On PS5, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Game Catalog, choose an eligible title, then select Download. On PS4, open Function screen > PlayStation Plus > Game Catalog, select the game and choose Download. These steps apply to the rotating Game Catalog included with an active PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium membership; the title must also be available for your console and region.
PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium do not give you one permanent list of owned games. They provide access to catalogs that change over time. A game can disappear when Sony removes it, and the catalog shown in one country may differ from another. Always confirm the current listing on Sony’s catalog page or the PlayStation Store before starting a download.
Sony’s official instructions are summarized on its Game Catalog access and download page. The menu names differ between PS5 and PS4, so identify your console before following the steps below.
What you need before downloading
- An active PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium membership. Extra includes the Game Catalog; Premium includes the Game Catalog and the Classics Catalog. Essential does not include Game Catalog access. See Sony’s plan and catalog information.
- A PlayStation Network account signed in to the account that holds the membership.
- A compatible console. A PS5 game can only be downloaded to a PS5; it cannot be installed on a PS4. The title page identifies the supported platform.
- A title that is still in the catalog for your country. Sony can assign an end date to a Game Catalog or Classics Catalog game and remove it from the service.
- Enough free storage for the installation and any updates. The required space is shown on the title’s store page or download screen.
Do not assume that seeing a game in a search result means your plan includes it. Open the listing while signed in and check the membership badge, supported console, and available action. Depending on the title, the action can be Download, a streaming option for Premium, or a purchase button.

Extra, Premium and Monthly Games: the differences
Three PlayStation Plus benefits are easy to confuse. The Game Catalog is the rotating library used by Extra and Premium members. Premium also adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and streaming for many catalog games. Monthly Games are a separate benefit: a member adds the offered games to their library during the month and can play them while the membership remains active. Adding a Monthly Game is not the same as downloading a rotating Game Catalog title.

Sony explains the distinction between catalog games and Monthly Games on its PlayStation Plus game-access support page. The live catalog, rather than an old article or screenshot, is the authority for whether a particular title is included today.
How to find and download a Game Catalog game on PS5
Use this route when you want to install a catalog game directly on a PS5.
- Sign in to the PS5 with the account that has the active Extra or Premium membership.
- From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Select Game Catalog. Browse categories or use the catalog’s search controls to locate a title.
- Open the game page and verify that the listing shows the PS5 version or a PS5-compatible edition and that your membership is eligible.
- Select Download. If more than one edition or add-on is listed, choose the base game or the edition you actually intend to install.
- Check the download in the PS5 control center if you need to pause, resume or monitor progress. When installation finishes, start the game from the Games home screen or your Game Library.
If the page offers only a PS4 version, the PS5 can usually run that PS4 version, but the listing—not the catalog label alone—determines which edition is being installed. If the title is PS5-only, it will not be downloadable to a PS4.
How to find and download a Game Catalog game on PS4
PS4 uses a different menu path:
- Sign in to the PS4 with the account holding the active Extra or Premium membership.
- From the function screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Scroll to Game Catalog.
- Choose the game you want to inspect.
- Confirm that the listing supports PS4 and that the title is included with your membership in your region.
- Select Download and wait for the installation to complete. You can monitor the transfer in Notifications or the Downloads area, then launch the game from the content area.
A catalog card may show both PS4 and PS5 versions. Select the PS4 download when using a PS4. A PS5-only card cannot be downloaded to that console.
Find a downloaded game in your Game Library
If you left the catalog screen or the icon is no longer on the home screen, open your console’s Game Library and look under the installed or purchased collections. Sony states, “Your PlayStation Plus games can also be found in your Game Library.” The library is also useful for starting an installation that was queued but not completed, provided the title is still available to your membership.

Do not treat a library entry as proof of permanent ownership. A Game Catalog entitlement remains dependent on the active subscription and the title’s continued presence in the service. A purchase entitlement shown in the store is a different type of license.

Premium members may see both installation and streaming choices, but not every catalog game supports both. Extra members use download access; streaming is a Premium benefit. The title page and the device you are using determine which button appears.

The bandwidth figures above come from Sony’s US support documentation and should be checked against the current requirements for your country. A speed test that meets the minimum does not guarantee a smooth session: Wi-Fi quality, congestion, latency and other household traffic can affect the result.
How to check whether a title is really included
Read the membership label
On the game page, look for an indication that the title is included with PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium. If the page shows a purchase price without a catalog download option, the game may not be included in your plan or may have left the catalog.
Check the console version
Look for PS4, PS5 or both in the product details. A PS5 game requires a PS5 for download. A PS4 owner should select a PS4 edition when both versions are offered; the presence of a PS5 badge does not make the PS5 build installable on PS4.

