Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Privacy to review who can see your activity, profile details and status, who can add you to groups, and which calls or messages reach you. On phones, the wording and tap sequence can differ between Android and iPhone; on the web, WhatsApp documents that exact path. Select a control, choose the audience shown for your account, and remember that some restrictions have trade-offs or exceptions.
This guide explains what each control changes, what it cannot change, and which settings affect existing content versus future activity.
What WhatsApp privacy settings control
WhatsApp separates privacy into individual controls rather than one master switch. The available controls include:

Each setting has its own audience or behavior. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

How to open the privacy menu
WhatsApp on the web
- Open WhatsApp Web.
- Select Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Choose the setting you want to change and select one of the available audiences or switches.
WhatsApp documents this route in its official privacy-settings help article. The article has Android, iOS and Web tabs. Use the tab matching your device when you need exact mobile labels: the names and locations can change between app versions and platforms.
Choose who can see your information
For supported profile and activity controls, WhatsApp presents audience choices such as Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… and Nobody. The exact choices depend on the control.

Last seen and online are reciprocal
WhatsApp says that if you do not share your own last-seen or online information, you cannot see those details about other people. Setting online visibility to Everyone also means you are counted in the online count for groups you belong to. In practice, WhatsApp limits “Everyone” for last seen or online to people you have called or messaged before, or people saved in your contacts. These are product rules described in WhatsApp’s current help material, not guarantees that every account displays identical labels.
Profile photo, About and profile links
These are separate choices. Hiding your profile photo does not hide your About text, and restricting your About text does not change your last-seen or online setting. Open each control individually and select the narrowest audience that fits your use.
Control who can add you to groups
The group-adding setting governs invitations to groups. It does not erase groups you already joined or remove your number from a group’s member list. If an unwanted person continues contacting you, WhatsApp also provides block and report tools; blocking stops that person’s messages, calls and status updates from reaching you. See WhatsApp’s safety guidance for the current block and report behavior.
Read receipts have a built-in trade-off
Turning off read receipts prevents you from seeing other users’ read receipts as well. WhatsApp states that read receipts are still sent in group chats, so this switch is not a way to make group conversations completely unreadable.
Set a separate audience for Status
Status privacy is managed separately from profile and last-seen controls. WhatsApp’s dedicated status choices are:
- My contacts — share with your contacts.
- My contacts except… — share with contacts while excluding selected people.
- Only share with… — share with a selected list.
The general audience menu does not offer Everyone for Status. Use the dedicated Status privacy control described in WhatsApp’s status-management instructions.

Important Status exceptions
- Changing the audience does not change a Status that has already been posted. Apply the new audience before publishing the next update.
- A Status posted to a group is visible to group members regardless of your Status privacy selection.
- Mentioning a group can make the Status visible to all members of that group.
- People or groups mentioned in a Status can be able to reshare it to their own audience.
Review the audience each time you post if the update contains personal information, a live location or an image intended for a small group.
Use disappearing messages deliberately
The default disappearing-message timer applies to new messages in chats where the feature is used. WhatsApp lists three timer choices: 24 hours, 7 days and 90 days. The setting does not remove messages that were sent or received before you enabled it, and a message may be kept rather than disappearing.
Use the disappearing-message setting when you want a shorter default retention period, not as a guarantee that no copy will remain. WhatsApp explains the timer’s scope in its disappearing-messages help article.

Reduce unwanted calls and strengthen advanced protections
Silence unknown callers
The privacy controls include an option to silence calls from unknown numbers. Silenced calls do not ring your phone, but the feature is intended to reduce interruptions rather than make the caller disappear from all records. Check the Calls or Privacy area in your version of WhatsApp and enable the switch if you do not want unknown numbers ringing you.
Protect your IP address in calls
An advanced call option can protect your IP address by adding privacy protection to calls. The trade-off is that a call may use a relay rather than the most direct connection. The exact label can vary by app version.
Disable link previews
Disabling link previews prevents WhatsApp from generating a visual preview when a link is shared. The URL can still be sent and opened; only the preview behavior changes.
Block high volumes of unknown messages
WhatsApp also lists an advanced control for blocking high volumes of messages from unknown accounts. This is aimed at unusual bursts of unwanted messages, not at suppressing every message from a number that is not saved in your contacts.

