In Gmail on a computer, search larger:10M to find messages over 10 MB. Add has:attachment, filename:, sender, or age filters to reduce the results, review the messages, then click Delete. To reclaim Google Account storage, also empty unneeded items in Trash and Spam; Google says storage totals can take 48–72 hours to update after a large cleanup.
Use the right Gmail search operator
Gmail’s search box can filter by the total message size, whether a message has an attachment, the attachment’s filename, and the message’s age. The most useful operators are documented in Google’s Gmail search reference.
| Goal | Search query | What it matches |
|---|---|---|
| Find messages larger than 10 MB | larger:10M |
Messages whose size exceeds 10 MB. |
| Find large messages that have attachments | has:attachment larger:10M |
Attachment-bearing messages over 10 MB. Google uses this as a storage-cleanup example. |
| Use an exact byte threshold | size:1000000 |
Messages matched using the supplied byte threshold. Gmail’s operator documentation uses 1,000,000 as its example. |
| Find large PDF attachments | filename:.pdf larger:5M |
Messages with a PDF filename and a message size over 5 MB. |
| Find old messages with attachments | older_than:2y has:attachment |
Messages older than two years that contain attachments. |
| Search every Gmail area | in:anywhere larger:10M |
Large messages in regular mail, Spam, and Trash as well as the other searchable areas. |
The size operators describe the message, not just the visible filename. A message with several smaller attachments can therefore meet a size filter even when no individual file appears especially large. The total can also include the message body and other encoded message data, so a file’s displayed size is not always the same as the Gmail message size.

Start with larger:10M because it is Google’s documented example for large attachment mail. If the result set is still too broad, try larger:25M to inspect the biggest candidates first. If you need a more precise byte boundary, use size: with the byte value you want. The 10 MB and 5 MB values in Google’s examples are starting points, not mandatory limits; choose a threshold that fits your mailbox and retention rules.

Use larger: or size: when your main question is “which messages consume the most space?” Add has:attachment when you only want mail carrying files. Add filename: when the file type matters, and add older_than: or calendar dates when age is part of your cleanup policy. These filters answer different questions and can be combined in one search.
Find large emails step by step
1. Open Gmail and run a broad search
- Open Gmail in a desktop browser and click the search box at the top.
- Enter
larger:10M, then press Enter. - Scan the results for messages you recognize before selecting anything.
This first pass shows where the biggest messages are. It is safer than deleting every message with an attachment because it leaves ordinary, potentially important correspondence out of scope. Notice recurring senders, file extensions, and date ranges; those patterns help you write a narrower second query instead of making a risky mailbox-wide selection.
2. Restrict the search to attachment mail
To focus on messages that are likely consuming space through files, replace the query with has:attachment larger:10M. Google’s storage-cleanup guidance gives that combination as the standard example for large attachment mail: Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos.
This does not mean every result has one giant file. Several attachments in one conversation can push the total over the threshold. Open representative results so you understand what is actually taking space before deciding what can go.
3. Add an age, sender, or file-type condition
Large mail is not automatically disposable. Add a condition that reflects your retention policy:
has:attachment larger:10M older_than:2ylimits results to older attachment messages. Theolder_than:example is documented by Google.filename:.pdf larger:5Mtargets PDF-heavy mail over 5 MB.- Add a sender, such as
from:news@example.com, when one newsletter or service generates most of the results. - Add a date range such as
after:2024/01/01 before:2024/07/01when you know the period you want to review. Gmail’s search reference lists date and sender criteria alongside the size operators.
Operators can be combined in one search. For example, from:client@example.com has:attachment larger:20M older_than:1y finds older, very large messages from one sender without touching the rest of the mailbox. Change each value to match your own policy rather than treating the example as a rule to delete everything it returns.

