On a personal Claude Free, Pro, or Max account, use Settings > Privacy on the web or desktop app to manage data export and shared-chat links. The same settings area is where Anthropic directs users to review model-improvement privacy controls, though its current help guidance does not specify the toggle’s exact label or position. Incognito chats are not saved to history or memory and are excluded from model improvement, but they are retained for 30 days by default. Deleting a regular chat or your whole account has different consequences and timelines, so choose the control that matches what you want to remove.
This guide covers personal Claude Free, Pro, and Max accounts. Anthropic’s official Help Center guidance available on 9 October 2026 describes the controls below; interface labels and policies can change. Team and Enterprise accounts are different: the customer organization controls submitted data and may access or export it, so individual users should check with their administrator.
What each privacy control changes
Claude’s privacy controls do different jobs. A setting that affects model improvement is not the same as a chat that is absent from history, and neither is the same as deleting stored data. Use this comparison to identify the right action before changing anything.

The 30-day periods above are product retention statements in Anthropic Help Center articles, not independent measurements. Enterprise retention may be longer when an organization sets a custom policy. The deletion and incognito timelines apply to the stated consumer guidance; they should not be assumed to describe every organization’s configuration.

In practice, start with the outcome you want. If you need to keep a record, export before making an irreversible change. If you want to prevent a particular shared snapshot from being opened through its link, manage that link. If you want a new chat omitted from history and memory, begin it in Incognito. If a saved conversation is already in history, use Delete rather than assuming that changing a setting will remove it. Account deletion is a separate, permanent step.
Open Privacy settings, export data, or manage shared chats
For a personal Free, Pro, or Max account, the documented web and Claude Desktop route begins in the account menu at the lower-left corner. The export option is not available in the iOS or Android apps.
Export a copy of your Claude data
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop.
- Click your initials in the lower-left corner, then choose Settings.
- Open Privacy and click Export data.
- Wait for the download link to arrive by email, then download the file before the link expires.
Anthropic says the export includes conversation data and account user information. The emailed download link expires 24 hours after delivery, so check the inbox associated with the account and save the export promptly. If you need a record before removing a conversation or account, export first; account deletion is permanent, and the export option is not offered in the mobile apps.
Export is useful when you want a copy of account information and conversations before making a change, but it is not itself a deletion request. Downloading the file does not remove the material from Claude, unshare a link, or alter a model-improvement setting. Treat the downloaded file as sensitive because it may contain the same personal or confidential information found in your conversations, and store it somewhere you trust.
If you primarily use Claude on a phone, use a web browser or Claude Desktop to initiate the export rather than looking for an export button in the iOS or Android app. The official guidance identifies those mobile apps as unable to initiate an export. The email link is time-limited, so avoid requesting an export when you cannot check the account’s email and save the file within the following 24 hours.
Review or disable shared-chat links
- In Claude on the web or desktop, open your initials menu, choose Settings, then open Privacy.
- Use the Manage control for shared chats to review the links you have created.
- Unshare a snapshot you no longer want available, or change its visibility to Private.
A public shared-chat link allows anyone who has the link to view the snapshot. Changing visibility to Private disables direct access through that link. Anthropic’s guidance says Team and Enterprise users can share only with members of the same organization. A shared snapshot is a separate exposure path to consider: changing general model-improvement settings does not itself revoke a link.
Think of shared-chat management as a check on material you previously chose to share, not a general switch for all conversations. Review the links in Manage if you are unsure what remains accessible. Unsharing or making a snapshot Private addresses access through that shared link; it does not delete the underlying conversation from your chat history. Delete the conversation separately if that is your goal.
Change whether regular chats can be used for model improvement
Anthropic says personal-account users can adjust model-improvement privacy settings at any time. Its consumer privacy guidance directs users to the model-improvement instructions in Claude’s Privacy settings. Because the current guidance available here does not establish the exact switch label, screen position, or platform-by-platform sequence, do not rely on a guessed menu path or toggle name. Open the current Settings > Privacy page and follow the model-improvement instructions shown there.

