Start with the NASA Image and Video Library for searchable mission photos, video, and audio; use the Planetary Data System (PDS) for planetary-science products, Earthdata Search for Earth-observation collections, and NSSDCA for known spacecraft and legacy holdings. These archives overlap, so a missing result in one does not prove that NASA does not hold the item.
Choose the NASA archive that matches what you need
NASA does not maintain one universal download page for every spacecraft image and mission product. The correct route depends on whether you want a media asset for viewing or publication, a research-grade planetary product, an Earth-observation collection, or an archival record for a particular spacecraft.
| What you want | Best starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Searchable mission images, video, or audio | NASA Image and Video Library | Keyword search, asset pages, metadata, and whatever file renditions are offered for that item. The web application requires JavaScript. |
| Planetary spacecraft science products, including imaging datasets | NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) | Mission-, target-, and discipline-oriented catalogs, documentation, tools, and links to the actual archived products. PDS says its archived data and tools are online and free, with reasonable user assistance at no charge. |
| Earth-observation data | NASA Earthdata Search and its discipline DAACs | Collection search and filters for subject, time, geography, platform, instrument, and other attributes. An Earthdata Login is required to download Earth science data from DAACs. |
| A known spacecraft, legacy mission, or specialized image holding | NSSDCA Master Catalog and Image Resources | Archival records and links to specialist or active archives. Availability and delivery vary by collection. |
NASA’s STEM page described the Image and Video Library, in an update dated May 3, 2023, as combining more than 60 collections and over 140,000 NASA images, videos, and audio files. Treat that as a dated scale description, not as a verified current inventory count.
How do I find NASA spacecraft images?
1. Start with the narrowest identifier you know
Write down the mission, spacecraft, instrument, target, observation date, or geographic area before searching. “Mars image” is broad; a spacecraft name, camera, target, or date can reduce irrelevant results and helps you recognize the right record later. For a known spacecraft, keep alternate spellings and mission acronyms nearby because archive catalogs may use formal project names.

2. Decide whether you need media or science data
A downloadable picture for a presentation is not the same thing as an instrument product. A media asset may be a processed, shareable image, while a scientific product can include raw or calibrated measurements, labels, ancillary files, and processing context. Do not infer the product’s format, resolution, or processing level from a thumbnail. Confirm those details on the item or dataset record.
3. Search the NASA Image and Video Library
Use the library’s keyword search for general-purpose mission media. Open an individual result rather than downloading from a search grid. The detail page is where you can inspect the title, description, mission or instrument information, acquisition date when supplied, credit line, and available file renditions. Save the asset’s NASA identifier and source page with the downloaded file.
The library’s browser interface depends on JavaScript. If the page does not render, enable JavaScript, try a current browser, or use the library’s documented API workflow. NASA’s API supports search and metadata-location operations, but the available rendition list is specific to each asset; do not assume that every image has an original, full-resolution, JPEG, PNG, or raw-data download.
4. Check another archive when the first search fails
A result can be absent because it is stored in a different archive, has not yet been added, is not currently available online, or falls outside that archive’s remit. For planetary mission science products, move to PDS. For an Earth-observing platform or instrument, search Earthdata. For a spacecraft’s historical record or specialist image collection, check NSSDCA and any mission-specific archive it identifies.
Where can I download NASA mission data?
Planetary missions: use PDS
PDS is NASA’s principal long-term archive for planetary mission products and related flight and ground-based acquisitions. Its own description calls it “a long-term archive of digital data products returned from NASA’s planetary missions, and from other kinds of flight and ground-based data acquisitions, including laboratory experiments.” Search by mission, target, instrument discipline, or node, then follow the catalog record to the documented product.
PDS is designed for users who need reproducible science rather than only a convenient picture. Records may include product labels, calibration or processing documentation, software, and citation information. The current PDS homepage identifies a beta redesign, so follow the live portal and search pages instead of relying on instructions based on older screenshots.

