“Free game” can mean four different things: a free-to-play download, a game temporarily priced at zero, a title included with an active subscription, or a time-limited trial. The claiming steps and what you keep afterward depend on which type you are using.
Use each platform’s current store or support page as the final authority for the title, region, platform, deadline and eligibility. The procedures below show how the documented offers work without treating a subscription benefit or trial as permanent ownership.
What “free” means on a game store
Before selecting a download button, identify the entitlement you are receiving. A zero-price transaction, a subscription license and a free-to-play download behave differently if you cancel a membership, miss a deadline or change regions.

Check six items before claiming anything: the offer type, required account or membership, end date and time, supported platform, regional eligibility, and whether you can download later. A “claim” button does not by itself prove permanent ownership.

How to find and install free-to-play games on Steam
Steam’s documented free-to-play category is for games you can download without a subscription or credit card. That does not mean every title is free of optional spending: an individual game may sell cosmetic items, extra content or other purchases through the Steam Wallet.
Step 1: Open Steam’s free-to-play listing
- Open the Steam Store and go to its Free to Play category.
- Browse or search the titles shown there. Treat that category as a discovery list, not as a promise that every item has identical monetization or system requirements.
Step 2: Inspect the game’s store page
- Select a title to open its individual page.
- Read the page’s platform and system-requirement information before installing. Confirm that your operating system and hardware meet the listed requirements.
- Look for disclosures about in-game purchases or other paid content. A free-to-play base download can still offer optional items, expansions or services.
Step 3: Start the download
- Choose the page’s available play or install option.
- Sign in to Steam if prompted and select an installation location.
- Allow the client to finish downloading before launching the game.
Steam’s support guidance does not establish a regular, recurring schedule of temporary full-game giveaways. Therefore, do not assume that a title listed as free-to-play is a weekly claim promotion, or that every zero-price event follows the same rules. The individual store page is the place to verify current purchases and requirements.
If Steam asks for payment
A free-to-play listing should not require a subscription or credit card to download according to Steam’s support guidance. If a payment screen appears, check that you selected the base game rather than an add-on, bundle or paid edition. You can also review the title’s purchase disclosures before proceeding. Optional Steam Wallet spending is separate from obtaining the free-to-play download.

How do I claim free games on Epic?
The Epic Games Store operates a documented weekly giveaway. A new offer is scheduled for Thursday at 8 AM Pacific Time, and the displayed title normally has seven days in which to be claimed. The live Free Games page is the authority for the current game, deadline, supported platform, region and any special terms.

Step 1: Check the live offer and deadline
- Open the Epic Games Store’s Free Games page.
- Read the current title, platform or mobile availability, region information and countdown or stated end date.
- Record the deadline in your own time zone. The weekly start is expressed by Epic as “Thursday at 8 AM PT”; the offer rotates after seven days.
Step 2: Prepare the required account
- Sign in to an Epic account, or create one through the store’s current account flow.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Epic’s support instructions list an Epic account with two-factor authentication as a requirement for claiming the weekly game.
- Confirm that you are using the account you intend to keep. A claim attaches to that account, not to a device shared by other players.
Step 3: Complete the claim
- On the live offer page, select the displayed game and begin the claim or checkout flow.
- Follow the prompts shown for your region and platform. A zero-price checkout may still ask you to confirm the transaction.
- Finish the process before the seven-day window closes.
- Open your Epic library and verify that the title appears there. You do not have to download it immediately.
Epic Games Support states: “Once claimed, the game is yours permanently – even if you don’t download it right away.” That statement applies to a game successfully claimed during its stated promotion, not to an offer that was merely viewed or left in a cart.
What if you missed the Epic deadline?
Epic says a game must be claimed during the indicated promotion period. A missed giveaway cannot simply be claimed afterward through the same offer. Watch the Free Games page for later promotions or special offers instead; do not assume customer support can retroactively restore an expired giveaway.
Why a title may not appear in your library
- The claim was started but not completed before the deadline.
- You signed in with a different Epic account.
- Two-factor authentication was not enabled when the claim was attempted.
- The offer was restricted to another platform or region.
- The library view has not refreshed. Sign out and back in, then check the account used for the transaction.
How to claim PlayStation Plus monthly games
PlayStation Plus monthly games are membership benefits, not permanent purchases. Sony describes them as available at no extra cost while the qualifying PlayStation Plus membership is active. New monthly games are added every calendar month, so the current Monthly Games area determines which titles and dates apply.

