For a polished picture, start with the ESA/Hubble image archive and its Advanced Image Search. For calibrated observations, FITS files, or other research products, use NASA’s Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) MAST services: Hubble Search, the MAST Portal, or Astroquery. ESA’s eHST Science Archive provides a European mirror of public MAST Hubble data.
Choose the archive that matches what you need
“Hubble image” can mean two different things: a finished public-release picture designed for viewing, or the underlying observation data that researchers calibrate and analyze. Choosing the route first prevents you from downloading a preview when you really need a FITS file, or searching a science-data portal for a press image.

The ESA/Hubble archive is usually the quickest path to a presentation-ready image. MAST is the better starting point when the image is only one product among many or when your work requires calibrated data. eHST is not a separate Hubble mission; it is an ESA-hosted mirror of public MAST data.
Find a released image in the ESA/Hubble archive
1. Search by the object’s common name
Open ESA/Hubble’s Advanced Image Search and enter the target name used in astronomy or in the image caption you are trying to locate. Common names are the fastest route when the archive metadata uses the same designation. Try alternate catalog designations if the first search returns nothing.

2. Use coordinates when a name fails
Coordinates are often more reliable than names that vary between catalogs. Enter the target’s right ascension and declination in the form accepted by the search page, then examine the returned field around those coordinates. A coordinate search can reveal observations whose archive title does not use the object’s familiar name.
3. Narrow the results with archive filters
Use the available metadata fields to reduce a large result set. Depending on the archive page, filters can include:
- Instrument or camera
- Image title or subject
- Image or release identifier
- Other fields exposed by the Advanced Image Search form
ESA/Hubble’s tutorial commonly points to ACS, WFC3, and WFPC2 as general-purpose cameras. That is useful guidance for narrowing a search, not a rule that those cameras are always the correct choice for a target. If you know the observation used a different instrument, search for that instrument instead.

Select a result to view its preview and the associated metadata. Check that the target, instrument, title, and release information match what you intended to download. Search results can include spectroscopy rather than an image, and a target may have no Hubble observation at all. A result that is not an image is not a failed download; it is a different type of observation.
5. Select the format and size
The image page exposes the download formats and sizes available for that release. Choose the smallest file that meets your purpose for quick sharing, or the largest offered image when you need room for cropping and display. Save the archive’s caption and credit information with the file so you can identify it later.

6. Make quick adjustments in the browser when appropriate
ESA/Hubble describes browser-based adjustments and JPEG saving for quick work. This is convenient when you need a viewable image rather than the original science products. Browser adjustments should not be treated as a substitute for calibrated analysis; they are a presentation workflow.
Search NASA/STScI MAST for Hubble data
Use Hubble Search for standard HST archive queries
MAST’s Hubble Search is the direct starting point for standard Hubble Space Telescope searches. Enter a target name, coordinates, or another archive identifier, then inspect the matching observations. A single observation can have several product types, so open the product details instead of assuming that the first listed file is the one you need.

MAST results may include more than a finished image. Review the product category, processing level, detector or instrument, and file description. For a visual result, look for an image product or a preview. For analysis, identify the calibrated or other science product that matches your instrument and reduction needs. Downloading every file attached to an observation can create a large, confusing collection; select the products that answer your question.
Use the MAST Portal for HLA products
MAST’s cross-mission Portal has a specific route for Hubble Legacy Archive products. Set the Mission filter to “HLA,” run the search, and review the returned HLA datasets. This is the current MAST route for finding HLA products directly. The Hubble Search interface can make HLA-derived products available when you select products for particular HST datasets, but it does not search for HLA products in exactly the same way as the Portal.
Understand the 2026 HLA interface change
MAST says the older Hubble Legacy Archive search interface is being retired during calendar year 2026. The data products are not being removed: “The HLA data products will remain in MAST, only the HLA search interface itself will be retired.” If an old bookmark stops working, use the MAST Portal with Mission set to “HLA,” or use current Hubble Search and its product-selection workflow. Interface labels can change during a transition, so rely on the current MAST guidance rather than an old tutorial’s screenshots.

Use ESA’s eHST Science Archive as a mirror
eHST is an ESA-hosted European mirror of public Hubble data held in MAST. It is useful when you prefer an ESA-hosted interface or need an alternative route to the same public archive products. ESA’s 17 December 2025 announcement describes an updated image viewer and a download panel that lets you filter and retrieve selected files.

Typical eHST workflow
- Search for the target or observation in the eHST interface.
- Open the image viewer or observation details and verify the target and instrument.
- Use the download panel to filter the available files rather than downloading an entire result set blindly.
- Select the products you need and start the download.
- Keep the observation identifiers and archive credit with the downloaded files.
Because eHST mirrors public MAST data, a difference in interface does not necessarily mean a difference in scientific content. If a file is missing from one view, check the corresponding MAST record and its product categories.
Decide between a JPEG-style image and a FITS file
Choose a preview or JPEG for viewing and sharing
A JPEG or another offered image format is practical for a web page, presentation, classroom handout, or quick personal reference. It is already rendered for display and usually requires no astronomy-specific software. The archive record’s available sizes determine how far you can crop or enlarge it without visible quality loss.
Choose FITS for scientific analysis
FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) is a specialized scientific-data format. It preserves data and metadata needed for analysis and further processing rather than only storing a display-ready rendering. FITS is the appropriate choice when you need to measure brightness, combine exposures, inspect detector information, or produce your own calibrated visualization.
Open and process FITS products
ESA/Hubble cites FITS Liberator, Photoshop, and GIMP as examples of tools used for more advanced processing. The archive does not make those tools a requirement. Choose software that can read the specific FITS product and its metadata, and keep the original file unchanged so you can reproduce your processing later.