Live location is a separate privacy area from your profile and Status audience. Review the live-location entry in Settings > Privacy and stop any active share that no longer needs to run. A profile-visibility change does not automatically revoke a live-location share that you already started.

How to compare the audience choices
Use the broadest setting only when you are comfortable with people outside your address book seeing the selected information. My contacts limits visibility to people saved in your contacts. My contacts except… is useful when most contacts are acceptable but a few should be excluded. Only share with… creates a small allow-list for Status. Nobody, when offered, removes visibility for that particular control, but it does not hide other profile fields or your phone number.

Audience controls answer “who can see this?” They do not answer “what can a recipient do with it?” A person who can view a photo, Status or message may still copy, screenshot, photograph or record it.
When a privacy change takes effect
Most audience switches govern future visibility after you confirm the new choice. Status is the clearest exception: a post already shared keeps the audience and special rules that applied when it was published. If a sensitive Status is already live, changing the menu alone is not enough; remove it and publish a replacement after selecting the intended audience.

The default disappearing-message timer has a different boundary. It sets the behavior for new messages, while messages sent or received before the timer was enabled are outside its scope. Even a new disappearing message can be kept, so participants should not treat the timer as a promise that no copy will survive.
Blocking is aimed at a particular account. It stops that person’s messages, calls and Status updates from reaching you, but it is separate from changing the audience for your profile fields or group invitations.
What WhatsApp privacy settings cannot hide
Your phone number
WhatsApp’s stated product limitation is unambiguous: There is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp.
In groups, members’ phone numbers also cannot currently be hidden through the privacy menu. Changing profile-photo, About, Status or last-seen visibility therefore does not make your number private from people who can see it in the service. This limitation is stated in WhatsApp’s privacy-settings help article.
Copies made by recipients
WhatsApp describes personal messages, calls, Status updates and shared locations as end-to-end encrypted. Encryption protects the transmission between participants; it does not control what a recipient does after receiving content. Someone can screenshot, copy, photograph or record information. WhatsApp’s Privacy at a Glance also distinguishes account and usage information that is not end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp’s current help material describes these defaults. Individual accounts or platforms may present them differently, so treat the table as a baseline to check rather than a promise about every installation.

Useful privacy changes, step by step
The names below follow WhatsApp’s documented Web path. On Android or iPhone, open the matching platform tab in WhatsApp’s help center if your app uses different labels.
Hide your last seen and online status
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Open Last seen and online, or the equivalent entry in your version.
- Choose Nobody for last seen if that option is available.
- Choose the most restrictive online-visibility option offered.
- Save or leave the menu after confirming the new selection.
Because visibility is reciprocal, you will also lose access to other people’s last-seen or online details under WhatsApp’s rules.
Hide your profile photo from most people
- Go to Settings > Privacy.
- Select Profile photo.
- Choose My contacts, My contacts except… or Nobody, depending on the choices shown.
- Confirm the selection.
Share a Status with selected people
- Open Settings > Privacy and select Status.
- Choose Only share with….
- Select the contacts who should see future Status updates.
- Publish the Status only after checking the selected audience.
If the update is already live, changing this setting will not retroactively change that post.

- Turn the switch off.
- Remember that you will no longer see other users’ read receipts, and group-chat receipts are still sent.
Set a disappearing-message default
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Select Default message timer or the equivalent wording.
- Choose 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days.
- Tell chat participants if the retention change matters to the conversation.
The timer affects new messages and does not guarantee that a participant cannot keep a copy.
Silence calls from unknown numbers
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Open the calls or unknown-callers option.
- Enable the control that silences unknown callers.
Use block and report for a specific abusive contact rather than relying only on the unknown-caller switch.