On PS5
- Open the PlayStation Plus area on the PS5 home screen.
- Choose Benefits, then Monthly Games.
- Select the current game you want and use the displayed add-to-library or download action.
- Check that the game is associated with the PlayStation account that holds the PlayStation Plus membership.
On PS4
- Open the PlayStation Plus section.
- Select Monthly Games.
- Choose the title and select Add to Library, then Download if you want it installed immediately.
Using a browser or the PlayStation App
Sony also supports using a web browser or the PlayStation App to add an eligible monthly game to your account and initiate a remote download. The exact button labels can change, so verify that the title is shown as a current monthly benefit before confirming.

What happens when the membership ends?
A monthly game can be played while the PlayStation Plus membership remains active. If the membership lapses, access to that monthly entitlement is suspended until an eligible membership is restored; reinstalling the game does not bypass that requirement.
Monthly Games versus the Game Catalog
These are separate benefits. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium include Game Catalog access, while the monthly-games benefit is the calendar-month selection. Sony warns that some Game Catalog titles have an end date and can leave the service. A catalog download is therefore not the same as adding a monthly game to your library, and neither should be described as unrestricted permanent ownership.
What can you claim for free on Xbox?
The official Xbox information covered here documents Game Pass in-game benefits, not a current permanent free-game giveaway. Those benefits can include monthly and seasonal drops for supported games. They are benefits for Game Pass subscribers and should not be presented as a free full game.
How the documented Game Pass benefit flow works
- Open the current benefits list in the Xbox console or Xbox app.
- Identify a supported game and read the benefit’s current eligibility and expiration terms.
- Launch that game with the eligible Game Pass account.
- Use the in-game prompt or benefit path shown by Xbox to claim the drop.
The exact benefit, schedule and interface can change. A cosmetic item, currency grant or seasonal drop is an in-game entitlement; it is not proof that the full game has been added to your library.

Checking Xbox Free Play Days or another full-game offer
If you are looking for temporary access to a complete Xbox game, open the current official Xbox offer listing for your region before describing it as free. Verify all of the following on that listing:
- The offer’s start and end dates.
- Whether a Game Pass plan or another membership is required.
- Whether the game is playable only during a trial or can be kept after claiming.
- The supported console, PC or cloud platform.
- The exact button sequence in the current Xbox console or app interface.
The documented Game Pass benefits page does not establish those Free Play Days details, so this guide does not invent a claim procedure or promise permanent ownership for an Xbox full-game promotion.

For a limited-time offer whose title is changing, the platform’s live store page is more reliable than a saved article, social-media post or search snippet. Confirm the offer immediately before acting.

The “free” button is missing
First confirm that the offer is still active and available in your country and on your device. A promotion can disappear when its deadline passes, when a platform-specific version is unavailable, or when the store shows a different edition. Return to the official current offer page rather than relying on an old link or screenshot.

The game is installed but will not start
Check the entitlement type. A PlayStation Plus monthly game requires an active qualifying membership, and a catalog title may have left the service. A free-to-play game has different conditions, while a trial can stop working after its stated period. The installation itself does not override those access rules.
You claimed a game but cannot find it
Sign into the same store account used for the claim, refresh the library and search the account’s transaction or library history. On Epic, verify that the claim completed and that two-factor authentication was enabled. On PlayStation, check that the game was added to the library rather than only queued for download.
A payment method is requested
Read the offer type and checkout summary. Steam’s documented free-to-play downloads do not require a subscription or credit card, but an add-on or paid edition can. Other stores may display account-verification or regional checkout screens even when the listed price is zero. Do not confirm a charge until the final total and edition are clear.
The game is not available in my region
Availability, ratings, platform support and promotion dates can vary by region. Use the store account’s actual country setting and the live offer page. Do not attempt to bypass regional restrictions by misrepresenting your location; doing so can create account or payment problems.
Safe claiming checklist
- Identify whether the offer is free-to-play, a zero-price giveaway, a membership benefit or a trial.
- Use the official store or support page currently displaying the offer.
- Check the exact end date, time zone, platform and region.
- Sign into the intended account before completing the claim.
- Enable two-factor authentication when the store requires it, as Epic does for its weekly giveaway.
- Read in-game-purchase, catalog-removal and membership-access notices.
- Confirm the title appears in your library or in-game benefits list.
- Keep proof of the completed transaction if the store supplies an order or confirmation screen.
Bottom line
Use Steam’s Free to Play category for games that do not require a subscription or credit card to download, while checking each title for optional spending. Use Epic’s Free Games page to claim the current weekly promotion before its seven-day window closes; a successful claim remains in the Epic account permanently. Use PlayStation Plus Monthly Games during the calendar month and remember that access depends on an active membership. On Xbox, distinguish documented Game Pass in-game drops from a full-game giveaway and verify any current Free Play Days terms before claiming.