4. Search Trash and Spam when storage is the objective
A normal search emphasizes current mail. To include every Gmail area, prepend in:anywhere, for example in:anywhere larger:10M. Google documents this operator in its operator reference and in Search in Gmail.
Use this broad scope deliberately. Trash and Spam may contain messages you still need to recover, so inspect the folder and the search results before taking bulk action. A message already in Trash is not necessarily permanently gone, and a message in Spam can still be useful evidence or a false positive.
Review results before deleting
Search results are a candidate list, not a deletion recommendation. Before selecting a page of messages, check:
- Whether the conversation contains an invoice, contract, receipt, travel record, legal notice, or other information you may need.
- Whether the attachment is the only copy of a document. Download or move a needed file to a managed Drive folder before deleting its email.
- Whether a conversation includes several messages. Gmail may show a thread even though only one message carries the large attachment.
- Whether a retention, tax, employment, school, or legal policy requires the mail to be kept.
- Whether the sender is a system, customer, or colleague whose messages should be preserved even if they are old.
- Whether the message is part of an ongoing conversation whose earlier context matters.
Open a message when the subject or sender is ambiguous. If you need a record but not the attachment, save the attachment first and then decide whether your organization’s policy permits deleting the original email. Keep uncertain messages out of a bulk selection; a smaller, deliberate cleanup is safer than trying to recover a large accidental deletion.
Delete the messages you have approved
- In the search results, select the checkboxes beside the messages you have reviewed.
- Click the Delete (trash-can) button in the toolbar.
- If Gmail displays a notice that more conversations match the search than are visible on the current page, use the link to select all matching conversations only after confirming that the query is narrow enough.
- For a small result set, open the conversation and use the same trash-can button to remove it individually.
Deleting moves messages to Trash; it does not immediately erase them. Google’s computer instructions explain the process at Delete messages in Gmail. If you delete a message because of its attachment, the attachment remains part of that deleted Gmail message until the message is permanently removed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEmpty Trash and Spam to reclaim storage
Google Account storage is shared by Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Gmail messages and attachments in both Spam and Trash continue to count toward that shared allowance. If your goal is to free space, open each folder, confirm that nothing there is needed, and choose the option to empty it. Google’s storage instructions are at Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos.

Emptying a folder is a stronger action than ordinary deletion. Do it only after reviewing the folder, especially if you have just moved messages there as part of a large cleanup. If you only want a reversible first pass, leave the messages in Trash while you verify that the important files were saved.
Understand Gmail’s deletion and recovery window
Google says a deleted message can be restored from Trash or permanently deleted manually during the next 30 days. After 30 days, Gmail permanently deletes it and it cannot be recovered through Trash. Emptying Trash early also makes the deletion permanent. The full recovery instructions are in Google’s deletion help.
Restore a message still in Trash
- Open Trash in Gmail’s left navigation. If it is hidden, click More.
- Select the message or conversation.
- Click Move to, then choose Inbox or another label.
If you emptied Trash or the message has passed the retention period, Gmail’s normal Trash recovery route is no longer available. That is why a staged process—search, review, delete, wait, then empty—is preferable when the messages may have business or personal value.

What to do when storage does not change
Allow time for the total to recalculate
After deleting a large number of files or messages, Google says the storage figure can take 48–72 hours to update accurately. Do not assume the cleanup failed solely because the number is unchanged immediately. Check again after that period using Google’s storage view and the guidance at Manage your storage.
Check all three services
Because Google Account storage is shared, deleting Gmail may not make a visible difference if Drive or Photos is using most of the allowance. Review large files, videos, and backups in those services as well as Gmail. Google explains the allocation model in How your Google storage works.
Look for remaining mail in Trash and Spam
If you removed messages from the inbox but did not empty the two holding folders, their messages and attachments still count. Search with in:anywhere larger:10M to see whether large items remain in any Gmail area, then review and clear only what you can permanently discard.

Check for a different account or a second copy
Make sure the browser is displaying the Google Account whose storage you are checking. Also consider whether the same attachment exists in Drive or Photos; deleting the email does not remove an independently stored copy in another service. A successful Gmail cleanup cannot reduce space occupied by a separate copy elsewhere.

