfg is a plain-text configuration file read by the Rust dedicated server during startup. Its location is normally relative to the server installation’s data directory:
server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg
Here, <identity> is the name assigned to that Rust instance. A host may use rust, a custom instance name, or another folder name, so do not assume that the directory is always literally rust. Open the server directory first and use the identity folder that contains the instance you actually run.
For example, one documented container layout uses the absolute path /home/container/server/rust/cfg/server.cfg. That path is useful as a pattern, not as a universal location: managed hosts place the same relative folders under different home directories, and self-managed Windows and Linux installations have their own install roots.

If your panel opens directly in a server folder, do not create a second nested server directory. Navigate into the existing identity folder, then cfg.
Open the file through your host panel
A web file manager is the least error-prone method when your host provides one because it already starts in the correct server container and preserves the account’s permissions.

- Open the panel’s Files, File Manager, or similarly named section.
- Open
server, then the folder for the Rust identity, thencfg. A host guide for Shockbyte describes this exact route through its Files tab. - Look for
server.cfg. Select it and choose Edit, Open, or the panel’s equivalent. - Copy the existing contents into a dated local backup before changing anything. Keep the original filename and extension in the panel.
- Make one logical group of changes, save the file, and verify that the saved timestamp or file contents changed.
- Restart the Rust server from the panel. A normal stop followed by start is preferable to assuming that a browser refresh applied the settings.
Some panels provide a separate Settings page that writes startup arguments. Treat those controls as a different configuration layer. If a value in the panel continues to win after you edit server.cfg, inspect that page before changing the file again.
Use SFTP when the panel editor is limited
SFTP is useful for downloading backups, editing with a local plain-text editor, or moving the same configuration between instances. A host must provide SFTP credentials and an address; the exact port and username are host-specific.

- Obtain the SFTP host, port, username, password or key, and the directory assigned to the Rust server.
- Connect with an SFTP client and open
server/<identity>/cfg. If the client starts elsewhere, use the host’s documented absolute path to reach the server directory. - Download
server.cfgbefore editing. Save a copy whose name includes the date and instance identity. - Open the downloaded file in a plain-text editor, not a word processor. Make the changes described in the syntax section below.
- Upload the file back to the same
cfgdirectory and confirm that the client asks whether to overwrite the existing file. - Check the remote file size and modification time, then restart the server from the panel or service manager.
Physgun’s documentation describes both panel editing and downloading the file over SFTP. The important detail is that SFTP must target the active instance’s cfg directory; uploading a file to a similarly named backup or staging folder has no effect.
Create server.cfg if it is missing
Some Rust installations do not create server.cfg during the first installation. If the cfg folder exists but the file does not, create it yourself with the exact name server.cfg, then save it in that folder.
Creating it in a web panel
- Open the active identity’s
cfgdirectory. - Choose New File or Create File.
- Enter
server.cfgexactly, using lowercase letters and no additional suffix. - Open the new file, add your settings, save, and restart the server.
Creating it on Windows
Notepad can silently append .txt. In the Save dialog, set Save as type to All Files, enter server.cfg as the filename, and then verify in File Explorer that the full name is not server.cfg.txt. Enabling File name extensions under File Explorer’s View options makes this check visible.
Creating it on Linux
From the instance’s cfg directory, create a plain file named server.cfg with your normal shell editor or a file manager. Confirm that the account running the Rust service can read it. A file owned by a different account or saved with restrictive permissions may appear present but be ignored at startup.

Format each setting correctly
The file is a list of console-style commands. Put one command on each line, and do not prefix the line with +. The leading plus used in some launch-command examples is not part of the normal server.cfg line format.
Use a plain-text editor and preserve the command’s spelling, value type, and quoting. For example, a text value that contains spaces needs quotation marks:

server.maxplayers 50These lines illustrate the layout: a command name, a space, and its value. Use the current Rust console-variable name and accepted value for the setting you need; an unknown or misspelled command will not produce the intended result.
Formatting checklist
- Use one complete command per line.
- Do not add a leading
+. - Keep quotation marks paired around values that contain spaces.
- Do not paste rich-text formatting, bullets, smart quotes, or hidden markup into the file.
- Save as UTF-8 plain text unless your host specifically documents another encoding.
- Keep a backup before changing several settings at once.
If you copy settings from a launch command, convert them to the file format rather than pasting the entire launch string. Remove shell syntax, executable paths, and any leading plus signs so that only one Rust command remains on each line.