This setting concerns the use of regular chats for model improvement. It is not a way to delete existing conversations, remove shared links, or make chat data disappear from account history. If your aim is to keep one conversation out of history and memory, use an incognito chat instead; if your aim is to remove a saved chat, delete that conversation.
Anthropic says the setting can be adjusted at any time, so users do not have to treat the choice as permanent. Check the current Privacy page for the active control and its wording rather than relying on screenshots or instructions that may describe an older interface. This guide does not name a particular toggle or claim that each platform uses the same sequence, because the current consumer guidance does not specify those details.
What the setting does not override
Anthropic says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even if Model Improvement is enabled. It also says conversations flagged by safety classifiers may still be used for internal trust-and-safety purposes, including improving internal safety models, detecting harmful content, enforcing policies, or advancing safety research. The consumer guidance therefore does not describe either the setting or incognito mode as an unconditional bar on all internal use.
Anthropic recommends caution with highly sensitive information such as financial data, health records, passwords, and confidential documents. Privacy settings should not be treated as a reason to submit information you do not need Claude to process.
If you are deciding whether to enter sensitive material, separate two questions: whether a conversation is used for model improvement under the applicable setting, and whether submitting the information is appropriate at all. The consumer guidance cautions users about financial information, health records, passwords, and confidential documents. Avoid including details that are not needed for the task, and do not interpret an improvement setting as a promise that no safety-related internal use can ever occur.
Start an incognito chat when you do not want history or memory
Incognito is the option for a temporary conversation that should not be saved to Claude’s chat history or memory. It is not a zero-retention mode and it is not equivalent to deleting a conversation after the fact.
- Start a new chat outside a project.
- Select the ghost icon in the upper-right corner.
- Check that the interface identifies the conversation as an Incognito chat before entering your prompt.
Anthropic’s help article says incognito is not available inside projects. On the newer Claude experience, the article says incognito opens in the previous chat experience, where Claude cannot create files or run code. Interface behavior may change, so confirm the incognito label before sharing sensitive material or relying on a feature.

Before sending a prompt, verify the Incognito chat label. That check matters because a regular chat and an incognito chat have different history and model-improvement treatment. A chat started inside a project is not an option for this flow; begin a new chat outside the project instead. If you need Claude to create files or run code, keep in mind that the cited help article says incognito on the newer experience opens in the previous chat experience, where those capabilities are unavailable.
Incognito is therefore best understood as a temporary, unsaved chat experience, not an erase button. It does not appear in chat history or Claude memory, and it is excluded from model improvement even if the setting is enabled, subject to the stated safety-classifier exception. Its default 30-day retention means that “not saved to history” does not mean “not retained.” Once closed, the chat cannot be reopened or converted into a regular saved one.
Delete one regular conversation
On the web, deletion starts from the conversation list. It removes the conversation from visible history immediately, while Anthropic says backend deletion occurs within 30 days.

- Open its three-dot menu and choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
The Help Center also describes multi-select deletion and separate steps for mobile apps, but the exact mobile sequence is not established here. Do not assume deleting a chat also deletes projects, account details, or every other item associated with your account: Anthropic says those remain unless you delete them separately or delete the account.
The immediate change is to what you can see in the conversation list: the deleted chat disappears from visible history. The stated backend timeline is different, with deletion from backend systems within 30 days. Do not describe that interval as an instant purge. If you need a copy before deleting, use the web or desktop export route first and save the emailed file within its 24-hour window.
Deleting a single conversation is narrower than deleting the account. It does not, by itself, remove projects or account information. It also is not the same as changing whether regular chats may be used for model improvement. Choose Delete when you mean to remove that saved conversation from history and have it removed from backend systems on the stated timeline; use the account-level action only when you mean to remove the account and its associated access.
Delete your Claude account permanently
Account deletion is the broadest personal-account action in these controls. Anthropic says it removes access to conversations, projects, and account information, and the account cannot be recovered. Export anything you need before starting.
- In Claude on the web, open the account menu and choose Settings, or go to Settings > Account.
- Select Delete account and follow the confirmation prompts.
- If you have a Pro or Max subscription, first open Billing settings, cancel, and wait until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account.
Mobile deletion paths differ by platform and are described in Anthropic’s official account-deletion guidance. The web path above should not be assumed to match every iOS or Android screen. Because deletion is permanent, distinguish it from deleting a single conversation and make an export before proceeding if you want to retain your data.

