The reliable way to find MySQL’s active configuration file is to ask the exact program that starts MySQL. Run a client with --help, or run the server with mysqld --verbose --help, and read the section headed “Default options are read from the following files.” That list reflects your operating system, build, installation layout, and any explicitly supplied defaults-file arguments; a guessed path does not.
On Windows the file is usually named my.ini and may be under C:ProgramDataMySQLMySQL Server 26.7 when installed by the current MySQL Configurator. Linux and macOS commonly use my.cnf under /etc, /etc/mysql, or the server’s configured home directory. The actual server can also read an explicitly selected file, included files, and server-managed settings that you should not edit by hand.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat my.ini and my.cnf do
my.ini and my.cnf are MySQL option files: plain-text files containing startup options for the server and for client programs. The different suffixes are primarily conventional. Windows installations commonly use .ini; Unix-like installations commonly use .cnf. The filename alone does not prove that a particular file is active.
MySQL can read several files in sequence. A setting found later normally overrides an earlier setting, so two files can both contain port or max_connections and the value processed last wins. An explicit --defaults-file can select a particular option file, while --defaults-extra-file adds another file at a defined point in processing. Included files can add still more settings.

There are also files that look like configuration files but have a different purpose. .mylogin.cnf stores encrypted login-path data for clients, and mysqld-auto.cnf stores server-persisted variables in JSON. Neither is a normal hand-edited replacement for my.ini or my.cnf.
Find the file MySQL is actually reading
Use the program’s own search list
- Identify the executable used by the client or server instance you care about. Different installations on one computer can have different binaries and different option-file lists.
- For a client, run that executable with
--help. For the server, runmysqld --verbose --help. - Find the output section titled Default options are read from the following files. Treat this as authoritative for that executable.
- Check each listed location and inspect any existing file. Also search the text for
!includeand!includedir; the value you need may be in an included file rather than the file you first opened. - Check how the running service is launched for
--defaults-fileor--defaults-extra-file. An explicit argument can explain why a standard-looking file has no effect.
Run the help command for the same kind of process you are troubleshooting. A client’s search list and the server’s search list are not interchangeable: server groups and server-specific paths can differ from those used by mysql or another client.
Why a path from a web search can be wrong
Package maintainers choose different directories, an administrator can compile MySQL with a different SYSCONFDIR, and a service can start a different installation than the one on your interactive shell’s PATH. Containers, multiple major versions, and vendor packages add further variation. The help output belongs to the executable that will parse the options, so it accounts for those differences.

Where to look on Windows
MySQL’s documented Windows search sequence checks these locations and sources. At each location MySQL looks for my.ini and then my.cnf; later definitions can override earlier ones.
| Order | Location or source | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | %WINDIR%my.ini or %WINDIR%my.cnf |
%WINDIR% is commonly C:WINDOWS, but verify it with echo %WINDIR%. |
| 2 | C:my.ini or C:my.cnf |
These are files at the root of the system drive. |
| 3 | Copies under MySQL BASEDIR |
The installation directory can contain its own option file. |
| 4 | An explicitly supplied --defaults-extra-file |
The service or command line may add a file outside the usual directories. |
| 5 | %APPDATA%MySQL.mylogin.cnf |
This is encrypted login-path data, not an ordinary text configuration file. |
| 6 | DATADIRmysqld-auto.cnf |
The server writes persisted variables here; do not edit it manually. |
The current MySQL Configurator documentation places its default my.ini under C:ProgramDataMySQLMySQL Server 26.7. That is a default for that installation path, not a guarantee for an upgraded, custom, ZIP, or older installation.
Windows procedure
- Open Command Prompt using an account that can read the MySQL installation and data directories.
- Run the relevant client executable with
--help, or run the server executable withmysqld --verbose --help. - Copy the displayed search list and check the files in that order. Confirm the spelling and extension; Windows may have both
my.iniandmy.cnf. - Open the Windows service’s configuration or launch definition and look for
--defaults-fileand--defaults-extra-file. Use the path named there when it differs from the standard list. - Open the selected file in a plain-text editor. Save with an account that has write permission; a protected directory may require starting the editor with appropriate privileges.
MySQL’s Windows guidance states that an option file can be created or modified with any text editor, including Notepad. Avoid rich-text editors that add formatting or silently change characters.

Where to look on Linux, macOS, and other Unix-like systems
The documented Unix-like search order is:
| Order | Path or source | Scope or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | /etc/my.cnf |
System-wide option file. |
| 2 | /etc/mysql/my.cnf |
Common distribution-specific system path. |
| 3 | SYSCONFDIR/my.cnf |
The compile-time system-configuration directory for that build. |
| 4 | $MYSQL_HOME/my.cnf |
Used by the server; MYSQL_HOME can vary by installation. |
| 5 | An explicitly supplied --defaults-extra-file |
Adds an extra option file. |
| 6 | ~/.my.cnf |
Per-user text options. |
| 7 | ~/.mylogin.cnf |
Client login-path data, encrypted and not a normal text file. |
| 8 | DATADIR/mysqld-auto.cnf |
Server-managed JSON for persisted variables. |
Use the installed binary’s help output rather than assuming that every distribution uses the same path. A package may also place settings in an included directory. Read the active file for !include and !includedir directives, then inspect the referenced files.
Unix permissions that make a file appear to be ignored
On Unix-like systems MySQL ignores option files that are world-writable. If a file appears in the search list but its options have no effect, inspect its owner and mode, then remove the world-write permission and assign ownership appropriate for the account that launches MySQL. Check the file and any included file, not only the top-level path.
Understand precedence, explicit files, and includes
Later options normally win
MySQL processes option files in order. If max_connections=200 appears first and max_connections=500 appears later, the later value normally applies. This is why editing an early system file may seem ineffective when a user file, extra file, or included file sets the same option afterward. The server’s first user option is a documented security exception to the general “last value wins” rule.