- Download the original FITS file and record its dataset or observation identifier.
- Inspect the header and note the instrument, filter, exposure information, and processing level.
- Work on a copy when stretching, combining, or converting the data.
- Export a JPEG or PNG only after the scientific or visual adjustments are complete.
- Keep the FITS file and your processing notes together if the result may be used in research or publication.
Search failures, missing previews, and restricted observations
No result for a familiar object
A no-match result does not prove that Hubble never observed the target. Try the object’s coordinates, an alternate catalog designation, or a broader search. Some targets genuinely have no Hubble observation, so confirm the result with more than one identifier before concluding that the data do not exist.
The result is spectroscopy rather than an image
Hubble archives contain spectroscopic observations as well as imaging. Read the observation type and product description. A spectrum may be exactly what the observation contains, but it will not produce a conventional sky picture for download.
There is an observation but no preview
Some Hubble observations remain proprietary for a period before public release. A restricted observation may have no public preview or downloadable public product. Search for another released observation of the target, or check the archive again after the release period. Do not infer from the absence of a preview that the telescope did not observe the object.
The file list is overwhelming
Start with the archive’s product categories and the purpose of your download. For a public image, use the release page’s offered image sizes. For analysis, identify the calibrated product and any directly associated files required by your software. Downloading only the relevant products reduces storage use and makes later processing easier to audit.

MAST lists Astroquery as a Python-oriented way to access archive functions. This route is useful when you need repeatable searches, coordinate-based retrieval, or a batch of observations rather than a one-time browser download.

Plan the query before writing code
- Choose a target name, coordinate region, instrument, or dataset identifier as the search key.
- Decide whether you need public release images, HLA products, or calibrated HST data.
- Define the product types and file extensions you will retain.
- Store the returned observation and product identifiers with each downloaded file.
Validate programmatic results
Automated queries can return several observations, instruments, and product levels. Inspect a sample manually in MAST before running a large retrieval. Confirm that the coordinate system, instrument filter, public-availability status, and product category match your intended data. Treat the archive metadata as the authority for what each file contains.
Credits, rights, and responsible reuse
Public availability is not a universal reuse license. The official archive pages do not establish one license that covers every Hubble image, generated product, or derivative file. Before republication or commercial use, inspect the specific image or dataset page for its credit and rights information.
- Copy the credit wording shown on the individual archive record.
- Keep the original title, release identifier, and relevant instrument information in your notes.
- Distinguish an archive-rendered image from a colorized or otherwise processed derivative.
- Check any additional restrictions attached to the record before selling, licensing, or advertising with the image.
For a personal download, retaining the credit is still good practice. For publication, follow the record’s exact attribution instructions rather than assuming that “from NASA” alone is sufficient.

A useful archive example: the Hubble Legacy Field
The Hubble Legacy Field illustrates why archive context matters. In a 2019 ESA/Hubble release, the field was described as containing roughly 265,000 galaxies assembled from 16 years of Hubble observations. Those figures describe that historical composite, not the number of images currently available in all Hubble archives.
Garth Illingworth of the University of California, Santa Cruz, who led the team that assembled the field, described the result this way: “Now that we have gone wider than in previous surveys, we are harvesting many more distant galaxies in the largest such dataset ever produced.” When you locate a similar composite, read its release record to learn which observations, instruments, filters, and processing choices contributed to it; the finished picture may represent many underlying datasets.
Recommended decision checklist
- Define the output: a released picture, a preview, a JPEG-style file, a FITS image, or another science product.
- For a released picture, search ESA/Hubble by target name or coordinates and refine with instrument, title, subject, or release fields.
- For research data, search MAST Hubble Search and inspect product categories before selecting files.
- For HLA products, use the MAST Portal with Mission set to “HLA,” especially as the legacy HLA interface retires during 2026.
- Use eHST when an ESA-hosted mirror and its updated viewer or filtered download panel fit your workflow.
- Use Astroquery when the search or download must be repeatable in Python.
- Check public-release status if an expected preview or file is missing.
- Preserve the observation identifier, original file, and archive credit with every download.
- Inspect the individual record’s rights information before republication or commercial use.
What to do when you need both a public image and the underlying data
Use ESA/Hubble to locate the released image and understand its subject, caption, and credit, then use MAST or eHST to locate the corresponding observation and science products. The two records may not have identical names: a public image can combine exposures from multiple datasets, while a single MAST observation may represent only one filter or visit. Match records by target, observation identifiers, instrument, and release metadata instead of assuming that a filename alone identifies the full composite.