For a Pro or Max subscriber, the order matters: cancel from Billing settings, then wait until the current subscription period ends, and only then delete the account. Do not treat cancelling a paid plan as account deletion; the account remains a distinct thing to remove. Likewise, deleting an account is not a reversible way to tidy up one chat. It is permanent, and Anthropic says users cannot recover the account afterward.
Before continuing, check that the account is the one you intend to delete, save any export you need, and consider whether you also need to manage shared-chat links. Account deletion removes access to conversations, projects, and account information, but the documented steps still distinguish deletion from managing shared links. If you use an organization account, consult the administrator instead of assuming the personal-account deletion route applies.
How privacy works on Team and Enterprise accounts
Team and Enterprise data is governed by the customer organization rather than solely by an individual user’s consumer settings. Anthropic describes the organization as the controller of submitted user data and itself as a processor: it says it processes that data on the customer’s instructions to provide Claude. The organization may access or export user data, so an individual should ask the administrator how access, retention, and deletion policies apply.

Anthropic says commercial product data is not used to train its models unless the customer chooses to participate in the Development Partner Program. Separate official guidance published in September 2026 discusses designated commercial Covered Models: it states that prompt and completion retention is at least 30 days by default, subject to safety-investigation and legal exceptions, and that zero data retention (ZDR) is unavailable in specified covered-model contexts. Another article says this covered-model change does not affect consumer Free, Pro, and Max use of Claude on web, desktop, mobile, or Claude Code, which already retains inputs and outputs under consumer practices. Those statements are limited to the models and contexts they describe; they do not establish one retention rule for every Claude conversation.
For a person using a work account, practical questions about who can see data, how long it is retained, or whether a deletion request is available are questions for the organization’s administrator. The customer organization is the controller and may access or export submitted user data. Anthropic’s processor role means it processes that data on the customer’s instructions to provide Claude; it is not a promise that individual users alone decide what happens to work-account data.
Keep the covered-model policy in its stated scope. The September 2026 guidance concerns designated commercial Covered Models and describes at least 30 days of prompt and completion retention by default, with safety-investigation and legal exceptions, plus contexts where ZDR is unavailable. It should not be generalized to every model or every account. Anthropic separately says this change does not affect consumer Free, Pro, and Max use on web, desktop, mobile, or Claude Code. If your plan or model is supplied through an organization, ask the administrator which policies and settings apply to your use.

- Keep a copy before making a change: export from Settings > Privacy on web or desktop, then download the emailed file within 24 hours of delivery.
- Stop a shared snapshot from being directly accessible: review shared chats under Settings > Privacy and unshare the link or set it to Private.
- Keep a new conversation out of history and Claude memory: start it as an Incognito chat and verify the label before sending a prompt.
- Remove a saved conversation from your history: use its Delete action; this does not remove separate projects or account details.
- Remove your personal account: export first, then use Delete account; Pro and Max subscribers must cancel and wait for their current subscription period to end.
- Understand organizational access or retention: ask the Team or Enterprise administrator, because the customer organization controls submitted data and may access or export it.
These controls answer different questions, so do not expect one action to do everything. A Privacy setting affects model-improvement treatment of regular chats. Incognito avoids history and memory for a new chat and is excluded from model improvement, but it still has a default retention period. Deleting a chat removes it from visible history at once, with backend deletion stated to occur within 30 days. Deleting an account is permanent. Shared-chat links need their own review, and organization accounts require attention to administrator policy.

Can I export my Claude data from the iOS or Android app?
No. Anthropic’s export guide says to use Claude on the web or Claude Desktop: open your initials menu, choose Settings > Privacy, then click Export data. The download link arrives by email and expires 24 hours after delivery.
Does Incognito mean Claude retains nothing?

The controls are separate. Review shared chats in Settings > Privacy and use Manage to unshare a snapshot or set its visibility to Private. Changing model-improvement settings does not revoke a shared link.
Can I delete my Claude account while I have a Pro or Max subscription?
Anthropic’s guidance tells Pro and Max subscribers to cancel through Billing settings and wait until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account. Export anything you need first because account deletion is permanent and unrecoverable.
Who can access Team or Enterprise conversations?
Anthropic says the customer organization controls submitted user data and may access or export it. Ask the administrator how your organization’s access, retention, and deletion policies apply.
The Bottom Line
Use the control that matches your goal: export first if you need a copy, manage shared links separately, use Incognito for a new chat you do not want in history or memory, delete a saved chat to remove it from history, and reserve account deletion for a permanent exit. Incognito is not zero-retention, and Team or Enterprise users should confirm their organization’s policies with an administrator.