--defaults-file versus --defaults-extra-file
--defaults-file explicitly tells a program which option file to use, so a service launched with it may not behave like a manually started binary that relies on default locations. --defaults-extra-file supplies an additional file. Always inspect the actual service or command line before concluding that a standard path is active.
Included files
!include /path/to/file.cnf reads one named file. !includedir /path/to/directory reads files from a directory. The order in an included directory is not guaranteed. On Unix-like systems, included files must end in .cnf; on Windows, MySQL checks .ini and .cnf. Keep related settings in clearly named files and verify the resulting order instead of relying on directory names alone.
Edit an option file safely
Use groups and one option per line
Option files are plain text. Start a section with a group header, then write one option per line without the two leading dashes used on a command line:

[mysqld]
port=3307
max_allowed_packet=128M
[client]
port=3307
Group names are case-insensitive. [mysqld] is read by the server, [mysql] by the MySQL command-line client, and [client] by MySQL client programs but not by mysqld. A setting in the wrong group can therefore be syntactically correct yet have no effect on the process you intended.
Comments, values, and Windows paths
- Use
#or;for comments. - Keep one option and value on each line; do not paste command-line
--option=valuesyntax into the file. - On Windows, prefer forward slashes in paths, for example
basedir=C:/Program Files/MySQL/MySQL Server 26.7. - If backslashes are required, use doubled backslashes where appropriate. A single backslash can be interpreted as an escape sequence.
- Preserve a backup of the original file before changing several settings at once. Record the old and new values so a failed startup can be reversed quickly.
Examples for common settings
| Goal | Group | Example | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change the server port | [mysqld] |
port=3307 |
Clients that connect to the server must use the matching port; a [client] value affects client defaults, not the server listener. |
| Set the maximum allowed packet | [mysqld] |
max_allowed_packet=128M |
Use a valid size suffix and keep the option in the server group for the server’s startup value. |
| Raise connection capacity | [mysqld] |
max_connections=500 |
Check available memory and the value actually loaded after the server starts. |
| Move the data directory | [mysqld] |
datadir=C:/mysql-data or datadir=/srv/mysql |
The directory must exist with suitable ownership and permissions; changing this path without moving or preparing the data can prevent startup. |
| Set a client default port | [client] |
port=3307 |
This supplies a default to client programs that read the group; it does not reconfigure the server. |
| Configure an InnoDB option | [mysqld] |
innodb_buffer_pool_size=1G |
Use the exact variable name supported by your MySQL version and place it in the server group. |
The examples show syntax, not universal values. Choose a port, connection limit, data path, or InnoDB size that fits the host, workload, and installed MySQL version.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Apply and verify a change
- Save the edited file as plain text and confirm that the filename did not gain an extra extension such as
.txt. - Re-run the relevant executable’s help output and inspect the search list if you are unsure which file was changed.
- Search all files in the processing chain for duplicate definitions and for
!includeor!includedirdirectives that may override your edit. - Restart the MySQL server through the operating system’s service manager when the option is read at startup. The exact restart command depends on the platform, package, and service name.
- After the server is running, verify the effective value from a connected client, for example:
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'port';
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'max_connections';
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'datadir';
If the server fails to start, restore the backup or remove the last change, then inspect the service log and the edited line for a misspelled variable, an invalid value, an inaccessible path, or a permission problem. A setting that can be changed dynamically in a running server may still need to be present in the option file for the next restart; a file edit alone does not change an already running process.
Why a setting is ignored: a diagnostic checklist
- Wrong executable: You ran help for one MySQL installation, but the service starts another binary. Obtain the help output from the installation that launches the server.
- Explicit defaults file: The service includes
--defaults-fileor--defaults-extra-file, so the file you edited is not the final source. - Later duplicate: Another option file or included file defines the same variable later in processing.
- Wrong group: A server option was placed under
[client], or a client option was placed under[mysqld]. - Invalid syntax: The line includes command-line dashes, an unrecognized option name, malformed size, or a Windows path with problematic backslashes.
- Unix permissions: The file is world-writable and MySQL ignores it.
- No restart: The running server has not reread a startup option after the file was saved.
- Different instance or data directory: A host may run more than one server, each with its own service definition, option files, and
DATADIR.
Work through the list in that order: establish the executable and launch arguments first, then precedence and grouping, then syntax and permissions, and finally restart and runtime verification.
Files you should not edit manually
.mylogin.cnf
.mylogin.cnf contains encrypted login-path information created by mysql_config_editor. It is not a readable replacement for ~/.my.cnf or a server option file. Manage login paths with the tool that created them rather than opening the binary file in an editor.
mysqld-auto.cnf
mysqld-auto.cnf is JSON written by the server after SET PERSIST or SET PERSIST_ONLY. MySQL documentation says management of this file should be left to the server. Do not hand-edit, reformat, or delete entries to change a persisted variable; use the server’s persistence statements and normal administrative procedures.

Quick Recap
A concise decision path
- Need the server’s startup settings? Run
mysqld --verbose --helpfor the server binary that the service uses. - Need a command-line client default? Run that client with
--helpand inspect its list; client groups and user files may differ from the server’s. - Found several files? Map them in processing order, including explicit extra files and included directories. The later applicable definition normally wins.
- Ready to edit? Use a plain-text editor, the correct group, one option per line, and platform-safe path syntax.
- Changed a startup value? Restart the correct service instance and verify the effective value from a connected client.
- Considering
.mylogin.cnformysqld-auto.cnf? Do not edit either manually; they are managed formats with different tools and rules.