Earth observation: use Earthdata Search
Earthdata Search covers NASA Earth-science collections distributed through discipline-oriented Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs). Refine results by time, place, subject, platform, instrument, and collection attributes. You can investigate collections and read informational pages before signing in, but an Earthdata Login is required to download Earth science data from DAACs.
For a few files, the web interface may be sufficient. For repeatable or large-scale retrieval, NASA’s access documentation recommends Earthaccess and also provides guidance for scripted methods such as cURL and Wget. Follow the current authentication instructions; an Earthdata account does not mean that every NASA portal uses the same login.
Known or legacy spacecraft: use NSSDCA
The NSSDCA Master Catalog is useful when you know the spacecraft, mission, or archival record you are trying to locate. Its image resources directory also points to specialized services and active archives. NSSDCA is a permanent archive that complements, rather than replaces, active mission archives, so a catalog entry may direct you elsewhere for current or higher-level data.
How do I download the right record?
- Open the item or collection record. Do not rely on a search-result thumbnail. Read the description, mission and instrument fields, observation or acquisition date, product level or processing description, and any stated restrictions.
- Capture provenance before downloading. Save the NASA identifier, source-page URL, mission or instrument name, date, posted credit, dataset citation, and DOI if one is listed. Put this information in a text file beside the downloaded asset.
- Choose the representation deliberately. A page preview, browse image, high-resolution rendition, raw product, and calibrated product can be different files. Select the representation that matches your purpose and verify its extension, dimensions, and documentation on the record.
- Authenticate only where required. Earth-science downloads from DAACs require Earthdata Login. PDS archive data and tools are described as free to access. The media library and many catalog pages can be browsed without assuming an account, but the exact requirement belongs to the service and record you are using.
- Download and retain the surrounding files. Scientific datasets commonly depend on labels, metadata, documentation, or ancillary files. If the record supplies them, keep them together rather than copying only a single data file.
- Verify the result. Check that the downloaded file opens, that its size and format match the record, and that its identifier and date agree with your notes. For a dataset, read the product documentation before interpreting pixel values or measurements.
How do I get the full-resolution or original image?
There is no single NASA-wide “original” button. The available files depend on the mission, archive, asset, and processing history. A media page may expose one or more downloadable renditions; a science archive may provide an instrument product rather than a publication-ready picture.
- Open the asset’s detail or download controls and inspect every listed rendition.
- Compare the displayed dimensions, file size, format, and description with your intended use.
- For a scientific image, read the product label and documentation to determine whether it is raw, calibrated, geometrically corrected, mosaicked, or otherwise processed.
- If no higher-resolution rendition is listed, search the corresponding mission or instrument archive instead of assuming that the preview is the only NASA copy.
NASA’s media API can return asset locations and metadata, but the documentation does not establish one universal rendition inventory. Confirm the actual files offered for the specific image.
Which NASA archive has images from a particular spacecraft?
Use the spacecraft name as the primary search term, then add its instrument or target. Begin in the Image and Video Library when you want public-facing media. Move to PDS when the spacecraft operated at a planetary body and you need mission science products. Use NSSDCA for a historical or archival record, especially when the spacecraft is no longer supported by an active project site. For Earth-observing spacecraft, Earthdata is usually the more appropriate science-data route.

| Question | Likely route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Do I want a picture, animation, or mission video? | Image and Video Library | It is organized for searchable media discovery and downloads. |
| Do I need planetary instrument measurements and documentation? | PDS | It preserves documented products and supporting tools for planetary science. |
| Is the observation of Earth and tied to a time or location? | Earthdata Search | Its collection and geographic, temporal, platform, and instrument filters match Earth-observation workflows. |
| Do I know the spacecraft but not the active archive? | NSSDCA Master Catalog | It can identify archival holdings and point to another service when delivery occurs elsewhere. |
Do I need an account to download NASA data?
Not always. Basic discovery and many media pages can be explored without treating every NASA site as account-gated. Earthdata is the important exception for this topic: Earthdata Login is required to download Earth science data from DAACs. Follow NASA’s current sign-in and download instructions, particularly when using scripts or a data-access client.
PDS describes its archive data and tools as online and free, with reasonable amounts of user support at no charge. That statement concerns access and support; it does not guarantee that every linked external service has identical sign-in rules.
Formats, metadata, and scientific interpretation
NASA archives do not impose one universal file format or resolution. A browseable media image may be delivered in a common image format, while a mission product can use a specialized scientific format accompanied by labels and documentation. The record, not the portal name, determines what you can download.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Metadata matters as much as pixels. Keep the mission, instrument, target, acquisition time, processing level, calibration notes, credit, and citation information. Without those fields, a renamed image can lose the context needed to reproduce a result or identify the correct observation.
Automating searches and downloads
Media-library automation
For repeated media searches, use the NASA Image and Video Library API described in its official documentation. A typical workflow is to submit a search, inspect the returned identifiers and metadata locations, then retrieve the file location associated with the selected asset. Build your script to handle multiple renditions and missing fields; do not hard-code a filename pattern that assumes every mission uses the same structure.
Earth-science automation
Earthdata provides current instructions for cURL, Wget, and other language workflows. Configure authentication according to those instructions and store credentials using the method recommended by NASA rather than embedding them in a script. Earthaccess is the documented recommendation for larger-scale Earth-science downloads.

