You can find indie games on an iPhone or iPad by browsing the App Store’s Games and Today tabs, searching by title, genre, or developer, and checking the Indie Games chart when it appears in your storefront. Open each listing to verify that the developer, price, compatibility, file size, languages, age rating, privacy details, and reviews fit your needs. Tap Get for a free game or its displayed price for a paid game, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Apple’s newer Games app adds Home, Search, Arcade, and Library views, but its availability and catalog vary by region, device, operating-system version, and title.
What “indie game” means on Apple’s stores
Apple does not apply one universal, permanent “indie” designation to every game. In practice, people use the term for games made by independent developers or small studios rather than large publishers. The App Store may surface such games through editorial collections, category pages, charts, search results, or a storefront’s Indie Games chart. Those surfaces are discovery tools, not a guarantee that every listed title is independently developed or that every good indie game appears there.
Check the developer name on the individual listing before deciding whether a game fits your definition of indie. Apple’s charts are based on recent App Store downloads and can change, so a chart position is neither a quality score nor a complete catalog. Apple’s December 2024 risk-assessment report used the Indie Games chart as an example of a discovery category; the exact chart and titles shown to you depend on the storefront and the date you look.
Find indie games in the App Store on iPhone or iPad
1. Browse the Games tab
Open the App Store and select Games. This area can expose game categories, new releases, charts, and recommendations. Apple lists categories such as action, adventure, racing, and puzzles, so browsing a category is useful when you know the type of play you want but not a title or studio.

Open a category and scan the current listings rather than assuming that the first row is the best or most independent. Availability, ordering, and recommendations are storefront-specific and can change as new games are released and download activity changes.
2. Check Today for editorial collections
Select Today for Apple’s editorial stories, themed collections, and highlighted games. An editorial collection can be a faster way to discover a small studio than a generic search, particularly when the collection has a clear theme such as puzzle design, narrative games, or games from emerging creators.
Editorial placement is a recommendation from Apple, not proof of a developer’s business size, a review score, or ongoing availability. Open the game’s listing and inspect the developer and other details before downloading.

Use Search when you know a title, a genre, or a developer. Apple says App Store search uses listing metadata and engagement signals, while categories affect browse placement. That helps explain why a search for “pixel platformer,” “turn-based puzzle,” or a studio name may produce different results from browsing a category.
Search is not a promise that every relevant game will appear. Try several specific phrases, search the developer’s name directly, and open promising results to confirm that the listing matches the game you intended. A title can be available in one country and absent in another, and metadata can change over time.

4. Look for the Indie Games chart when it is available
Some storefronts show an Indie Games chart. It is a useful starting list when you want independent-style releases without having a particular name in mind. Because chart contents reflect recent downloads, a popular title can move quickly and a less-downloaded game may not appear at all. Treat the chart as one route into the store, then evaluate each listing on its own evidence.
5. Follow a developer from one listing to another
When you find a game you like, note the developer name and search that name. A small studio may have several games that are not grouped together in the same editorial collection or chart. This method also reduces the chance of downloading a similarly named game from a different developer.
Use Apple’s Games app when it is offered on your device
Apple’s support guide for downloading games with the Games app was published September 23, 2025. If the app is available on your device, update to the latest operating-system version before using it. Apple says the app can provide a central place for discovery and downloads, but the app, Apple Arcade, Game Center features, and individual games can vary by region and compatibility.
Home
Home can show new releases, top charts, and personalized suggestions. Use it for broad discovery, then open a game’s detail page to verify the developer and listing information. Personalized recommendations reflect your account and activity; they are not a complete list of indie games.
Search
Use Search to find a specific game or developer. The same practical checks apply as in App Store search: confirm the exact title, developer, screenshots, price treatment, and device support before selecting a result.

Arcade
Arcade is Apple’s subscription catalog. Apple describes games in that catalog as premium games without ads or in-app purchases. That description applies to games included in Arcade, not automatically to every game in the App Store. A game can be independently made and sold separately, included in Arcade, or unavailable in Arcade altogether.

That is a dated figure, not a current count; the catalog can change. The announcement quoted indie developer and Puzzmo cofounder Zach Gage describing the app’s integration of Puzzmo’s social features into players’ daily routines, and Doghowl Games cofounder Glib Platonov describing new challenges and a social layer. Those statements illustrate developer participation in Apple’s platform, not a guarantee that a particular indie title is in your catalog.
Library
Library lists games installed on the device and games you previously acquired, making it the place to redownload an eligible title. A previous acquisition does not override current regional, account, operating-system, or compatibility restrictions.
Inspect the listing before you download
Open the game’s product page instead of downloading directly from a chart row. The listing contains the evidence you need to distinguish a suitable game from a misleadingly similar result.