Restart the server to apply saved changes
Edits saved to server.cfg do not change a server that is already running. Stop and start the instance after uploading or saving the file. Wait for the server to finish its normal startup before testing the setting.
Some host guides also describe entering commands through the in-game or RCON console for an immediate, in-memory change, followed by writecfg to write console changes back to disk. This behavior is not guaranteed across every host, wrapper, or Rust version. If you use it, verify that your server exposes the command, confirm which file it writes, and still perform a controlled restart to prove that the value persists.

Understand configuration precedence
When a value in server.cfg appears to be ignored, the problem may be precedence rather than file syntax. Host documentation is not uniform: one guide states that server.cfg overrides startup options, while another warns that values on the panel’s Settings page override manual file edits.
Because both arrangements exist, identify the layer that is supplying the value on your host:

- Check the panel’s startup or Settings page for the same option.
- Check the launch command or service definition if you manage the server yourself.
- Confirm that you edited the identity folder used by the active instance, not a second server with a similar name.
- Change the value in only one layer, restart, and observe the result.
- If the panel rewrites the setting at startup, use the panel control or follow that host’s documented precedence rules instead of repeatedly editing the file.
Do not assume that a value shown in the file is the final value loaded by Rust. The effective value is the result of the startup process, panel-generated arguments, and the file the process actually reads.

serverauto.cfg is not a substitute for server.cfg. Physgun warns that editing it can cause the file to reset to defaults. Keep your persistent manual settings in server.cfg, and leave serverauto.cfg under the server’s normal management process unless your host explicitly instructs otherwise.
If you accidentally changed serverauto.cfg, restore the backup or let the server regenerate it, then put the intended commands in server.cfg. Restart and verify the effective settings afterward.
Troubleshoot a server.cfg change that does not work
The file saves, but nothing changes
- No restart: stop and start the server; a browser refresh or reconnect is not enough.
- Wrong identity: compare the folder name with the instance selected in the panel or service definition.
- Panel precedence: remove or update a conflicting value on the Settings or startup page.
- Wrong filename: check for
server.cfg.txt, a capitalization difference, or an accidental second extension. - Wrong file: verify the remote path and modification timestamp after uploading through SFTP.
- Unsupported command: check the command spelling and value type; an unknown variable cannot configure the server.
The server fails to start after editing
- Stop the service and restore the last known-good backup.
- Start the server to confirm that the backup resolves the failure.
- Reapply changes one line or one small group at a time.
- Check for unmatched quotation marks, pasted plus signs, accidental rich-text characters, or a malformed value.
- Review the startup log supplied by the panel or service manager for the first reported configuration error.
Do not keep retrying a large untested file. Isolating one change makes it possible to identify whether the syntax, the value, or the precedence layer is responsible.
The file is present but is ignored
- Confirm that the Rust process has read permission for the file and execute or traverse permission for its parent directories.
- Check that the SFTP upload replaced the remote file rather than creating a second copy with a modified extension.
- Verify that the server was started with the identity whose
cfgdirectory you edited. - Look for a panel-generated configuration that is recreated during startup.
- Make a harmless, identifiable change, restart, and inspect the startup output or in-game result to confirm which file is being read.
A temporary console change disappears
A command entered through RCON or the in-game console may alter only the running process. If the value disappears after a restart, place the command in server.cfg and check whether the host’s panel or startup arguments override it. Use writecfg only when your host and server version support the expected behavior.
Panel editor versus SFTP
Both methods can modify the same file. Choose based on how much control and repeatability you need.

A safe repeatable workflow
- Identify the running Rust instance and its identity folder.
- Open
server/<identity>/cfgthrough the panel or SFTP. - Download or copy the existing
server.cfg, or create it if it is genuinely absent. - Record the current date, instance name, and reason for the change in your backup filename or change log.
- Edit as plain text, one command per line, with no leading plus signs.
- Save, upload if necessary, and verify the remote filename and timestamp.
- Check the panel’s Settings and startup arguments for conflicting values.
- Restart the server fully.
- Test the setting in the game or through the server console.
- If the result is wrong, restore the backup and repeat with a smaller change.
This workflow separates three questions that are often confused: whether the file was edited, whether Rust read it, and whether another configuration layer replaced its values.