Planetary-data automation
PDS catalogs and discipline nodes differ in organization. Start with the collection or product identifier, read its documentation, and automate only after you know which labels, ancillary files, and citation requirements belong with the product. A successful HTTP download is not proof that the file is scientifically interpretable.

NASA states that its content is generally not subject to U.S. copyright, but that is not a blanket license for every item encountered on a NASA website. NASA insignia, logotype, and identifiers are protected, and imagery must not be used to imply agency endorsement. Material credited to an individual, contractor, partner, or other organization may have separate terms.
NSSDCA’s Photo Gallery FAQ, dated April 7, 2016, says gallery items are generally public domain unless otherwise noted, asks users to credit NASA and NSSDCA, and requests project or person credit when the page supplies it. Because that FAQ is older, check the current item-level note and NASA’s current media policy before publication or commercial use.
For Earthdata collections, cite the dataset and access information clearly so another person can reproduce the download. Data hosted through the system but supplied by a non-NASA organization may carry that organization’s license. Keep the citation and credit beside the file, not only in a separate project document.
Reuse checklist
- Read the credit and usage note on the exact asset or collection page.
- Separate NASA-created material from third-party or partner material.
- Credit NASA, NSSDCA, a project, or an investigator when the record requests it.
- Do not place NASA marks in a way that suggests sponsorship or approval.
- Preserve the source identifier, citation, DOI, and access date.
- For Earthdata products, check whether a sponsoring organization’s license applies.
What to do when an image or dataset is missing
The search returns nothing
Try the formal mission name, acronym, spacecraft, instrument, target, and date separately. Remove overly specific terms, then narrow the result set with the archive’s filters. Search the other relevant NASA route before concluding that the material is unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
The page shows a thumbnail but no obvious download
Open the detail record, enable JavaScript if the application requires it, and look for rendition or asset-location controls. If the item is a science product, follow the dataset or product link rather than expecting a media-library download button.

The download requires a login
For Earth-observation data, create or use an Earthdata Login and follow NASA’s current authorization steps. Do not assume that credentials for one NASA service automatically authorize another.
The file is present but difficult to use
Read the product label, user guide, and calibration or processing documentation. Download associated metadata and ancillary files. A raw or calibrated product may require scientific software or mission-specific tools before it can be displayed meaningfully.
NSSDCA has a record but not the file
Use the record’s project, mission, or active-archive link. NSSDCA notes that some material may be elsewhere, not yet added, unavailable through that service, or outside its scope.

NASA Earth-science sites are undergoing migration through the end of 2026, so collection pages and discovery paths may move. Verify the live record and download instructions when you work. NSSDCA’s page directory was updated in September 2026, while its image-use FAQ dates to 2016; prefer current policy and item-level credits over old summaries.
A practical decision framework
When two archives appear plausible, compare them on six axes:
- Science domain: planetary, Earth observation, or another mission discipline.
- Purpose: browseable media or research-grade product.
- Granularity: one image or asset versus a collection of products.
- Access: anonymous browsing, account login, API, or bulk workflow.
- Provenance: supplied metadata, documentation, credits, and citation or DOI.
- Actual representation: the format, dimensions, processing level, and resolution offered by the selected record.
That comparison prevents the most common mistake: treating a convenient preview as a substitute for the documented mission dataset, or treating a technical archive as if it were a simple photo gallery.
Bottom line
Use the Image and Video Library for the fastest search of public-facing NASA mission media. Use PDS for planetary spacecraft science products, Earthdata Search for Earth-observation collections, and NSSDCA when a known spacecraft or legacy record is your starting point. Open the record, verify the rendition and metadata, authenticate only where the service requires it, and preserve credits and citation details with every download.