If Gmail cannot send or receive mail
Google says an account that reaches its storage limit can be unable to send or receive Gmail messages. Start with the targeted searches above, empty unneeded Trash and Spam, and allow the storage total to recalculate. If the account remains full, Google identifies clearing space elsewhere or purchasing additional storage as the available next steps. The storage model and limit behavior are described in How your Google storage works.
Buying more storage is a fallback, not a requirement for finding or deleting large mail. First identify whether Gmail, Drive, or Photos is responsible and remove data you are genuinely allowed to discard. If you still need all of the stored material, additional Google One storage may be the practical option.
Practical search recipes
| Use case | Query | Why use it |
|---|---|---|
| Start with the biggest ordinary messages | larger:25M |
Raises the threshold so you can review the largest candidates first. |
| Old attachments likely to be obsolete | has:attachment larger:10M older_than:2y |
Combines size and age while leaving recent mail alone. |
| PDF archive cleanup | filename:.pdf larger:5M |
Targets the file type and threshold shown in Google’s cleanup example. |
| One sender’s oversized mail | from:sender@example.com larger:10M |
Limits review to a known source. |
| Messages in every Gmail area | in:anywhere has:attachment larger:10M |
Includes current mail, Spam, and Trash in the candidate set. |
| Byte-based filtering | size:1000000 |
Uses an explicit byte value instead of a unit such as MB. |
Change the sender, age, extension, and threshold to fit your retention rules. Run the query, inspect the result count and sample messages, and only then select conversations for deletion. If a query returns too many unrelated results, add one narrowing condition rather than raising the threshold blindly.

- Deleting every message with an attachment: use a size operator first, then add age or sender criteria.
- Assuming the largest individual file is always shown: Gmail’s size filter applies to the message, so several attachments and message content can contribute to the total.
- Using a broad query and selecting all conversations: refine the query and review representative results before using Gmail’s “select all matching” option.
- Expecting immediate storage relief: check again after Google’s documented 48–72-hour update window.
- Forgetting Spam and Trash: those folders count toward shared storage until their contents are permanently removed.
- Emptying Trash before checking: permanent deletion removes Gmail’s normal 30-day recovery path.
- Confusing a Gmail message with a Drive file: deleting an email does not delete a separately stored copy in Drive or Photos.
- Cleaning the wrong account: verify the account name before comparing Gmail with the storage total.
A safe repeatable cleanup routine
- Record why you are cleaning up and any retention rules that apply.
- Run
larger:10Mand note which senders, file types, and dates dominate the results. - Build a narrower query, such as
has:attachment larger:10M older_than:2yorfilename:.pdf larger:5M. - Review conversations and save any required attachments before selecting messages.
- Delete the approved set and leave uncertain messages untouched.
- Review Trash and Spam separately before emptying either folder.
- Check Drive and Photos if the shared storage total remains high.
- Allow up to 48–72 hours for Google’s storage figure to settle, then reassess.
This approach separates discovery, judgment, deletion, and permanent cleanup, reducing the chance that a useful document disappears while still addressing the messages that consume the most space.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find large emails in Gmail?
Search for larger:10M. To focus on messages with files, use has:attachment larger:10M. Add sender, filename, date, or age operators to narrow the results before selecting anything.

Can Gmail find emails with large PDF attachments?
Yes. Google’s example is filename:.pdf larger:5M. The size filter applies to the Gmail message, so the message can exceed 5 MB because of one PDF or several pieces of content.
Does deleting an email immediately free Google storage?
No. Deleted mail moves to Trash, and messages in Trash and Spam still count toward shared Google Account storage. Permanently remove only items you no longer need, then allow 48–72 hours for the total to update.
Can I recover a large email after deleting it?
A deleted message can be restored from Trash during the 30-day retention period. Emptying Trash early makes deletion permanent, and messages older than 30 days cannot be recovered through Gmail’s normal Trash route.
Why didn’t my Gmail storage update after deleting emails?
Google says a large cleanup can take 48–72 hours to appear accurately. Also check whether the remaining storage is in Drive or Photos, and whether the deleted messages are still in Trash or Spam.
How do I search Gmail’s Trash and Spam for large messages?
Use in:anywhere larger:10M, or combine it with has:attachment. Review the results carefully because this search includes messages that may still be recoverable.
Will deleting a Gmail message remove the same file from Drive?
No. Gmail, Drive, and Photos share an account allowance, but an independent copy stored in Drive or Photos remains there when you delete the email.
Do I have to buy more storage to delete large Gmail messages?
No. Searching and deleting mail works without an upgrade. Google identifies additional storage as a fallback when clearing Gmail, Drive, and Photos does not bring the account below its limit.
The Bottom Line
Start with larger:10M, then narrow by attachment, filename, sender, or age. Review every candidate, delete only approved messages, and empty Trash and Spam only when permanent deletion is acceptable. Because storage is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos, and totals can take 48–72 hours to refresh, verify the account and all three services before concluding that cleanup failed.