The label is missing or has moved
WhatsApp changes navigation across Android, iOS, Web and desktop releases. Start at Settings > Privacy, then use the Android, iOS or Web tab in the official help article that matches your platform. Do not assume a control available on one platform is displayed in the same place on another.
A person can still see an update
Check whether the item is a Status that was posted before you changed its audience, a Status posted to a group, or a Status involving a mentioned person or group. Those cases have separate visibility rules. Delete the existing Status and publish a new one after selecting the intended audience if necessary.

That is expected after restricting your own last-seen, online or read-receipt sharing. WhatsApp ties these features to reciprocal visibility. Group read receipts remain an exception.

A disappearing message remains available
Check when the message was sent, whether the timer was enabled for that chat, and whether somebody kept the message. The default timer does not apply retroactively to messages already exchanged.
An unwanted person still has your number
Privacy audiences do not hide phone numbers. Block the account to stop its messages, calls and Status updates, and report it when appropriate. People who share a group with you may still be able to see numbers according to WhatsApp’s current group behavior.
Practical privacy checklist
- Review Last seen and online together because restricting one can affect what you can see about others.
- Set Profile photo, About and profile-link visibility independently.
- Choose a dedicated Status audience before posting sensitive updates.
- Remember that Status audience changes do not rewrite an existing post.
- Decide whether the read-receipt trade-off is acceptable, especially for group chats.
- Use a 24-hour, 7-day or 90-day disappearing-message timer for new chats when a shorter default retention period is useful.
- Enable unknown-caller silencing if unexpected calls are disruptive.
- Review advanced call, link-preview and unknown-message protections.
- Stop live-location shares when their purpose ends.
- Do not treat any setting as a way to hide your WhatsApp phone number or prevent recipients from copying content.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find WhatsApp privacy settings?
On WhatsApp Web, open Settings, choose Privacy, then select the control you want to change. Android, iPhone and desktop labels can differ, so use the platform tab matching your app when the menu is not identical.
How do I hide my last seen and online status?
Open Settings > Privacy, select Last seen and online, and choose the most restrictive options available, such as Nobody for last seen. Restricting your own visibility also means you cannot see equivalent details about other people.
Can I hide my WhatsApp phone number?
No. WhatsApp states, “There is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp.” Privacy controls for your photo, About text, Status and activity do not remove the number from the service or from group visibility.
Who can see my WhatsApp Status?
Status uses its own audience menu: My contacts, My contacts except… or Only share with…. A group post is visible to group members, mentions can expand visibility, and changing the audience does not alter a Status already posted.
What happens when I turn off read receipts?
You stop seeing other users’ read receipts, and one-to-one read indicators are not shared in the usual way. WhatsApp says group-chat read receipts are still sent, so the switch does not hide reading activity in groups.
Do disappearing messages delete old chats?
No. The default timer applies to new messages and does not affect messages already sent or received. WhatsApp lists 24-hour, 7-day and 90-day choices, and a message may be kept rather than disappearing.
Will silencing unknown callers block them?
Silencing prevents calls from unknown numbers from ringing your phone, but it is not the same as blocking or reporting a specific account. Use block and report when a particular contact is unwanted or abusive.
Does WhatsApp privacy stop screenshots or copying?
No. End-to-end encryption protects communication between participants, but a recipient can still screenshot, copy, photograph or record content. Privacy settings limit intended visibility, not what a recipient does afterward.
The Bottom Line
Start at Settings > Privacy, adjust each control separately, and choose the narrowest audience that suits the situation. Check Status exceptions, reciprocal read-receipt and activity rules, timer limits, group behavior and the fact that WhatsApp cannot hide your phone number or prevent recipients from copying what they receive.