Do not infer that a game is free from the word “indie.” Apple’s documented distinction is functional: a free listing shows Get; a paid listing shows its price. A free download can still contain optional in-app purchases unless the listing or Arcade terms say otherwise.

Download a free or paid game
Free game
- Open the game’s listing in the App Store or Games app.
- Confirm the developer, compatibility, file size, price treatment, and other details.
- Tap Get.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode if Apple requests it.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish, then tap Open or launch the game from the Home Screen or Games app Library.
Paid game
- Open the listing and check the displayed price and purchase terms.
- Tap the price button.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode when prompted.
- Allow the purchase and installation to complete.
- Launch the game from the listing, Home Screen, or Library.
An Apple Account and an internet connection are required for App Store use. The exact authentication prompt and payment confirmation can differ according to your account settings. A game you previously acquired may show a redownload control instead of Get or a price.
Choose between a standalone purchase and Apple Arcade

If you specifically want no ads or no in-app purchases, check whether the game is in Apple Arcade and read the current listing. Do not extend Apple’s Arcade description to games outside that catalog.
Account, region, device, and connection requirements
- Apple Account: You need an Apple Account to use the App Store download flow.
- Internet: The store and download require an internet connection. A slow or interrupted connection can leave an installation waiting or incomplete.
- Country or region: Apple says availability varies by country or region. A game, chart, price, payment option, or Arcade catalog entry may differ from what another person sees.
- Operating system: The listing can require a particular iOS or iPadOS version. The Games app guide also advises updating to the latest operating-system version before use.
- Hardware: Compatibility can vary by iPhone or iPad model. A game may appear in search while remaining incompatible with your device.
- Storage: The listing’s file-size figure describes the download, but the device also needs enough free space to install and update it.
These conditions explain why a friend’s link or screenshot may not match your store. Always use the local listing as the authoritative check for your account and device.

The game does not appear in search
- Try the exact title, then the developer name, then a broader genre phrase.
- Search from the App Store rather than relying only on a chart or editorial collection.
- Check spelling and alternate punctuation in the title.
- Consider regional availability: the game may not be offered in your country or region.
Search rankings use listing metadata and engagement signals, so a missing result is not proof that the game has never existed or that it is not an indie production.

The listing is visible but the download button is unavailable
- Read the compatibility section for your model and operating-system version.
- Check whether the title is restricted in your country or region.
- Confirm that you are signed in with the intended Apple Account.
- Check available storage and your internet connection.
- Update the device if the Games app or the listing requires a newer operating system.
You expected a free download but see a price
Use the listing’s current button as the answer. Apple’s documented flow uses Get for free games and a displayed price for paid games. Prices and availability can change, and a game’s indie status says nothing about whether it is free.

You downloaded the wrong similarly named game
Return to the listing and compare the developer name, screenshots, icon, and description with the title you intended. Search the developer directly to locate the correct release. If you previously acquired the intended game, look in the Games app’s Library or the App Store account’s acquired-app area for a redownload option.
A game is in a chart but not suitable for your device
Charts are discovery surfaces, not compatibility filters. Open the product page and check the supported devices and operating-system requirement before attempting installation.
A practical workflow for finding the right indie game
- Define the play style. Start with a genre or mechanic such as puzzle, racing, adventure, or action.
- Use two discovery routes. Browse Games or Today, then search the genre and a developer name. This gives you both curated and metadata-based results.
- Use the Indie Games chart if shown. Treat it as a changing shortlist based on downloads, not a complete or ranked review of independent games.
- Shortlist several listings. Record the developer, price model, size, compatibility, languages, age rating, privacy details, and any Game Center, Family Sharing, multiplayer, or controller support you need.
- Resolve the price question. Choose between a free listing with Get, a one-time displayed price, or an Arcade title that requires a subscription.
- Confirm local availability. Check the listing while signed in on the device where you will play; another country’s catalog or a different device can produce a different result.
- Download only after the checks. Authenticate, wait for installation, and launch from the listing, Home Screen, or Library.
What Apple’s discovery system can and cannot tell you
Categories influence where a game appears while browsing, and search relies on the metadata supplied for the listing plus engagement signals. Editorial collections and recommendations add another route. Together, these mechanisms help you discover games without knowing a title, but none is a guarantee of completeness, quality, independence, or long-term availability.
The strongest evidence for a particular game is its current local listing: developer identity, screenshots and previews, reviews, price control, compatibility, file size, languages, age rating, privacy disclosures, and supported play features. Recheck those details when you are ready to install because storefront tabs, charts, prices, catalog membership, and device support can change.