Catalog availability is regional and can change. Sony’s US pages are not a worldwide availability list. Open the PlayStation Plus catalog for your local account and read any removal or end-date notice. Sony posts catalog changes and new additions on its What’s New on PlayStation Plus page, but the individual store listing is the final check for your account.

Before you press Download
A few checks prevent most failed or unwanted installations. First, confirm that the account shown in the console menu is the one with Extra or Premium. A console can display the catalog to one account while another account remains on Essential or has no active membership. Second, open the full product page rather than downloading from a small promotional tile. The full page reveals whether the game is a PS4 build, a PS5 build, both, a trial, a stream-only offering or a purchase.
Third, compare the edition and any add-ons. A listing can expose more than one version, so select the base game you intend to play and avoid treating an expansion as the complete game. Fourth, check free storage before starting. The store or download screen gives the relevant space figure; leave room for updates instead of filling the drive to its limit. Finally, note any displayed removal date. A long download or large game may not be worth starting if the title is scheduled to leave before you can play it.
These checks are especially useful when a title appears in search results but the action button is unexpected. A purchase price, a streaming button or a trial label is not evidence that a normal catalog download is available to your account.

The Game Catalog tile is not visible
- Confirm that the signed-in account has Extra or Premium rather than Essential.
- Check that the console is online and that PlayStation Network services are available.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the console menu instead of relying on an old home-screen shortcut; menu placement can change after system updates.
- Sign out and back in, then re-open the catalog. If another account owns the membership, switch to that account before checking eligibility.
The game appears, but there is no Download button
- Read the product page for a purchase-only listing, a streaming-only option or a trial. Premium does not make every title downloadable.
- Verify the console version. A PS5-only game cannot be downloaded to PS4.
- Check whether the title has an announced end date or has already left your regional catalog.
- Open the store page while signed in. If the catalog entitlement is not shown there, the game is not currently included for that account.
The download stops or will not start
- Check available storage and remove or move content if the console cannot reserve the required space.
- Inspect Downloads or Notifications for a paused transfer and resume it.
- Test the console’s network connection and retry after other large downloads finish.
- If the store page has changed from an included listing to a purchase listing, the catalog entitlement may have ended; do not buy the game solely because an old library tile remains.
The game was installed but is now locked
A catalog installation is not a permanent purchase. If the membership tier is no longer active or Sony has removed the title, the installed files may remain while the license check prevents launching. Check the current catalog listing and your subscription status before deleting and reinstalling anything.
What happens when Sony removes a catalog game?
Sony can publish an end date for a Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title. After removal, a download that has not completed may no longer be available, and an installed copy can lose its catalog license. The exact timing and treatment are title- and region-dependent, so use the date shown in your account’s listing rather than a third-party game list.
To avoid an interruption, finish a game before its displayed removal date. Saving progress does not convert the catalog entitlement into ownership. If you later purchase the game, the purchase license is separate from the former subscription access.

Using Monthly Games instead of the Game Catalog
If a game is presented as a Monthly Game, add it to your library during the monthly offer period before downloading. Monthly Games are not simply another catalog filter: Sony describes them as a separate membership benefit. A title can therefore be available as a Monthly Game even when it is not in the rotating Game Catalog, and a catalog title can rotate out without affecting a different Monthly Game entitlement.

When you open PlayStation Plus, check the heading on the card—Monthly Games, Game Catalog or Classics Catalog—before selecting an action. This prevents accidentally searching the wrong benefit or assuming that a downloaded monthly title will remain available after the membership ends.

Eligibility follows the account and its local store, not a generic list found online. Two players can search for the same title and see different buttons because their regions, consoles or membership tiers differ. Use the account that will actually play the game, then verify the listing in that account’s store. A US catalog page can explain the menu route, but it cannot establish that a title is offered in every country.
Device support matters just as much. Extra and Premium both provide Game Catalog access, yet a PS5-only title still needs a PS5 for download. A card showing both platforms requires you to choose the edition matching the console. Premium streaming can remove the need for local installation when the title and device offer streaming, but it does not turn every catalog entry into a streamable game.
Practical checklist for each download
- Identify the console: PS5 or PS4.
- Confirm the account’s active Extra or Premium membership.
- Open the correct Game Catalog path for that console.
- Read the title page for region, edition and PS4/PS5 compatibility.
- Check whether the listing shows Download, streaming or purchase.
- Note any catalog end date before committing to a long game.
- Check free storage and start the download.
- Verify progress in the console’s download area.
- Launch from Games home or Game Library after installation.

Can PlayStation Plus Essential members download Game Catalog games?
